US lawmakers push to halt China science pact renewal

The extension comes despite repeated requests from Congress to either suspend the agreement or implement stronger safeguards to protect US national security, human rights, and intellectual property. …reports Asian Lite News

Chairman John Moolenaar of the Select Committee of Chinese Communist Party (SCCP) and his colleagues have strongly criticised the Joe Biden administration’s decision to extend the US-China Science and Technology Agreement (STA) for another five years.

The extension comes despite repeated requests from Congress to either suspend the agreement or implement stronger safeguards to protect US national security, human rights, and intellectual property.

In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Moolenaar and his fellow lawmakers argue that renewing the STA in the final days of the current administration represents an effort to “tie the hands” of the incoming administration. They assert that this move would limit the new leadership’s ability to either exit the agreement or negotiate a better deal for the American people.

The letter reads, “We urge you to immediately suspend efforts to renew the US-PRC STA before January 20, 2025. Suppose the Biden Administration is confident their new agreement with the PRC will adequately protect US national security. In that case, they should have no problem making the case for renewal to the incoming administration.”

Earlier this year, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the “Science and Technology Agreement Enhanced Congressional Notification Act,” introduced by Representative Andy Barr.

The bill, which is still pending law, would require a 15-day notification period before any STA renewal and mandate the inclusion of explicit protections for human rights, as well as restrictions on dual-use research, which can have both civilian and military applications. Lawmakers said that the Biden Administration has ignored these safeguards, emphasising concerns over US intellectual property and security.

Moolenaar and his colleagues argue that the administration’s failure to include such protections demonstrates a disregard for Congress’s articulated concerns and raises further questions about the impact of continued US-China scientific collaboration.

The STA extension comes at a time of growing bipartisan scrutiny of US-China relations, particularly around issues of national security and technology transfer. Many critics argue that scientific exchanges with China could contribute to the development of advanced technologies with military applications, potentially undermining US security interests.

As the Biden Administration moves forward with the STA extension, lawmakers are calling for greater transparency and accountability, stressing that any renewal should be delayed until after January 20, 2025, to allow the next administration the opportunity to review and potentially renegotiate the agreement. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar along with the Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova Mihai Popsoi jointly inaugurated the Embassy of Moldova in Delhi on Sunday.

In his speech, the EAM thanked Moldova for providing crucial help during ‘Operation Ganga’ in evacuating Indian students and also expressed confidence in the growth of ties between the two countries.

In his speech, the External Affairs Minister noted that the inauguration of the embassy serves as a significant milestone in the relationship between India and Moldova. “Every time an embassy opens here, I know we’ve done something right in our foreign policy. Whether it’s a mission opening here or one of our embassies or consulates opening abroad, I see that as a reflection of India’s growing engagement with the world”, he said.

Jaishankar noted that the inauguration of the embassy is a statement of a deeper relationship with Moldova and reflects the shared commitment of the two nations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992.

He noted that India and Moldova have supported each other on the global stage in multilateral institutions and international challenges like climate change and sustainable development.

Calling the relationship between the two “very comfortable and trusting bilateral ties, the EAM thanked Moldova in extending help during Operation Ganga to evacuate a large number of stranded Indian students during the Ukraine crisis. “I want to say today that India will never forget it”, the EAM said.

Jaishankar highlighted that Moldova is a second home to about 2000 Indian students. Addressing a few of them who were present during the inauguration, EAM said that they embody the partnership between the two countries. “You help to bridge cultures, and you are actually forging a lasting friendship between our countries”, EAM added.

“We should also recognise that there is a shared vision of a world between us; a world that values peace, understanding, and cooperation. I believe that the establishment of this embassy is a new chapter that will further our partnership. As we celebrate its inauguration, let us renew our commitment to build that world where the future is one of convergences and shared values. I’m confident that this embassy will become a beacon of friendship” EAM concluded. (ANI)

The visit underscores the strong maritime relations between the two countries conforming to the shared vision of India-Indonesia Maritime Cooperation in the Indo Pacific…reports Asian Lite News

India’s Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi is on a four day official visit to Indonesia from December 15-18, 2024 for discussions to enhance the level of operational collaboration between the naval forces of the two countries. The four-day visit is part of ongoing efforts to further consolidate bilateral defence relations between India and Indonesia, in line with the deepening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

During the visit, Admiral Tripathi is scheduled to engage in bilateral discussions with top level Indonesian Government and defence officials including Lt Gen Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin (retd), Defence Minister of Indonesia, General Agus Subiyanto, Commander of Indonesian Armed Forces and Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of Staff of Indonesian Navy.

