Ladies of Virtue Outreach CIC (LOVO) is at the forefront of community empowerment, tackling challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and domestic violence. LOVO nurtures individual potential through its core pillars: Community, Growth, Gratitude, Self-Care, and Wisdom. A cornerstone of LOVO’s mission is their weekly global lunch in Peckham, where women from diverse cultural backgrounds come together to share traditional dishes. Given that rice is a common ingredient in these meals, Tilda’s support aligns perfectly with LOVO’s celebration of cultural diversity and unity.

The £10,000 donation from Tilda will fund LOVO’s English language programmes and the weekly global lunches for 12 months, expanding their ability to reach and support more women in need. “This partnership with Tilda is a significant step forward for our organisation,” said Ola Olive Stephen, Founder & Director of LOVO. “The funds will enable us to reach more women and provide them with the tools and support they need to overcome their challenges and lead fulfilling lives.”

In addition to financial support, the Tilda x LOVO collaboration will include a series of community events in 2024, engaging local communities and providing valuable support and resources. The first joint event in June featured a vibrant community gathering in Peckham, with activities such as a Zumba class, a nutritionist talk, and a well-being session. Looking ahead, the partnership will continue with a second major event in September, promising to further amplify the impact of this collaboration.

“We are honoured to partner with LOVO on its mission to empower women now and in the future,” said Jean Phillipe, Managing Director of Tilda. “At Tilda, we are committed to supporting initiatives that align with our belief in the importance of strengthening our community and cultural diversity.”

Tilda’s B Corp certification in 2023 underscores its commitment to meeting high standards of social and environmental responsibility.   This partnership marks a significant milestone in Tilda’s ongoing efforts to contribute positively to society by supporting organisations championing diversity. Together with LOVO, Tilda looks forward to making a tangible difference in the lives of women and their families, creating a future where life in all its flavours can thrive.

‘Special ties at risk if UK bans arms sales to Israel’

The Labour government has yet to decide whether to suspend licences for arms exports to Israel over concerns that international humanitarian law may have been breached in the war in Gaza….reports Asian Lite News

Labour risks a serious rift in the UK’s special relationship with the US if it goes ahead with a ban on arms sales to Israel, Donald Trump’s last national security adviser has warned.

Robert O’Brien, still one of the key security voices in the Trump circle, said the UK was endangering its future role in the F-35 project as well as facing the risk of US congressional counter-embargos. The F-35 fighter jets are made in part by British arms firms and are used by Israel’s air force as part of its bombing of Gaza.

The Labour government has yet to decide whether to suspend licences for arms exports to Israel over concerns that international humanitarian law may have been breached in the war in Gaza.

Speaking to the Policy Exchange thinktank, O’Brien also urged the UK government to do everything it could to shut down the international criminal court’s (ICC) investigation of Israel, accusing the body – which is headed by a British prosecutor, Karim Khan – of being highly selective over which leaders it chose to prosecute.

It is the first public sign of the scale of potential tensions facing a Labour government if it pursues a human rights-based foreign policy with the US under a Trump administration.

O’Brien said if a UK arms embargo was imposed “there is a potential there for a serious rift, whether it is a Harris or Trump administration, between the UK and the US and I would tread very carefully”.

He added: “The F-35 is a joint project and it is going to continue to go to Israel no matter what Turkey, the UK or any other country has to do with it. You would hate to see a situation where the UK is no longer a partner in the F-35 project or other advanced platforms because of a very ill-advised arms embargo on Israel.

“The consequences of an arms embargo on Israel is something the UK really needs to think about at a time when Russia and China are posing a massive threat to the west.”

He added: “A lot of hi-tech on which the UK relies comes directly or indirectly via Israel.”

He said the US would not be imposing an arms embargo on Israel, adding any allies that did would risk real danger and may imperil their own supply chains as well the ability to sell arms products in the US, such as from the British firm BAE Systems. An arms embargo would certainly lead to congressional action to put a counter-embargo on any UK sales in the US.

