‘Looking for peace with neighbours’: Shehbaz rakes up Kashmir at UN

Pakistan Prime Minister said time to take up 21st century challenges, but goes back 75 years to old disputes, reports Arul Louis

With his country reeling from floods of “biblical” proportions, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that it is “high time we took a pause from the preoccupations of the 20th century to return to the challenges of the 21st,” but immediately turned the clock back 75 years railing against India.

At the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly, he detailed the devastation from the floods and the momentous task of rebuilding, but then he veered off to catalogue the oft-repeated various grievances against India over Kashmir and what he said was the treatment of Muslims.

“The entire definition of national security has changed today, and unless the leaders of the world come together to act now behind minimum agreed agenda, there will be no earth to fight wars over. Nature will be fighting back, and for that humanity is no match,” the Prime Minister added.

He offered “to sit down then and talk to our Indian counterparts to pave the way forward for future so that our generations do not suffer, so that we spend our resources on mitigating miseries on building structures to face these floods and outburst of clouds” — but only after India gives in to his demands on Kashmir.

“Pakistan’s urgent priority right now is to ensure rapid economic growth and lift millions out of destitution and hunger,” Sharif said.

“To enable any such policy momentum, Pakistan needs a stable external environment. We look for peace with all our neighbours, including India,” he added.

But he said, “Sustainable peace and stability in South Asia, however, remains contingent upon a just and lasting solution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. At the heart of this long-standing dispute lies the denial of the inalienable right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination.”

While Sharif added that the Kashmir dispute should be settled on the basis of Security Council resolutions, he ignored the Security Council Resolution 47 adopted on April 21, 1948, that requires Pakistan to remove its troops and nationals from there and not to assist those fighting there or allow in fighters.

He said, “I assure the world from this august platform, that we in Pakistan remain consistent in our commitment to peace in South Asia. India must take credible steps to create enabling environment for constructive engagement.”

He added that India and Pakistan, which are “armed to the teeth,” should be able to disarm if they peacefully resolve differences, he ignored the fact of India having to defend against an aggressive China.

On a major international issue involving his country, Sharif said, “Pakistan strongly condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

That was despite his country openly protecting terrorists, including at least one already on the list of terrorists sanctioned by the UN.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif meets US President Joe Biden and his wife at the reception hosted by the US President for the world leaders participating in 77th session of UNGA.

He claimed that his country was the victim of terrorism promoted by “an adversary,” but went on to list terrorist groups that he said were operating from Afghanistan.

One of those he listed was al-Qaeda, whose leader Osama bin Laden had, in fact, been found living in Pakistan.

Sharif called for reforming the Security Council but opposed adding permanent members, saying it would “create new centres of privilege in violation of the principle of sovereign equality of member states,” although by that token so does the present system of having five permanent members.

    Tribal girls puncture stereotypes

Six months ago, Gayatri Kasde of Sawali Kheda was trained as a mechanic under Babubhai, a mechanic in Khalwa town. Now she works from both Babubhai’s garage and her home…reports Mohammad Asif Siddiqui

Tribal girls in Khalwa block of Khandwa district are breaking the glass ceiling that once tied them down to farm work to earn a pittance.

Mantu Kasde of Balrampur works on the shock absorber and clutch plates of motorcycles at a garage in Khalwa, after having completed a three-month course in repairing. “I shall open my own garage soon,” she beams with pride.

Sativardha of Jamdhad has launched a puncture repair service, a beauty parlour and a cutlery shop just outside her home. She completed training for these jobs almost six months ago, after her higher secondary education, to make around Rs 5,000 every month.

Her seven-member family used to migrate every year in search of work. Thanks to her enterprise, the family makes enough money now to give up the idea of migration altogether. “My father does not need to move out for work anymore.”

Six months ago, Gayatri Kasde of Sawali Kheda was trained as a mechanic under Babubhai, a mechanic in Khalwa town. Now she works from both Babubhai’s garage and her home.

Radha Yadav of Bagda repairs motorcycles, besides running a grocery shop. She has managed to save Rs 15,000 over the last six months. Her brother, who was earlier working at a factory in Khandwa, has returned home to help run her business.

