SC orders to remove all businesses within 500 metres of Taj Mahal

The top court passed the order on an application by a group of shop owners, who have been allotted space outside the 500-metre radius…reports Asian Lite News

The Supreme Court has directed the Agra Development Authority to remove all business activities within 500 metres from the boundary/peripheral wall of the Taj Mahal.

Senior advocate A.D.N. Rao, who is assisting the court as amicus curiae, submitted before a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S. Oka that directions should be issued for barring all commercial activities near the Taj Mahal. The mausoleum is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The top court was informed that a similar order was issued in May 2000, but it is appropriate to reiterate the direction, agreed with the submissions, and directed the Agra Development Authority to immediately clear the 500-metre radius of the Taj Mahal of all commercial activities.

“We allow the prayer and thus prayer ‘A’ of IA… reads as under: direct the Agra Development Authority to remove all business activities within 500 metres from the boundary/peripheral wall of the monument Taj Mahal which shall be in tune with Article 14 of the Constitution of India,” it said in its order which was uploaded on Monday.

The top court passed the order on an application by a group of shop owners, who have been allotted space outside the 500-metre radius. Counsel, representing the shop owners, submitted that at the western gate of the monument, illegal business activities are thriving, which is a violation of the court’s order.

    Simian attacks

Over a dozen reported cases of monkey attacks on unsuspecting tourists at Taj Mahal has created a scare and alarmed visitors. Though the security services have now woken up and are keeping a vigil, the sight of rampaging gangs of simians has become a major problem for the authorities in the Taj city.

The Archaeological Survey of India has put up hoardings and cut-outs to warn tourists to stay away from monkeys, as some tourists try to get friendly with the primates and pose for selfies. Officials said that they were trying to seek help from the Agra Municipal Corporation and some NGOs to round up the monkeys. But so far, no one has come forward with a solution. They say that the state Forest and Wildlife Departments are not supporting them or giving permission to catch the monkeys.

Locals have now demanded drastic action against violent and aggressive monkeys who have made life hell for people living in the old city areas.

Agra, these days, is living in the scare of bovine, canine, and simian menace. Even tourists have become victims. Two years ago, there was a hue and cry when a monkey snatched a new-born from the lap of a mother and killed the infant in Runukta village, 20 kms away.

The district authorities had then made a number of promises but nothing much happened. “The elected representatives have ignored the problem, but the condition is appalling as citizens live in constant fear of attacks from the monkey. Thousands of violent monkeys live in this area along the river Yamuna, as the faithfuls regularly feed them bananas and bread,” the local MLA, Purushottam Khandelwal, expressed his helplessness. UAE: Masks not mandatory in most public places

With regards to face masks, he said that they are still mandatory in medical facilities, mosques and public transportation, as well as for food service providers, the injured and suspected cases to ensure the safety of the community, especially vulnerable groups…reports Asian Lite News

The UAE will be relaxing COVID-19 restrictions nationwide, as well as sector-specific updates, which will come into effect starting 28th September, according to National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA).

Dr. Saif Al Dhaheri, NCEMA official spokesperson said that COVID-19 daily cases announcements will be discontinued, due to the significant recovery seen across the country, noting that the official websites of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre and NCEMA will continue to release relevant updated data.

“Concerning the Green Pass system, it has been updated to require vaccinated people and exempted individuals to take a PCR test once a month to maintain their green status, and once every 7 days for unvaccinated individuals” Al Dhaheri said. The green pass system is still a mandatory prerequisite for employees and visitors to enter federal authorities and entities, with the Green Pass system to be expanded to cover workers in the tourism and economic sectors, he stressed.

With regards to face masks, he said that they are still mandatory in medical facilities, mosques and public transportation, as well as for food service providers, the injured and suspected cases to ensure the safety of the community, especially vulnerable groups.

Otherwise, wearing masks is optional for all other open and closed facilities and spaces, Dr. Al Dhaheri explained, advising senior citizens and residents and people with chronic diseases to continue wearing them to ensure their safety.

In mosques and places of worship, precautionary procedures have been reduced, and social distancing for worshipers has been cancelled, he noted, adding that wearing face masks remains mandatory in mosques and places of worship to protect the health of vulnerable categories.

The tourism sector, including hotels and their facilities, parks and recreational spaces, and the economic sector, such as shopping centres and shops, in addition to various events, are vital and active sectors, therefore, the updated Green Pass requirements must be met to be allowed entry, Al Dhaheri further said.

The aviation sector will adopt precautionary measures in line with the national aviation protocol, with airlines to decide whether face masks will be mandatory or optional on airplanes, he added. The requirements for pre-departure testing for vaccinated and unvaccinated people will be determined based on the requirements of their travel destinations. As for those coming to the UAE, the current protocol remains applicable to both vaccinated and unvaccinated people, he further explained.

About the education sector, he stated that precautionary measures will be adopted in line with the national education protocol, and wearing face masks in open and closed spaces will be optional, with the new Green Pass requirements to be applicable.

With regards to the isolation period for positive cases, he said that the health sector decided to reduce this to five days, for both home or institutional isolation, with employers to take responsibility for institutional isolation measures, for example, in worker housing cities.

As for people who come into contact with confirmed cases, Al Dhaheri affirmed that they must take a PCR test if they show any symptoms, urging vulnerable categories to take a PCR test and monitor their condition for seven days, adding that the world is seeing general stability and is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, with most countries loosening their COVID-19-related restrictions, including the UAE.

Moreover, he pointed out that the updated procedures announced today are the product of analyses conducted based on data collected about the pandemic in the country, including new variants and hospitalisation and ICU admission rates.

The updated procedures are part of the initial phase for loosening restrictions, with further updates to be announced regularly, he explained, stressing that the UAE prioritises the community’s health and safety.

