China on Monday announced that it will resume issuing visas to students, especially Indians, intending to pursue education in the country.
“Warmest congrats to #Indian #students! Your patience proves worthwhile. I can really share your excitement & happiness. Welcome back to #China!”, Ji Rong, who is Counsellor, Department of Asian Affairs at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a tweet.
The Chinese embassy in India, on its website, said that it has updated the “Application Procedures and Material Requirements of China Visa”, which will be implemented from August 24, and shared steps of the new process.
China will issue X1 visas to students who intend to pursue higher academic education in the country. These include new and old students as well and China wants them to return at earliest.
Around 23,000 Indian students, a majority of which were undergoing medical education were stuck back home due to Covid visa restrictions.

India on China-Taiwan tensions
In the backdrop of China-Taiwan tensions, India on Monday underscored that any “coercive or unilateral” action that seeks to change the status quo by force will undermine the common security.
At a UNSC briefing on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Promote Common Security Through Dialogue and Cooperation” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj underscored that any coercive or unilateral action that seeks to change the status quo by force is an affront to common security.
Notably, after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid to visit Taiwan against China’s wishes, Beijing started holding large-scale military exercises while threatening to take over the self-ruled island.
Earlier as well, India urged the avoidance of unilateral actions to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait amid the rising military tensions between China and Taiwan. Addressing a weekly media briefing, External Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that efforts should be made to maintain peace and stability in the region.
“Like many other countries, India too is concerned at recent developments. We urge the exercise of restraint, avoidance of unilateral actions to change the status quo, de-escalation of tension and efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region,” Bagchi said to question over tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
In response to a question on India’s position on the one-China principle, the MEA spokesperson said, “India’s relevant policies are well known and consistent and they do not require reiteration.”
