Pakistan replaces Turkey in Qatar’s strategic calculus

Now with Shehbaz Sharif in the driver’s seat in Pakistan’s politics, ties with Qatar are expected to forge ahead, given the Qatari royal family’s help to the Sharif family, writes Aditi Bhaduri

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has wrapped up his Qatar visit with a sense of achievement. The cash-strapped debt and terrorism ridden country, now battling devastating floods and 24.9 % inflation has extracted a promise of three billion dollars in investments, two billion US dollars to be disbursed in the next 12 months, and a contract for allowing the Pakistani army to provide security to the gas rich country for the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Not everyone in Pakistan is happy about the latter but there is little they can do about it. Pakistan’s economic dependence on Qatar overrules their fears. Sharif’s visit took place days before the IMF board decided to release $1.2 billion in financing to Pakistan. In fact, the meeting between Pakistani and IMF officials for a $ 6 billion bailout package for Pakistan took place in Qatar’s capital too.

At a time when Pakistan badly needs an IMF loan to bail it out from its dire economic straits, its traditional allies Saudi Arabia and the UAE have committed to one billion dollar each only. Qatar has come to its rescue with its promise of two billion in addition to the already pledged 3 billion dollars earlier in 2019, though some warn that these may overlap.

Pakistanis are also seeking a deferred payment plan for the LNG bought under a long term deal. And there are also some 150,000 Pakistanis who live and work in Qatar, remitting back more than 2 billion US dollars to their home country.

Recently, Qatar’s navy donated its entire fleet of 10 WS-61 Sea King helicopters to the Pakistani navy, which had faced a shortage of maritime utility helicopters.

Then there is the personal angle – it was Qatar that had intervened to bail out the Sharifs during the infamous PanamaGate scandal. Therefore, Shahbaz Sharif may not be in a position to heed popular outrage, in any case Pakistan’s parliament has approved of the deal.

What explains Qatar’s embrace of Pakistan? Could Pakistan be replacing Turkey in Qatar’s strategic calculations?

Of course, the two have always shared cordial relations and Pakistan has provided security services to the sheikhdom even earlier, with at least 600 Pakistani security personnel stationed in the country serving in the different security services. And Qatar has always hosted a large Pakistani expat community working there.

A closer reading, however, will reveal that ties further blossomed since 2017, when Qatar fell out with its fellow GCC members, and Saudi Arabia, followed by its allies UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt imposed a blockade on the former, levelling allegations of supporting interference and terrorism on their territories. Pakistan took a neutral stand, its trade with Qatar actually increased during this time growing by official estimates to over 230 percent to $2.6 billion in 2018, as Qatar looked to forge extra-regional partnerships with countries like Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan.

A direct shipping line between them was inaugurated in 2017 to connect Hamad Port with Karachi Port, contributing to this increase. An irate Saudi King Salman even asked which side of the divide Pakistan was. High profile visits also characterized this period, with Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani visiting Islamabad in 2019. Following the visit, Qatar announced that it would invest $3 billion in Pakistan, in the form of deposits and direct investments. In 2018 Pakistan became the largest beneficiary of Qatar’s initiative to educate 10mn out-of-school children around the world, as Qatar supported the Federal Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to launch a programme to educate 1mn out-of-school children in Pakistan.  In February 2021 Qatar Petroleum signed a long-term 10-year agreement with the Pakistan State Oil Company to supply Pakistan with up to 3mn tonnes per year of liquefied natural gas. And Qatar is interested in participating in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Even as Prime Minister Imran Khan tried to do a balancing act, he was forced to choose to side with Qatar and Turkey when India reorganized Jammu and Kashmir, and its Gulf allies Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Bahrain responded with understanding. Turkey took a stridently anti-India stand and together with Qatar the three tried to forge a parallel Islamic bloc to the existing Saudi-led Organisation of Islamic Conference. Pakistan also helped facilitate Doha’s hosting of the Taliban.

