Earlier today, the palace said that the Queen was under medical supervision at Balmoral after the doctors expressed their concern over her health.
Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch of the UK, died on Thursday, aged 96.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the Royal Family said in a statement.
Earlier today, the palace said that the Queen was under medical supervision at Balmoral after the doctors expressed their concern over her health.
“Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the official statement from Palace said.
The Queen was born on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. She was the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York – who later became King George VI – and Queen Elizabeth.
Buckingham Palace earlier reported that doctors were concerned about the health of Elizabeth II, and recommended that she remain under medical supervision .

The Manchester India Partnership (MIP) has launched a refreshed strategy to strengthen ties between Manchester and India, reports Rahul Laud.
The strategy is guided by the UK India 2030 roadmap and has re-aligned itself with the updated Greater Manchester (GM) Industrial Strategy. Over the next nine years, the strategy document states “the Manchester India Partnership will grow as a soft power centre. Culture with all its subsets will be central to the MIP’s strategy of using soft power to engage with institutional partners, influencers and ambassadors, to raise the profile of the Greater Manchester region in India.
This will build a strong narrative with a multiplier effect, to catalyse several collaborations in sport, music, theatre, dance, arts, films, creative and Digital media. This would lead to a raft of Indian film Festivals, award functions, art exhibitions, music and dance performances. The launch of the South Asia Gallery in the Manchester Museum next year will be a useful anchor to support this idea.”
Cultural diplomacy now sits at heart of the MIP’s strategy for the next eight years, document points out.
Over the years, Manchester has been developed into a soft power centre, which leverages the cultural and people connections to inculcate a spirit of collaboration between GM and India, thereby delivering opportunities for business and mutual prosperity.
Greater Manchester’s Local Industrial Strategy provides the focus for this activity, engaging India in GM’s key areas of strengths that align with India’s growth sectors. These include Digital and Technology, Low Carbon, Advanced Manufacturing and Health Innovation.
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said:
“The Manchester India Partnership has played a key role in developing and expanding connections between our city-region and India over the last few years. This renewed strategy will set out how that relationship can be strengthened in the future, based around our long-term ambitions for trade, investment, and innovation.
“Our city-region is home to more than 55,000 people from the Indian diaspora, and what this strategy also does is acknowledge the importance and the value of those cultural links that enrich and enliven our communities, and how they too can be a source of shared prosperity.”
Shehla Hasan, Executive Director Manchester India Partnership said,
“Over 1,000 businesses in the Northwest exported over £310 million worth of goods to India in 2019 and in the financial year 2021-2022, India became the fastest growing economy in the world. Our aim is for Greater Manchester to be recognised as the strongest UK region as a partner for this sustained growth”.
Shehla elaborated that the strategy focuses on five key pillars that accurately mirrors GM’s priorities for the future:
1. Raising the profile of Greater Manchester in India
2. Accelerating educational, innovation and entrepreneurship links between GM and India
3. Promoting culture, sports and tourism collaborations
4. Enhanced trade and investment
5. Increase in visitor numbers to the city region from India
She explained that,”This is a live document with a flexible time-bound approach depending on external and internal circumstances. This strategy is based on a clear picture of what success would look like.”
To achieve these ambitions MIP will proactively engage partner organisations such as the Department for International Trade, the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry, MIDAS, Marketing Manchester and Visit Britain.
The Manchester India Business Group launched this year by MIP, a networking club to promote the Manchester-India commercial and cultural relationship will also be an important platform for businesses and people from both regions to meet, exchange experiences and listen to informative and influential speakers including senior government officials, politicians, business leaders, editors, and culture curators, Shehla pointed out.
Simon Arora, MIP Chair and CEO B&M Stores said,
“India and the Greater Manchester region are key partners in each other’s future prosperity and sustainability. As we expect the announcement of the UK India Free Trade Agreement around Diwali next month, this is an opportune time to launch MIP’s refreshed strategy and action plan till 2030. We are enthused and excited to work to strengthen this relationship further.”