O’Brien said: “It is an extraordinarily dangerous policy proposal and has the potential to tear open the special relationship and really hurt the western alliance and Nato.”

O’Brien described the ICC as “really an impediment to peace in the region”, condemning the court’s scrutiny of Israeli politicians including the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

“For the ICC to go after Israeli leaders is a joke … The UK should take every step necessary to shut it down,” he said.

“It sends a loud message of unity at a time when some have sought to divide our communities. Music performers will include Cultur FM, Kofi Stone, Krar Collective, Shingai, Phoebs and Karen Nyame, while there will be a range of activities for children and young people including face painting and art workshops.

The free festival is an opportunity for Londoners and visitors to embrace the diversity of Black culture in the capital. This year’s event will celebrate and recognise the importance of collectivism within the community and inspire a sense of togetherness.

A range of Black-owned businesses will be offering delicious food from Ghana, Guyana, Jamaica, Mauritius and Nigeria, including plantain bites, fusion fish and chips, plant-based ice-creams and West African vegan delights. Alongside entertainment, there will be businesses and organisations offering a range of services to support the capital’s diverse led business, including London & Partners’ grow London Local and Social Enterprise Foundervine who will provide support to entrepreneurs, with drop-in clinics for start-ups and the more established.

Black On The Square launched last year as part of the Mayor’s commitment to identifying, supporting and celebrating creative talent from London’s diverse Black communities. The celebration is now part of London’s annual calendar of cultural events hosted by the Mayor on Trafalgar Square, which also includes Diwali, Eid, St Patrick’s Day, Lunar New Year, Vaisakhi, St George’s Day, Chanukah, and Pride. This event is curated by an independent Creative Programmer from Fynn Studios and shaped with a Community Advisory Group to ensure engagement with Londoners.

Kobi Prempeh, Creative Programmer said: “This year’s Black On The Square is a celebration of collectivism. With acts such as Krar Collective, Cultur FM and the film showcase hosted by We Are Parable, it is not just an event for people to come together, it will be a place where Londoners and its visitors can be inspired by the multitude of ways Black organisations are encouraging and enshrining the essence of what makes this city so great.”

Shingai, artist and performer, said: “I’m excited to celebrate with allies, brothers & sisters across the diaspora, and our Ancestors through the power of music! After a summer of knock-out festival performances, it’ll be special playing in the heart of our capital city. The contributions of Black & Brown communities to UK creative culture are beyond immense. So, being part of a movement celebrating our vibrancy is beyond thrilling.”

Kojo Owusu Marfo, Vice Chair of the Community Advisory Group said: “As Vice Chair of the Cultural Advisory Group, I am honoured to support Black On The Square, a powerful celebration of Black Culture at the heart of London. This event not only showcases the richness and diversity of our community but also creates the much-needed platform for black talent and businesses. Black On The Square is a testament to the creativity, resilience, and unity within the Black community, and I am proud to be part of the Mayor’s initiative that uplifts and empowers us all.”

US lawmakers urge Defence Secy to blacklist Chinese battery maker

The lawmakers in their letter to the Secretary have demanded CATL to be immediately placed on the list required under Section 1260H..reports Asian Lite News

The Chairman of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (SCCCP) John Moolenaar and US Senator Marco Rubio has demanded US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin to place China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) under list demanding more scrutiny.

The lawmakers in their letter to the Secretary have demanded CATL to be immediately placed on the list required under Section 1260H of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The Section 1260H List provides transparency on Chinese military companies operating in the United States and helps Washington to counter the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) Military-Civil Fusion (MCF) strategy.

The SCCCP statement claimed that CATL squarely fits the requirements of 1260H as the list exposes a company that is involved in bolstering Beijing’s military ambitions and contributing to MCF while continuously also operating in the United States.

CATL is an electric vehicle battery company with deep ties to the Chinese Communist Party and its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

The lawmakers emphasised that CATL is a key contributor to the PRC’s military-civil fusion policy to enhance the capabilities of China’s military.