Sakiya Vardhaya belongs to a landless family from Jamdhad, comprising her parents, three sisters and two brothers, which migrated annually for work. She now repairs two-wheelers, assisted by her two sisters. The money she earns not only helps run the family but also takes care of her studies. Sakiya, a BA final year student, commutes daily to her college in Khandwa.

Most of these girls fall in the 18-24 age group and belong to the Gond and Korku tribes, which do not practise gender discrimination. So far, 50 girls have received training under the aegis of Spandan Samajsewa Samiti, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

    A unique idea

Hitherto known for the migration of its residents, Khalwa is witnessing a turnaround with young girls entering male-dominated vocations.

Recounting how they embarked on such unique journeys, the girls said that they realised there was little to do in Khalwa other than sowing and harvesting crops. At the same time, the block had a whole lot of two-wheeler and mobile phone users. Whenever something needed repair, the villagers had to travel to the nearest urban centres such as Khalwa, Patajan, Roshni and Ashapur. Some of these places were located over 20 km away, and that too with negligible public transport.

In search of fruitful employment, they approached NGO Spandan, which has been actively involved in stemming migration in Khalwa for many years. Initially, the girls were sent to local mechanics to acquire basic knowledge of repairing. Then came some financial assistance to open small shops adjoining their homes. Further training happened in Khandwa, followed by a five-day workshop in the first week of August to educate them about the finer points of repair.

Incidentally, the families wholeheartedly supported the girls right from the beginning. As Mantu points out: “When Seema didi of Spandan suggested that I take up garage work, I was enthused. I did not see anything wrong in doing the job.”

Other girls chime in saying their families never stopped them. “We enjoy doing this work. It is true that many people doubt our skills, but we feel proud to earn our daily bread through hard work.”

The girls now read brochures and manuals that help them repair motorcycles of any brand available in the market. They are also adept at dealing with all kinds of two-wheeler punctures. As and when the demand arises, they repair mobile phones too. A few others work at beauty parlours, handling foundations and makeup.

According to Seema Prakash Michael of NGO Spandan, when they were looking at ways to stem migration, some girls suggested measures to generate local employment in Khalwa. They said they felt unsafe when family members went to other cities/towns in search of work.

“After several rounds of discussions, we hit upon the idea of mobile and two-wheeler repairs. We were initially apprehensive, but the girls exhibited remarkable skills and enthusiasm. In fact, they surpassed all our expectations,” Michael says.

Opening a tyre to repair a puncture seemed a daunting task to many at the outset, but everything came easy once they mastered the technique. NGO Spandan also provided them with the necessary tools to set up businesses. In the next couple of years, the organisation intends to train 1,000 girls.

Setting up an all-women service centre in Khalwa is another ambitious plan of the NGO. An organisation with its roots in the Korku community has promised land to this effect. Once it is acquired, the centre will launch operations with a woman mechanic and helper. According to Michael, it will also be developed into a training centre in future. Laurels have already come their way with a bike showroom located at the block headquarters of Khalwa recently organising a special camp where the girls could display their talents. Though they subsequently received job offers from the showroom management, the girls declined them. Nevertheless, the showroom owner has decided to offer free training to hone their skills.

  • Kwarteng unveils his growth plan

    Kwarteng unveils his growth plan

Chancellor unveils new growth plan, tackling energy costs to bring down inflation, backing business and helping households…reports Asian Lite News

The Chancellor today unveiled his Growth Plan to release the huge potential in the British economy by tackling high energy costs and inflation and delivering higher productivity and wages.

The plan set the ambitious target for 2.5% trend of growth, securing sustainable funding for public services and improving living standards for everyone.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng, said, “Economic growth isn’t some academic term with no connection to the real world. It means more jobs, higher pay and more money to fund public services, like schools and the NHS. This will not happen overnight but the tax cuts and reforms I’ve announced today – the biggest package in generations – send a clear signal that growth is our priority. Cuts to stamp duty will get the housing market moving and support first-time buyers to put down roots. New Investment Zones will bring business investment and release land for new homes in communities across the country. And we’re accelerating new road, rail and energy projects by removing restrictions that have slowed down progress for too long.”

“We want businesses to invest in the UK, we want the brightest and the best to work here and we want better living standards for everyone.”