Jo Ahmed, MIP Deputy Chair and Partner at Deloitte said, “The year 2022 will be a pivotal moment in the UK-India relationship as the prospect of a Free Trade Agreement draws closer. As a priority international market for Greater Manchester with a burgeoning visitor economy and an Indian student economy that has almost tripled between 2018 and 2021, the refreshed Manchester India Partnership strategy will benefit multiple sectors and provide the platform for the next exciting phase of collaboration between Greater Manchester and India.”
Truss spent her first hours after entering Number 10 sacking members of Boris Johnson’s Cabinet and appointing her own, leaning heavily on trusted supporters…reports Asian Lite News
Liz Truss on Tuesday declared that Britain could “ride out the storm” of the cost of living crisis as she prepared to freeze annual energy bills for households at around £2,500.
Speaking from the steps of Number 10 under grey clouds, the new Prime Minister used her first speech to reassure the country that financial help was coming.
She also appointed a Cabinet of loyalists, rejecting calls from senior Tories to choose Rishi Sunak supporters for top roles.
Truss will unveil a package of measures to help with spiralling energy costs as early as Thursday. Household energy bills are set to be frozen this winter and next, and businesses are also expected to receive support, although details are still being finalised.
The vast intervention will be funded with borrowing, and the total cost could be more than £150 billion.
Speaking after a visit to Balmoral, where she was formally appointed Prime Minister by the Queen, Truss said: “We shouldn’t be daunted by the challenges we face. As strong as the storm may be, I know that the British people are stronger. Our country was built by people who get things done. We have huge reserves of talent, of energy, and determination. I am confident that together we can ride out the storm, we can rebuild our economy and we can become the modern brilliant Britain that I know we can be.”
Truss spent her first hours after entering Number 10 sacking members of Boris Johnson’s Cabinet and appointing her own, leaning heavily on trusted supporters.
Therese Coffey, one of her closest friends in politics, was named as Deputy Prime Minister and Health Secretary in a signal of the importance the new Prime Minister places on tackling the NHS backlog.
Kwasi Kwarteng was appointed Chancellor, James Cleverly became Foreign Secretary and Suella Braverman, who ran for the Tory leadership, was made Home Secretary.
It means that for the first time in history none of the great offices of state is held by a white man. The three senior figures also have limited Cabinet experience – just three years combined.
Truss chose not to give Cabinet jobs to many supporters of Sunak, her Tory leadership rival, despite calls for a unity front bench. Sunak was not appointed to a Cabinet role.
The move is a political risk given that her two predecessors were forced out of office by rebellions among Conservative MPs.
Truss will hold her first Cabinet meeting on Wednesday before facing Sir Keir Starmer in her first Prime Minister’s Questions. On Tuesday night she spoke on the phone to Joe Biden, the US president.
The White House stressed that Northern Ireland peace must be protected – a hint at past concern over the UK’s push to unilaterally change post-Brexit trade rules in the province.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, said he had invited Truss to Ukraine after becoming the first foreign leader to hold a call with the new Prime Minister.
Johnson brought down the curtain on his three-year premiership with a 7.30am speech outside Downing Street in which he pledged support to Truss and touted his achievements in office.
But he also appeared to hint that hopes of a political comeback were not gone, citing Cincinnatus, an Ancient Roman politician who gave up power but returned again.
Truss’s speech threatened to be overshadowed by a downpour that broke just moments before her arrival at Number 10.
The Downing Street podium was covered by a plastic bag and removed as the shower struck, but was returned as the rain eased for her address.
She laid out her policy priorities in office, saying: “I will get Britain working again. I have a bold plan to grow the economy through tax cuts and reform. I will cut taxes to reward hard work and boost business-led growth and investment. I will deal hands-on with the energy crisis caused by Putin’s war. I will take action this week to deal with energy bills and to secure our future energy supply.”
She named NHS reform as another key drive, saying: “I will make sure that people can get doctors’ appointments and the NHS services they need. We will put our health service on a firm footing.”
