DP World donates $2.5 mn, pledges logistics support to Pakistan

The donations are through the DP World Foundation, which was launched in April to carry out humanitarian work and facilitate initiatives financed by the public and private sectors…reports Asian Lite News

DP World Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem visited Pakistan last week, where he pledged logistics support and donated US$2.5 million to help people in the south of the country following the recent devastating floods.

After visiting flood-affected areas, the Chairman met with Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa. DP World donated US$1 million to the Pakistan Army Fund for Flood Affectees and pledged another US$1.5 million in relief items, including shelter, medication, food items, and cooking implements.

The donations are through the DP World Foundation, which was launched in April to carry out humanitarian work and facilitate initiatives financed by the public and private sectors.

“The devastation and impact on Pakistan are heart-breaking. Visiting areas affected by natural disasters always forces you to put things into perspective as you try to fathom the enormity of the situation. It could be months before we understand the scale of the damage. However, for now, we must look at the most efficient ways to extend relief to aid local communities in distress,” said Bin Sulayem.

Warehousing space at DP World’s facilities in Karachi will be set aside for logistics support, with DP World covering the cost of warehousing and stock management.

“The disaster is much worse than what most people realise. With more than one-third of the country affected, Pakistan’s economy has suffered a devastating blow that will run into the billions. As leaders representing the global business community, it is imperative to identify immediate support and relief for the people of Pakistan. We must collaborate closely with government institutions and join hands with private partners or NGOs, to mobilise support across the community,” he added.

DP World has provided expertise and resources to help the humanitarian community respond to major disasters since signing an agreement with the UN’s World Food Program in 2017. The company uses its experience as a global trade enabler working across six continents to help connect organisations, communities and individuals with the resources they need during emergencies.

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan made a telephone call to Yair Lapid, Prime Minister of the State of Israel.

During the phone conversation, Sheikh Abdullah thanked Prime Minister Lapid for the warm reception during his recent visit at the head of an official delegation to the State of Israel, which coincided with the two countries’ celebration of the two-year anniversary of their signing of the Abraham Accords Peace Agreement.

The trip is Sheikh Abdullah’s second visit to Israel since the UAE and Israel decided to normalise ties in September 2020.

The UAE and Bahrain signed US-brokered agreements to normalise their ties with Israel in September 2020. The move was followed later by Sudan and Morocco.

The UAE FM stressed that the success of the two countries in building fruitful and solid relations is a clear embodiment of the benefits of peace for ”our region and our ability” to work together for a prosperous future for generations.

He commended the statement of Lapid before the United Nations General Assembly in New York, during which he stressed the importance of peace for the peoples of the region and called for a two-state solution to achieve security and stability for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

Sheikh Abdullah also congratulated the Israeli Prime Minister on the occasion of the Jewish New Year, expressing his aspiration for the growth and development of relations between the two countries at all levels for the benefit of their peoples.

The UAE Foreign Minister was in Israel earlier this month with a delegation that included three other government ministers.

“We are changing the Middle East together. We are moving it from war to peace, from terrorism to economic cooperation, from a mess of violence and fanaticism to a dialogue of tolerance and cultural curiosity,” the Israeli Prime Minister said.

EC to decide which faction is real Shiv Sena

Senior advocates Maninder Singh, Neeraj Kishan Kaul, and Mahesh Jethmalani, assisted by advocate Abhikalp Pratap Singh, argued for the Shinde faction…reports Asian Lite News

In a big setback to Uddhav Thackeray’s faction, the Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to stop the Election Commission from deciding the claim of Eknath Shinde group to be the real Shiv Sena.

After a day-long hearing, a constitution bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud dismissed the interlocutory application filed on behalf of Thackeray’s faction. The apex court’s decision is very significant in view of the impending Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, where both Shinde and Thackeray factions would like to contest the poll.

The bench — also comprising Justices M.R. Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli, and P.S. Narasimha — said there would not be any stay on the proceedings before the Election Commission on intra party dispute and ‘bow and arrow’ symbol of the party. “We direct that there would be no stay of the proceedings before the Election Commission of India,” it said.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal, A.M. Singhvi and Devadatt Kamat represented the Thackeray’s faction. Sibal submitted that Shinde cannot approach the EC once he has incurred disqualification, saying “I challenged the very locus of the person who moved the EC”.

