THE LAST FLIGHT FROM LEBANON

While the government will pay to charter the flight, those wanting to get on it will be expected to pay a fee of £350 per seat…reports Asian Lite News

The government has chartered a commercial flight out of Lebanon for Britons wanting to leave amid escalating violence.

The plane is due to take off from Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport on Wednesday with vulnerable British nationals and their spouses, partners and children under 18 to be prioritised, the Foreign Office said.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the situation in Lebanon “is volatile and has potential to deteriorate quickly” and the safety of British citizens there “continues to be our utmost priority”.

He added: “That’s why the UK government is chartering a flight to help those wanting to leave. It is vital that you leave now as further evacuation may not be guaranteed.”

While the government will pay to charter the flight, those wanting to get on it will be expected to pay a fee of £350 per seat.

Commercial flights are still operating and the Foreign Office has been working with partners to increase capacity to enable British nationals to leave, the department said.

There are concerns about rising violence in the Middle East after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in Israeli airstrikes on Beirut at the weekend.

The Iran-backed militant group responded by saying it is ready to fight should Israel launch a ground offensive, with fears mounting that the escalating hostilities could result in a full-scale regional war.

Earlier on Monday, Lammy said the government had set up a rapid response unit to help the estimated 5,000 British citizens in Lebanon, with 700 troops stationed in Cyprus and seats booked on commercial flights to bring them home.

The foreign secretary urged those wanting to flee to make use of this help immediately, saying the government might not be able to protect them if the conflict escalates.

Asked what he would say to British nationals who have not yet taken his advice, he said: “I urge them to leave because the situation on the ground is fast-moving. While we will do everything we can to protect British nationals and those plans are in place to do so, we cannot anticipate the circumstances of the speed with which we could do that if things escalate in a major way over the coming hours and days.”

It emerged today that Israeli special forces are conducting probing operations inside Lebanon, ahead of a potential ground assault.

There were reports of heavy artillery fire in border towns in southern Lebanon on Monday night, after Israel’s defence minister Yoav Gallant warned “the next stage in the war against Hezbollah will begin soon”.

Lammy said he spoke to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday evening and they are both “concerned” about the situation and are urging de-escalation.

Asked if military aid could be sent to Israel if it is attacked by Iran, Lammy said he met with the Iranian foreign minister last week and “I was urging Iran to show restraint”.

“As you would expect over the coming hours, we will continue to be in touch with Iran,” he added.

On whether he agrees with US President Joe Biden that the killing of Hassan Nasrallah was a “measure of justice”, Lammy said: “I don’t mourn the death of the head of a proscribed terrorist organisation, but I do mourn the civilians who have lost their lives in the bloodshed over the last few days.”

About 700 UK troops are being deployed to an RAF base in Cyprus in case the military needs to evacuate British citizens from Lebanon, where the situation is deteriorating.

They join several hundred troops already stationed on the island, where the UK has maintained two armed forces bases for more than 60 years.

Having a permanent military presence in the Middle East gives Britain a number of capabilities including previous evacuation missions.

The UK has two military bases on the island of Cyprus, a legacy of its former status as a British colony. When it gained independence from Britain in 1960, part of the agreement was Britain would maintain two “sovereign base areas” at Akrotiri (south west) and Dhekelia (south east). The one in the news at the moment is Akrotiri due to it hosting an RAF squadron.

In addition to the approximately 700 troops that are being sent to RAF Akrotiri to respond to the current crisis around Lebanon and Israel, a number of units are already deployed at the base. Aircraft based there include RAF Typhoons – used this year in strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen – and Puma helicopters.

Two British warships are also in the region and would be used if any evacuation operation is ordered. Border Force and Foreign Office officials will also support the military.

The location of Cyprus, just a short distance from Lebanon, makes it a possible staging post for any evacuation of British citizens from Lebanon, of which there are thousands.

“RAF Akrotiri handles a lot of stuff,” military analyst professor Michael Clarke said. “It can take a lot of troops, a lot of facilities. It’s the obvious place – and it’s about 220 miles away from the Lebanese coast. “So you can helicopter people to ships, or get people to ships and then helicopter them to Akrotiri or helicopter back and forth to Akrotiri. You can get an aircraft in. There’s lots of things you can do.”