There was praise for her predecessor as she said: “Boris Johnson delivered Brexit, the Covid vaccine, and stood up to Russian aggression. History will see him as a hugely consequential prime minister.”

Truss talked up the “grit, courage and determination” of the British people, saying: “I know that we have what it takes to tackle these challenges. Of course it won’t be easy. But we can do it. We will transform Britain into an aspiration nation.”
Fresh details emerged about the huge package of support she is preparing to announce later this week to protect homes and businesses from rising energy bills.
All 28 million households are expected to be protected until 2024 in an intervention that goes further and lasts longer than Labour’s proposals.
Officials in India were looking to conclude the negotiations for the trade agreement by August 31, but political developments in Britain could have slowed the talks a bit…reports Asian Lite News
With Liz Truss becoming new prime minister, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has expressed hope for early conclusion of talks with Britain for a free trade agreement, aimed at boosting bilateral economic ties.
“A little bit of political changes may have derailed (conclusion of FTA negotiations) by few weeks, but I do hope (that) with…Liz Truss assuming prime ministership of the UK, we may now be able to make up for some lost time (to conclude the FTA negotiations),” Goyal said here on Monday while addressing members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
Officials in India were looking to conclude the negotiations for the trade agreement by August 31, but political developments in Britain could have slowed the talks a bit.
In January, both countries formally launched talks for a free trade agreement (FTA) to boost bilateral trade and investments. It was launched when Boris Johnson was the prime minister and Truss was the international trade secretary.
In such pacts, two countries either eliminate or significantly reduce customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them besides easing norms for promoting investments and services trade.
“We are at an advanced stage (of FTA talks) with the UK…Miss Anne-Mary, who is currently the trade and investment Minister, and I are in regular contact and we are shooting for an agreement between India and the UK within the next few months possibly by Diwali,” Goyal said.
India has become one of the world’s attractive investment destinations and it is evident from the way world leaders and developed countries are making every effort to expand trade and investments into India and looking for bilateral agreement, he added.
Talks are happening on certain goods like scotch and automobiles from the UK side and certain products from the Indian side. India’s main exports to the UK include ready-made garments and textiles, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, petroleum and petrochemical products, transport equipment and parts, spices, metal products, machinery and instruments, pharma and marine items.
Major imports include precious and semi-precious stones, ores and metal scraps, engineering goods, professional instruments, non-ferrous metals, chemicals and machinery. In the services sector, the UK is one of the largest markets in Europe for Indian IT services.
The bilateral trade increased to $17.5 billion in 2021-22 compared to $13.2 billion in 2020-21. India’s exports stood at $10.5 billion in 2021-22, while imports were $7 billion.
Earlier on Tuesday, Truss was invited by the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II to head the UK’s government after she won a leadership contest in the ruling Conservative party on Monday…reports Asian Lite News
As a first major step, Britain’s new Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss, the third woman to be at the apex of a British government, could freeze household energy bills at their current level for about 18 months to tackle the severe cost of living crisis that has gripped the country. Financial Times estimated such an intervention could cost the British Treasury 100 billion pounds.
The Guardian newspaper maintained Truss will pack her cabinet with loyalists and there was unlikely to be any place in it for her defeated opponent in the 8-week race for the premiership Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian extraction. It reported that Kwasi Kwarteng could replace him as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Meanwhile, Sunak extended his ‘full support’ to Truss.
The Bank of England, the United Kingdom’s central bank, had forecast about the month ago that the British economy would sink into recession in the next quarter and remain in such a condition for five consecutive quarters. The proposed subsidy, while welcome for Britons wilting under extraordinary energy prices, will impose a further burden on the government’s finances.
Furthermore, it indicated that Home Secretary Priti Patel was destined to be banished to the back benches, with another person of Indian origin Suella Braverman filling her post. With James Cleverly tipped to become Foreign Secretary — a position Truss occupied — only Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, could retain his portfolio among the top four ‘great offices of state’. It remains to be seen if Alok Sharma retains a presence in the cabinet.
