India wins global praise at UNGA

Another high-level delegate to praise India was Jamaica Foreign Minister Kamina J Smith, who expressed gratitude towards India for its assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic…reports Asian Lite News

At the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session India has been winning praise from several developing and developed nations both for its economic and foreign policy.

Some of the most powerful voices, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and French President Emmanuel Macron have referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s India in a positive light. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also acknowledged the key role India can play in the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Countries like France, Jamaica and Portugal also heaped praise on India.

“It is not for revenge against the West or for opposing the West against the east. It is the time for a collective time for our sovereign equal states. To cope together with challenges, we face,” Macron said while referring to the conversation between PM Modi and Putin during the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Samarkand.

UN chief Guterres, in his message to a special ‘India@75’ event on showcasing the ‘India-UN Partnership in Action’, underlined that as home to the largest youth generation in history, India will be decisive in the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov “explicitly’ backed India for a permanent seat, straight 60 minutes after he met up with his Indian counterpart. Addressing the UNGA session, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov said that the country sees India as a “key international actor” and a “worthy candidate for permanent membership within the Council.”

Another high-level delegate to praise India was Jamaica Foreign Minister Kamina J Smith, who expressed gratitude towards India for its assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guyana Foreign Minister Hugh Hilton Todd also hailed India in UNGA. “Small countries like Guyana would have benefitted immensely from India’s growth trajectory as it has always been an economy that focuses on human development, putting humans ahead of any other form of development,” he said.

    UNGA concludes general debate

This year’s general debate of the UN General Assembly concluded, after representatives of 190 member states spoke around the theme of “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”.

Csaba Korosi, President of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, said on Monday in his closing remarks that 126 heads of state and government took part in this year’s general debate.

“The sheer number of you who took part in this debate points to the importance that the general debate holds in international affairs,” Korosi added.

He said he got five messages from the member states during the general debate.

The first is the growing awareness that humanity has entered a new era, he added.

“Facing complex challenges and multi-layer crises, we reached a time of paradigm shift, because the movements, the adjustments that we see around us cannot be called mere modifications any longer: they are significant transformations in the making,” he said.

The second message is that the conflict in Ukraine should end, said Korosi.

“You also pointed out that its effect is being felt around the world. You described the pain of shortages, inflation, the impact of refugees as far as South America and Africa, concerns about the safety of nuclear plants, and fears of a nuclear attack. You also highlighted the dangers of misinformation and propaganda,” the UNGA President added.

The third message is that climate change is gradually destroying humanity, he said.

“We heard about countries simultaneously experiencing droughts and flooding. We spoke about unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, eating up the fish and filling our waters with plastics, even as waves of rising seas drown shorelines. We heard calls to achieve global net-zero (emissions) and appeals to assist the countries most affected by climate change, not of their own making. We heard clearly the calls for climate justice and honouring commitments,” he said.

Fourth, calls for improving the state of human rights and meeting the needs of those most vulnerable to exploitation were heard, Korosi added.

The fifth key issue, for which there is strong support, is the need to modernise the United Nations, revitalise the General Assembly and reform the Security Council, he said.

Korosi called for collective action to tackle the challenges.

“We are all in agreement on the main challenges. We want a peaceful post-Covid world with increased trust, where we can work together to mitigate and adapt to climate change,” he added.

Korosi said he plans to launch a series of consultations with many actors, including the scientific community, after the conclusion of the general debate, with the aim to strengthen universally accepted and owned foundation for action.

The general debate is an annual gathering of heads of state and government as well as other high-level representatives of UN member states at the beginning of the new session of the General Assembly.

India’s Arjun Maini narrowly misses podium in Red Bull Ring

Mainin pitted at the very end of the Pit Window to take a Chance on the Drying conditions and went out on Slick tires with 15 minutes left to go…reports Asian Lite News

Despite inclement weather at the Red Bull Ring, India’s Arjun Maini showed an impressive race pace with his #36 Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the colours of team-partner PAUL in the first race to finish in 13th position in the field of 27 cars in the German.

Maini had qualified 7th but had to start 10th due to a penalty from the previous race. He clearly showed tremendous Pace during the entire race as it is extremely difficult to overtake at the Red Bull ring.

The race on Sunday, which was completely wet, went much better and ultimately Maii was able to bring the car across the finish line in 4th after an extremely exciting race on a wet track that was drying towards the end of the race. Arjun Maini again showed his driving quality in the Wet and rewarded himself with 12 valuable championship points for the drivers”and team standings.