According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the discussions are expected to cover a broad spectrum of defence cooperation areas, particularly maritime security, joint training initiatives, and exploring avenues for further strengthening the operational collaboration between the two navies.

The visit underscores the strong maritime relations between the two countries conforming to the shared vision of India-Indonesia Maritime Cooperation in the Indo Pacific, the MoD noted in a statement issued on Saturday (December 14, 2024).

The existing maritime cooperation between the Indian and Indonesian Navies encompasses a range of activities, including joint exercises, port visits, and training initiatives aimed at building capacity. Joint military exercises between the two sides include Samudra Shakti (Navy) and Garuda Shakti (Army Special Forces). Currently, the 43rd India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol is underway from December 10-18, 2024, along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

Maritime Security Cooperation a Key Pillar of Bilateral Partnership

India and Indonesia have strengthened their ties across a wide range of sectors since the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018. Recent years have seen robust collaboration in defence, trade, investment, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Maritime security cooperation, in particular, has emerged as a central pillar of this partnership, with both nations working together to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

India and Indonesia agreed to a Shared Vision for Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Southeast Asian nation in May 2018. The objective was to harness the opportunities and to meet the challenges together as Comprehensive Strategic Partners.

As part of this vision, the two sides agreed to the following:

    Promoting Maritime Safety and Security.

    Enhancing Trade and Investment Cooperation.

Promoting sustainable development of marine resources.

Expanding cooperation in disaster risk management.

    Fostering tourism and cultural exchanges.

Strengthening academic, science and technology cooperation.

Significantly, 2024 marks the tenth anniversary of India’s ‘Act East’ policy, which has sought to enhance India’s engagement with ASEAN countries, including Indonesia. Under this policy, India has actively pursued strategic and economic cooperation with its eastern neighbors, with Indonesia playing an important role in India’s Indo-Pacific strategy. Ustad Zakir Hussain’s contributions to both traditional and contemporary music have left an indelible mark on the global music landscape….reports Asian Lite News

The music world mourns the loss of Ustad Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla virtuoso, who passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, in San Francisco, US. He was 73. Widely regarded as one of the greatest percussionists of all time, Ustad Zakir Hussain was not only a master of his craft but also a cultural bridge-builder who elevated Indian classical music to international acclaim.

His contributions to both traditional and contemporary music have left an indelible mark on the global music landscape. Born on March 9, 1951, in Mumbai, Zakir Hussain inherited his talent and passion for tabla from his father, the iconic Ustad Alla Rakha.

Demonstrating exceptional promise from a young age, Zakir Hussain began performing by the time he was a teenager. His unmatched skill and innate rhythm soon catapulted him to prominence in the Indian classical music world.

Zakir Hussain redefined the role of the tabla, transforming it from a mere supporting instrument to a central figure in performances. His mastery of intricate rhythms and his ability to convey profound emotion through his music made him an iconic figure in the world of classical music.

Zakir Hussain was a trailblazer in blending Indian classical music with global genres, creating groundbreaking collaborations that expanded the reach of his art. He partnered with legends like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan in traditional settings, while his groundbreaking collaborations with international musicians such as John McLaughlin in ‘Shakti’ and Mickey Hart in ‘Planet Drum’ pushed boundaries.

The ‘Planet Drum’ album earned him a Grammy Award and showcased his extraordinary ability to merge cultural rhythms into a harmonious global sound. Over a career spanning almost six decades, Zakir Hussain received numerous prestigious awards, including:

Padma Shri (1988) and Padma Bhushan (2002) from the Indian government, 4 Grammy Awards for his contribution to world music, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, recognising his excellence in Indian classical music, the National Heritage Fellowship, the highest award for traditional artists in the US.