Earlier on Tuesday, Truss was invited by the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II to head the UK’s government after she won a leadership contest in the ruling Conservative party on Monday.
The day of constitutional formalities began on Tuesday with Boris Johnson finally leaving 10 Downing Street, the office-cum-residence of a British prime minister, after he was forced to resign following being fined by the London Metropolitan Police for attending social gatherings in violation of rules during a Covid lockdown period. He was also accused of misleading parliament on the issue, which is traditionally a sackable offence in the UK.
However, in a farewell speech outside the door of Number 10, he described himself as a ‘booster rocket’ which had ‘fulfilled its function’, before flying to Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where Elizabeth, 96, is presently in residence, to submit his resignation. Normally she grants audiences for such purposes at Buckingham Palace in London; but could not make the trip down to the British capital because she now suffers from ‘episodic mobility issues’.

Johnson journey was followed by Truss separately undertaking the same trip to be formally asked by Britain’s head of state to form the next administration.
The process completed a remarkable exhibition of revolving door politics, with Truss becoming the UK’s fourth prime minister in six years.
The instability began in June 2016 with David Cameron stepping down after he lost the Brexit vote.
He was succeeded by Theresa May, Britain’s second woman prime minister after Margaret Thatcher, until she was ousted by her MPs and Johnson took over the reins.
Germany said on Sunday it would spend at least 65 billion euros on shielding customers and businesses from rocketing inflation, triggered mainly by higher energy costs…reports Asian Lite News
Liz Truss was working on what looks set to be Europe’s biggest energy crisis support package so far as countries scramble to protect households and businesses from soaring bills and shore up struggling suppliers.
Truss, who took over from Boris Johnson on Tuesday, is planning to freeze household energy bills at the current level for this winter and next, paid for by government-backed loans to suppliers, the BBC reported, adding the scheme could cost 100-130 billion pounds.
The government is also working on help for businesses, but this is likely to be more complex and would be reviewed more frequently, the BBC said.
European governments are pushing through multibillion-euro packages to prevent utilities from collapsing and protect households amid soaring energy costs triggered mainly by the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Benchmark European gas prices have surged about 340% in a year, and jumped as much as 35% on Monday after Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom (GAZP.MM) said it would indefinitely extend a shutdown to the major Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.
Europe has accused Russia of weaponising energy supplies in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. Russia blames those sanctions for causing the gas supply problems, which it puts down to pipeline faults.
Germany said on Sunday it would spend at least 65 billion euros on shielding customers and businesses from rocketing inflation, triggered mainly by higher energy costs.
Several countries are also providing billions in support to energy distributors exposed to wild swings in prices that are forcing them to cough up huge collateral for supplies.
Norwegian energy company Equinor has estimated these collateral payments, known as margin calls, amounted to at least 1.5 trillion euros ($1.5 trillion) in Europe, excluding Britain.
Finnish utility Fortum said on Tuesday it had signed a bridge financing arrangement with government investment company Solidium worth 2.35 billion euros to cover its collateral needs. read more
A Finnish government official told Reuters the support was in addition to the 10 billion euros of liquidity guarantees Helsinki announced for power companies on Sunday.
“The ongoing energy crisis in Europe is caused by Russia’s decision to use energy as a weapon, and it is now also severely affecting Fortum and other Nordic power producers,” Fortum Chief Executive Markus Rauramo said in a statement.
Swiss utility Axpo said it had sought and received a credit line of up to 4 billion Swiss francs ($4.1 billion) from the government to help its finances.
The Swiss government has lined up a 10 billion franc safety net for power firms, but decided to allocate the funds to Axpo even though the legislation is still before parliament.
The Financial Times also reported that Britain’s largest energy supplier, Centrica (CNA.L), was in talks with banks to secure billions of pounds in extra credit. Centrica declined to comment.