During the meeting, the two leaders expressed commitment to deepen and diversify bilateral trade for the mutual benefit of two nations. It was the first meeting between PM Modi and the Crown Prince of Kuwait.

In a press release, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “Prime Minister conveyed that India attaches utmost importance to its bilateral relations with Kuwait. Both leaders recalled the strong historical ties and people-to-people linkages between the two countries. They noted with satisfaction that the two countries were supporting each other with energy and food security requirements.”

Small Cities Power Festive Shopping Spree

Amazons said it witnessed a record 11 crore customer visits in the first 48 hours, with 80 per cent coming from tier 2 and smaller towns…reports Asian Lite News

Driven by rising disposable incomes, especially in the small cities and towns amid growing digital payments, the India festive season has kicked off to a roaring start, ecommerce platforms said on Monday.

Amazons said it witnessed a record 11 crore customer visits in the first 48 hours, with 80 per cent coming from tier 2 and smaller towns, during the “The Amazon Great Indian Festival 2024”.

According to the company, more than three lakh unique products including apparel, smartphones, beauty, everyday essentials and more were delivered within the same day or next day.

UPI usage on the platform grew 16 per cent compared to last year.

According to Saurabh Srivastava, Vice President–Categories, Amazon India, they are witnessing an overwhelming participation of sellers across India, including small and medium businesses.

Flipkart said it saw more than 33 crore user visits on its platform during Early Access and Day 1 combined during the ‘Big Billion Days 2024’, reflecting festive enthusiasm from shoppers from across the country.

“Some of the early trends indicate an increase in demand for categories that enable a lifestyle upgrade, and tier 2+ cities have been showing growth in the run up to this year’s festive season,” said Harsh Chaudhary, Vice President-Growth, Flipkart.

Myntra said it witnessed 15 times new users over business as usual (BAU) joining the platform, and a two times growth in OPM (orders per minute) at peak over last year, in the opening hour of its Big Fashion Festival, including 120 million visitors during Early Access and Day 1 sales.

Unicommerce said it saw e-commerce order volumes growing by 20 per cent during the first four days of the festive season sale (September 26-September 29), compared to the first four days of the festive season sales last year.

In the same period, the gross merchandise value (GMV) also increased by 24 per cent over last year.

Kapil Makhija, MD and CEO of Unicommerce, said they see an increasing number of brands participating in the sale season, affirming India’s status as a digitally forward country.

₹1.2 Lakh Cr Festive Boost for India E-commerce

Driven by high pent-up demand and premiumisation wave, e-commerce sales in India are estimated to reach Rs 1 lakh-Rs 1.2 lakh crore in gross merchandise value (GMV) this festive season, a report said on Monday.

This will be 20 per cent year-on-year growth for the e-commerce sector, according to the report by Redseer Strategy Consultants.

Mobiles, electronics and fashion categories are set to gain momentum while other categories (beauty and personal care, home and quick-commerce-led grocery) have had a better business as usual (BAU) performance and will see an incremental upside, “taking their festive growth figure to north of 25 per cent,” the report mentioned.

According to Kushal Bhatnagar, Associate Partner at Redseer, mobiles and electronics remain key value and growth drivers this festive season, especially as consumers respond to affordability options that make premium products more accessible.

“Moreover, sellers and platforms have potential to unlock the pent-up demand in the category by optimising for pricing and selection,” Bhatnagar added.

As brands look to capitalise on the festive demand, many are strategically leveraging e-commerce platforms to cater to the aspirational customers’ needs and reach the relatively less accessible customers in tier 2 cities and beyond.

“As a result, they look to partner deeply with the leading platforms to attract customers via lucrative discounts and offers available in the large-scale festive events,” he said.

This festive season, brands are looking to push premium stock keeping units (SKUs) at a discounted price, to encourage aspirational buying.

Quick commerce, which saw significant traction in 2023, is set to contribute approximately 8 per cent to overall e-commerce growth, up from 5 per cent last year.

Newer categories such as home and kitchen appliances are likely to get pushed aggressively on quick commerce platforms and could also help the platforms to boost their average order values and profitability, the report mentioned.

