‘Shameless’: Biden on Russia’s annexation move

Biden called Russia’s annexation move “shameless”…reports Asian Lite News

In response to Russia’s move to formally annex four more areas in occupied Ukraine after holding self-styled referendums, US President Joe Biden said that Washington will “never, never, never recognise” Moscow’s claims on Kiev’s sovereign territory.

The Kremlin announced on Thursday that President Vladimir Putin will on Friday formally declare the annexation of the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson at a major event at the Red Square in Moscow.

In the so-called referendums held last week, the regions voted to join Russia, the Kremlin added.

Addressing an event on Thursday, Biden called Russia’s move “shameless”.

“The US, I want to be very clear about this, will never, never, never recognise Russia’s claims on Ukraine sovereign territory,” the President was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the White House.

“This so-called referenda was a sham, an absolute sham, and the results were manufactured in Moscow… The true will of the Ukrainian people is evident every day as they sacrifice their lives to save their people and maintain the independence of their country and in defence of freedom as well.

“Russia’s assault on Ukraine in pursuit of Putin’s imperial ambitions is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the basic principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.

But in its announcement on Thursday, the Kremlin said the independence of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson was being recognised in accordance with international law and “enshrined in the Charter of the UN”.

Earlier, the Biden administration said that it will impose sanctions on Russia as a result of the referendums.

Meanwhile, European Union member states are also considering an eighth round of measures, including sanctions on anyone involved in the votes.

Also condemning Russia’s move, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that any annexation of a country’s territory based on the use of force violates the UN Charter and international law, the BBC reported.

It is a “dangerous escalation” that “has no place in the modern world”, he said.

In a phone call with Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also expressed his opposition to the plan and called on the Russian leader to reduce tension and give peace negotiations with Ukraine another chance.

In his response to the “pseudo referendums”, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “Russia will not get a new territory of Ukraine. Russia will annex itself to the catastrophe that it has brought to the occupied territory of our country.”

Meanwhile, preparations for Putin’s announcement were underway in Moscow, with a stage set up for a concert in Red Square, adorned with billboards proclaiming the four regions as part of Russia.

This is a repeat of Russia’s annexation of the southern Crimea Peninsular in 2014, which also followed a discredited referendum, says the BBC.

The Crimean annexation has never been recognised by the the international community.

Russia’s two houses of parliament will however, formally ratify the move next week.

In cooperation with the Saudi Universities Sports Federation (SUSF), the Saudi Yoga Committee organised the event in Riyadh…reports Asian Lite News

A virtual introductory lecture on Yoga was organised for all Saudi university representatives across the kingdom to spread awareness and motivate its practice as a lifestyle for all segments of society.

The lecture, organised on Monday, aimed to introduce both traditional yoga and yogasana sports to Saudi universities and give a variety of options to the students on university campuses to practice yoga, the Saudi Gazette reported.

The lecture covered both mental and physical health and plans to join professional yogasana sports training to be part of competitions locally and internationally.

In cooperation with the Saudi Universities Sports Federation (SUSF), the Saudi Yoga Committee organised the event in Riyadh.

The Saudi Gazette reported that the event came within the framework of an integrated system of programs and initiatives of the Saudi Committee for Yoga, under the title “Yoga for University Students of Both Genders”.

The event coincided with the arrival of the first yoga delegation to the Kingdom from the Asian Yogasana Sports Federation in India for the qualification course for the first Saudi batch of Yoga Referees, the report added.

The event included issues concerning the benefits of yoga for health and physical well-being in youth, yogasana sports for tournaments and competitions, and requirements for professional yoga training. It also included technical regulation of The Saudi Yoga Committee for Championships and Competitions in Saudi Universities.

The lecture, which motivated the youth to join professional yoga training, also shed light on the system of professional yogasana competitions within the university sports and the university league.

Nouf Almarwaai, President of the Saudi Yoga Committee, said that the committee seeks to achieve its vision of spreading yoga on a large scale within Saudi society. “Therefore it took the initiative to cooperate with the Saudi Universities Sports Federation in order to build a generation of yoga lovers, especially young people, to enjoy physical and mental health.”

