Pak wants to play imp role in bridging US-China gap than taking sides: Bilawal

The Foreign Minister also dismissed recent reports that China did not come to Pakistan’s rescue in recent difficult economic times..reports Hamza Ameer

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that Islamabad wants to play an important role in bridging the gap between the US and China in times of geopolitical division, rather than taking sides.

While speaking to Foreign Policy in an interview, Bhutto highlighted that Pakistan maintains an important and unique position on relations with US and China as the country enjoys good friendly relations with the two superpowers, adding that this unique position of Islamabad can help in pave the way towards uniting Washington and Beijing.

“Pakistan’s unique position of positive relations with US and China could help encourage cooperation between the two countries,” he said.

The Foreign Minister also dismissed recent reports that China did not come to Pakistan’s rescue in recent difficult economic times

“This is absolutely incorrect. Islamabad’s relationship with Beijing was not new and had long bipartisan roots,” he said,

“And I like to say that we wanted to be friend with China when nobody wanted to be friends with China. Now, everybody wants to be friends with China.”

During the interview, Bilawal countered questions that US did not want to be friends with China, stating that the scope of relationships should not be based on geopolitical conflicts.

“Not everything is about the geopolitical conflict of the US and China. It was preposterous and absolutely ridiculous that a conversation about US and China relations was occurring while talking about Pakistan’s survival and ability to deal with the cataclysmic flooding,” he added.

Talking about the catastrophic effects of climate change that Pakistan is currently suffering to in relation to the debated conflict between US and China, Bilawal insisted that the challenges of climate change could not be confronted and tackled if the two superpowers refused to work together.

When argued about China’s lack of aid to Sri Lanka during their economic crisis, Bilawal stated that it was Beijing’s decision on how it wants to extend its support to any other country.

“In the sense that was solely an economic crisis of its own dynamics. But as far as what China does, whether it’s with Sri Lanka or Pakistan, that’s totally China’s decision,” he said.

“Just like it’s 100 per cent America’s decision in either of these circumstances.”

Bilawal reiterated that it was in Pakistan’s best interest to not take sides between US and China at times when the one-third of the country is under water as a result of the catastrophic floods.

He said Pakistan does not want to become part of what he termed as a “geopolitical conflict-based football match”.

“Right now, particularly when we’re drowning in floods, I don’t want to play any part in exacerbating any tensions or being a geopolitical football,” he said adding that “it was a mutual consensus within Pakistan that the country would not allow itself to be dragged into the RussiaUkraine crisis also”.

Bilawal reasoned Pakistan’s position on the RussiaUkraine war with reference to Afghanistan conflict, from which, he said Islamabad was just coming out.

“We are just coming out of a decades long conflict in Afghanistan and frankly, we’re exhausted by what war does and the consequences for any one country.”

US unemployment claims drop after rebounding

The latest report showed that the four-week moving average for initial jobless claims, a method to iron out data volatility, decreased by 8,750 to 207,000…reports Asian Lite News

Initial jobless claims in the US fell to 193,000 after rebounding in the previous week, the Labour Department reported.

In the week ending September 24, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits decreased by 16,000 from the previous week’s downwardly revised level of 209,000, according to a report released on Thursday by the Department’s Bureau of Labour Statistics.

In the previous week, the claims rose for the first week after dropping for five straight weeks, reports Xinhua news agency.

The latest report showed that the four-week moving average for initial jobless claims, a method to iron out data volatility, decreased by 8,750 to 207,000.

The number of people continuing to collect regular state unemployment benefits, which was reported with a one-week lag, decreased by 29,000 to 1.35 million during the week ending September 17, said the report.

The number of job openings in the US rose to 11.2 million by the end of July, as the imbalances between labour market supply and demand remained, the Department had reported earlier.

With the increase in job openings, there were nearly two job positions per available worker.

As the Federal Reserve ramps up its fight against surging inflation, the strong job market may be about to take a turn for the worse.

The central bank’s latest quarterly economic projections showed that Fed officials’ median projection of unemployment is 4.4 per cent by end of 2023, an upward revision of 0.5 percentage point from June.

Ex-US Army major, wife charged over plot to leak data to Russia

The accused were charged in an unsealed indictment in a federal court in Maryland with conspiracy and the wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information…reports Asian Lite News

A former US Army major and his anesthesiologist wife were federally indicted Thursday for allegedly plotting to leak highly sensitive health care data about military patients to Russia, media reported.

