    Hope Probe discovers new kind of ‘patchy’ Mars proton aurora

    This new patchy type of proton aurora is formed when the solar wind directly impacts Mars’ dayside upper atmosphere and emits ultraviolet light as it slows down…reports Asian Lite News

    The Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), the first interplanetary exploration undertaken by an Arab nation, has made first observations of a new type of proton aurora around Mars.

    The spatially variable ‘patchy’ proton aurora potentially triggers new insights into unexpected behaviours in the Martian atmosphere. The EMM team has worked together with NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) mission to fully characterise these observations. The combination of EMM’s unprecedented global aurora images with MAVEN’s simultaneous local plasma observations opens up new avenues for understanding the drivers of Mars’ enigmatic aurora.

    “Our discovery of this patchy proton aurora adds a new kind of event to the long list of those currently studied by EMM and challenges our existing views of how the proton aurora on Mars’ dayside are formed,” said Hessa Al Matroushi, EMM’s Science Lead. “The EMM Hope probe has so far uncovered many unexpected phenomena that extend our understanding of Mars’ atmospheric and magnetospheric dynamics. These new observations, combined with MAVEN data, have lifted the lid on entirely new possibilities for scientific research.”

    This new patchy type of proton aurora is formed when the solar wind directly impacts Mars’ dayside upper atmosphere and emits ultraviolet light as it slows down. It was discovered in snapshots of the dayside disk obtained by the Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMUS), which observes the planet’s upper atmosphere and exosphere, scanning for variability in atmospheric composition and atmospheric escape to space. The aurora manifests as bright regions scattered across the dayside of the planet in two ultraviolet wavelengths associated with the Hydrogen atom, Lyman beta at 102.6 nm and Lyman alpha at 121.6 nm. Under normal conditions, the dayside disk of the planet at these wavelengths is uniform, and the planetary brightness results from Hydrogen atoms scattering sunlight. When the aurora occurs, small regions of the planet become much brighter at these wavelengths, signifying intense localised energy deposition in the atmosphere.

    “We’ve seen emissions at these wavelengths before, thanks to proton aurora studies by NASA’s MAVEN mission, but these EMM EMUS images represent the first time we’ve had a global view of spatial variability in proton aurora at Mars, and the first time we’ve been able to unambiguously observe this patchy structure,” said EMM science team member and lead author of a newly submitted paper on the proton aurora, Mike Chaffin. “We know that these wavelengths are only emitted by the Hydrogen atom, which tells us that super energetic Hydrogen atoms must be present in the atmosphere in order to produce the auroral emission.”

    A data sharing agreement between EMM and MAVEN has enabled analysis of the new EMM images using plasma observations made by MAVEN, which has been characterising the Mars ionosphere and magnetosphere since 2014. MAVEN carries a full suite of plasma instruments, including a magnetometer and two ion electrostatic analysers that measured the Martian plasma and fields environment during EMM’s observations of patchy proton aurora events.

    “Multi-vantage point measurements of the Martian atmosphere tell us about the real-time response of the atmosphere to the Sun. These types of simultaneous observations probe the fundamental physics of atmospheric dynamics and evolution,” said MAVEN Principal Investigator Shannon Curry.

    “Access to MAVEN data has been essential for placing these new observations into a wider context. Together, we’re pushing the boundaries of our existing knowledge not only of Mars, but of planetary interactions with the solar wind,” said Al Matroushi.

    Martian proton auroras were originally discovered by MAVEN and subsequently found in data from ESA’s Mars Express mission, but most of these previous observations show uniform auroral emission across the dayside of the planet. By contrast, the EMUS observations are able to unambiguously reveal small-scale spatial structure. Scientists from both teams now believe the patchy aurora can only be produced by plasma turbulence in the space surrounding Mars. “Because of the size scales involved in the solar wind and extended hydrogen atmosphere of Mars, there’s no way the standard proton aurora formation mechanism could produce the aurora we’re observing with EMUS,” said Chaffin.