Setting out the first steps towards growth, Kwasi Kwarteng revealed a package of major cuts to Stamp Duty Land Tax, with the changes expected to increase additional residential investment, boost spending on household goods and support the hundreds of thousands of jobs in the property industry from removals companies to decorators. The nil rate band will be doubled from £125,000 to £250,000, meaning that 200,000 more people every year will be able to buy a home without paying any Stamp Duty at all.  The standard buyer in England will save £2,5000, meaning a typical family moving into a semi-detached property will save £2,500 on stamp duty and £1,150 on energy bills – and if they have a combined income of £50,000 around an additional £560 on tax. This is around £4,200 in total.

And the Government is going even further to support first time buyers, who will now pay no stamp duty up to £425,000, and increasing the value of the property on which first time buyers can claim relief, from £500,000 to £625,000. This tax cut took effect from midnight today (Friday 23 Sept 2022). The Chancellor also announced that he will further support homebuyers by increasing the disposal of surplus government land to build new homes, increasing supply.

The Chancellor also set out plans to tackle to the biggest drag on growth – the high cost of energy driven by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which has driven up inflation. To tackle this the government’s Energy Price Guarantee will save the typical household £1,000 a year on their energy bill with the Energy Bill Relief Scheme halving the cost of business energy bills, reducing peak inflation by about 5 percentage points.

Also revealed today were major tax reforms to allow businesses to keep more of their own money, encouraging investment, boosting productivity and creating jobs. New measures include cancelling the planned rise in corporation tax, keeping it the lowest in the G20 at 19%, and reversing the 1.25 percentage point rise in National Insurance contributions, a change which will save 920,000 businesses almost £10,000 on average next year. The Chancellor also announced more relief for businesses by making the Annual Investment Allowance £1 million permanently, rather than letting it return to £200,000 in March 2023.  This gives 100% tax relief to businesses on their plant and machinery investments up to the higher £1 million limit.

It was also confirmed that the government is in discussion with 38 local and mayoral combined authority areas in England including Tees Valley, South Yorkshire and West of England to set up Investment Zones in specific sites within their area. Each Investment Zone will offer generous, targeted and time limited tax cuts for businesses and liberalised planning rules to release more land for housing and commercial development. These will be hubs for growth, encouraging investment in new shopping centres, restaurants, apartments and offices, and creating thriving new communities.

Revealing further tax reforms, Kwasi Kwarteng outlined sector specific support for pubs and hospitality, freezing alcohol duty for another year. Reforms to modernise alcohol duties will also be taken forward and the government will publish a consultation on these plans. The new measures backing business come on top of the government’s Energy Bill Relief Scheme for businesses to cap costs per unit, which will protect them from soaring energy costs this winter by providing a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices.

The Chancellor also reiterated the important principle of people keeping more of what they earn, incentivising work and enterprise. He announced a 1p cut to the basic rate of income tax one year earlier than planned. From April 2023, the basic rate of income tax will be cut to 19% and will mean 31 million people will be better off by an average of £170 per year. Due to the combined impact of the reversal of the HSCL and the reduction of the Income Tax Basic Rate, someone working full time on the current National Living Wage will see a tax cut of over £100.

Alongside cutting the basic rate of income tax, the Chancellor also abolished the additional rate of tax, taking effect from April 2023. In its place will be a single higher rate of income tax of 40%. The policy removes the UK’s previous top rate tax, which was higher than countries like Norway, USA and Italy, and is designed to attract the best and the brightest to the UK workforce, helping businesses innovate and grow.

In a further move to grow the economy, the Chancellor announced plans to accelerate new roads, rail and energy infrastructure. In 2021 it took 65 per cent longer to get consent for major infrastructure projects than in 2012. New legislation will cut barriers and restrictions, making it quicker to plan and build new roads, speeding up the deployment of energy infrastructure like offshore wind farms and streamlining environmental assessments and regulations.

To further support businesses, the Chancellor announced new measures to unlock private investment. The Government will change regulations to increase investment by pension funds into UK assets, benefiting savers and boosting economic growth, and incentivising investment into Britain’s science and tech companies.

