Clintons urge voters to remain involved in public service

Voters dejected by the presidential election results need to find a way to give back and remain involved, Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Clinton presidential library.

The former president urged audience members in a packed theater to remain engaged and find ways to communicate with those they disagree with despite a divisive political time. The two spoke about a month after former President Donald Trump’s win over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election.

“We’re just passing through, and we all need to just calm down and do something that builds people up instead of tears them down,” Bill Clinton said.

Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state who was defeated by Trump in the 2016 election, said she understands the next couple of years are going to be challenging for voters who don’t agree with the decisions being made.

“In addition to staying involved and staying aware, it’s important to find something that makes you feel good about the day because if you’re in a constant state of agitation about our political situation, it is really going to shorten your life,” she said.

The Clintons spoke during a panel discussion with journalist Laura Ling, who the former president helped free in 2009 when she was detained in North Korea with another journalist. The event was held as part of a weekend of activities marking the 20th anniversary of the Clinton Presidential Library’s opening in Little Rock. The library is preparing to undergo an update of its exhibits and an expansion that will include Hillary Clinton’s personal archives.

Hillary Clinton said part of the goal is to modernize the facility and expand it to make it a more open, inviting place for people for convene and make connections.

When asked about advice he would give for people disappointed by the election results, Bill Clinton said people need to continue working toward bringing people together and improving others’ lives.

“If that’s the way you keep score, then you ought to be trying to run up the score,” he said. “Not lamenting the fact that somebody else is winning a different game because they keep score a different way.”

“And in addition, figure out what we can do to win again,” Hillary Clinton added, eliciting cheers.

The program featured a panel discussion with cast members of the hit NBC show “The West Wing” and former Clinton White House staffers.

The weekend amounted to a reunion of former Clinton White House staffers, supporters and close friends, including former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and adviser James Carville.

McAuliffe said he and Carville ate Friday at Doe’s Eat Place, a downtown restaurant that was popular with Clinton aides and reporters during Clinton’s 1992 White House run. He said he viewed the library and its planned expansion as important for the future.

“This is not only about the past, but it’s more importantly about the future,” McAuliffe said. “We just went through a very tough election, and people are all saying we’ve got to get back to the Clinton model.”

Assad’s fall a historic act of justice, says Biden

The president also acknowledged that the latest development also brings uncertainty and risk. He pledged that the US would work Syrian stakeholders to help stabilise the country …reports Asian Lite News

President Joe Biden has hailed the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, calling it a “fundamental act of justice.”

He further said that the fall of the regime is a moment of historic opportunity for the Syrian people to rebuild their nation. Biden made the remarks on the latest developments in Syria.

“After 13 years of civil war in Syria, more than half a century of brutal authoritarian rule by Basher Assad, his father before him, rebel forces have forced Assad to resign his office and flee the country,” Biden said.

“At long last, the Assad regime has fallen, this regime brutalized and tortured and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice, it’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country,” he added.

However, Biden acknowledged that the latest development also brings uncertainty and risk. He pledged that the United States would work with its partners and Syrian stakeholders to help stabilise the country and support its transition.

“It’s also a moment of risk and uncertainty as we all turn to the question of what comes next. The United States will work with our partners and the stakeholders in Syria to help them seize an opportunity to manage the risk,” Biden said.

Describing the US policy on Syria, Biden said that his administration made it clear that sanctions on Assad would remain in place unless he would end Civil War.

He said, “Over the past four years, my administration pursued a clear principal policy towards Syria. First, we made clear from the start that sanctions on Assad would remain in place unless he engaged seriously in a political process to end the Civil War as outlined by the UN Security Council resolution passing in 2015 but Assad refused so we carried out a comprehensive sanction program against him and all those responsible for atrocities against the Syrian people.”

“Second, we maintained our military presence in Syria to counter ISIS, to counter the support of local partners as well on the ground,” Biden added.

Following the latest developments in Syria, Biden pledged US support to Syria by engaging with all Syrian groups to establish an “independent, sovereign Syria.”

“We now see new opportunities opening up for the people of Syria and for the entire region. Looking ahead, the United States will do the following. First, we will support Syria’s neighbours including Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Israel. Should any threat arise from Syria during this period of transition I will speak with leaders of the region in the coming days. Second, we will help ensure stability in eastern Syria…,” Biden said.