    “In the August 11 observations the aurora is so widespread and so disorganised that the plasma environment around Mars must have been truly disturbed. Thanks to MAVEN measurements of the Mars plasma environment simultaneous with the aurora, we can confidently say that the solar wind is directly impacting the upper atmosphere wherever we’re seeing auroral emission,” he added. “What we’re seeing is essentially a map of where the solar wind is raining down onto the planet.”

    The simultaneous observations of patchy proton aurora by Hope and measurements of plasma conditions by MAVEN are therefore a window into rare circumstances, when the interaction between Mars and the solar wind is unusually chaotic.

    Hope has observed patchy aurora multiple times over the course of its mission so far, and the shape of the aurora is not always the same. On 30th August 2021, for example, the patchy proton aurora was confined to a much smaller portion of the disk than on 11th August, suggesting a different mechanism may be at work. Plasma turbulence at Mars can occur under a variety of conditions, and different shapes of patchy proton aurora may reveal different plasma conditions.

    As of June 2022, Mars is about a month away from the peak of its Southern Summer, when proton aurorae are known to be at their most active. “Whether we’ll see anything as spectacular as what we’ve already got is anyone’s guess, but I’m hopeful. Hope continues to far exceed our expectations for scientific discovery, and I can’t wait to see what we learn next,” said Chaffin.

    Imtiaz Feroz Gondal, Chargé d’Affairs of the Embassy of Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, has commended the UAE and its leadership for the noble humanitarian support for those affected by torrential rains and floods in Pakistan. The severe flooding has caused loss of lives and significant damage to infrastructure.

    He said that the UAE was among the first countries to immediately respond and carry out its humanitarian mission as soon as the disaster occurred, with its teams being the fastest in reaching the affected areas, despite the field and logistic challenges.

    The Pakistani diplomat said this during his meeting today with Hamoud Abdullah Al Junaibi, Secretary-General of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), at the ERC headquarters, in the presence of a number of officials.

    He also expressed his country’s appreciation of the efforts of the ERC, led by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC, to relieve the suffering of the displaced and improve their living conditions.

    Gondal affirmed that the ERC has proven that it is up to challenge and fit to bear its humanitarian responsibility, noting that it is currently taking an honorable stance towards the victims and has been exemplary in dealing with the disaster.

    He gave a detailed briefing on the current humanitarian situation in Pakistan and his country’s efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people.

    For his part, Al Junaibi shed light on the details of the ERC’s operations and its future relief plans, which will include several areas across health, living, and housing conditions, stressing the ERC’s keenness on enhancing its humanitarian efforts to help those affected. He affirmed that the ERC’s efforts are simply part of its duty towards the brotherly Pakistani people and a translation of the directives of the UAE’s leadership.

    Meanwhile, the Joint Operations Command of the UAE Ministry of Defence is continuing its humanitarian operations in Pakistan, through the launch of a second airlift of humanitarian aid from the UAE.

    The second batch of aid included further relief supplies, shelter material, humanitarian aid, food and medications for people affected by the floods that hit the country.

    The humanitarian aid was dispatched as per the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to support flood-hit Pakistan.

    The armed forces have dedicated military aircraft to transport humanitarian aid on account of the competitive edge they have gained in transporting relief material regionally and internationally.

    The provision of the UAE aid falls under the Article No.9 of the ‘UAE’s Principles of the 50’, which considers foreign humanitarian aid an integral part of the country’s ethical commitment toward friendly countries.

    At a time when Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot has brushed aside questions being raised about his anointment as Congress president, former deputy CM Sachin Pilot on Wednesday indirectly commented on the present situation in the party. He said, “Whatever the high command will say, that instruction will have to be obeyed by all leaders. In politics, anything which is not visible, does happen and the thing being seen does not happen.”

    Pilot also raised questions about the rising crime rate in Rajasthan and the defeat of the Congress’ student wing NSUI in the student union elections. He was interacting with the media at his residence in Jaipur on Wednesday morning.

    Speaking on the election of the party president, he said, “Elections have been declared. Notification will be issued for the election of National President of Congress on 22nd. Whatever it is, it will come to the fore. We all speak for ourselves or for others. All of us have followed the instructions of the party with full dedication and sincerity. All the leaders of Rajasthan have spoken about this many times.”