New measures were also announced to help people on low incomes secure more and better paid work. Universal Credit Claimants who earn less than the equivalent of 15 hours a week at National Living Wage will be required to meet regularly with their Work Coach and take active steps to increase their earnings or face having their benefits reduced. This change is expected to bring an additional 120,000 people into the more intensive work search regime.  Jobseekers over the age of 50 will also be given extra time with jobcentre work coaches, to help them return to the jobs market. Rising economic inactivity in the over 50s is contributing to shortages in the jobs market, driving up inflation and limiting growth. Returning to pre-pandemic activity rates in the over 50s could boost the level of GDP by 0.5-1 percentage points.

The majority of announcements today are UK-wide, however the Scottish Government is expected to receive more than £600 million extra funding over the 2021 Spending Review period as a result of the changes to income tax and Stamp Duty Land Tax and the Welsh Government will receive around £70 million over the same period as a result of the change to Stamp Duty Land Tax. The reversal of the Health and Social Care Levy will save 4.3 million people across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland more than £230 on average next year.  In the coming weeks, the Government will set out further details of plans to speed up digital infrastructure, reform business regulation, increase housing supply, improve our immigration system, make childcare cheaper, improve farming productivity and back our financial services

Blinken ramps up criticism of Russia for war in Ukraine

Blinken, throughout his address, called on every UNSC member to “send a clear message [to Russia] that these reckless nuclear threats must stop immediately.”..writes Reena Bhardwaj

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken ramped up criticism of Russia for its war in Ukraine on Thursday and noted that countries including those maintaining “close ties” with Moscow, have publicly condemned the conflict.

Addressing the UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, Blinken without naming any country, said there were questions and concerns from Russian allies about President Putin’s invasion.

“Even a number of nations that maintain close ties with Moscow have said publicly that they have serious questions and concerns about President Putin’s ongoing invasion,” Secretary Blinken said.

As the meeting began, there were already signs of a charged atmosphere around the council’s famous horseshoe-shaped table. It was the first direct encounter between Secretary Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ukraine’s Dmytro Kuleba, who attended the meeting as his country was the subject of discussion.

Blinken, throughout his address, called on every UNSC member to “send a clear message [to Russia] that these reckless nuclear threats must stop immediately.”

“What is striking is the remarkable unity among member states when it comes to the (Russia-Ukraine) war. Leaders from countries developing and developed, big and small, north and south have spoken in UNGA to end the war,” he said.

“Leaders from various countries spoke about need to end war. Rather than pulling troops back, Russian President Putin decided to escalate tensions by threat of nuclear weapons. He’s adding fuel to fire. We won’t allow Putin to get away with it,” he added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark to Putin last week that this is not the era of war have been welcomed by the United States.

Just before Blinken’s address, a senior administration official told reporters countries including India are speaking out against Russia. “You are seeing increasing signs of countries that did abstain, to include countries like India speaking out in a different way, including directly in front of Putin,” the official added.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the remarks by PM Modi are a “statement of principle on behalf of what he believes is right and just”. He said the remarks are “very much welcomed by the United States and for the Indian leadership, which has longstanding relationships in Moscow, from the very top all the way through the Russian government, to continue to reinforce that message that now is the time for the war to end.”

Leaders from Turkey, China, and India, all of whom have relatively positive relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, have publicly kept their distance over the war recently, a development the White House called “noteworthy.”

John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, said, “I think what you heard in Uzbekistan by both the leaders of China and in India are indicative of the fact that Mr Putin doesn’t have a whole lot of sympathetic ears out there to what he’s been doing in Ukraine.”

Even French President Emmanuel Macron, during his address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, recalled the remarks pointing out the impact of wars on international community. He said, “Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, was right when he said the time is not for war. It is not for revenge against the West….It is the time for a collective time for our sovereign equal states to cope together with challenges we face.” (ANI)

Legal hurdles to block Trump from staging a comeback

Trump’s legal perils have become insurmountable and could snuff out the former US president’s hopes of an election-winning comeback, said expert…reports Ashe O

Former US President Donald Trump’s efforts at making a comeback for the White House seems “derailed” and “snuffed out” with his legal perils becoming insurmountable, media reports said.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has sued him for tax fraud and an appeals court in Atlanta has granted the Department of Justice resumed access to classified documents for FBI to further investigations in what’s feared that documents may come under the purview of the espionage act.

Trump’s legal perils have become insurmountable and could snuff out the former US president’s hopes of an election-winning comeback, according to political analysts and legal experts, says the Guardian.