Now with Shehbaz Sharif in the driver’s seat in Pakistan’s politics, ties with Qatar are expected to forge ahead, given the Qatari royal family’s help to the Sharif family. This will be helpful for Qatar, which with its $445 billion sovereign wealth fund and the world’s largest natural gas reserves needs those like Turkey and Pakistan – with the Muslim world’s largest armies – to be its foot soldiers. This, even as the former’s covert rivalry with its GCC fellow members continue in spite of the Al Ula rapprochement in early 2021.

While Doha also presented Turkey with a $15 billion bailout package in 2018, and expanded Turkish military presence on its territory, economic mishandling has forced Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan to mend fences with Qatar’s rivals Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as re-establish diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv. While Erdogan’s political grip over Turkey turns increasingly shaky, Pakistan’s turn towards Islamism – converging with that of Qatar’s – remains stable, despite whichever party is in power.

Turkey also remains less dependent on Qatari energy resources, unlike Pakistan, which is heavily dependent on them. While Qatar acts as the conduit between the Taliban and the international community, Pakistan’s hold over the group or at least over some factions within the Taliban, remains strong, while Turkey’s relationship with the Taliban is lukewarm. Finally, Pakistan is the only nuclear Muslim country. All these may make Pakistan both more accessible and desirable a partner for Qatar. India should be watching carefully.

Afghanistan owes $1.4 bn in debt to foreign countries

Afghanistan made USD 151 million in revenue from its customs offices and other sources over the last year…reports Asian Lite News

Amid the economic downturn in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power, the country now owes USD 1.4 billion in debt to foreign countries and major financial institutions.

“We are in debt at around USD 1.4 billion since the time of Republic government,” said Nasratullah Mahmood, general director of the treasury of the Ministry of Finance, as Khaama Press quoted.

“The debt is for 30, 40 and even a 45-year period which will be paid gradually,” he said.

In another statement, a senior official of the Ministry of Finance said that Kabul has paid more than USD 6 million in debts to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) and called for transparency and proper documentation of the procedures as border customs contribute to a much bigger part of the government’s overall revenue.

Afghanistan made USD 151 million in revenue from its customs offices and other sources over the last year, reported Khaama Press citing the MoF.

“Over one last year, more than 65 billion Afs from taxes have been collected,” said Hedayatullah Badri, acting Minister of Finance.

Moreover, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) said that the exports and imports have had a positive impact on this year’s revenue, adding the surge in exports of coal caused the rise in the country’s annual revenue.

The rising crisis in Afghanistan has hit small enterprises the hardest and private companies have laid off more than half of their employees due to a shortage in sales and a drastic decline in the consumer demand for the products, according to the latest survey conducted by the World Bank. According to the survey, small enterprises have been hit hardest with about 38 per cent of them seizing operations, compared to 25 per cent among medium and 35 per cent among large businesses in the country.

The findings also show Afghan domestic inputs have become more expensive and yet difficult to obtain due to supplier closure and supply chain disruptions, which all lead to price inflation since the beginning of political uncertainty.

As per a local survey, the rate of poverty in the country has exceeded 95 per cent since the fall of the former government while 56 per cent are seeking to leave the country amid a drop in daily income. Moreover, millions of Afghans are on the brink of starvation as the country reels from a humanitarian crisis. (ANI)

India, China hold military level talks

During the talks, the Indian and Chinese sides under the leadership of the division commanders discussed issues related to peace in the Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) sector and other areas…reports Asian Lite News

The Indian and Chinese armies have once again held talks on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). It is being told that this conversation has taken place at the Division Commander level.

Sources familiar with the matter said such meetings are held regularly after every three months at various levels to discuss the issues of maintaining peace and border management.

The meeting comes at a time when it is being claimed that the Chinese PLA is continuing heavy construction activities along the LAC to further upgrade its military infrastructure and connectivity in the region.