    Answering a question on the increasing crime rate in Rajasthan as per NCRB statistics, Pilot said, “I have also seen that report. The rise in crime is very worrying. The increasing incidents of crime against Dalit and tribal women is worrying. SC commission should be given constitutional status. The SC commission has got constitutional status in many states.”

    “No one should have the courage to commit atrocities on Dalit adivasis. Even when I went to Jalore, I had said that mere enactment of a law would not intimidate the oppressors. We have to create such an environment by taking action,” he added.

    Row over electoral rolls as Congress gears up for presidential poll

    Underlining the need of a well-defined electoral college, Karti Chidambaram said any ad hoc electoral college is meaningless…reports Asian Lite News

    The process for the Congress President’s election has come in spotlight after few leaders questioned the non-availability of electoral rolls in the public domain.

    Two Congress leaders, Manish Tewari and Karti Chidambaram, on Wednesday urged the Central Election Authority, headed by Madhusudan Mistry, to make the electoral rolls public and available on the Congress website.

    However, the CEA said that these rolls will be made available to candidates contesting elections.

    Tewari and Karti Chidambaram had raised concerns over the manner in which the presidential poll in the party is being held.

    Underlining the need of a well-defined electoral college, Karti Chidambaram said any ad hoc electoral college is meaningless.

    In a tweet on Wednesday. he said: “Every election needs a well defined & clear electoral college. The process of forming the electoral college must also be clear, well defined & transparent. An ad hoc electoral college is no electoral college.”

    Anandpur Sahib MP Tewari too has raised doubts over the electoral rolls ahead of the party’s presidential poll, saying these should be made public to ensure a free and fair election process.

    Tewari was reacting to veteran party leader Mistry’s remark that party members wishing to contest can get access to the list in PCC offices as the list of electors has not been made public.

    In a series of tweets on Tuesday, he said: “With great respect @MD_Mistry ji How can there be a fair & free election without a publicly available electoral roll ? Essence of a fair & free process is that names & addresses of electors must be published on @INCIndia website in a transparent manner.”

    Uyghurs call for global action, citing UN report on atrocities

    The Uyghurs from 20 countries urged UNHRC to take up the issue in a Special Session or Urgent Debate with the aim of establishing a Commission of Inquiry (COI) to independently examine the treatment of Uyghurs …reports Asian Lite News

    A group of 60 Uyghur organizations from 20 countries are calling for an immediate response to put an end to atrocities against Uyghurs, following the release of a report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) today. Uyghurs are calling for seven concrete actions by governments, multilateral bodies, and corporations.

    “This UN report is extremely important. It paves the way for meaningful and tangible action by member states, UN bodies, and the business community,” said World Uyghur Congress President Dolkun Isa. “Accountability starts now.”

    “This is a game-changer for the international response to the Uyghur crisis,” said Uyghur Human Rights Project Executive Director Omer Kanat. “Despite the Chinese government’s strenuous denials, the UN has now officially recognized that horrific crimes are occurring.”

    The report offers the most definitive assessment of the issues faced by Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples from the world’s leading human rights body. Most notably, it finds that “arbitrary and discriminatory detention” of Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples, within the context of other restrictions, “may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity.”

    The report also notes that the human rights abuses have included “far-reaching, arbitrary and discriminatory restrictions on human rights and fundamental freedoms, in violation of international norms and standards,” and that documentation of “patterns of torture or ill-treatment” is credible, including “incidents of sexual […] violence.”

    On the crime of state-imposed forced labour, the report affirms the “deep concerns” of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), stating that the “OHCHR shares, from the human rights perspective, the concerns laid out by the ILO supervisory bodies.”

    The report recommends for the Chinese government to take steps to release those arbitrarily detained; clarify the whereabouts of detained family members; cease intimidation and reprisals against Uyghurs in connection with their advocacy; to cooperate with the ILO Committee of Experts recommendations; and provide “adequate remedy and reparation to victims” of human rights abuses.

    The report recommends that governments should “refrain from returning [Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples] to China” and “provide humanitarian assistance, including medical and psycho-social support, to victims in the States in which they are located.”