Maini pitted at the very end of the Pit Window to take a Chance on the Drying conditions and went out on Slick tires with 15 minutes left to go. While he came out in P3, he fell back to P12 as the tyres were taking time to get heat into them. Towards the last few laps, he was able to recover several positions to make it to his best result this year in DTM. With all the known Brands in 27 cars, DTM is the most Competitive GT3 race driven by Single drivers across Europe.

Arjun Maini, #36 Mercedes-AMG GT3: “I’m very happy with my race on Sunday. I was finally able to get a result with my pace. I like the Red Bull Ring – and now even a little bit more. It was very challenging today – but it was also a lot of fun to drive in these conditions. I want to thank my team and Omega Seiki Mobility for making this happen.”

The last weekend of the DTM championship will be held at Hockenheimring between October 7 and 9 and will be shown in India Live on Eurosports.

Labour surge to biggest lead over Tories since 2001

The Labour leader will tell party delegates in Liverpool that Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan will create a million new jobs in towns and cities across the country, as well as bring down energy bills and raise living standards…reports Asian Lite News

Sir Keir Starmer will claim a “changed” Labour can turn the UK into a “growth superpower” in his keynote conference speech – as a new poll gave the party its largest lead over the Conservatives in more than two decades.

The Labour leader will tell party delegates in Liverpool on Tuesday that Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan will create a million new jobs in towns and cities across the country, as well as bring down energy bills and raise living standards.

He will declare that under his leadership, Labour is now “the party of the centre-ground” and ready to form the next government after 12 years of the Conservatives in power.

Making his leader’s speech at the party’s annual conference, Sir Keir will pledge to “fight the Tories on economic growth” through “ambitious” and “practical” plans for jobs, skills and tackling the climate crisis.

It comes as a new poll by YouGov on Monday night revealed the party has surged to its largest lead over the Conservatives since Tony Blair’s landslide victory in 2001 – putting Labour 17 points clear of Liz Truss’s party.

The survey also reveals widespread public opposition to Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s tax-cutting mini-budget, with the decision to scrap the 45% rate of tax for those earning more than £150,000 opposed by 72% of voters – including 69% of those who backed the Conservatives in 2019.

‘Time for Britain to stand tall again’

The promising poll for Labour comes as Sir Keir prepares to commit to kicking off his ambition for growth within the first 100 days of becoming PM.

“We will require a different way of working – the biggest partnership between government, business, and communities this country has ever seen,” Sir Keir will say.

Sir Keir will contrast Labour’s plan for growth with the Conservative Party’s “shambolic” mini-budget.

The Labour leader will say his party is the party of “sound money” and will double-down on his pledge to introduce an Office for Value for Money to ensure taxpayers’ money is spent in the national interest.

“What we’ve seen from the government in the past few days has no precedent. They’ve lost control of the British economy – and for what? For tax cuts for the richest one per cent in our society,” Sir Keir will say.

He will add that it is “time for Britain to stand tall again”.

It is not known how long Sir Keir’s keynote speech is likely to last, but last year he spoke for around 90 minutes.

It is expected he will celebrate the changes his party has made to become more centre-ground since the tenure of Jeremy Corbyn – exemplified by the singing of the national anthem at the start of conference.

During his address, Sir Keir will say his party is the “political wing of the British people” – a direct reference to former Labour PM Blair.

On the second day of Labour’s conference, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said the government is putting the economy in danger and attacked Truss’s plan of “trickle-down economics” after the pound sank to a record low against the dollar.

It came as a new YouGov poll found a total of 72% of voters do not have confidence in the prime minister’s plans to tackle the rising cost of living.

Reeves promised a new deal for working people, with strengthened rights, saying the “minimum wage will be set at a level that reflects the real cost of living”.

She added that Labour would prioritise doubling the number of medical school places and district nurses, as well as create 10,000 more nursing and midwife places every year.

Labour’s conference will conclude on Wednesday, with the Conservative Party holding its event in Birmingham next week.

  • Russia backs India for permanent seat on UNSC

Russia backs India for permanent seat on UNSC

India is the only country to have the endorsement of all three Western permanent members and Russia – which amounts to the backing of all the permanent members except China…reports Arul Louis

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has endorsed India for a permanent seat on the Security Council calling it a key international actor.

“The Council and UN have to be aligned to contemporary realities,” he said on Saturday at the high-level meeting of the General Assembly.

“We see the prospect of making the Security Council more democratic exclusively, through broadening the representation of the countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America,” he said.

“We know to add India and Brazil, in particular, as key international actors and worthy candidates for permanent membership within the council,” he added.

While Russia has indicated willingness to back India’s candidacy, this is the first time that it has done so categorically in public.

India is the only country to have the endorsement of all three Western permanent members and Russia – which amounts to the backing of all the permanent members except China.

Brazil does not have the backing of the US, while Germany and Japan, the other front-runners for permanent seats, don’t have Russia’s.