They further wanted that reliance on CATL batteries endangers US national security by making the country dependent on the CCP for energy infrastructure and supporting a company that backs military systems that could target American troops in future conflicts.

The statement further added that the US Congress has repeatedly exposed the company’s nefarious activities in the United States and claimed that CATL’s placement on the Section 1260H List is long overdue and justified.

“CATL’s connections to the CCP, and its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), are extensive and obvious. A Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) report quoted in the SCCCP report revealed that CATL has over time enjoyed “subsidies, tax incentives, favourable procurement deals, and additional policy benefits.” These benefits propelled CATL toward its massive 37.5 per cent share of the global electric vehicle (EV) battery market, which the company boasted about on X just last month,” the statement read.

“CATL’s central role in the CCP’s MCF strategy is further illuminated by the company’s close alignment and partnership with several companies already included on the Section 1260H List. For example, in December 2023, CATL announced a formal partnership with China Mobile, a company identified as a Chinese military company by the DoD,” the SCCCP added. (ANI)

HRW laments China for ‘atrocities’ in Xinjiang

The statement by the HRW came on the second anniversary of the release of the United Nations human rights office’s damning report on Xinjiang from August 2022…reports Asian Lite News

Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international human rights watchdog, in a recent statement lamented the Chinese government for its human rights abuses in Xinjiang, claiming that the authorities have been persistently committing human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang.

The statement by the HRW came on the second anniversary of the release of the United Nations human rights office’s damning report on Xinjiang from August 2022.

While commenting on the situation, Maya Wang, the associate China director at Human Rights Watch, stated, “Beijing’s brazen refusal to meaningfully address well-documented crimes in Xinjiang is no surprise, but shows the need for a robust follow-up by the UN human rights chief and UN member states. Contrary to the Chinese government’s claims, its punitive campaign against millions of Uyghurs in Xinjiang continues to inflict great pain.”

Further, the HRW statement claimed that for over past two years, the Chinese government has dismissed all calls to end its severe repression in Xinjiang, which includes mass arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances, mass surveillance, cultural and religious persecution, separation of families, forced labour, sexual violence, and violations of reproductive rights.

Thousands of Muslim minorities in Xinjiang continue to remain wrongfully imprisoned, wherein their relatives living domestically and abroad have little to no contact with their families in China. Many live with the uncertainty about whether their loved ones, sometimes dozens of their family and relatives, remain detained, imprisoned, or forcibly disappeared.

Some families do not know if their relatives who have been taken into custody are even still alive. And the ones that have been released, continue to remain subjected to strict police surveillance and further restrictions on their rights, the HRW statement claimed.

Additionally, on August 27, 2024, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, acknowledged that in Xinjiang “many problematic laws and policies remain in place,” and reported that his office continues to press the Chinese authorities to free those being held in arbitrary detention and clarify the status and whereabouts of those missing.

Turk also said that his office was “continuing to advocate for implementation” of its recommendations, even though the Chinese delegation has continued to reject all recommendations from the 2022 Xinjiang report.

Additionally, the Chinese authorities have also dismissed the report as “illegal and void” in reference to the UN Universal Periodic Review of China’s human rights record in July.

“The UN human rights commissioner has recognised that many of the ‘problematic laws and policies’ that led to the abusive crackdown against Uyghurs remain in place. Two years since the UN Human Rights Office report concluded that abuses in Xinjiang ‘may constitute crimes against humanity,’ the office needs to issue an update on the current situation in Xinjiang and present a concrete action plan for holding those responsible to account,” he added. Pak minister admits to censoring online content

The minister explained that the PTA is mandated to block “unlawful content” under Section 37 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016….reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan’s National Assembly was informed that the contentious Web Monitoring System (WMS) is being used to block online applications and websites in the country, Geo News reported.

In a recent session of the National Assembly, the minister responsible for overseeing the Pakistan Telecom Authority was questioned about the agency’s procedures for restricting online content in the country.