The accused were identified as Jamie Lee Henry, the former major who was also a doctor at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and his wife, Dr. Anna Gabrielian, according to US Department of Justice (DOJ).

The accused were charged in an unsealed indictment in a federal court in Maryland with conspiracy and the wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information, news agency Reuters reported.

It alleges that the plot started after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.

The pair wanted to try to help the Russian government by providing them with data to help the Putin regime “gain insights into the medical conditions of individuals associated with the US government and military,” prosecutors said.

The two met with someone whom they believed was a Russian official, but in fact was actually an FBI undercover agent, the indictment says, it was reported.

On Aug. 31, according to the indictment, the FBI agent met Gabrielian and Henry at a hotel in Gaithersburg, Maryland, near Washington, D.C.

Gabrielian gave the agent medical information about the spouse of a person employed by the Office of Naval Intelligence — and highlighted a medical issue that Russia could exploit, the indictment says.

According to NBC report, Henry allegedly provided information on at least five individuals who were patients at Fort Bragg, including a retired Army officer, a current Department of Defense employee, the spouse of a U.S. Army veteran, and two spouses of deceased US Army veterans.

The defendants face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison on the conspiracy charge and a maximum of 10 years in federal prison for each count of disclosing health information, it was reported.

North Korea launched two apparent short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday evening, just hours after Harris met South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol in Seoul…reports Asian Lite News

US Vice President Kamala Harris has visited the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone dividing the two Koreas, highlighting what she called her country’s “ironclad” commitment to protecting ally South Korea.

During her visit, Harris condemned the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s provocative nuclear rhetoric and ballistic missile launches, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, and they discussed our response to potential future provocations, including through trilateral cooperation with Japan, according to the statement released by White House.

North Korea launched two apparent short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday evening, just hours after Harris met South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol in Seoul.

Notably, the latest launch came a day after nuclear-armed North Korea fired two short-range weapons on Wednesday and one missile on Sunday, making it the fifth test in five days, The Japan Times reported.

President Yoon and Kamala on Thursday shared their concern about North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

Yoon and Harris met for 85 minutes at the presidential office and discussed a wide range of issues, including ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship, and key regional and international issues, Yonhap News Agency quoted deputy presidential spokesperson Lee Jae-myoung as saying.

“President Yoon and Vice President Harris expressed serious concern about North Korea’s recent ballistic missile launches and legalization of its nuclear force policy,” he said at a press briefing, noting Harris reaffirmed the ironclad US commitment to the defence of South Korea.

The two sides also agreed to plan a visit by Yoon to the US next year to mark the 70th anniversary of the alliance.

On the controversy surrounding Yoon and US President Joe Biden’s meetings in New York last week, Harris said that Washington is not bothered by it at all, according to Lee.

The spokesperson did not elaborate on which controversy Harris was referring to, but it apparently included the uproar in South Korea over Yoon’s remarks caught on hot mic, which were initially reported as including vulgar language in reference to US Congress and Biden.

The his the Vice President’s Harris first visit to South Korea since taking office in January 2021.

The last time a US Vice President visited South Korea was in February 2018, when Mike Pence led a delegation to the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

Harris landed in Seoul just hours after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea in apparent protest of an ongoing South Korea-US military exercise involving an American aircraft carrier.

The North had also conducted a similar short-range ballistic missile test on Sunday.

US Senate gives nod for stopgap funding bill

A continuing resolution temporarily funds the government in the absence of full appropriations bills, often by continuing funding levels from the prior year…reports Asian Lite News

The Senate approved a stopgap funding bill to fund the government through mid-December, ahead of a government shutdown deadline.

The upper chamber on Thursday voted 72-25 to clear the bill, which now goes to the House for its consideration. The so-called continuing resolution would prevent a partial government shutdown after the current fiscal year expires Friday night, Xinhua news agency reported.

Congress frequently passes continuing resolutions when lawmakers are unable to agree on appropriations for a new fiscal year before a deadline, and occasionally multiple continuing resolutions are necessary to fund the government for an entire fiscal year, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a budget watchdog group.

A continuing resolution temporarily funds the government in the absence of full appropriations bills, often by continuing funding levels from the prior year. But the newly approved stopgap measure included several provisions beyond funding the federal government’s current operations, including $12 billion in aid to Ukraine.