On Wednesday, Trump and three of his adult children were accused of lying to tax collectors, lenders and insurers in a “staggering” fraud scheme that routinely misstated the value of his properties to enrich themselves. In another case in Atlanta, the court of appeals granted permission to the DOJ to resume accessing the classified documents seized by the FBI at Mar-a-Lago in national security interests, overturning Judge Aileen Cannon’s stay on DOJ until a special master Raymond Dearie reviewed all the files.

    US President Donald Trump.

The special master himself told Trump lawyers to show those files that were declassified by the ex-President.

“You can’t have the cake and it too,” Judge Dearie said when the lawyers resisted saying it might open up the scene for fresh indictment against Trump.

The civil lawsuit, filed by New York’s attorney general, came as the FBI investigates Trump’s holding of sensitive government documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and a special grand jury in Georgia considers whether he and others attempted to influence state election officials after his defeat there by Joe Biden.

The former US president has repeatedly hinted that he intends to run for the White House again in 2024. But the cascade of criminal, civil and congressional investigations could yet derail that bid, the Guardian said. Trump has accused incumbent President Joe Biden of launching a “witch hunt” against him with the democrats.

“He’s done,” said Allan Lichtman, a history professor at American University, in Washington, who has accurately predicted every presidential election since 1984.

“He’s got too many burdens, too much baggage to be able to run again even presuming he escapes jail, he escapes bankruptcy. I’m not sure he’s going to escape jail.”

After a three-year investigation, Letitia James, the New York attorney general, alleged that Trump provided fraudulent statements of his net worth and false asset valuations to obtain and satisfy loans, get insurance benefits and pay lower taxes. Offspring Don Jr, Ivanka and Eric were also named as defendants.

Meanwhile, Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen on Wednesday predicted New York Attorney General Letitia James’s newly announced fraud investigation into former President Trump’s business will culminate in the Trump Organization’s downfall.

“It’s going to put an end to the entire company,” Cohen said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes” on Wednesday evening. “You think that?” Hayes followed up.

    “I believe so,” Cohen responded.

US aircraft carrier arrives in S. Korea as warning for North

The three warships plan to join the combined drills off South Korea’s east coast later this month…reports Asian Lite News

A nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier arrived in South Korea on Friday for its first combined drills after five years, as Washington and Seoul are striving to reinforce deterrence against evolving North Korean military threats.

The USS Ronald Reagan docked at ROK Fleet Command in Busan, 390 km south of Seoul, amid worries about the possibility of the North staging a nuclear test or other provocations, reports Yonhap News Agency.

The arrival of the carrier, a centrepiece of America’s naval might, came after Presidents Yoon Suk-yeol and Joe Biden reaffirmed their commitment to deploy US strategic assets in a “timely and coordinated manner as necessary” during their summit in Seoul in May.

“The deployment of the carrier here is designed to demonstrate the robustness of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, and deter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats,” a Seoul official told Yonhap News Agency on condition of anonymity.

Its carrier strike group consists of three vessels — the Nimitz-class carrier; USS Chancellorsville, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser; and USS Barry, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.

The three warships plan to join the combined drills off South Korea’s east coast later this month.

The nuclear-powered USS Annapolis submarine is also expected to take part.

Commissioned in July 2003, the 97,000-tonne, 333-meter-long Ronald Reagan is America’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier.

Since 2015, the super-carrier has been based in the Japanese city of Yokosuka, which is home to the US 7th Fleet.

It can carry over 5,000 sailors as well as formidable on-board assets, including F/A-18E Super Hornets, and E-2D Hawkeye early warning and control aircraft.

The strike group sails with 33 partners and allies for bilateral or multilateral maritime exercises and operations, according to the US Navy.

In 2021, the carrier was deployed to support the withdrawal of US troops and others from Afghanistan.

Blinken, Wang Yi to discuss Taiwan

Ahead of the meeting with Secretary Antony Blinken, Chinese Foreign Minister said the Taiwan question is growing into the biggest risk in China-US relations, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

The Foreign Ministers of China and the United States are set to meet in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as soaring tensions between the world’s largest economies show signs of easing.

In a sign of smoother ties, Wang said he met in New York with US climate envoy John Kerry despite China’s announcement after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit that it was curbing cooperation on the issue, a key priority for Biden, Agence France-Presse reported.