He added, “Third, we will engage with all Syrian groups to establish a transition away from the Assad regime toward independent, sovereign Syria with a new constitution, a new government that serves all Syrians. This process will be determined by the Syrian people themselves and the United States will do whatever we can to support them including through humanitarian relief to help restore Syria after more than a decade of war and generations of brutality by the Assad family and finally, we will remain vigilant to make no mistake. Some of the rebel groups that took down Assad have their own grim record of terrorism and human rights abuses. We’ve taken note of statements by the leaders of these rebel groups in recent days and they’re saying the right things now but as they take on greater responsibility, we will assess not just their words but their actions.”

Notably, the situation in Syria remains a focal point for all the other nations after Syrian rebels on Sunday entered Damascus, forcing President Bashar al-Assad to flee for an unknown destination, ending his over two-decade rule in the country.

    ‘Historic opportunity’

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on people of Syria to seize a “historic opportunity” for a stable and peaceful future, following the sudden fall of the “dictatorial regime” of president Bashar al-Assad.

The situation in Syria remains a focal point for all the neighbouring nations after Syrian rebels on Sunday entered the capital Damascus, forcing Assad to flee, ending his over two-decade rule in the country.

The UN Secretary-General also emphasised that the future of Syria should be determined by its people.

In a statement released on Sunday, Guterres said, “After 14 years of brutal war and the fall of the dictatorial regime, today the people of Syria can seize a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future. The future of Syria is a matter for the Syrians to determine, and my Special Envoy will be working with them towards that end.”

Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to helping Syrians build a country based on reconciliation, justice, and prosperity. (ANI)

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has announced the creation of the Ministry of Family and the transformation of the Ministry of Community Development into the Ministry of Community Empowerment.

The reshuffle reflects the UAE’s commitment to strengthening family and community structures, ensuring their pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future.

The newly established Ministry of Family will be headed by Her Excellency Sana bint Mohammad Suhail, a seasoned leader with extensive expertise in family welfare, early childhood development, and supporting People of Determination.

“This ministry will focus on legislation, policies, and programs to address family cohesion, fertility rates, and support systems,” said His Highness Sheikh Mohammed. He emphasized that families are the cornerstone of the nation’s progress, underscoring the shared responsibility of individuals, organizations, and the government in empowering them.

Key responsibilities of the Ministry of Family include:

    • Developing national programs to increase family formation and fertility rates.

    • Providing marriage support, parental training, and family care services.

    • Protecting vulnerable groups, including People of Determination, orphans, and senior citizens.

    • Enhancing child welfare through early childhood development programs and protection measures.

The Ministry of Community Development has been elevated to the Ministry of Community Empowerment, under the leadership of Her Excellency Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrui. This revamped ministry will pioneer a comprehensive empowerment model to foster self-reliance and economic participation for low-income families while strengthening the role of the third sector.

    Key initiatives include:

    • Designing integrated social support systems and pathways to financial independence.

    • Regulating and empowering non-profit organizations to align with national priorities.

    • Promoting volunteerism and social innovation across diverse sectors.

    • Overseeing licensing and regulation of non-Muslim houses of worship.

These transformative steps reflect the UAE’s vision of empowering its people and fostering inclusive societal growth.

  • Arab League Urges Syrians to Uphold Peace

Arab League Urges Syrians to Uphold Peace

This appeal comes at a pivotal moment as Syria grapples with political upheaval, societal divisions, and the fallout of a prolonged and devastating conflict….reports Asian Lite News

The Arab League has issued a fervent call for unity and dialogue among Syrians, urging all factions to embrace tolerance and prioritise national interests as the country navigates a critical transitional phase.

In a statement, the League’s General Secretariat emphasised the necessity of safeguarding Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty while rejecting foreign interference, which it deems antithetical to the Arab consensus on the nation’s future.

This appeal comes at a pivotal moment as Syria grapples with political upheaval, societal divisions, and the fallout of a prolonged and devastating conflict.

“This critical phase demands responsibility, dialogue, and a commitment to the rights of all components of Syrian society,” the statement said.

The League called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging Syrians to lay down arms to preserve lives and resources and to work collectively toward an inclusive and secure political transition.

The Arab League urged regional and international actors to bolster stability in Syria by lifting sanctions that hinder economic recovery and humanitarian aid. The League reiterated its dedication to assisting Syria in reclaiming its historic stature as a beacon of culture and civilisation.

The international community, meanwhile, remains deeply concerned about the situation in Syria. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the need for inclusive political processes that reflect the aspirations of all Syrians. In a statement today, Guterres reaffirmed the importance of restoring Syria’s sovereignty and unity while calling for a peaceful transition to representative governance. “The future of Syria must be decided by Syrians, through a process that respects diversity, justice, and human rights,” he stated.