During the talks, the Indian and Chinese sides under the leadership of the division commanders discussed issues related to peace in the Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) sector and other areas.

Earlier, India and China held talks in the Chushul sector in the wake of recent airspace violations by the Chinese Air Force, where India warned China against any misadventure.

Trade with Pakistan not a priority for India

Despite rising challenges, Sharif’s statements on Kashmir only underscores Pakistan’s continued “obsession” on Kashmir at a time when economy should have been the thrust…writes Mahua Venkatesh

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s stand that trade with India will not be resumed until the Kashmir issue is resolved will cause worry for the country’s economic managers and business community who have been keen to start cross-border trade to import scarce food goods that are fuelling inflation.

The severe floods that have damaged large swathes of crops have added to Pakistan’s problems. Despite rising challenges, Sharif’s statements on Kashmir only underscores Pakistan’s continued “obsession” on Kashmir at a time when economy should have been the thrust.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed concern and sympathy over the havoc caused by the floods in Pakistan, Sharif in sharp contrast appears to be out to score political points at home by harping on Kashmir.

“There won’t have been problems about trading with India but genocide is going on there and Kashmiris have been denied their rights. Kashmir has been forcibly annexed through abolition of Article 370,” Sharif claimed.

Sharif’s statement came after Miftah Ismail, his finance minister, underlined the need for opening up imports of vegetables from India.

New Delhi, however, is not losing any sleep over the issue.

Sources said that for India, resumption of trade with Pakistan has not been on the priority list. “Trade between the two countries have remained suspended for a few years now but it has had no impact on our economy, Pakistan’s decision – either way- therefore is of no consequence to us,” Sharad Kumar Saraf, former president, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) told India Narrative. Saraf added that from India’s lens, the issue of terrorism continues to be the major issue.

Even as Islamabad managed to get a loan of $1.17 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday, the multilateral lender warned that the country is at a challenging economic juncture.

The local media has criticised the Pakistani government for not delinking politics and economy.

“Pakistan’s diplomatic relationships should be based on shared interests with each country. There are several examples of countries whose economic links remain intact despite political or border conflicts,” Karachi-based the News wrote, citing examples of trade between India-China and China-US.

Pakistan suspended trade with India in August 2019 after New Delhi decided to abrogate Article 370 removing the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan also downgraded diplomatic ties with India. Earlier in 2019, after the ghastly Pulwama terror attack which left 40 Indian soldiers dead, India withdrew the ‘Most Favoured Nation’ status accorded to Pakistan.

Music business in the new era of contents

The music industry is a very fast-changing sector being a mom of two kids, how you manage the business…writes N. LOTHUNGBENI HUMTSOE

Deepti Gupta, a woman who has worked in corporate for ten years and is a mother of two, founded the new age music label company “Treasure Records” in her spare time. Having a woman in the band helps narrow the gender gap in India’s extremely fast-growing and crucial music industry.

Founded in 2021 by Deepti Gupta, CEO, along with her husband, Deepak Gupta, Managing Director, Treasure Records released its first music video, “Mean”, featuring Sameeksha Sud and Avinash Mishra, in March 2022, and its Second Music Video “JAANIYA” featuring Ankit Tiwari as a singer in August 2022 on their official YouTube Channel. The video received an overwhelming response with close to 2 million views. The power duo also owns a production house, “Treasure Tales Media Pvt. Ltd.” for the production of films, web series, and music videos.

Deepti walks us through her career in the music business with the goal of ushering in a new era of concepts, viewpoints, performers, and content for their audience.

Coming from a corporate background and starting a music label company, what are the challenges you faced as a women entrepreneur in this segment?

Deepti: Coming from a corporate background and launching a music label is not that simple for me, as being a mother of two made starting a business difficult. I lost my communication skills and confidence over a 5-year period because I was totally cut off from the corporate industry where I used to meet people. During Covid, I was so involved with my family that I completely lost my confidence and communication skills, which was the main challenge that I faced as a female entrepreneur in this industry. Because, as we all know, this industry requires a person to be very outspoken.