PLI Scheme to Drive Major Economic Boost

In the electronics sector, mobile phone manufacturing now accounts for half of India’s total output, with a 3 times increase in exports since FY 2020-21…reports Asian Lite News

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said that the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme has been a great success in terms of attracting investments and increasing exports, as actual investment is likely to reach Rs 2 lakh crore in the next year with 12 lakh jobs.

Engaging with the CEOs of over 140 PLI beneficiary companies in the national capital, Minister Goyal lauded them for bringing innovation, making India self-reliant in vital sectors and generating employment.

Actual investment of Rs 1.46 lakh crore has been realised under the PLI scheme (till August) and is likely to reach Rs 2 lakh crore in the next year or so, it was informed. This has resulted in production/sales worth Rs 12.50 lakh crore and employment generation of around 9.5 lakh (direct and indirect) which is expected to reach 12 lakh soon.

Exports have exceeded Rs 4 lakh crore, with substantial contributions from key sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals & food processing, it was informed during the interaction.

“PLI is one of the most successful programmes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched under the ‘Make in India’ initiative,” the minister told the media, urging the industry to focus on prioritising the production of high-quality goods to promote ‘Brand India’ through sustainable practices.

The minister also expressed gratitude to global champions for their dedication, significant investment in producing innovative products and contribution in generating employment through the PLI schemes. He further urged CEOs to focus on increasing domestic value addition in their products to make India self-reliant.

In the electronics sector, mobile phone manufacturing now accounts for half of India’s total output, with a 3 times increase in exports since FY 2020-21. The pharmaceutical industry has revitalised domestic production of bulk drugs and complex generics, reducing import dependence. In the automobile sector, global champions have rolled out electric vehicles, with substantial investment in the country. The medical devices industry has seen technology transfers for critical equipment like CT scanners, fostering local production.

Adesh Vashishta, CEO of Syrotech Networks, told IANS that Minister Goyal shared a lot of positive insights and talked about new schemes, the government’s vision, and how we can grow our businesses more effectively.

“We also felt encouraged knowing that the government is supporting us,” he said.

Sahan Singh Solanki, Senior General Manager at Meril Life Sciences Pvt Ltd, told IANS that PLI is a very positive step by PM Modi because we now create products that were previously unavailable in India.

“The PLI scheme is both effective and affordable. This is beneficial for the country as well as for the industry.

According to Dr Rajiv Chhibber, Vice President, Sahajanand Medical Technologies, what he found most noteworthy was the discussion about completely eliminating our import dependency, as mentioned by Minister Goyal.

“He also emphasised that the quality of medical devices and any product in the 14 or 15 sectors covered under the PLI scheme should be maintained. He promised us full support in this regard.”

Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), said that they initially planned to invest about Rs 800 crore and have so far invested more than Rs 1,100 crore. “With this investment, we are achieving a turnover of about Rs 15,000 crore in one year and are now looking towards the global market,” Mehta told IANS.

‘Ravindra Jadeja is a Complete Package’

Morne Morkel highlighted the devastating spin partnership Jadeja has formed with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, stating that the duo has been instrumental in dismantling opponents…reports Asian Lite News

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel lavished high praises on all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, calling him a “complete package” after the Indian all-rounder joined the prestigious 300-wicket club in Test cricket during the second Test against Bangladesh.

Morkel, speaking to the media after Day 4 of the match, extolled Jadeja’s incredible versatility and his impact on the game over the years. “For me, he’s a complete package. You know, he bats, he bowls, he’s a guy in the field that can make magic happen. There’s always a guy that you want in your team, and he’s done that for so many years for India,” said Morkel.

Jadeja, 35, reached the milestone when he dismissed Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud on Day 4, becoming the seventh Indian to claim 300 wickets in Test cricket. Achieving the double of 300 wickets and 3,000 runs in Tests, Jadeja is now the second fastest to this milestone, taking just 74 matches—two more than England legend Sir Ian Botham. “To join the 300-wicket club is special. He’s a guy that works on his game, and that is what you want to see,” Morkel continued.

The former South African fast bowler also highlighted the devastating spin partnership Jadeja has formed with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, stating that the duo has been instrumental in dismantling opponents. “These are guys that don’t give you any bad balls. You always (have to) find ways to score. If you face that from both ends, you’re going to work hard for your runs. And that’s why, as a partnership, they’ve been so successful,” Morkel noted.

