A former US Army major and his anesthesiologist wife were federally indicted Thursday for allegedly plotting to leak highly sensitive health care data about military patients to Russia, media reported.
The accused were identified as Jamie Lee Henry, the former major who was also a doctor at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and his wife, Dr. Anna Gabrielian, according to US Department of Justice (DOJ).
The accused were charged in an unsealed indictment in a federal court in Maryland with conspiracy and the wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information, news agency Reuters reported.
It alleges that the plot started after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.
The pair wanted to try to help the Russian government by providing them with data to help the Putin regime “gain insights into the medical conditions of individuals associated with the US government and military,” prosecutors said.
The two met with someone whom they believed was a Russian official, but in fact was actually an FBI undercover agent, the indictment says, it was reported.
On Aug. 31, according to the indictment, the FBI agent met Gabrielian and Henry at a hotel in Gaithersburg, Maryland, near Washington, D.C.
Gabrielian gave the agent medical information about the spouse of a person employed by the Office of Naval Intelligence — and highlighted a medical issue that Russia could exploit, the indictment says.
According to NBC report, Henry allegedly provided information on at least five individuals who were patients at Fort Bragg, including a retired Army officer, a current Department of Defense employee, the spouse of a U.S. Army veteran, and two spouses of deceased US Army veterans.
The defendants face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison on the conspiracy charge and a maximum of 10 years in federal prison for each count of disclosing health information, it was reported.