No one in my family or relatives has any prior entertainment industry experience that can assist me in this business. However, I am extremely grateful to some of my friends who have connections in the entertainment industry and helped me find the best music composer, singer, and director. Siddhant Sachdeva is a famous director who helped me out with the best singer and team for Treasure Records. I must say that having 10 years of corporate experience aided me in planning, plotting, and executing the plan. In this journey, I owe everything to my husband, who encouraged me to face the challenge and return to the business.

There are very few women entrepreneurs in the music industry in India. what made you start a music label company- Treasure records?

Deepti: Not just a few, but I believe men and women have equal opportunities in this field. I believe that this industry is equal in that women receive equal recognition and there are many women who have broken this taboo in the Entertainment industry, including female producers, to name a few Ekta Kapoor, Gauri Khan, Twinkle Khanna, and director Deepa Mehta. If there is an actor, there is also an actress, and if there is a male dancer, there is also a female choreographer. Women work in a variety of fields, not just the entertainment industry. When we look at scientists, the army, the navy, and the air force, as well as businesses with remote workers, we see that women work everywhere. Because of the social media capability, they had also established their business there too.

The music industry is a very fast-changing sector being a mom of two kids, how you manage the business.

Deepti: Yes, the music industry is a rapidly changing industry. People enjoy music, and they change their playlists on a daily basis based on their preferences. Music/entertainment is not a 9 to 5 job where you work on the same process every day. Every day there is a release of a new song or campaign based on occasion, and celebration because India is a country of festivals where we celebrate everything. There is so much creativity. It is not difficult, but it is an interesting and creative process, and if I talk about myself as a mom of two kids and managing the business, it is quite challenging, and my kids will always be my first priority, so I need to follow a routine to manage both equally as I believe if there is no discipline and routine in one’s life you can’t achieve anything.

How YouTube is helping new-age production houses like treasure records to reach the target audience?

Deepti: Yes, YouTube is assisting new-age production houses, but it is not limited to the music or entertainment sectors, but in every sector/segment. We live in a digital world and YouTube has become a source of livelihood for many families. If we can see who is cooking, dancing, and educating, it helps them to grow and show their ability to their target audience. As noted previously, television is the only medium available, and it is very expensive. Now, YouTube is the simplest, least expensive, and most accessible option. We can see that not everyone is not comfortable with technology and the majority of the ladies who have no idea how to run or upload video are now managing their channels with the assistance of their family while sitting at home, spreading the message they desire. YouTube is the most popular and accessible platform for startups. Reach is excellent. It is a complete transformation. Previously, we used physical cassettes to reach our intended audience. But now we see that the internet and social media platforms have made it simple for us.

What do you think is the future of Women’s entrepreneurship in the Indian music industry?

Deepti: Lata Mangeshkar is an excellent example of how women in the music industry always have a bright future. Other females in the creative sector, such as producers, cinematographers, directors, actors, and business owners, have come a long way and accomplished a lot. There are women all over the place. I believe that women will have a brighter future in the coming years.

Body weight exercises for full body strength training

Before moving on to the next exercise, perform each for 40 to 60 seconds. Between each exercise, take a 20 to 30 second break to allow your body to recuperate…writes Mujtaba Kamal

If you want to build strength but do not have access to weights, all you need is a solid training regimen and some room to work out. Building strength and endurance using bodyweight exercises is another effective technique to engage in resistance training.

Here are five exercises that will engage your entire body while concentrating on the four main components of fitness: strength, mobility, activation, and stability. These five exercises target the lower body, core, and upper body. The skeleton of your body is supported by your shoulders, torso, and hips. Regularly performing these exercises can help you build strength while also enhancing your movement. Perform these exercises for a longer period of time to complete a workout, or even for a shorter period of time to warm up before your next exercise session. You might perform a routine known as a “Pillar Prep” by combining these exercises.

