UN education fund gets $42 million to address global learning crisis

The new funding catalyses much-needed support to address a global learning crisis where over 78 million crisis-impacted girls and boys are out of school…reports Asian Lite News

Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the UN global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, has received $42 million in new funding from the LEGO Foundation, Germany and the US, said the fund.

The donors announced their decision during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, with the LEGO Foundation offering $25 million, Germany 10 million euros ($9.7 million), and the US $7 million, Xinhua news agency reported.

The new funding catalyses much-needed support to address a global learning crisis where over 78 million crisis-impacted girls and boys are out of school, and nearly two-thirds of 10-year-olds are unable to read a simple text, said the ECW.

“Education is our investment in human beings and the human potential. So far we have only seen a glimpse of it. There are 222 million children out there that will allow us to see the full potential of humanity,” said ECW Director Yasmine Sherif.

“We must unite to fully fund Education Cannot Wait and our strategic partners in mobilising $1.5 billion over the next four years,” the Director added.

Since its inception in 2016, the ECW and its strategic partners have mobilised more than $1.1 billion and directly supported nearly 7 million children and adolescents, according to the fund.

  • Pakistan to probe audio leak

    Pakistan to probe audio leak

This breach has occurred despite the fact that there is a practice of daily search to check if there is any bugging device installed in the Prime Minister’s Office or in his residential compound…reports Asian Lite News

Pakistans Intelligence Bureau (IB) has been ordered to investigate the purported bugging of the Prime Ministers House after several audio leaks went viral on social media amid reports that a hacker put on sale on the dark web a massive data of recorded conversations not only of incumbent premier Shehbaz Sharif but also of his predecessor, Imran Khan.

This extraordinary breach has set alarm bells ringing as the audio leaks are not only of telephonic conversations, The News reported.

The first such leak, which was uploaded on social media, was a discussion between Sharif and his Principal Secretary (PS) Tauqeer Shah in which the latter was heard saying that Maryam Nawaz had asked him to facilitate her son-in-law, Raheel Munir, with the import of machinery for a power plant from India.

The News has learnt that discussion between the two on this matter took place face-to-face, meaning thereby there were some bugging devices installed in the PM House.

Shah, in the leaked audio, has been heard saying that the facilitation in import would generate a controversy and the Prime Minister, agreeing with him, directed his PS to convey the same to Maryam and that he would also speak with her on this.

In addition, Maryam wanted a grid station installed in a housing society owned by Raheel. On this, Sharif is heard saying this should be dealt with in a “national way”, says The News report.

This breach has occurred despite the fact that there is a practice of daily search to check if there is any bugging device installed in the Prime Minister’s Office or in his residential compound, a source told The News.

This search is in line with Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the IB, which is the main agency assigned the security of the Prime Ministe, his office and house.

Recalling a past incident, the source told The News that the security went on a high alert when Nawaz Sharif was the Prime Minister.

As the proceeding in Supreme Court on the Panama Papers case was going on, a spy drone would hover over the residential compound of the Prime Ministe and later at the IB Headquarters, which is located in the adjacent building.

The agency investigated the matter and conveyed to the concerned that the drone would be shot down if sent again, The News reported.

The issue of spying also surfaced in 2010 and was reported by Ansar Abbasi. Almost whole of the federal government, its all the top offices and sensitive installations, including the Presidency, Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Federal Secretariat offices even including the Interior Ministry in Islamabad’s Red-Zone were purportedly being bugged by certain foreign missions and their operators.

A top government official dealing with internal security, revealed that modern bugging technology that uses rays to listen what is discussed in a closed-door meeting even at a distance of half a kilometre, was being used by certain foreign missions and operators to spy on almost all the government top offices surrounding the presidency, according to Ansar Abbasi’s report.

In December 2009, he reported about an unidentified foreign hand having been involved in making efforts to bug the proceedings of a federal cabinet meeting by installing the latest equipment at a certain distance from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat that was detected.

A special cabinet meeting was scheduled to be held with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the chair on September 9, 2009, which was delayed for two hours due to non-clearance given by security agencies to the room in which the meeting was scheduled to be held on that day.

Security agencies, the sources said, detected some mysterious waves that resulted in a delay in starting the cabinet meeting by two hours, adding that the meeting started only after the room was cleared security-wise, Ansar Abbasi’s report said, The News reported.

Even at that time, the security agencies of the country discovered that certain waves were detected from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, clearly indicating that something was being installed directed towards the PM Secretariat from the Diplomatic Enclave to record the conversation from a certain distance.