Many European power distributors have already collapsed and some major generators could be at risk, hit by caps that limit the price rises they can pass to consumers, or caught out by hedging bets.
As your Prime Minister, I am confident that together we can ride out the storm, rebuild our economy and become the modern, brilliant Britain that I know we can be.
Utilities often sell power in advance to secure a certain price, but must maintain a “minimum margin” deposit in case of default before they supply the power. This has raced higher with surging energy prices, leaving firms struggling to find cash.
Soaring prices are forcing energy-hungry industries to scale back production, raising the chances of European economies plunging into recession.
Aluminium Dunkerque, France’s biggest aluminium smelter, plans to reduce output by a fifth in response to mounting electricity prices, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. The company was not immediately available to comment.
Truss on Tuesday named Conservative Brexiteer Kemi Badenoch as the new British trade chief…reports Asian Lite News
Prime Minister Liz Truss has appointed business and energy secretary Kwasi Kwarteng as the new finance minister, her office said in a statement on Tuesday.
Kwarteng, an ideological ally of Truss, has said that her government can afford to borrow more to fund support to households and businesses on their energy bills, but it will remain responsible with the public finances.
He had been business and energy minister since January 2021, previously holding a junior role in the department, and he also worked in the Brexit ministry.
Like Truss, Kwarteng has expressed his admiration for former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but has shown some pragmatism in applying those principles in his previous roles in government.
Kemi Badenoch named new trade chief
Truss on Tuesday named Conservative Brexiteer Kemi Badenoch as the new British trade chief.
Badenoch, who ran in the leadership contest against Truss, was a minister at the U.K.’s leveling-up department until she joined dozens of colleagues in resigning from Boris Johnson’s government in July over his handling of a number of scandals.
— Department for Business and Trade (@biztradegovuk) September 6, 2022
She was previously an equalities minister and has also served as a junior minister in the Treasury.
Badenoch is seen as being on the right of the party, and stood on an “anti-woke” ticket during the contest, while also arguing for the state to be slimmed down.
Last month, a former Google engineer revealed that the web browser used within China’s TikTok app can track every keystroke made by its users…reports Asian Lite News
A US lawmaker on Wednesday introduced a bill to prohibit the Chinese video sharing app TikTok from accessing thier citizens’ user data from within China and block the installation of the application on government devices.
The bill, introduced by U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson from South Dakota, also intends to direct the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to initiate an investigation to determine if TikTok has engaged in unfair or deceptive acts or practices.
“Today, U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) introduced the Block the Tok Act, a bill that would prohibit TikTok from accessing U.S. citizens’ user data from within China and block the installation of TikTok on government devices,” US Representative Johnson said in a statement.
The bill also looks to prohibit the installation and use of TikTok at military installations and national security agencies (CIA, NSA, FBI, etc.). It also wishes to prohibit the installation and use of TikTok on federal government devices.
Earlier this year, reports indicated the Chinese parent company of TikTok was freely accessing sensitive user data such as passwords, keystrokes, browser history, and voice and facial recognition
“According to TikTok’s own employees, ‘everything is seen in China,’” said Johnson. “It might seem trivial to go after an app known for viral dance videos, but TikTok is a national security concern. TikTok has more than one billion users, and China is using Americans’ information to advance its communist agenda. It’s no secret China’s goal is to replace the U.S. as the world’s superpower – Americans shouldn’t help China advance its agenda. Block the Tok keeps China’s hands off your personal information.”
According to Johnson, TikTok circumvented privacy safeguards since 2020 and paid nearly USD 100 million in fines for improper data collection. Currently, several government agencies have adviced employees against downloading the Chinese app on government devices.
The Block the Tok Act would put safeguards in place to ensure better user privacy, pursue transparency, and protect our national security. This act comes as several countries have expressed apprehensions about the Chinese app. Some have even banned the application citing security risks.
Last month, a former Google engineer revealed that the web browser used within China’s TikTok app can track every keystroke made by its users.