Before moving on to the next exercise, perform each for 40 to 60 seconds. Between each exercise, take a 20 to 30 second break to allow your body to recuperate.

High plank arm reach

This is a fantastic exercise to work every muscle in your body! It has anti-rotational effects and works the shoulders and core. Additionally, it honed your body’s stability and balance. By extending the plank, this exercise also strengthens the core.

How to perform:

First, we get into a High Plank: Palms under the shoulders, body aligned in a straight line from shoulders to ankles

Ensure your core is engaged: Squeeze the trunk area close to the spine.

Alternate arms are raised slowly, till the shoulder is close to the ear.

Try and avoid swinging the body and the hips while alternating the hands

Bent over T Spine Rotation

This motion enhances the hip hinge and enables a unique focus on the thoracic spine. Injury risk is decreased while mobility and posture are improved. It’s a fantastic warm-up exercise to incorporate into your exercises, too!

How to perform:

Keeping the knees soft, hinge from the hips.

Maintain a neutral spine and keep the chest lifted.

Once in the bent-over position, extend your arms towards your feet.

Keeping your hips facing down, laterally raise one arm, open the chest up the same side, the working arm reaching towards the ceiling with fingertips pointing up.

Slowly lower down and repeat on the other side.

When at the topmost position, try and ensure both palms are in the same line, keep opening the chest out, and feel that work on the t-spine.

Hollow hold

A fantastic method to make sure that your entire body is engaged and to really push those muscles is to perform an isometric exercise. The spine is stabilised and the deepest core muscles are strengthened by a hollow hold. This exercise engages all of the anterior chain muscles, including your obliques, hip flexors, and quads, in addition to strengthening your core.

How to perform:

Lying on your back, press the lower back firmly onto the mat.

Extend your arms up with the shoulders in line with your ears

Keep your feet together, toes pointed and lift your legs off the floor

Your arms, shoulders, legs and feet are off the floor, with your lower back pressed firmly down on the ground, creating the hollow position.

Pulse Squat

An useful exercise that engages the glutes, quadriceps, and hamstrings—the three main muscles in your lower body. Due to the continual engagement and tension in the muscles during this activity, more calories are burned as well as more muscle is gained.

How to perform:

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with your toes slightly pointing out.

Initiate the movement from the hips, push back and lower down keeping your chest up and back straight.

Sink down till your thighs are parallel to the floor and ensure your core is engaged at the squat position.

Come up halfway, without fully extending the knees or the hips, then lower back down to the squat position.

Repeat this up and down movement, or pulses, for time or reps as you see fit.

Hip opener to hip extension

Focusing on hip mobility is crucial if you want to perform your other exercises and lifts correctly and have a wide range of motion. This exercise combines two others that target hip flexibility and range of motion.

How to perform:

Sit with your knees bent and your toes pointing towards the ceiling.

You can use support by placing your hands under your shoulders next to your hips.

Drop both the knees to one side touching the floor, where the front heel and back knee are close together.

Try not to lift your hips up while you do this

Your torso and shoulders still facing forward, feel the hips open out.

From here, hoist yourself up onto your knees, push your hips forward and squeeze your glutes.

Return to the seated position and repeat on the other side.

Belgium urges EU to manage soaring energy prices

De Croo has therefore started talks with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to study possibilities of reducing energy prices…reports Asian Lite News

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has urged the EU to take responsibility to manage the skyrocketing energy prices that had reached an unsustainable level in recent weeks.

“It is only at (the) European level that we will succeed in reducing prices. Only Europe can achieve this,” he said on Wednesday.

The federal government and the representatives of Belgium’s federated entities met in Brussels on Tuesday in a Consultation Committee (CODECO) and managed to come up with additional measures to deal with soaring energy prices at national level, while at the same time calling on the EU to assume its responsibilities.

De Croo has therefore started talks with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to study possibilities of reducing energy prices.