Dr. Al Dhaheri gave a brief about the UAE’s efforts since the detection of the first case in the country, highlighting its relentless drive to vaccinate its citizens and residents and keep a close eye on public health to ensure the best results in combatting the pandemic. He also underscored the UAE’s efforts in terms of conducting clinical trials for the vaccine, implementing remote education and work systems, as well as the humanitarian aid it provided to other countries, from vaccines, medical supplies and field hospitals.

These steps have led to the current period of stability and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the situation is stable in the country and cases are declining while deaths are almost always zero, Al Dhaheri added.

He attributed the UAE’s successful handling of the COVID-19 pandemic to the UAE’s wise leadership and frontline medical professionals, who continue to make tireless efforts to keep the pandemic in check, thanking them all for their invaluable contributions.

He also noted that these efforts were supported by the dedicated cooperation of the public in following precautionary measures and working with the government to ensure its success in its drive to contain the pandemic.

Arab League Raps Raids on Al-Aqsa

The Arab League held “the Israeli government responsible for inflaming tensions and igniting the situation,” reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

The Arab League condemned on Monday Israeli forces and settlers for breaking into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem.

In a statement, the Arab League held “the Israeli government responsible for inflaming tensions and igniting the situation.”

The Cairo-based pan-Arab bloc described the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the arrest of a number of Palestinians inside it as a flagrant violation of international law, saying the Israeli move has provoked feelings of Palestinians and Muslims in general.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli police broke into the holy site in the Old City of Jerusalem to remove Muslim worshippers and provide a safe ground for ultranationalist Jews marking the Jewish New Year (from Sept. 25 to 27 this year), official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

In a separate statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the Israeli provocative practices are “serious violation and dangerous escalation that undermine the chances of achieving a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause on the basis of the two-state solution.”

It warned that the continuation of aggression in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque puts more obstacles in the way of resuming the peace process.

‘No longer partner in peace process’

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that Israel has decided not to be a partner of Palestine in the peace process and that it will be treated as such.

“It is clear that Israel, which is ignoring the resolutions of international legitimacy, has decided not to be our partner in the peace process,” said Abbas in his speech to the General Debate of the UN General Assembly.

Israel has undermined the Oslo Accords, which it signed with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), he said, adding that it has and still is, through its premeditated and deliberate policies, destroying the two-state solution, he said.

“This proves unequivocally that Israel does not believe in peace. It believes in imposing a status quo by force and by aggression.

“Therefore, we do not have an Israeli partner anymore to whom we can talk. Israel is thus ending its contractual relationship with us,” said Abbas.

Palestine does not accept to remain the only party respecting the agreements it has signed with Israel in 1993. Those agreements are not valid anymore because of the persisting violations of Israel, he said.

“Therefore, it is our right, rather, our obligation to look for other means, to recover our rights and to achieve a peace built on justice, including the implementation of the resolutions that were adopted by our leadership, especially our parliament,” said Abbas.

The state of Palestine will also start the accession process to join other international organizations, he said.

Abbas called on the UN Secretary-General to work relentlessly to elaborate on an international plan to end the occupation of the land of Palestine to achieve peace, security and stability in the region, in line with UN resolutions and with the Arab Peace Initiative.

“The state of Palestine is looking forward to peace. Let us make this peace to live in security, stability, and prosperity for the benefit of our generation and all the people of the region,” he said.

    Two-state solution

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye has urged his Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid to prove his support for the two-state solution by stopping settlement building and ending the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip.

“Whoever claims to believe in the two-state solution must stop settlements, lift the siege on Gaza, open Jerusalem and stop the settlers’ repeated incursions into Al-Aqsa mosque, which have reached their climax today,” Ishtaye said on Monday during the weekly cabinet meeting, according to an official statement.

In his address to the UN General Assembly last week, Lapid said a large majority of Israelis, including him, “support the vision of the two-state solution” despite all obstacles, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Palestinian Prime Minister called for an international movement to protect the Palestinian people, hold Israel accountable for its actions and practices, and end the occupation.

The last direct peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians, sponsored by the US, broke down in 2014 over their deep differences on the issues of borders, security and settlement.

Shanti Dhariwal, Mahesh Joshi and Pratap Khachriyawas, representing the Gehlot group, visited him on Sunday night with three proposals and said “a strict no” for Sachin Pilot as the new CM, Maken said…reports Asian Lite News

Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath is likely to be pitched in to defuse the full blown political crisis in Rajasthan after the efforts of state in-charge Ajay Maken and Observer Mallikarjun Kharge went in vain, source said on Monday.

Before leaving for the national capital on Monday, Congress leader Maken, who was in Jaipur along with Mallikarjun Kharge to convene the CLP meeting for deciding on a new CM face, told media that three members from the Gehlot camp had met them with as many proposals, which had to be turned down to avoid conflicts of interests.

Shanti Dhariwal, Mahesh Joshi and Pratap Khachriyawas, representing the Gehlot group, visited him on Sunday night with three proposals and said “a strict no” for Sachin Pilot as the new CM, Maken said.

“Their first proposal said that if you want to pass a resolution, then the Congress high command should take a final decision, then pass it after October 19 (counting of votes for party presidential poll).

“We told them that this raises conflict of interest, as if Gehlot is elected as the Congress president then this proposal will empower him further after October 19 and there can be no bigger conflict of interest than this.

“Secondly, when we told them that we wanted to talk to each of them in person, they insisted on talking in groups. We categorically told them that it has been the Congress practice to take feedback from each leader, but they stood their ground on coming in groups besides saying ‘you will have to publicly announce this’.

“Thirdly, they said that the CM should be picked from the 102 MLAs who were loyal during the rebellion, and not from the Pilot group,” Maken said.