Special Envoy Geir Otto Pedersen has been tasked with engaging stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition. Guterres underscored the importance of respecting international laws, including the protection of diplomatic premises, during this turbulent period.

In a dramatic turn of events, Bashar al-Assad and his family have reportedly sought asylum in Moscow, ending speculation about the former president’s whereabouts. Russian state media confirmed that Assad had left Damascus as rebel forces advanced into the capital. The Kremlin has granted him and his family refuge, citing humanitarian grounds.

This development marks a significant moment in Syria’s conflict. Russia, a staunch ally of Assad throughout the civil war, has begun engaging with Syrian opposition leaders, who have pledged to ensure the safety of Russian military and diplomatic installations in Syria.

The power vacuum left by Assad’s departure has raised questions about Syria’s future governance. UK Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, described the situation as both a relief and a source of uncertainty. Speaking on Sky News, McFadden noted that the ousting of the Assad regime is a setback for its allies, Russia and Iran.

However, McFadden expressed caution regarding the new ruling faction, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group with historical ties to al-Qaeda. “The group claims to respect citizens’ rights and minority protections, but its record is far from reassuring,” McFadden said, adding that the UK government is evaluating HTS’s terrorist designation.

Neighbouring Egypt has also called for unity among Syrians. In a statement, Cairo emphasised the importance of fostering harmony and restoring Syria’s regional and international role. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, pledging support for reconstruction efforts and the safe return of refugees.

Egypt’s call mirrors broader regional efforts to stabilise Syria, with a focus on alleviating the prolonged suffering of its people. The international community has been urged to prioritise humanitarian aid, rebuild national institutions, and create conditions for a stable and prosperous Syria.

Despite the efforts of the Arab League, the United Nations, and regional actors, Syria’s future remains uncertain. The complex interplay of domestic and international interests, combined with the challenges of establishing a representative government, underscores the difficulties ahead.

The Arab League’s appeal for unity and dialogue serves as a reminder of the stakes involved. “This is a historic moment for Syria,” the League’s statement concluded. “Only through reconciliation, justice, and mutual respect can the Syrian people rebuild their nation and secure a lasting peace.”

As Syrians confront the immense task of rebuilding their country, the international community must balance cautious optimism with vigilance, ensuring that promises of peace translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

King revokes honours of Ranger, Bhanot

Action was taken against Bhanot after a website 5 Pillars raised complaints about tweets to the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Charity Commission…reports Asian Lite News

Two British-Indian Tory (Conservative) peers Rami Ranger and Hindu Council UK managing trustee Anil Bhanot were stripped of their honours by the King. Ranger was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), while Bhanot received the Officer of the Order (OBE).

According to an official notice published in the London Gazette, “THE KING has directed that the appointment of Raminder Singh, Baron RANGER to be a Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated December 31, 2015, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.” The same order was issued for Bhanot who was appointed as OBE on June 12,  2010.

Action was taken against Bhanot after a website 5 Pillars raised complaints about tweets to the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Charity Commission. He allegedly tweeted ‘Islamophobic’ tweets where he was condemning violence against Bangladeshi Hindus in 2021.

Meanwhile, Ranger lost his honour after complaints filed by the organization Sikhs for Justice which is banned in India. He was also accused of harassing and bullying an Indian-origin journalist Poonam Joshi on social media.

Ranger and Bhanot criticised the revocation of their honours, calling it an attack on freedom of expression. Bhanot was initially awarded the OBE for his contributions to community cohesion.

He stated that when the committee contacted him in January, he hoped the issue would be resolved, but that did not happen.

Lord Ranger said he was devastated to have been stripped of the honour and would explore various legal avenues to challenge the ‘unjust’ decision, according to BBC.

A spokesperson for Lord Ranger reportedly said the peer did not commit any crime or broke any law. They also added that many who have their awards revoked this way were associated with serious crimes.

The spokesperson also called the move a ‘sad indictment’ of the honour system, and that it was curtailing ‘basic fundamental rights of free speech and thought process,” according to reports.

“The King has directed that the appointment of Raminder Singh, Baron Ranger to be a Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated December 31, 2015, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order,” reads the official public notice in ‘The London Gazette’.