Another leaked clip making rounds on social media is related to Maryam’s complaining to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif against Finance Minister Miftah Ismail and the way he is running the official business as sky-rocketing inflation has hurt badly the poor segments of society.

In one clip, the niece and uncle are discussing deteriorating health conditions of Pervez Musharraf and that the government should not stop him from coming to Pakistan if there is any such move.

In yet another clip, there is a deliberation over the acceptance of PTI MNAs’ resignation and seeking advice from Nawaz Sharif on this issue, The News reported.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said that other states in the country were keen on learning the policies and programmes of the Dravidian model of development.

He was speaking at the Third International Humanism Conference on Social Justice virtually on Sunday.

Stalin said that in the past 50 years, Tamil Nadu has witnessed huge development and this has led to other states in the country keenly learning on the policies and programmes and implementing this in their own states.

He said that the Dravidian model was only for further enhancing the developments made in the last 50 years. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that the state witnessed huge development due to two language policies, infrastructure, development of the Tamil language, reservation rights, creation of social upliftment, and struggle for state’s rights during the past 50 years.

Stalin said that the DMK was a political party based on the ideals of social justice, equality, self-respect, communal rights, linguistic affinity, and state autonomy and added that the development of the state should be based on these ideals.

He said that the development should include both economic and social development and said that the Dravidian ideologue, Thanthai Periyar, Perarignar Anna, and his father Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar had envisioned this model of development.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also said that the ideals and thought process of late Thanthai Periyar are now being used in the modern world.

The meeting came soon after several opposition leaders had come together to pay tribute to former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal in Haryana…reports Asian Lite News

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad on Sunday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi to discuss matters pertaining to opposition unity.

The two leaders briefed the Congress chief about the initiatives taken to unite the opposition parties against the BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

After the meeting, Nitish Kumar, who had met Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Arvind Kejriwal, and Sitaram Yechury on his previous Delhi visit, said: “Talks are on with all like-minded parties and since Congress is into organisational elections, we will take a view on it.”

Lalu Prasad said: “The prime agenda is to remove BJP as it has been done in Bihar.”

The meeting came soon after several opposition leaders had come together to pay tribute to former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal in Haryana.

At the event in Haryana’s Fatehabad, Nitish Kumar gave a call for a “main front”, comprising the Congress, to oust the BJP in 2024 parliamentary polls.

NCP’s Sharad Pawar, Nitish Kumar and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal, among several Opposition leaders, shared the dais at the rally organised by the Indian National Lok Dal, and gave a united call to out the BJP government in the Centre.

RJD leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and CPI-M’s Yechury also attended the rally to mark the birth anniversary of the INLD founder Devi Lal.

However, the rally organiser INLD and its ally SAD do not share cordial relations with the Congress.

Nitish Kumar, who reiterated that he is not a Prime Minister candidate, said: “There is no question of a third front now and what is needed is the main front of opposition to ensure that BJP loses badly. I will urge all parties including the Congress to come together. My only wish is that we all need to come together at the national level. We need to bring together more parties.”

Tejashwi Yadav said Kumar’s “fearless” decision to part ways with the BJP would prove to be the last nail in the party’s coffin.

“Nitish Kumar had no vested interests, but his only ambition was to uproot the communal forces,” he said.

Sukhbir Badal joined the call for like-minded parties to form a united front.

He said his party, along with the Shiv Sena and the JD-U, “are the real NDA as they had founded the alliance”.

  • Iranian women have the right to choose their dress

Iranian women have the right to choose their dress

A young Iranian woman died simply because she refused to accept the dress code commanded of her by clerics, writes Prof. Madhav Nalapat

Mysterious are the ways of the human heart. If the Iranian Moral Police are to be believed, a 22-year-old woman with a normal heart suddenly died of a heart attack. There was no independent post mortem done on Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian who had spent her entire life in a country controlled by clerics who have abandoned the spiritual for the temporal. Since the 1980s, the clerical aristocracy in Iran see more value—,or in their words virtue—in influencing state policy rather than in the study and contemplation of the theology they claim to be the champions of.

Mahsa had been detained and taken to a “Moral Police Station’’, an abomination that is incongruous in a country with a civilisation that can compete with those of the Greeks and the Romans, not to mention Indic and Sinic traditions in antiquity. “Moral Police” worldwide believe virtue to be only as deep as cloth that, once it cloaks the body and much of the face, doubles as a certificate of morality. Mahsa’s offence was that she had been seen without the abaya, a dress dating back nearly two millennia.