A report by The New York Times said that collecting information on what people type on their phones while visiting outside websites, which can reveal credit card numbers and passwords, is often a feature of malware and other hacking tools.
While major technology companies might use such trackers as they test new software, it is not common for them to release a major commercial app with the feature, whether or not it is enabled, NTY quoted researchers as saying.
“Based on Krause’s findings, the way TikTok’s custom in-app browser monitors keystrokes is problematic, as the user might enter their sensitive data such as login credentials on external websites,” said Jane Manchun Wong, an independent software engineer and security researcher who studies apps for new features.
However, TikTok in the statement said that Krause’s report was “incorrect and misleading” and that the feature was used for “debugging, troubleshooting and performance monitoring.”
“Contrary to the report’s claims, we do not collect keystroke or text inputs through this code,” TikTok said. (ANI)
Europe’s leaders have talked up the need for present a united front against the fallout from Russia’s actions…reports Asian Lite News
France is reactivating a disused pipeline in its northeastern Moselle administrative department, originally built for east-to-west flows, to send Germany gas under an energy deal unveiled by President Emmanuel Macron, according to French officials.
France will be able to deliver 130 gigawatt hours (GWh) per day, a tiny fraction of German needs, French energy ministry officials have previously said, while Germany will be ready to provide France power in the event of tight supplies mid-winter.
Macron is under pressure to shore up France’s power imports, with the country’s state-run power giant EDF grappling with a record number of nuclear reactor outages that are aggravating Europe’s energy crisis.
For its part, Germany has been at the sharp end of Russian cuts to European gas supplies, resulting in worries that persistently low Russian volumes could lead to winter shortages.
Europe’s leaders have talked up the need for present a united front against the fallout from Russia’s actions.
“Macron is under pressure because of the electricity situation in France. So the signal ‘Germany and France support each other’ is important,” a German government source said.
“We do not expect that France will solve our gas problems. But every possible delivery of gas is a sign to the markets that we will pull through the winter.”
The reactivated interconnector will allow France to deliver Germany up to 20 terawatt hours (TWh) of gas from its reserves over the winter – equivalent to roughly 2% of the gas needs of Europe’s largest economy.
Before the war in Ukraine and the cuts to Russian deliveries, gas typically flowed from east to west across the continent.
France already delivers some gas to Germany, typically via Belgium or Switzerland. West-to-east flows through the Moselle interconnector would be a first, one French energy ministry said.
“Germany needs our gas and we need power from the rest of Europe, notably Germany,” Macron told a news conference after a phone call on Monday with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
French and German technocrats were working to overcome small technical matters and regulatory issues related to ordorants, a French energy ministry official said. France adds odorants to gas before it is piped across the country, while Germany does not.
“It will happen,” the energy official said of the pipeline reactivation.
Hyderabad to become city with 100% sewage treatment facility
Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, is heading towards achieving the singular distinction of becoming India’s first city to have 100 per cent sewage treatment facility. This is expected to happen by next year.
In order to achieve this, work is going on continuously in construction on 31 Sewage Treatment Plants in Greater Hyderabad and its outskirts. These new STPs will not only treat the generated sewage but also go a long way in protecting water bodies including rivers, water bodies, ponds and tanks in the city.
The State Government with the aim to improve the sewage treatment infrastructure in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits had sanctioned Rs.3,866.21 crore in 2021 to establish 31 STPs. These will have the capacity to treat 1,260 million litres per day of sewage.
The first phase of the project envisages construction of eight STPs in the north of Musi river, including the Uppal, Kapra, Makajgiri, Alwal circles, while the second phase will see construction of six STPs in the south of Musi river including Rajendranagar and LB Nagar circles, while 17 STPs will be made in the third phase to include Hussainsagar catchment areas of Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, Serilingampally circles.
The scaling up of sewage treatment facilities has been done with a view to tackle the increase in the sewage water in the next 10 years.
At present the existing 25 STPs have the capacity to treat 772 MLD of the 1650 MLD generated every day while the remaining is allowed to flow in Musi river and other water bodies.