Sibal clarified that Shinde has incurred disqualification as his various acts amounted to “voluntarily giving up membership of the party” under the Tenth Schedule, and he also violated the party whip, which is also covered by the Tenth Schedule.

The Thackeray camp vociferously argued that since disqualification of Shinde and the MLAs supporting him was pending, therefore EC cannot consider their application over the party and the symbol. However, the top court declined to entertain this contention.

Senior advocates Maninder Singh, Neeraj Kishan Kaul, and Mahesh Jethmalani, assisted by advocate Abhikalp Pratap Singh, argued for the Shinde faction.

Senior advocate Arvind Datar represented the Election Commission.

Shinde’s faction counsel argued that under Article 324 of the Constitution, the EC possesses plenty of powers to deal with any situation which arises in relation to political parties and several party members have sent their representations to the EC supporting the Shinde group.

Kaul submitted that the nature of enquiry under Tenth Schedule and the Symbols Order are different.

Shinde’s faction counsel claimed a hopeless minority sought to remove him from the party, and contended that the Speaker, under the Tenth Schedule, has to exercise power to determine disqualification of a member and he cannot decide on the split or merger within a political party. Shinde faction counsel vehemently argued that a party member’s right to move the EC cannot be taken away.

The EC counsel argued that it worked independently, and its functions are different when compared with the Speaker. The counsel added that it can decide who held the majority in the party.

Shinde and his faction had rebelled against Thackeray, which forced him to resign as Maharashtra Chief Minister.

Shiv Sena’s General Secretary Subhash Desai had moved the apex court saying that Shinde and other MLAs, have purportedly initiated proceedings under para 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968 (Symbols Order) seeking to be recognised as the “real Shiv Sena” by the EC. Desai added that they are also claiming the right to use the election symbol of “bow and arrow” allotted to Shiv Sena.

Thackeray faction claimed that since the disqualification matter is pending in the apex court, Shinde faction are trying to illegally cobble up numbers and fabricate an artificial majority in the organisation.

The apex court, on July 11, asked the newly appointed Maharashtra Assembly Speaker not to go ahead with proceedings on the disqualification petitions.

Centre bans PFI, associates for 5 yrs

The notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs said PFI and its associates or affiliates have been indulging in unlawful activities, which are “prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty and security of the country”…reports Asian Lite News

After two rounds of nationwide raids and arrest of over 240 leaders and functionaries of Popular Front Of India (PFI) in a week, the centre last evening banned the outfit for five years over alleged terror activities.

A government notification said the PFI and its affiliate organisations or fronts have been declared “unlawful association” with immediate effect under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The government cited the outfit’s linkages with Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and said that PFI is involved in several criminal and terror cases.

The notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs said PFI and its associates or affiliates have been indulging in unlawful activities, which are “prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty and security of the country”, and that they have the potential to disturb public peace and communal harmony.

It said PFI has been pursuing a secret agenda to radicalise a particular section of the society, and that the outfit shows sheer disrespect towards the constitutional authority of the country.

“With funds and ideological support from outside, it has become a major threat to the internal security of the country,” the notification added.

The notification also stated that several criminal activities and brutal murders have been committed by PFI members over the past to create “reign of terror in public mind”.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967), the Central Government hereby declares the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates or affiliates or fronts including Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala as an ‘unlawful association’,” read a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

“Whereas, the Central Government, having regard to the above circumstances, is of firm opinion that it is necessary to declare the PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts as an unlawful association with immediate effect, and accordingly, in exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to sub-section (3) of section 3 of the said Act, the Central government hereby directs that this notification shall, subject to any order that may be made under section 4 of the said Act, have effect for a period of five years from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette,” it added.

As per the notification, the PFI is involved in several criminal and terror cases and shows sheer disrespect towards the constitutional authority of the country and with funds and ideological support from outside, it has become a major threat to internal security of the country.