But Beijing has issued a new warning against Washington’s support for Taiwan.

In a speech before his talks with his US counterpart Antony Blinken, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Wang reiterated anger over US support for Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory.

“The Taiwan question is growing into the biggest risk in China-US relations. Should it be mishandled it is most likely to devastate bilateral ties,” he said at the Asia Society think tank.

“Just as the US will not allow Hawaii to be stripped away, China has the right to uphold the unification of the country,” he said.

He denounced the US decision to “allow” the Taiwan visit by Pelosi, who is second in line to the presidency after the vice president. The Biden administration, while privately concerned about her trip, noted that Congress is a separate branch of government, the AFP reported.

The talks between top diplomats of both countries are expected to lay the groundwork for a first meeting between Biden and President Xi Jinping, likely in Bali in November on the sidelines of G20 Summit.

Recently during his address at the UNGA, President Biden has acknowledged that there are “shifting geopolitical trends” in relation to China, but said that the US does not seek conflict or want another cold war.

He said: “Let me be direct about the competition between the United States and China. As we manage shifting geopolitical trends, the United States will conduct itself as a reasonable leader.”

“We do not seek conflict. We do not seek a Cold War. We do not ask any nation to choose between the United States or any other partner”, he said.

But the US will “be unabashed in promoting our vision of a free, open, secure, and prosperous world,” he added.

With tensions rising between Beijing and Taipei, especially after US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island in August, Biden said, “We seek to uphold peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.”

He reiterated Washington’s commitment to “‘One China’ policy, which has helped prevent conflict for four decades. And we continue to oppose unilateral changes in the status quo by either side”.

He also criticised Beijing’s nuke programme, saying “China is conducting an unprecedented, concerning nuclear buildup without any transparency”.

He said that Washington was engaged in “new, constructive ways to work with partners to advance shared interests” and was “elevating” the Quad – a group of India, the US, Australia and Japan in the Indo-Pacific”.

In a dig at Beijing’s programmes such as the “One Belt, One Road” initiative and others for infrastructure programmes that have led to serious economic problems for countries like Sri Lanka, Biden tried to contrast them with Washington’s.

Earlier in an interview with CBS News, President Biden reiterated that Washington will defend Taiwan in the event of an “unprecedented attack” by China.

Biden was asked “what should Chinese President Xi know about your commitment to Taiwan?”, to which the President replied: “We agree with what we signed onto a long time ago… And that there’s one China policy, and Taiwan makes their own judgments about their independence.

“We are not moving, we’re not encouraging their being independent. We’re not… That’s their decision.”

To the next query if US forces would defend the island, Biden said: “Yes, if in fact there was an unprecedented attack…”

Shortly after Biden made the remarks, the White House said that “our Taiwan policy hasn’t changed”, clearing the notion that the US policy since 1979 to recognise Taiwan as part of China remained unchanged.

Mexico proposes peace panel for Ukraine with Modi

Mexico formally proposed on Thursday the creation of a peace committee with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to find an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said that to bolster the mediation efforts of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, a panel for dialogue and peace in Ukraine should be created with Modi, Pope Francis and other leaders.

“The objective would be very clear, generating new mechanisms for dialogue and creating additional spaces for mediation, which foster trust, reduce tension and open the path towards lasting peace”, Ebrard said at the Security Council’s briefing on impunity in Ukraine.

He presented to the Council the proposal made by Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday at his Independence Day speech.

In that speech, Obrador said that the panel with Modi and Francis “should immediately seek a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and the start of direct talks” with Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.

The Security Council – and the international community – have been unable to find a way to end the invasion given that Russia has a veto in the Security Council.

India has maintained a sort of neutrality on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, abstaining on substantive votes in the Council and in the General Assembly condemning Moscow.

But New Delhi, which has close historic ties with Moscow, has consistently called for an end to the war.

Last week, Modi delivered a stern message in person to Putin against the invasion.

“Today’s era is not an era of war. We have discussed this with you on phone several times, that democracy, diplomacy and dialogue touch the entire world,” Modi told him when they met in Samarkand.

Speaking at the Council after Ebrard, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, reiterated New Delhi’s call to end the conflict and return to dialogue. Pope Francis, on the other hand, has unequivocally condemned Russia