The minister explained that the PTA is mandated to block “unlawful content” under Section 37 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

While the Pakistani authority submits complaints and requests for removal and blocking of applications directly to hosting entities such as Apple and Google, it has deployed the WMS for “internet content management,” the minister said.

He also admitted that the PTA has been using the WMS to block applications and websites within Pakistan.

“The PTA has till date blocked a total of 469 mobile applications (435 Android and 34 Apple) related to various categories including applications against the glory of Islam, indecent/immoral content, and fraudulent activities,” the response stated.

Notably, the controversial Web Monitoring System (known also as the Web Management System) was acquired by Pakistan in 2018 from the Canada-based company Sandvine for USD 18.5 million, Geo News reported citing a report by Coda.

Earlier this month, Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Khawaja Fatima claimed that the WMS was necessary to “deal with cyber security attacks in the country.” However, the minister in charge of the cabinet division in response to the National Assembly made no mention of cyber security concerns when blocking content.

In December 2023, the WMS was further upgraded and tested on landing stations for internet submarine cables SMW 3, 4, and 5, a PTA spokesperson told Geo TV. The Pakistani authority claims that this “upgrade” led to national internet outages and slowdowns prior to the elections.

The minister in charge of the cabinet division admitted to the National Assembly that despite its attempt to block content at the gateway level the content could still be accessed in Pakistan through VPNs, adding that VPN users who “bypass the gateway through their private traffic are also bypassing the state policy regarding banned content.”

Social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter) has been officially blocked in Pakistan since February 17, and the website of the opposition political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has remained inaccessible since before the elections.

However, government officials, including ministers and the prime minister himself, have been using X despite its official ban. But, it is unclear whether they are accessing the platform through VPNs, as reported by Geo News. (ANI)

PM Modi formally invited to SCO meeting in Islamabad

Pakistan is set to host the SCO heads of government meeting on October 15-16…reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan on Thursday formally confirmed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting being held in Islamabad in mid-October.

Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, at her weekly press briefing, said the country had sent invitations to the heads of countries to participate in the meeting, Pakistani media reported

“An invitation has also been sent to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi,” she said, adding that some countries had already confirmed their participation in the meeting.

Shehbaz Sharif.(photo:instagram)

“It will be informed in due course which country has confirmed,” Baloch added.

Pakistan is set to host the SCO heads of government meeting on October 15-16. The event will be preceded by a ministerial meeting and several rounds of senior officials’ meetings focused on financial, economic, socio-cultural, and humanitarian cooperation among the SCO member states.

Analysts see the invitation as a “protocol” as PM Modi is unlikely to accept the invitation as relations between the two neighbouring countries have been tense since August 5, 2019, when India abrogated the Constitution’s Article 370, changing the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

It is expected that PM Modi may depute a ministerial delegation to represent India as the SCO meeting does not require heads of state to participate. In the past as well, SCO CHG meetings have seen India represented by ministers and the same pattern is this time as well.

PM Modi had not also attended the SCO’s 24th annual summit of heads of state held in Kazakhstan on July 3-4 this year and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had represented India in Astana.

Pakistani analysts say they do not expect that PM Modi will come to Pakistan for the meeting.

“Extending invitations to PM Modi and all other member states is a compulsive protocol any host country follows. Pakistan has done the same. I do not see this as a political stunt. However, I do not see PM Modi landing in Islamabad,” political analyst Kamran Yousaf said.

Last year, Pakistan’s then-Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited India for the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

Starmer the unlikely gambler

Every time I go to my supermarket I see a big container asking for food to be donated. Food banks are now a common thing in this country. Everywhere I go I see people sleeping on the pavement. Outside one of the supermarkets I go to shop a man is regularly sleeping and begging for some money. On the tubes young men approach the passengers telling pitiful stories in the hope of getting them to give some money. You expect this in developing countries trying to lift themselves out of poverty, not in a country that is the sixth largest economy in the world … writes Mihir Bose

You would not expect Sir Keir Starmer to be in a casino in Monte Carlo putting down chips in order to win the jackpot. Nor would you expect him to spend his afternoons in a High Street bookie’s shop trying to find the winner of the 2:15 in Carlisle. Yet, his announcement this week that Britain faces severe financial and societal problems and that this will take time, perhaps even 10 years, to solve shows that he is a gambler. His gamble is that by warning the people of the perils we face when the good times come they will feel very grateful to him and to the Labour Party.