The second Test between India and Bangladesh has been severely affected by rain, with two days of play washed out without a ball being bowled. However, Morkel was impressed by the way the Indian team maintained their readiness and focus during the delays.

“It’s never nice losing time and days. I knew the boys sitting around the hotel, that was sort of very frustrating. But the way the guys went off the field, still doing their gym work, looking after their bodies, was impressive to see,” Morkel said, adding that the team remained positive and intent on creating opportunities once play resumed.

Despite the lost time, India went all-out in their batting innings, reflecting a strategy to maximize their chances for a result. Morkel commended the Indian batters, especially the aggressive intent shown by players like Rishabh Pant, who adapted quickly to the situation.

“The way the boys went to the ball up-front, it was incredible to see. We created the pressure (with the ball) and brought wickets, and then to show the intent with the bat was awesome,” Morkel said. “It was always a part of our game plan to see how we can push this going forward, and how we can get the winning result.”

When their turn came to bowl, India made quick inroads, reducing Bangladesh to 26/w in their second innings. Morkel stressed that Test cricket is about creating sustained pressure, and India has mastered the art of doing so. “If you can do that for a long period, you’ll get results. I think there’s so much experience, these guys can sum up the conditions very well, so they know what’s important in that moment,” he explained.

Morkel also emphasized the professionalism of the Indian team, expressing his admiration for their dedication to fitness, recovery, and preparation. “For me, it’s so far, so enjoyable to see how professional they are and how they go about their daily life to perform,” Morkel said.

US opens 250k visa appointments for Indian travellers

The US Mission to India has already surpassed one million nonimmigrant visa applications for the second consecutive year…reports Asian Lite News

The US Embassy in India on Monday announced that it has opened an additional 250,000 visa appointments for Indian travellers, including tourists, skilled workers, and students.

“The recently released new slots will help hundreds of thousands of Indian applicants take timely interviews, facilitating the travel which is the backbone of the people-to-people ties that underpin the US-India relationship,” stated the US Mission to India.

It also detailed that the Indian Mission has already surpassed one million nonimmigrant visa applications for the second consecutive year.

“During our student visa season this summer, we continued to process record numbers, and all first-time student applicants were able to obtain an appointment at one of our five consular sections around India. We are now focused on bringing families together, connecting businesses, and facilitating tourism,” the statement added.

More than 1.2 million Indians have traveled to the United States year to date in 2024, a 35 per cent increase over the same period in 2023.

According to the US Mission, at least six million Indians already have a nonimmigrant visa to visit the United States, and each day, it issues thousands more.

The Embassy on Monday highlighted that the United States’ “partnership with India is stronger, closer, and more dynamic than any time in history” with the US Senate designating September 30 as a ‘US-India Partnership Day’, recognising the contribution of the two countries to one another and a relationship that continues to define the 21st century.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden set an ambitious goal to improve and expedite the visa process and I’m proud to say that we have delivered on that promise. Our consular teams at the embassy and four consulates work tirelessly to ensure that we meet the surging demand,” US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti said recently.

Last week, during his visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the Indian government will open two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles.

“Last year, I announced the opening of a new Indian consulate in Seattle. I sought your suggestions for two additional Consulates. India has now decided to open two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles,” remarked PM Modi while interacting with the Indian diaspora in New York’s Nassau Coliseum.

Goyal meets entrepreneurs in New York

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, met with young Indian-origin CEOs and entrepreneurs in New York, emphasising the reforms introduced under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership that have driven India’s growth over the past decade.

In a post shared on X, Goyal wrote, “Great discussions with young CEOs and entrepreneurs of Indian origin in New York. Highlighted how key reforms under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership have driven India’s growth over the last decade, offering unmatched opportunities for businesses.”

He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to shared prosperity in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence, and sustainable technologies.

He stated, “Invited American companies with expertise in high-tech manufacturing to ‘Make in India’ for the world. Reaffirmed our commitment to shared prosperity and collaboration, particularly in advanced manufacturing, robotics, AI, and sustainable technologies.”

The Union Minister also met with Chirag Patel and Chintu Patel, Co-CEOs of Amneal Pharmaceuticals, to explore ways to leverage India’s existing pharmaceutical ecosystem.