Despite these accolades, Zakir Hussain remained grounded. In several media interviews and winning speeches, he expressed viewing himself as a lifelong student of music. Beyond the stage, Ustad Zakir Hussain dedicated much of his time to nurturing future generations of musicians.

He taught extensively at institutions like the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Francisco and conducted workshops around the world. The news of his demise has triggered an outpouring of tributes from leaders, artists, and fans worldwide.

Musicians and admirers have shared stories of his profound impact on their lives, celebrating his remarkable journey and mourning his loss. Zakir Hussain’s passing leaves a void in the world of music that cannot be filled. His artistry not only transcended borders but also brought people together from all corners of the world.

Survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola, and daughters, Anisa and Isabella, his music will continue to inspire countless musicians and listeners. The beats of his tabla will echo in the hearts of millions for generations to come. (ANI)

Stop whining about EVMs, ally Omar advises Congress

Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah on Sunday advised the grand old party to not keep whining about the EVMs and at the same time, continue fighting elections….reports Asian Lite News

Congress party seems to be finding itself isolated within the INDIA bloc over its obstinacy and ‘big brother’ attitude in cornering the Centre. First, the party failed to garner allies’ support on raising issues in Parliament and now its claims of ‘biased and fixed’ Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has been junked by its own ally – National Conference (NC).

Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah on Sunday advised the grand old party to not keep whining about the EVMs and at the same time, continue fighting elections.

“The same EVMs gave you 99 seats. You celebrated that victory, but then you go on complaining about the same when you lose elections. You can’t be selective in blaming the EVMs,” he said.

Omar’s rejection of Congress’ claims comes on the backdrop of the latter’s demand for reversal from EVM voting to ballot papers. The Congress president has already given a call for a bigger movement for shifting from EVMs to ballot papers.

Dismissing the claims as ‘opportunism’, Omar said that the party should take a consistent stand and if it has a problem with the EVMs, it should either boycott or stay away from the elections.

“Merely blaming the EVMs for losing elections is not the right approach,” he said.

The BJP was quick to react to Omar’s criticism of the Congress leadership. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya took to X and said that Rahul Gandhi was increasingly looking like a loser, with whom nobody wants to associate with.

“Now, Omar Abdullah throws the Congress and Rahul Gandhi under the bus, on the EVM issue… EVMs can’t be good when Congress wins and bad when they lose… Rahul Gandhi is increasingly looking like a loser no one wants to stand with,” he wrote on X.

NC’s distancing with the Congress began soon after the Jammu and Kashmir elections. After winning the elections by a decisive margin, Omar had expressed the party’s displeasure with top Congress brass over leaving the canvassing to NC alone.

Notably, the increasing divide within the INDIA bloc has been visible over the past few days. TMC supremo recently endorsed demands of ‘leadership change’ at the top and also didn’t hesitate in giving her consent to lead the Opposition alliance.

The rumblings within the INDIA bloc got bigger as it also got support from other allies like RJD and a few others.

Post-poll loss, Hindutva back in focus for Thackeray’s Shiv Sena

Uddhav Thackeray recounted how a delegation of SS (UBT) members of Parliament had sought an appointment on Thursday to meet with the PM and discuss Bangladesh Hindus issue, but they were not given time…reports Asian Lite News

Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take note of the severe atrocities being perpetrated on the Hindus in Bangladesh and immediately intervene in the matter.

“Why is the government silent on the atrocities on the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh? The Opposition has been raising the issue in Parliament for the past few days on the injustice being meted out to the minority Hindus there, but nothing is being done by India,” Thackeray said on Friday.

Speaking to media persons, he said that a couple of months ago, when the Bangladesh cricket team had come to India (Sep-Oct), Aditya Thackeray had demanded that we shouldn’t play with them, but the government kept mum and did nothing about it.

“We want to know why the PM is not saying anything on this. Hindus are being targeted daily, the ISKCON Temple was burnt, their leaders were arrested and subjected to action, but we are silent,” Thackeray pointed out.

Taking a jibe, Thackeray said that “on behalf of all the Hindus in the country”, he was appealing to the PM that just as he ((Modi) had taken action in the Ukraine crisis, he should do the same in Bangladesh to ensure that the attacks on Hindus stop there.