Lavrov criticised the US Indo-Pacific strategy as an attempt to “subjugate” Asian countries and to undermine ASEAN.

India figures in the Indo-Pacific strategy as a member of the Quad, the four-nation group that also includes Japan and Australia.

“Under the slogan of Indo-Pacific strategies, closed formats are being created and they undermine what has been built on the ASEAN for decades,” he said.

NATO has now declared as “indivisible” the security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, he said (although the interpretation said India and Pacific).

The US was trying to make the whole world “its backyard”, he asserted, and the West “is introducing dividing lines everywhere along the lines of a confrontation between blocs: You’re either with us or against us,” he said

“There is no third option possible, there are no compromises,” he added.

He reiterated President Vladimir Putin’s uncompromising hardline position against Ukraine.

Lavrov blamed the West and Ukraine for the invasion, starting with what he called the “Maidan coup” — the protests at that venue in Kyiv that brought down the elected government of Viktor Yanukovych in 2013.

He said the rights of the Russian-speaking minority were restricted in Ukraine and, egged on by the West, President Volodymyr Zelensky began the confrontation to which his country responded with what he euphemistically called “special operations”.

He said that Russia had compromised at the dissolution of the Soviet Union when the constituent republics were free to leave and allowed the reunification of Germany.

After it dissolved the Warsaw Pact, the Soviet bloc’s equivalent of NATO, he asserted that there was no need for the Western military alliance, much less for it to encircle his country, he added.

He also referred to the interventions by the US in other countries and said, “Name, a country where Washington interfered by force and as a result of that life improved (there)”.

Lavrov spoke shortly before India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who appeared to distance New Delhi from Moscow over the invasion saying that India was on “the side that respects the UN Charter and its founding principles”.

No let-up in Pakistan’s dengue woes

In the last 24 hours 419 new cases were reported across Sindh, with the majority registered in the provincial capital of Karachi, (343)…reports Asian Lite News

The spread of dengue continues unabated in Pakistan amid an ongoing outbreak blamed largely on deadly floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains since mid-June.

In the last 24 hours 419 new cases were reported across Sindh, with the majority registered in the provincial capital of Karachi, (343), Xinhua news agency quoted the local health department as saying.

The new cases have increased this year’s overall caseload in Sindh to 7,951.

Meanwhile in Punjab province, there were 385 new cases, with 186 of them logged in Lahore and 100 in Rawalpindi.

The total number of dengue cases in Punjab this year has now gone up to 4,921.

Also in the same period, 213 more people were diagnosed with the disease in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, taking the total to 6,625.

Islamabad reported 68 new cases, increasing the overall to 1,991 this year.

The government has launched an anti-dengue campaign including raising public awareness in response to the alarmingly high number of cases in the country, and has taken special measures at hotspots in order to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

Dengue mosquitos breed in stagnant water like water-filled containers.

In severe cases, dengue can cause joint pain, nausea, vomiting, rashes, breathing problems, haemorrhaging and organ failure.

Home Ministry all set to ban PFI

According to sources, the MHA is also taking legal advice before banning PFI, so that when the party concerned in this matter approaches court, the government remains ready with its move, reports Sanket Pathak…reports Asian Lite News

Days after the NIA and the ED raided several locations linked to the Popular Front of India (PFI) across the country, the Union Home Ministry is planning to ban the extremist group on the basis of the evidences gathered by the investigating agencies, sources said.

However, before imposing the ban, the officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) want to make full preparations, so that if the ban is challenged, then their side is not weakened.

In the raids conducted in 15 states of the country on September 22, the investigating agencies have found strong evidence of PFI’s involvement in terrorist activities, based on which, it can soon be banned.

Soon after the raid, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also held a meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the NIA Chief. In this, instructions have been issued to review the facts gathered against PFI and take further action.

According to sources, the MHA is also taking legal advice before banning PFI, so that when the party concerned in this matter approaches court, the government remains ready with its move. This is also being done because the central government had to withdraw the ban on SIMI in 2008. However, later it was again banned after the Supreme Court order.

This time, the government donesn’t seem to be in a hurry and leave any stone unturned. And that’s why, it is making its case strong, besides weighing all the legal asepcts before imposing ban on PFI.

According to the information, different agencies were engaged in gathering strong evidence against PFI for many years as instructions were given by the MHA that no link of PFI should be left out. While the NIA’s investigation was focussed on the illegal activities of the criminal organisation, the ED has now been completely successful in tracing the source of their finances.