Normally politicians when they come to power, particularly after such a resounding victory as Keir Starmer has, raising Labour from the ashes of bitter defeat under Jeremy Corbyn, would not be bearing such messages of doom. They would be talking of the sunny lands that can already be glimpsed and of the wonderful times that are coming. They would be promising people, like Harold Macmillan did in 1957, that you have never had it so good on the back of which he won the 1959 election. The message from Starmer is you never had it so bad, and the good times will take a long time to come.

So, what is Starmer playing at?

Obviously, this country faces major problems both in economics and in societal terms. It is true recent unemployment and economic figures are better than expected. Unemployment fell in three months to June and the UK has grown more rapidly than any other member of the G7 in the six months of this year. Aso the inflation rate is now 2.2% having reached a peak of 11 %. But the fundamental issues of growth remain. Among the G7 countries this country’s productivity is by far the worst and while there was a £39 billion surplus in services there was a £52 million deficit in goods. This country will never recover its manufacturing dominance of old but it’s not even doing anything to match some of its competitors.

The riots we have seen clearly indicate social problems which are deep rooted with the whole question of immigration once again an issue as it has been for the last half a century except back in the 60s it was a question of sending back legal migrants because of their colour. Now it’s a question of asylum seekers and those who come illegally on boats.

But despite all that to give such a dire warning within weeks of coming to office is very unusual.

It is understandable that Starmer should try to dampen down expectations. But the real strategy is to pin the problems firmly on the Conservatives and here the Labour Party have learnt from the Conservative play book as played by David Cameron. When he came to power he and his close friend George Osborne, the Chancellor, pinned austerity firmly on Labour. A departing Labour minister had left a note for his incoming Conservative successor saying there is no money left. It was meant to be a joke and the sort of bonhomie that goes on between politicians of different parties despite the strident notes they strike when in public and when discussing policies in an effort to get people to vote for them. But far from treating it as a joke the minister and his colleagues used it as a serious document and has never let Labour forget it.

Labour, after nursing this wound for 14 years, has decided that the problems this country faces will always be associated with the departing Tories. This serves one major aim. It is to make sure that the Tories are painted as a party that cannot govern this country. This is basically a right of centre country which almost invariably votes the Tories into power, only very occasionally it turns to Labour. Harold Wilson tried to reverse it. Tony Blair came the closest with three election victories and had he not ventured into Iraq might have managed it. Gordon Brown, despite claiming to be the cleverest politician of his generation, failed his lines and Labour lost power for 14 years. Now, having come back in such a dramatic fashion, Keir Starmer wants to make Labour the party that is always in power not occasionally tasting power after decades of Conservative rule. To brand the Conservatives as unable to govern, unable to manage the economy, unable to deal with societal problems would be the ideal way to do it.

The problem with this approach is that given the conditions the country is in people are looking for some hope and for some relief. You do not have to even walk much around the country to see that there are problems. You expect this in developing countries trying to lift themselves out of poverty, not in a country that is the sixth largest economy in the world.

Also, in doing this Starmer is breaking with the way previous Labour Prime Ministers had behaved. Starmer is the fourth Labour Prime Minister to win a huge majority after Clement Attlee, Harold Wilson and Tony Blair. But in 1945, despite the war and all the devastations it had brought, Attlee promised a New Britain and in many ways delivered with the National Health Service and nationalisation of industries that needed to be government controlled. Harold Wilson promised the white heat of technology and while that didn’t quite work out there were many innovations such as the Open University which are now part of society. Tony Blair promised that the sunlit world was coming and while many of his policies were opposed by the Conservatives they are now part of the fabric of society. Just as the Conservatives have long accepted the National Health Service they do not oppose the minimum wage or having directly elected mayors. Those Labour governments while they told people that the Conservatives had left behind a mess offered hope and showed the path ahead.