    The report also makes recommendations to the business community to strengthen human rights risk assessments in the surveillance and security sector in particular, and for companies to respect human rights across activities and business relationships.

    Uyghur

    What are the demands?

    • The UN Human Rights Council to take up the issue in a Special Session or Urgent Debate with the aim of establishing a Commission of Inquiry (COI) to independently examine the treatment of Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples;
    •  The UN Special Procedures to consider evidence presented in the report and respond with recommendations for the UN and the international community;
    •  The UN Office on Genocide Prevention to immediately conduct an assessment of the risks of atrocities—including genocide and crimes against humanity—targeting Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples, and to alert relevant actors and advocate for a proportionate response;
    •  The ILO to take note of the report, include additional evidence of forced labour in its Committee of Experts annual report, and for delegates at the International Labour Conference to lodge a complaint against China for failure to uphold its obligations;
    •  UNESCO to urgently investigate cases of destruction or marginalisation of natural and cultural heritage, including UNESCO-listed heritage (Muqam, Karez well system, Manas, Meshrep, and the Tianshan mountain range);
    • The global business community to immediately cut all ties with entities assisting the government to carry out the atrocities, especially the programs of high-tech surveillance and state-imposed forced labour; and
    • Governments and international organizations to take urgent steps to protect Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples at imminent risk of refoulement, in line with a recent joint statement from 22 refugee and human rights groups and 50 Uyghur organizations.

    “The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has waited far too long to deliver its report. The truth of China’s atrocities has once again been documented, and there can be no shying away from the obligation to act. Stopping genocide was a foundational purpose of the UN, and it must be upheld now,” said Campaign for Uyghurs Executive Director Rushan Abbas.

    ‘’Now that the leading UN office on human rights has spoken, there are no more excuses for failure to hold the Chinese government accountable,” said Elfidar Iltebir, Uyghur American Association President.

    “Our people are enduring genocide that has been documented through research, exposed by the Uyghur Tribunal, and designated by parliaments,” said Hidayet Oghuzhan, President of the International Union of East Turkistan Organizations. “As the diaspora community, we call on international human rights organizations and governments to take immediate action to stop the ongoing genocide.”

    In September 2021, OHCHR confirmed it was “finalizing its assessment” and in December a spokesperson announced that the report would be released in a matter of weeks. In an open letter in March 2022, over 200 human rights groups urged the High Commissioner to promptly release her Office’s report following the long delay.

    The report comes after the visit of the High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, to East Turkistan in May 2022, amidst criticism from governments, international organisations, and Uyghur groups that the trip amounted to little more than a propaganda victory for the Chinese government.

    Since China’s review by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) in August 2018, where members registered “alarm” at reports of mass detention, UN experts have indicated deep concerns over the deteriorating human rights situation in China—and the Uyghur region in particular.

    UN experts have issued 83 communications and 27 press releases to China since 2018, but noted they “have yet to see any signs of political will to address the concerns raised.” The Chinese government has not replied to 19 pending visit requests and rejected all Universal Periodic Review recommendations to provide unhindered access to experts.

    In June 2020, 50 UN experts called for “decisive measures” to protect fundamental freedoms in China, including the creation of a UN mechanism to “closely monitor, analyse and report annually on the human rights situation in China.” On June 10, 2022, this call was reiterated by 42 UN experts, noting a lack of political will to address the concerns raised.

    A growing number of governments have also expressed alarm about the human rights situation in China—notably the atrocities perpetrated against Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples. The U.S. State Department determined in January 2021 that this treatment amounted to genocide and crimes against humanity, and parliaments in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and the European Parliament have all passed motions or resolutions condemning the atrocity crimes.

    ‘My priorities made sense to no one but me’

    Sen, who is the Child Protection Ambassador at ‘Save the Children India’ says her emphasis is on every aspect of the fight to end child trafficking, child labour and child marriage…writes Sukant Deepak

    She remembers her time in the Indian film industry as fun and unique. Someone who has worked in over 20 films in different languages across the world and shot with directors like Ketan Mehta, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Goutam Ghose here, actor, writer and child-rights activist Nandana Sen decided early in her film career (“quite stubbornly, in fact”) that she wanted to work in the industry in a certain way, though it was not necessarily the way the latter was used to working.