Barelvi Muslims call for ban on PFI

Meanwhile, the Barelvi Ulema has called for a ban on PFI for its alleged terror-related activities which prompted nationwide raids by NIA, ED and state police at premises linked to its leaders. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, the president of All India Muslim Jamaat, issued a recorded statement in which he stressed that the raids have made it clear that the Islamist fundamentalist organization has been “involved in communal riots in various states across the country.”

“That’s why, I urge all Sunni, Sufi, and Barelvi Muslims to not keep any relation with this organisation,” he said.

The Barelvi sect from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly demanded the central government to impose an immediate ban on such organizations to protect the unity and integrity of the country. Maulana Barelvi also supported the action taken by the government to tighten the noose around terror activities across India.

“It is important to ban such organisations,” he said, adding that the actions taken by the government of India have his “full support.”

    Muslim organisations appeal to youth

Meanwhile, the arrests of PFI leaders from across the country drew mixed reactions from several Muslim organisations, with many appealing to the youth from the community to remain patient on the action taken by the law enforcement agencies.

All India Tanjim Ulema-e-Islam, Kul Hind Markazi Imam Council and Muslim Students Organisation of India (MSO) have said in their statement that if the action has been taken to comply with the law and prevent terrorism, then everyone should be patient on it.

The organisations said the charges of murder, violence and possession of weapons against the arrested people are serious. However, these allegations have to be proved in court.

Keeping allegations of brainwashing the youth with Salafi Wahhabi ideology against PFI, they said Muslims should help the country in its pursuit of stability and peace.

The organisations added the PFI and organisations of Salafi Wahhabi ideology are basically brainwashing the youth which is not in the favour of Islam, the country and humanity.

These organisations said that they have faith in the judicial system, law and Constitution of the country, according to a tweet in Hindi by the MSO, an apex students and youths’ body of Muslims working on the promotion of Sufism and inclusive India. It is to be noted that All India Tanjim Ulema-e-Islam and MSO met the then home minister Rajnath Singh in 2018 and first demanded a ban on PFI.

Forest and other law enforcing agencies took action against many people for “violating” the Wildlife Protection Act and and many people were sentenced to imprisonment, he said…reports Asian Lite News

Environment and animal rights activists on Sunday alleged that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state Tourism Minister Jayanata Malla Baruah, and spiritual guru Jaggi Vasudev aka Sadhguru violated the Wildlife (Protection) Act by driving a safari vehicle inside the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve beyond the scheduled time.

Activists Soneswar Narah and Prabin Pegu lodged a police complaint at the Bokakhat police station in Golaghat district against the Chief Minister, spiritual guru, and the Tourism Minister, demanding action against them under the act.

“Villagers around the Kaziranga have sacrificed a lot to protect the world-famous park. Wild tigers, elephants and other animals killed many domestic animals of the people living alongside the park,” Narah told the media.

Forest and other law enforcing agencies took action against many people for “violating” the Wildlife Protection Act and and many people were sentenced to imprisonment, he said.

The activist said that if the law is equal for everyone, then action must be taken against the Chief Minister, Sadhguru, and Tourism Minister for conducting the vehicle safari inside the national park much beyond the scheduled time.

A fleet of vehicles carrying Sarma, Sadhguru, and the minister covered around two km inside Kaziranga after the inauguration of a rhino memorial about two hours much behind the scheduled time on Saturday.

Sadhguru was driving one of the safari vehicles with the Chief Minister in the passenger seat while the Minister sat in the back along with officials and guards.

Environment and wild animal expert Rohit Choudhury said that vehicle safari after sunset in Kaziranga is a violation of Section 27 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, which restricts the entry in a wildlife sanctuary of anyone other than a public servant on duty.

Another environment and animal rights activist Apurba Ballave Goswami said that it is most unfortunate that an important person like Sadhguru, “whom we expect to practice what we preach, has no sensitivity towards animals”.

Goswami said that it is known that wild animals in their protected homes and forest feel disturbed by lights, sounds and noises of vehicles at night.

The Chief Minister, Sadhguru and Tourism Minister formally re-opened Kaziranga for tourists for the forthcoming season on Saturday.

Elephant safari and jeep safari in the park, India’s seventh Unesco world heritage site, remains closed during the monsoon and reopens in October but this year, the park opend early to attract the tourists who could not visit there during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chief Minister and Sadhguru also unveiled three statues of rhinoceros at the Mihimukh area of the park. The statues were crafted using the ashes from burning seized rhino horns on September 22 last year.

Assam had created history when a stockpile of 2,479 rhino horns was burnt at a public function to send a strong message to poachers.

Kaziranga, which is spread across five districts of Assam — Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath and Karbi Anglong, is not just a home of at least 2,613 one-horned rhinos, but also to Royal Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, wild buffalos and many more animal species while it is also habitat to thousands of birds of over 125 species.