“Since March, our country has been pleading for measures to be taken on gas prices, and in particular to achieve a freeze on gas prices,” he said, adding that von der Leyen announced at the beginning of the week that an emergency mechanism would be put in place to lower energy prices.

In view of the rising energy prices, CODECO has decided to extend all the support measures already in force until March 31, 2023. These include a 6 per cent VAT reduction on gas and electricity, reduction of excise duties on fuel, and extension of social tariffs and fuel vouchers to target groups.

Among other measures announced, the public authorities will lower heating. They will reduce the use of air conditioning and turn off the lights in every building.

The Belgian Prime Minister also called for the responsibility of every citizen to reduce their energy consumption.

In addition, negotiations, which aims to obtain from banks deferral of the mortgage payment, are also underway with the financial sector to help some people with higher energy bills. Negotiations with the financial sector in financing energy-saving measures are also underway.

Leaders of other delegations stressed in their speeches that the event was strictly defensive in nature…reports Asian Lite News

International military drills have been launched in Russias Far East, with countries including India and China taking part, media reports said.

The US has voiced concern over Moscow’s ability to get other nations to participate in the exercises, RT reported.

The opening ceremony of the Vostok 2020 strategic exercises took place at a military range in Russia’s Primorsky Region on Wednesday, the Russian Defence Ministry said.

Russia holds such drills annually, with the country’s military districts rotating each year as hosts. This year, the Eastern Military District welcomed 13 foreign nations, which accepted Russia’s invitation to send troops or military observers, RT reported.

Russian Deputy Defence Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, who represented the host nation at the ceremony, said the wide participation and scale of the exercise made it exceptional and demonstrated “the increased role and importance of joint training of our armed forces”.

Leaders of other delegations stressed in their speeches that the event was strictly defensive in nature.

Footage from the scene shows soldiers from participating nations marching as a military band plays. The list of foreign guests includes Azerbaijan, Algeria, Armenia, Belarus, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Syria, and Tajikistan. Nine of them sent troops to participate in the maneuvers portion of the exercises. Vostok 2022 includes war games for staff officers and field exercises for troops, as well as naval and aerial training. House panel slams UK govt’s response to Pak floods

Johnson said on Tuesday: “Our sympathies are very much with the people of Pakistan and we’ve seen the devastation there and it’s absolutely heart-rending…reports Asian Lite News

The government’s response to the flooding in Pakistan has been slammed as “risible” by Parliament’s International Development Select Committee, The Independent reported on Wednesday.

Writing to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the committee’s Chairwoman Sarah Champion said the support of up to £1.5 million ($1.7 million) announced last week would provide just 5 pence per person affected by the disaster, which has destroyed at least 700,000 homes.

Champion, an MP with the opposition Labour Party, added that she is “embarrassed” by the “pathetically small” support provided by Britain, saying the government’s move to include already existing funding to Pakistan means the UK is effectively providing “nothing.”

She added that Truss, who is running to become leader of the Conservative Party and therefore prime minister, must deliver an urgent statement on the extreme rainfall and flooding that has devastated much of Pakistan, and that it must be given to Parliament when it returns from its summer break on Monday.

Champion said the foreign secretary’s silence and poor financial support following the floods is part of a policy of “sustained indifference” from Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s administration toward Pakistan, which was Britain’s top aid recipient in 2019 but has now slid to seventh.

Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad last week said his “thoughts and prayers” were with the millions of Pakistanis who had been affected by the extreme weather. “The UK stands with the people of Pakistan during this time of need,” he added.

Johnson said on Tuesday: “Our sympathies are very much with the people of Pakistan and we’ve seen the devastation there and it’s absolutely heart-rending.

“Pakistan is traditionally one of the biggest recipients of UK overseas aid. We will of course make sure that we send a fitting package commensurate with the vital relationship that there is between the UK and Pakistan and people’s natural sympathies with those who have been affected by the floods.”