Starmer is not doing that. Starmer is laying it down as starkly and bleakly as possible.

Politics can work in different ways. You only have to see that by the reaction to Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, deciding that the winter fuel allowance will not be paid to everybody over 60. This was a measure introduced by Gordon Brown when Labour came to power in 1997. It was not means tested. That the well off and rich receive it was always curious and what Rachel Reeves has done can be justified but it also means that people will miss out. The means testing has raised a storm of protest even from Labour. This shows political decisions have to be well packaged and the Rachel Reeves announcement was very clearly not.

I agree with Starmer’s message that the politics of performance is not what we need. The politics of performance is a recent phenomenon in British politics and will always be associated with Boris Johnson who reduced politics to a musical act or a performance in the West End theatre. Tony Blair did like his sound bites. But Johnson took it to a new level that has never been matched. The politics of performance also means always seeking the next day’s, even the next hour’s headline on X , TikTok 24-hour news, the following morning’s paper. Politics needs to be much more than a song and a dance routine at the end of which there is nothing to cherish.

Starmer is right to move away from that. But his problem is that he comes over as a technocrat, he may prove a good technocrat but on that the jury is out. Great politicians always have a memorable phrase you associate with them. In my youth it was John Kennedy in his inaugural speech in 1961 declaring,  ‘Ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country’, a phrase I heard as a young boy in India but which resonated with me even though he had delivered it on a very cold, bitter, winter day in Washington very far removed from the India I was growing up in.

Tony Blair’s memorable words have also long resonated ‘Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime’. I remember the first time I was made aware that Tony Blair was exceptional was when a nephew of mine, who could not be more right wing, told me he had heard this phrase uttered by Tony Blair when appearing in a House of Commons committee and here was a man who would become the next Prime Minister. My nephew was right, and he might have left a different legacy but for his Iraq misadventure.

It is hard to imagine Keir Starmer coming up with a phrase that we will remember. He didn’t come up with one when the riots took place a few weeks ago. He hasn’t come up with one about the economic situation we face.

He gives me the impression of being a football manager who’s taken over a struggling club. He comes in and he tells the fans the club faces many problems and there will have to be changes in the squad if he is to deliver the success the fans so eagerly want. He dampens expectations and then should the club win honours, like a League title, he can present himself as the messiah. Starmer is a very devoted football man and passionate about his favourite team Arsenal who in the last two seasons have come close to winning the Premiership. Arsenal winning it and beating Manchester City, who look invincible, would the equivalent of Tories branded as the party that can’t be trusted in Downing Street and Labour taking over that position.

Starmer has gambled but whether he emerges from the casino with the chips, or the bookies with a lot of cash, is a very open question.

Omar’s veiled jibe at Mufti

Meanwhile, former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah on Thursday took a veiled jibe at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti for calling Abdullahs a political dynasty.

He was visiting the North Kashmir Ganderbal Assembly constituency for the first time after the NC nominated him as the party’s candidate. Without taking Mehbooba Mufti’s name, Omar Abdullah told reporters, “Those who called us dynasts have not themselves joined the elections, but fielded their relatives. If they were against dynastic politics, they should have fielded someone else and not their relatives.”

This was a veiled jibe at the PDP chief who has been opposing the Abdullah family for trying to propagate dynastic rule in J& K.

Her daughter, Iltija Mufti is fighting the Assembly elections as the PDP candidate from the Bijbehara Assembly constituency in Anantnag district.

Asked about his own statement that the Assembly in the UT would be powerless, Omar Abdullah said, “I know the Assembly wouldn’t have much powers, but we have to enter the Assembly to make it powerful”.

Answering another question regarding his statement that the chief minister of the UT would have to beg before the Lt. Governor for the transfer of a peon, he said, “Let us not go into that this time. We are here to choose an MLA and not the chief minister. Let us think about this when the chief minister is chosen,” he said.