    “My priorities made sense to no one but me; well-wishers in the film world often remarked that they did not understand why I accepted certain films and turned down others. But the industry was extremely generous to me, giving me lots of work and allowing me to indulge in my many eccentricities, including disappearing for months to do obscure independent films around the world,” remembers Sen, who was seen in films like ‘Black’, ‘Rang Rasiya’ and ‘My Wife’s Murder’ among others.

    This Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) trained actor smiles when asked if being the daughter of Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen and Padma Shri awardee writer and academic Nabaneeta Dev Sen was ‘pressuring’… “No, and I have to thank my parents entirely for that. Somehow they always had immense confidence in me, and never batted an eyelid when I changed my life around, time and again or chose a profession unfamiliar to them both — like cinema. Being academics, I think they were reassured by the fact that I was always a good student!”

    Admitting that being raised by two women poets — her mother and grandmother Radharani Debi, shaped her outlook most fundamentally, besides ‘Bhalo-Basa’, a heritage house she grew up in, she adds, “Growing up there shaped me as much as studying at Harvard, or living around the world, did. Ever since the 1930s, that house has always been filled with books, adda, and artists. Ma and Dimma were fearless public voices too, and their values and priorities had a huge impact on the choices I made, as an artist as well as an activist.”

    For someone who believes in the transformative power of the creative arts — for instance, the films she selected had social-political consciousness at heart, whether exploring religious fundamentalism (‘The War Within’, USA), disability rights (‘Black’, India), lesbian love during apartheid (‘The World Unseen’, UK and South Africa), or censorship and freedom of expression (‘Gudia’ and ‘Rang Rasiya’, India), she adds, “Also, all my books for kids have girl heroes, often with single mothers, and celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of identities.”

    Sen, who is the Child Protection Ambassador at ‘Save the Children India’ says her emphasis is on every aspect of the fight to end child trafficking, child labour and child marriage.

    “We have done several great campaigns together. We have also publicly addressed youth leaders about transformative engagement and campaigned extensively for girls’ safety and education. Our collaboration has been very rewarding,” says Sen, who studied literature at Harvard University.

    Currently working on her next book in the Mambi series; a film script set in the intersection of cinema, journalism and politics in India; and a multi-generational book titled ‘Mother Tongues,’ she asserts she will always love cinema as a medium, as an actor and a screenwriter.

    “You will see me back on a film set once my feisty seven-year-old, is a little older, though I will never stop writing books. I am loving every moment I spend with my family, and with my writing.”

    Pushpa screened at Moscow Film Fest

    The film has been screened under the category of ‘Block Busters’ around the world at the film festival…reports Asian Lite News

    Even after almost a year of its release the Allu Arjun-starrer ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ continues to make waves. This time the film has created noise on the international stage as it was recently screened at Moscow Film Festival.

    The film has been screened under the category of ‘Block Busters’ around the world at the film festival. Taking to Instagram, the Embassy of India in Moscow shared Allu Arjun’s poster and wrote: “We gladly announce that the film ‘Pushpa – The Rise: Part 1’ has been selected by the Moscow International Film Festival under the category of ‘Block Buster hits around the world’”.

    “The film ‘Pushpa – The Rise: Part 1’ starring Allu Arjun, Fahad Faasil, Rashmika Mandanna directed by Sukumar Bandreddi has created sensation all over the world and has stood as the highest grosser in India for the year 2021”, the embassy further mentioned in their Insta post.

    From Allu Arjun’s popular dance number ‘Srivalli’ to his heroic screen presence in ‘Oo Antava Oo Oo Antava’ along with Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Pushpa has been a box-office phenomenon and can make well for a case study for a film that broke records at the box-office with practically no marketing and promotions before the theatrical release.

    The film went to theatres with just a cold poster launch and limited digital engagement and gave stiff competition to ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, and effectively decimated the multi-starrer sports drama ’83’. Pushpa’s digital premier further took the film’s popularity to places unheard of.