The legislation also provides billions of dollars in disaster aid to support communities that are recovering from extreme weather. Some $20 million will be used to fix the water infrastructure in Jackson, Mississipi, where heavy rainstorms led pumps at the main water treatment plant to fail last month, leaving 150,000 people without safe drinking water.

The stopgap bill had previously been held up by disagreements over a proposal from centrist Democrat Joe Manchin, a senator from West Virginia, regarding federal permitting process for major energy projects. In the face of bipartisan opposition, Manchin had to drop the measure.

US Senate approves $12 bn new aid for Ukraine

The measure, agreed by senators of both parties, includes $3 billion for arms, supplies and salaries for Ukraine’s military, and authorizes President Joe Biden to direct the Defense Department to take $3.7 billion worth of its own weapons and materiel to provide Ukraine…reports Asian Lite news

The Senate approved $12 billion in new economic and military aid for Ukraine Thursday as part of a stopgap extension of the federal budget into December.

The measure, agreed by senators of both parties, includes $3 billion for arms, supplies and salaries for Ukraine’s military, and authorizes President Joe Biden to direct the Defense Department to take $3.7 billion worth of its own weapons and materiel to provide Ukraine.

It also provides $4.5 billion for Kyiv to keep the country’s finances stable and keep the government running, providing services to the Ukrainian people.

It comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to declare the annexation of parts of Ukraine occupied by Russian troops on Friday.

“Seven months since the conflict began, it’s crystal clear that American assistance has gone a long way to helping the Ukrainian people resist Putin’s evil, vicious aggression,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“But the fight is far from over, and we must, we must, continue helping the brave, valiant Ukrainian people.”

The Ukraine aid is part of a short-term extension of the federal budget, which is to expire at the end of the fiscal year on September 30 without the parties in Congress having agreed to a full-year allocation for fiscal 2022-23.

The extension, or continuing resolution, will keep the government running into December, but it has to first be approved by the House of Representatives to avoid shutting down parts of the government on Monday.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he wanted “to send a very clear signal” that more economic and military assistance would be sent to Ukraine when Congress returns to Washington after the Nov. 8 mid-term elections.

“This is a defining moment for the world when it comes to territorial integrity,” Graham told a news conference where he and Democrat Richard Blumenthal introduced a bill to cut off US assistance to any country that recognizes Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territory.

“We’re dealing with Hurricane Putin,” Graham said, after expressing best wishes for US citizens affected by powerful Hurricane Ian.

Graham and Blumenthal also called on Biden to designate Russia a state sponsor of terrorism, which the administration says is not the most effective way to hold Russia accountable.

Blumenthal and Graham’s bill was one of several seeking to boost Ukraine that was recently introduced in Congress.

Some proposals could become law as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a massive bill setting policy for the Pentagon expected to pass by year-end.

On Thursday, Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen and Republican Pat Toomey filed an amendment to the NDAA proposing the Biden administration use secondary sanctions to strengthen a price cap G7 countries plan to impose on Russian oil.

‘We will never recognise Russia’s claims on Ukrainian territory’

President Joe Biden pledged on Thursday the United States will never recognize Russia’s claims on Ukraine’s sovereign territory as the United States prepared new sanctions to impose once Moscow annexes new areas of Ukraine.

Speaking to Pacific island leaders, Biden denounced referendums that pro-Russian forces conducted in areas of Ukraine as an “absolute sham,” saying the results were “manufactured in Moscow.”

The United States is working with allies on sanctions to impose once Russia annexes new areas of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin will begin annexing four Ukrainian regions to Russia on Friday, and the US response is expected to follow quickly.

“The United States, I want to be very clear about this, United States will never, never, never recognize Russia’s claims on Ukraine sovereign territory,” Biden said.

The sanctions are expected to target “individuals and entities inside and outside Russia that provide support to this action,” the White House said on Wednesday.

“Russia’s assault on Ukraine in pursuit of imperial ambitions is a flagrant, flagrant violation of the UN Charter, and the basic principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Biden.