“There is no point in making slogans like ‘batenge to katenge, fatenge, marenge,’ etc here. There’s no need to indulge in showing off such bravado where there are no problems, but act decisively where Hindus are undergoing tortures (Bangladesh),” said Thackeray.

He recounted how a delegation of SS (UBT) members of Parliament had sought an appointment on Thursday to meet with the PM and discuss Bangladesh Hindus issue, but they were not given time. Now, Thackeray has said that the SS (UBT) will submit a letter to PM Modi as he may be very busy, he has to travel around the world and make speeches and probably may not have noticed the problems of Hindus in Bangladesh.

“The ex-PM of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina came to India where she is safe. But what about the fate and future of poor Hindus in Bangladesh facing violence? Hindutva is not just about seeking votes by instilling fear among the Hindus, but to speak up for their cause and the PM must look into it now,” demanded Thackeray.

He reiterated that the Bharatiya Janata Party government did not care for the injustices done to our own people in Manipur state, so it has not really understood the sufferings of the Hindus in Bangladesh, but now the Centre must spell out its role.

Indian nationals return from crisis-hit Syria

India has evacuated from Syria all its nationals who wished to return home after rebel forces overthrew President Bashar Assad’s authoritarian government in the Arab nation…reports Asian Lite News

A batch of Indian nationals, who returned to their homeland on Saturday after being evacuated from crisis-hit Syria, recalled the panic situation they faced in that country but praised the Indian Embassy there for being in “constant touch” with them.

Some of the returnees, soon after landing at the Delhi airport late evening, shared with media their experiences of the last week.

Sunil Dutt, a native of Chandigarh, and a mechanical engineer, alleged that there were some “anti-social elements” too in the streets who were also “looting stuff”.

It was a very bad situation and sights of fire and sounds of bombarding made it worse, he said.

However, the Indian Embassy was in “constant touch with us” and its personnel” asked us to be calm, not open doors” to ensure safety, Dutt told reporters at Delhi airport.

India has evacuated from Syria all its nationals who wished to return home after rebel forces overthrew President Bashar Assad’s authoritarian government in the Arab nation.

The Syrian government collapsed on Sunday as the rebels seized control of capital Damascus after capturing several other prominent cities and towns.

“We have evacuated all Indian nationals in Syria who wished to return home following recent developments in that country. So far, 77 Indian nationals from Syria have been evacuated,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday during his weekly briefing.

The Indian Embassy personnel in Damascus accompanied them to the border, after which our mission in Lebanon received them and facilitated their immigration, he said.

Sachit Kapoor, a resident of Greater Noida, was also among the Indians who arrived in Delhi on Saturday. “We were in Syria for nearly seven months. The situation worsened on December 7. We were shifted to Damascus city and then we saw fire and bombarding all around. It was a panic situation. We were a team of 11 at a luxury hotel. Situation got worsened. People were running amok in the streets, some looting also,” he said.

Because of the Indian Embassy in Syria, “we were shifted to Lebanon very smoothly and we faced no issues”, Kapoor recalled. The electrical engineer said in Lebanon too, “our lodging and food facility was very good”. He thanked the Ministry of External Affairs for the assistance rendered to the affected Indians, who wish to return to home country.

Ratan Lal, another Indian national who arrived at the Delhi airport on Saturday, said: “I have been in Syria for the last five years.” When the situation got worsened, “we were called to Damascus and there lodged at a hotel. And, then visa was given, and then we went to the airport for the onward journey,” he recalled.

Lal said the situation was very bad and added that his family members told him to return somehow. Chetan Lal, another returnee who hails from Gurgaon district of Haryana, said that he was working in Syria for the last 10 years in a glass bottle-making company.

“For three days, we were lodged at Damascus. The Lebanese and Syrian Embassy also cooperated with us a lot in aiding us in the return journey,” he said. The Indian Embassy in Syria continues to function, Jaiswal said on Friday.

Earlier on Monday, India called for a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process to bring stability in that country.