“Investigations in various cases have revealed that the PFI and its cadres have been repeatedly engaging in violent and subversive acts. Criminal violent acts carried out by PFI include chopping off limb of a college professor, cold blooded killings of persons associated with organisations espousing other faiths, obtaining explosives to target prominent people and places and destruction of public property,” it added.

Three states – Karnataka, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh – have recommended a ban on the organisation, the ministry said.

Premises linked to PFI members across 15 states were first raided on September 22, in a coordinated move by National Investigating Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the state police, leading to over 100 arrests.

The second round of nationwide crackdown on the organisation was carried out yesterday. A total of 247 arrests have been made so far, officials said.

Besides PFI, it’s associate orgabisations – Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CF), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala – have also been banned.

Camila was photographed enjoying the Italian fashion house’s latest collection while Gigi took the catwalk by storm…reports Asian Lite News

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly joined supermodel Gigi Hadid for her work at the Milan Fashion Week (MFW) amid rumours that they’re dating.

On Monday, the Daily Mail released photos of the 47-year-old actor hanging out with his friends in Milan.

In the snapshots, the ‘Don’t Look Up’ actor could be seen wearing a baseball cap with his casual outfit, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Prior to the sighting, Entertainment Tonight reported that Leo is in Milan with the model.

“They are fully seeing each other,” a source added of the couple, who was first linked earlier this month.

A separate source claimed: “Gigi and Leo are the real deal. They’ve been hanging out a lot and are very into each other. Things are going well between them and they’re both happy.”

The source also claimed that Hadid, who shares a two-year-old daughter Khai with her former boyfriend Zayn Malik, invited the ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ leading man to attend the fashion event with her.

Gigi walked the runway for Versace’s Spring/Summer 2023 show on September 23 during MFW and a perhaps too familiar face was sitting front row, Leonardo’s former girlfriend Camila Morrone.

Camila was photographed enjoying the Italian fashion house’s latest collection while Gigi took the catwalk by storm.

Hadid and DiCaprio are reportedly dating as the actor is reportedly “pursuing” the 27-year-old beauty following his recent split from Camila. Further fueling the romance rumours, the two were spotted getting cozy at a party in New York City on September 10.

After their first sighting together in NYC, it’s said that Gigi and Leo’s possible romance is “upsetting” for Zayn, whom the model dated for nearly six years.

“Zayn still has hopes of reuniting with Gigi, they’re on good terms right now for their daughter’s sake but he’s made it clear he would love another chance with her so all of this news about her and Leo has been upsetting for him,” an insider told HollywoodLife.com on September 15.

“Gigi is doing her best to manage it all, but it’s definitely stirring up drama on Zayn’s side that she’s having to deal with.”

Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola Holmes is back on the case in the official trailer for ‘Enola Holmes 2’, which will arrive on Netflix on November 4, reports ‘Variety’.

An extension of the iconic Sherlock Holmes character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the franchise, ‘Variety’ adds, stars Brown as the youngest sibling of the Holmes family, who must come into her own as a capable detective, while facing down her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill).

The sequel and its predecessor are based on ‘The Enola Holmes Mysteries’, the young adult fiction book series created by Nancy Springer.

The first film chronicled Enola’s search for her mother Eudoria Holmes, played by Helena Bonham Carter, which offered many twists and turns for the young sleuth to navigate. Netflix describes the mystery of the sequel as one of “historic proportions”, needing “two Holmes to handle”, indicating a larger role for Cavill’s Sherlock.

Harry Bradbeer returns to direct the sequel, having previously helmed television episodes of ‘Fleabag’, ‘Ramy’ and ‘Killing Eve’ before taking on the ‘Enola Holmes’ franchise.

In addition to Cavill and Bonham Carter reprising their roles, the movie will also feature Louis Partridge, Adeel Akhtar, Susie Wokoma, Sharon Duncan-Brewster and David Thewlis playing supporting characters.

The original ‘Enola Holmes’ was initially planned for a theatrical release by Warner Bros. before Netflix picked up the distribution rights during the Covid-19 pandemic. Netflix released the first film on its streaming platforms in September 2020.