Congress Chief poll: Tharoor, Kharge, Thripathi file nominations

Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge said he is also throwing his hat into the ring. “I am going to file my nomination (for Congress president post)”, Kharge told media persons as he left for the AICC headquarters today…reports Asian Lite News

Senior Congress leader and MP, Shashi Tharoor on Friday filed his nomination for the post of party President at the office of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in the national capital. Ahead of filing his nomination, Tharoor today visited Raj Ghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge said he is also throwing his hat into the ring. “I am going to file my nomination (for Congress president post)”, Kharge told media persons as he left for the AICC headquarters today.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Congress leader KN Tripathi also filed his nomination for the party’s topmost position and said that “the decision of party leaders is respected” “I belong to a farmer’s family. The country is seeing that son of a farmer who has experience of serving with the Indian Air Force, minister in state government and elected as deputy leader of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, can also contest for the post of AICC President,” Tripathi had said before filing his nominations today.

Earlier, both Digvijaya Singh and Ashok Gehlot stated that they have dropped out of the race. The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister visited Kharge at his residence this morning. “I told him that I stand by him and can’t even think of contesting against him, I will be his proposer,” Singh told reporters.

Congress MP Deepender S Hooda also said: “I welcome Mallikarjun Kharge’s nomination for Congress president post and am confident that he will get elected. Over the years, he has raised the voice of the people in Parliament. I’ve signed his nomination papers as a proposer.”

Meanwhile, Gehlot had on Thursday said he is pulling out of the contest after he met with Sonia Gandhi and apologised to her for the ruckus in Rajasthan triggered by his loyalists over a possible leadership change in the state after Gehlot was set to file his nomination papers for the Congress chief polls.

Nominations for the post of Congress president close at 3 pm today and results will be declared on October 19. With the Gandhis not running for the top post this time around, the grand old party is all set to get a non-Gandhi president after over 25 years. (ANI)

Chinese Fentanyl fueling US’ drug problem

A Toronto-based think tank highlighted China’s role in the trade of synthetic drugs, which has led to concerns about possible involvement in the US opioid problem…reports Asian Lite News

Fentanyl, a nameless killer touted as the deadliest drug threat facing the United States, is waging an all-out assault on the most powerful country in the world.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin. Just two milligrams of fentanyl, or the amount that could fit on the tip of a pencil, is considered a potentially lethal dose, according to the US government.

“In 2021, a record number of Americans – 107,622 – died from a drug poisoning or overdose. Sixty-six per cent of those deaths can be attributed to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl,” the US Justice Department said this week.

On Tuesday, the US government announced the results of an enforcement operation that spanned from May to September and resulted in significant fentanyl seizures across the United States.

As part of the One Pill Can Kill initiative, the DEA and its law enforcement partners seized more than 10.2 million fentanyl pills and approximately 980 pounds of fentanyl powder during the period of May 23 through Sept. 8, 2022.

The US Justice Department said the amount of fentanyl taken off the streets during this surge is equivalent to more than 36 million lethal doses removed from the illegal drug supply.

In an editorial, a Toronto-based think tank highlighted China’s role in the trade of synthetic drugs, which has led to concerns about possible involvement in the US opioid problem. “The production of illegal fentanyl, the majority of which was destined for the American drug market, was outlawed in China three years ago as a result of a vigorous diplomatic campaign by the United States. Since then, most of the illicit fentanyl production has moved from China to Mexico, where it is produced on an industrial scale utilising chemicals imported from China as precursors,” the International Forum For Rights And Security (IFFRAS) said.

The IFFRAS said the sale of precursor chemicals and the illicit funds obtained from it has supported China’s economy at a time when it has struggled to recover from the global financial crisis. However, it is unlikely that the opioid crisis is a part of some large-scale Chinese hybrid campaign against the United States.

The think tank argues that the opioid problem has also turned into a political negotiating chip for the Chinese government as tempers are once again rising over the Taiwan Strait.

“In protest of US congressional travels to Taiwan last month, China froze all counterdrug cooperation with the US, saying the consequences of undermining bilateral ties and hurting China-US counternarcotics cooperation should be entirely borne by the U.S. side,” the Canadian think tank said.

It states that China does not have many reasons to contribute to stopping the flow of pharmaceuticals to the US. At the same time, Washington needs to convince Beijing to crack down on Chinese chemical businesses.

According to IFFRAS, both US and China must find a way to cooperate on areas of shared concern, such as drug trafficking, as they are both major players in the global community.

In a bid to establish itself as an accountable member of the world community, China must stop the flow of dangerous narcotics into the United States. Meawhile, Washington needs to employ all of its military might to protect the citizens from the opioid crisis regardless of China’s cooperation. (ANI)