Judging by the treatment meted out to women who show a lack of regard for a dress that is not among the five pillars of the Islamic faith, it is clear that the justification that Iran’s Moral Police rely on to enforce the wearing of the abaya is not from that faith but from pre-Islamic customs. Soon after Mahsa’s death in custody of a “heart attack”, social media posts emerged showing the barbaric treatment meted out to women who had for a time dispensed with the abaya (for in Iran, the clerical overlords believe as does the Taliban that not wearing just the hijab but a full abaya is the definitive proof of a woman’s high moral standards). Judging by such an edict, men are so uncontrollable in their impulses that the mere sight of a partly uncovered woman leads them to horrible acts of violence against the lady in question.

According to this belief, Bondi Beach and similar other seashore getaways must experience an epidemic of assaults against women, something that the media appear to be covering up. The clerics believe that Iran would fall apart, were women to go about wearing an abaya in the way Mahsa sought to do. According to the version of the death proffered by the Iranian police, the Moral Police were so gentle in their behaviour to Mahsa that there was no “physical encounter” between them and her. They apparently believe that beating a prisoner with a stick would not constitute “physical” contact. So civilised are the Moral Police that they never beat up a prisoner with their bare hands, but only with “moral” implements such as a stick or a whip.

Iran will restrict Internet access in country until calm is restored to streets

The Moral Police imply that Mahsa Amini was given the comforts of a 5-star hotel while in their company. What is implied is that the luxurious treatment given to Mahsa so overwhelmed the young woman that in ecstasy, her heart stopped beating, killing her. Grand Ayatollah Khamenei has been known to speak out whenever the police in the US commit an atrocity, as took place during the murder of George Floyd by a policeman two years ago. Given his sensitive soul, the fact that Ayatollah Khamenei has not this far publicly commented on Mahsa Amini’s death indicates that the Supreme Leader of Iran is convinced that Mahsa died not as a consequence of police brutality but of natural causes brought out by the sheer joy experienced by a woman who falls into the custody of the Iranian Moral Police.

Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Raisi announced a police probe into the death at the hands of the police, in a bid to damp down public anger at the manner in which a young woman was killed by philistines in a country once famed for its culture.

A young Iranian woman died simply because she refused to accept the patriarchal commands of clerics who in their behaviour showed none of the compassion, mercy and benevolence that are repeatedly enjoined in the Quran as divine virtues. The murder of an innocent by the country’s Dark Ages police force motivated several young women in Iran to come out into the streets. They came without wearing according to clerical codes the full-length tunic that was in vogue among women in the sandstorm-prone Arabian desert nearly two thousand years ago.

Stony faces and vile behaviour seem to be essential requisites for getting admitted into the ranks of the Moral Police in those countries that have such elements in their gendarmerie. The forgiving attitude of Ayatollah Khamenei towards the Moral Police indicates that the Supreme Leader of Iran trusts wholeheartedly in the correctness of the actions of the Moral Police. Perhaps the Supreme Leader has adopted an “If you don’t ask, you don’t need to know” attitude to the way in which elements of the Iranian police have adopted the Standard Operating Procedure of the worst elements of Savak, the brutal force that terrorised people in Iran before the Shah was deposed in 1979?

Women burn headscarves as anti-hijab protests continue in Iran(twitter)

Aware of the anger in the streets caused by the murder at the hands of the Moral Police of Mahsa Amini, President Raisi has ordered an inquiry into her death. An inquiry by the police, for the police, that is on track to find out that the young lady had a rare heart condition that was suddenly and triggered by the limitless hospitality of her jailors, sorry, her educators. For the story given out is that Mahsa was forcibly brought into a police station in order to be educated in how to be a virtuous woman. Or rather, to dress in a manner that would be sufficient to deem her a virtuous woman in public, no matter what her behaviour in private was.

When an educational institution in Karnataka banned the use of the hijab (headscarf) in its precincts some time ago, this columnist was of the view that a headscarf worn voluntarily (whether black or saffron) was not sufficient grounds for a ban, although wearing an abaya would be. The operative word is “voluntarily”. Young women who get coerced into wearing the headscarf (hijab) or even the abaya is a different matter.

Wearing a uniform is all that is needed in an educational institution. To equate an additional item of clothing with piety or with virtue is fantasy. To remain healthy, society must deny freedom to elements that seek to coerce others in the way that Iran’s Moral Police do. Their actions are an infringement of rights, and should be opposed, as they are being after the murder of a hijab-less 22-year-old. The people of Iran want their lives back from the grip of a clergy still frozen in extreme patriarchy. Mahsa Amini is a martyr in the battle of the women of Iran to ensure that freedom and not coercion prevail in their ancient land. She will not be forgotten.