Abu Dhabi: ‘Big Zero’ installations to collect single-use plastics

The installations will be mobile and will move to different places in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra Region to ensure that the capital is fully covered…reports Asian Lite News

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has introduced a range of ‘Big Zero’ installations throughout Abu Dhabi, which will act as collection points for the public to deposit single-use plastic bottles for recycling.

The installations will be placed in prime locations with high footfall such as malls, parks and events.

The ‘Big Zero’ installations are part of the larger Mission to Zero campaign. The public-facing comprehensive campaign aims to achieve an aspirational zero target for single-use plastic consumption, carbon emissions, waste, and harm to biodiversity in Abu Dhabi.

The installations will be mobile and will move to different places in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra Region to ensure that the capital is fully covered.

ADNEC Group hosted the first three installations of three large ‘Big Zero’ at ADNEC during the Abu Dhabi Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, which takes place from 26th September to 2nd October, where the Agency will have a dedicated presence to foster awareness around the goals of Mission to Zero.

Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of Environment Information, Science Outreach Management Division at EAD, said, “Mission to Zero is a multi-faceted outreach campaign and we want all residents of Abu Dhabi to join us in achieving the zero target of single-use plastic consumption. To support this aim, we are introducing ‘Big Zero’ installations that the public will be able to find in hotspots around Abu Dhabi, where they can deposit single-use plastic bottles for recycling purposes. We have signed an agreement with plastic collection and recycling service provider who will be responsible for the recycling of the bottles.”

He added, “At EAD, we like to think big – hence the name of the installations and we are certain that we will be able to collect a remarkable amount of bottles and avoid the public disposing of them in a way that harms our environment. We encourage Abu Dhabi residents to start collecting their single-use plastic bottles and heading to the nearest ‘Big Zero’ installation.”

Another element of Mission to Zero is the schools’ ‘Pile it Up’ Campaign – a challenge launched in Abu Dhabi schools that encourages them to compete in the collection of the most single-use plastic bottles for recycling. Furthermore, EAD has tasked young people to visit small grocery stores (baqalas) with posters to educate them on the harms of single-use plastic and encourage them to use more eco-friendly alternatives.

Mission to Zero is a component of the Single-Use Plastic Policy launched by EAD in 2020, and the implementation of a ban on single-use plastic bags in Abu Dhabi officially began on June 1st 2022. Major retailers such as Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society and Spar, Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, Choithrams, Spinneys and Waitrose are now offering multi-use grocery bags.

Pak PM house debugged after audio leak

A team was also monitoring mobile phone data and laptops of employees and officers of the Prime Minister’s House and Office…reports Asian Lite News

A high-powered committee constituted to probe the leak of informal conversations from the Prime Minister’s House in Pakistan is said to have combed and debugged the entire premises, a confirmed source said.

“They have conducted thorough inspection of the building,” the source told Dawn news.

The team was also monitoring mobile phone data and laptops of employees and officers of the Prime Minister’s House and Office.

Following a series of audio leaks over the last week, also featuring Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz and former premer Imran Khan, a new standard operating procedure (SOP) has been implemented under which no staff and officer was allowed to take their mobile phone inside the building.

“The phones are collected at the entrance and returned after office hours,” the source further told Dawn news.

Meanwhile, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said in a press conference on Thursday that state institutions had conducted an exercise to secure the PMO’s security, and confirmed some SOP of the Prime Minister’s House’s security had been changed.

He also said legislation was the need of the hour in the context of modern technology, especially cyber security.

“Many sensitive matters are discussed in important places where the environment should be such that everyone is 100 per cent satisfied with making national decisions in a secure environment,” he commented.

The Minister further said talks regarding a “cleansing process” were under way, and the government was mulling over the steps to take in the future.

Basic SOP was already in place for sensitive buildings and further orders have been given to make the security measures effective and prevent such breaches in the future, Tarar added.