Recounting how the embassy helped him, an Indian national, Sunil Dutt, said, “On last Thursday we received a call from the Embassy that according to recent development, things are getting worse so immediately we have to evacuate the country. We came to Damascus and were in constant touch with the Indian embassy. Things immediately changed in Damascus. On Sunday rebels took over, and people were looting the shops and vehicles. eople from the Embassy were in constant touch with us. They told us to stay calm and take safety precautions. We were very comfortable. Today we are safe because of Modi ji. Under the direction of Modi ji the MEA has executed and corporated very well.”

Another Indian national Ratan Lal said that he had been living in Syria for the past 5 years. He said that the Indian embassy supported them and provided them food, and accommodation.

“I have been there for the past 5 years, Embassy contacted us and asked us to come to Damascus. Embassy supported us, and gave us a room. Modi ji has worked well,” he said.

Chetan Lal, who was among those who returned from Syria said that the embassy provided him with a safe residence in Damascus as well as in Lebanon via which Indian nationals returned to the national capital.

“What happened now in Syria has never happened before. The embassy contacted us and took us to the safe residence. We came to India vis Lebanon. We stayed in Lebanon for 4 days. We are very happy with Modi Ji, We couldn’t have done anything, the embassy worked well. We are very happy to be back in India,” Chetan Lal said.

Earlier on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that 77 Indian nationals had been evacuated from strife torn Syria so far. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Indian embassies in Middle East region are in touch with Indians there and will help them if need arises. The spokesperson also said that there is no need for evacuation from any other country as of now.

Govt to table One Nation One Election bill in LS

Based on the recommendations of a committee chaired by former president Ram Nath Kovind, the Bills set out the process for moving towards simultaneous elections to Parliament and state legislatures..reports Asian Lite News

After listing two Bills that would enable simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and Assemblies of states and Union Territories for Monday, the Government has postponed their introduction in the Lok Sabha until later this week.

The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment Bill) 2024 were included in the list of business for Monday in the Lok Sabha. However, the two Bills were off the revised list of business.

The Government has decided to introduce the Bills later this week, perhaps on Tuesday, sources aware of the development said. Discussion and voting on the supplementary demands for grants for 2024-2025 and the introduction and passing of the appropriation Bills by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman are included in the revised list of business in the Lok Sabha for Monday.

The Rajya Sabha is also scheduled to start a discussion on 75 years of the Constitution on Monday, a source said.

The cabinet approved the two Bills last week. Based on the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on ONE NATION ONE ELECTION chaired by former president Ram Nath Kovind, the Bills set out the process for moving towards simultaneous elections.

The President would have to notify an “appointed date” on the first sitting of the Lok Sabha after a general election and any Legislative Assembly elected after that date would have its term curtailed to end with that of the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Arjun Ram Meghwal will also move the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 for leave to introduce a Bill further to amend the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. Also to introduce to Bill.

Several opposition leaders have questioned the One Nation One election proposal saying it was impractical and an attack on federalism

Senior Congress leader and RS MP Digvijay Singh said, ‘One Nation, One Election’ said that if a state government falls in six months or loses its majority, will the state have to remain without a government for the rest of the 4.5 years.”Elections cannot be postponed for more than 6 months in any state. If the One Nation One Election is being introduced and the government in a state falls in 6 months, the no-confidence motion is passed, will we remain without a government for 4.5 years? This is not possible in this country… Earlier, governments used to complete their full term of 5 years, but today some governments fall in 2.5 years and somewhere they fall in 3 years.”

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh demanded that the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, asserting that the bill undermines democracy.

“The bill will be presented in Parliament, and we want it to be referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which will hold discussions on it. The Indian National Congress’s position was clarified last year by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, who sent a four-page letter to former President Ram Nath Kovind’s committee on One Nation, One Election, stating that we oppose the bill,” Ramesh told ANI.

On December 12, the ‘One Nation One Election’ bill was approved by the Union Cabinet paving the way for its introduction in Parliament. However, before its introduction in the Parliament, the bill initiated debate between the ruling and opposition parties.

Several parties of the INDIA bloc opposed the bill while the BJP-led NDA alliance parties welcomed this bill, saying, it would save time and lay the groundwork for unified elections across the country.

Notably, in September this year, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which aims to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, along with urban body and panchayat polls, within a span of 100 days.