Sharing pictures on X, Goyal wrote, “Held a meeting with Chintu Patel, Co-CEO, and Chirag Patel, President and Co-CEO of Amneal Pharma, a global pharmaceutical company with a presence in five locations in India. We explored ways to further leverage India’s existing pharma ecosystem for high-end R&D, including biologics, enhancing manufacturing capabilities, and building a robust supply-chain network to serve the world.”

Earlier, Goyal noted that the “Make in India” initiative has significantly contributed to the positive trends in the latest gross value added (GVA) figures.

When asked about the initiative’s impact, Goyal told ANI, “I think it’s huge because this annual survey of industries reflects the growth in the manufacturing sector.”

He added, “The fact that we have now surpassed pre-pandemic levels, and that growth continues in a sustained manner in industries such as basic metals, coke and refined petroleum products, food production, chemical industries, and motor vehicles, shows that India is a combination of manufacturing and consumption-led growth. In other parts of the developed world, growth is largely consumption-led.” (ANI)

India’s ‘1st polling booth’ near LoC cries for help

over 400 voters from Seemari village demand basic necessities such as better road access, free electricity, immediate healthcare services, increased ration supplies and mobile network…reports Asian Lite News

A day ahead of third and final phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, over 400 voters from Seemari village, home to India’s “first polling booth” along Line of Control (LoC), demand basic necessities such as better road access, free electricity, immediate healthcare services, increased ration supplies and mobile network.

Residents are urging political parties and local authorities to address these urgent issues to improve their quality of life. They express concern that leaders forget about them after elections, noting that the only support they receive in times of need–whether for employment, food, medicine, or other essentials–comes from the Indian Army deployed along the LoC.

In Seemari village, a total of 443 voters will participate, comprising 226 men and 217 women.

Mohammad Sharif, a resident of the village, said, “This is Seemari village, the last one on the India-Pakistan border, and it has India’s first polling booth. We continue to vote, but we lack roads, hospitals, electricity, and stores. We have been facing many challenges. Voting is our right, and while we participate, the government needs to address our needs. Leaders come to seek our votes but often forget us after elections. Although the government support us, the funds rarely reach us; these funds seem to disappear along the way. Some leaders have visited and spoken with us, but they haven’t made any commitments to meet our demands.”

Another local Ali Asgar said that the village lacks road facilities, and three nearby villages–Phagwan, Trutihaji, and Kadhama–also have no road connectivity.

“When someone falls ill, they are carried on a cot to reach a nearby road to avail vehicle since it can’t access the area. The sick person has to pay Rs 1,500 for a reserved vehicle from the nearest road to get to the Tangdhar hospital. Although there is a clinic here, it has no medicine, and the roads are in poor condition. We spend over Rs 500 on electricity (monthly), but we only receive four hours of supply each day. During elections, we exercise our right to vote, yet we see no benefits from it. Leaders promise us roads and electricity, but nothing materializes. We receive a 5 kg ration on a monthly basis, which isn’t enough to last a month. This is the last remote village with over 400 voters, and we also lack a mobile network and job opportunities,” he said.

Another resident of the Seemari village Naseer Awan added that leaders come here to seek votes and make numerous promises, but they don’t return for next five years after elections are over.

“We have no way of knowing where they are in the meantime. The government does provide some support for our welfare, but we don’t receive everything we need. Living on the border of India and Pakistan, our only assistance comes from the Indian Army. We owe our survival to them; they provide employment and help our people during illnesses or emergencies,” he said.

He asserted further that without the Army here, they would struggle to survive.

“Although there is a hospital, it lacks medicine. We spend Rs 150 per person to travel to Tangdhar (19 km from Seemari) for medical treatment, which is difficult for us as we are very poor and often don’t even have Rs 10. We also face electricity issues and can’t pay our bills. If people in Delhi, where jobs are plentiful, can have free electricity, why can’t we? I urge the government to grant us free electricity. While the central government has good intentions, local leaders fail to deliver these essential services,” Nasir Awan, the resident of Seemari village said.

On October 1, voters in 40 assembly constituencies across Jammu and Kashmir will participate in the third and final phase of the ongoing elections. Comprehensive arrangements have been made to ensure smooth and hassle-free voting.