The revocation orders came reportedly after a review of the forfeiture committee. The committee examines cases of individuals with honours, whose action might ruin the reputation of the honorary system. The forfeiture committee’s recommendations were then conveyed to King Charles III through Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Both Ranger and Bhanot have criticised the move terming it an “attack on free speech”.

Ranger, who has openly criticised the Khalistan movement, in a statement to the media following the revocation said, “Today I lost my CBE for standing up against Khalistanis who wish to break up India and the BBC for producing a two-part documentary with the help of anti-Prime Minister Modi guests to imply that the PM was involved in the Gujarat riots some 20 years after the riots and for which PM Modi was exonerated by the highest court in India”.

He also mentioned that he has plans to take this up legally, seek a judicial review and added that he would be appealing against the decision with the European Court of Human Rights.

King and Queen’s Christmas card revealed

King Charles and Queen Camilla have chosen a photograph of themselves taken in the garden of Buckingham Palace for their official Christmas card.

The photograph – taken in April – shows the smiling couple standing side-by-side on what appears to be a sunny day. The greeting inside reads “Wishing you a very happy Christmas and New Year”.

The King – standing on the left – is wearing a grey suit and blue tie with his right hand tucked into his pocket, while the Queen wears a blue wool crepe dress. This photograph is their third Christmas card since Charles became King.

The image, captured by photographer Millie Pilkington, was taken as the King returned to public duties following his cancer diagnosis and treatment. The palace said the card reflects the moment life was beginning to return to normality.

The photograph is also a more informal picture than the one chosen for Christmas 2023. Last year’s picture was captured by Hugo Burnand and showed the royal couple in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace following the coronation.

The couple were standing side-by-side, with King Charles pictured wearing the Imperial State Crown and Queen Camilla wearing Queen Mary’s Crown. Christmas images used to decorate official festive cards are regularly released by senior members of the Royal Family.

It will take Charles and Camilla several days to personally sign all the cards. There will be around 2,700 which will be sent to people across the globe including family, friends, world leaders and organisations.

  • ‘Eurostar the worst-performing rail service in Europe’

‘Eurostar the worst-performing rail service in Europe’

The report from the campaign group Transport and Environment (T&E) scored Europe’s rail operators on factors such as ticket prices, punctuality and willingness to give refunds…reports Asian Lite News

Eurostar is the worst-performing rail service on the continent and Germany’s Deutsche Bahn is one of the least reliable, according to a ranking of 27 European operators.

The report from the campaign group Transport and Environment (T&E) scored Europe’s rail operators on factors such as ticket prices, punctuality and willingness to give refunds. It found that only 11 operators had punctuality rates above 80%. Eurostar disputed the findings. Deutsche Bahn declined to comment.

Trains emit less planet-heating gas than planes and cars, but on many routes holidaymakers find it cheaper to fly and commuters find it more reliable to drive. Campaigners said the results showed that all rail operators could do better, and encouraged governments to help them.

Victor Thévenet, a rail expert at T&E and lead author of the report, said people wanted to travel by train but “many are stopped from doing so because the price is too high, especially for families, or because it’s not reliable”.

T&E rated the companies on eight criteria covering cost and quality, giving more weight to factors that passengers said were important, such as ticket prices and special fares. Lesser factors such as bicycle policies and night train offerings contributed 5% each to the overall score.

Italy’s Trenitalia scored highest in the ranking, with an average of 7.7 out of 10, followed by Switzerland’s SBB, the Czech Republic’s RegioJet, Austria’s ÖBB and France’s SNCF. At the bottom of the list were Eurostar, Greece’s Hellenic Train and France’s Ouigo.

The report praised the UK for reimbursing customers for delays, but criticised the high price of its tickets. It found the three most expensive rail companies in Europe operate totally or partly in the UK. Eurostar, which serves routes such as London to Paris and Brussels, charges nearly twice the European average price per kilometre when comparing routes of comparable length, the report found.

Eurostar said it had updated its booking experience and cycling policy since the data was collected, and relaunched a service to buy last-minute fares at discounted prices. It said it did not provide automated refunds for delays because it wanted to let customers choose the type of compensation they received.

“We are confident that if this report were redone again, the scores would be higher,” a spokesperson said. “We’ve had a record number of passengers travel with us this year and we expect that figure to grow as we continue to invest in our service.”

Thévenet attributed the high scores for Trenitalia to more than a decade of competition with Italo on Italy’s high-speed network, which has pushed both operators to provide a better service. He also praised Switzerland’s investments in its rail infrastructure, which helped SBB to offer the most punctual service.

Europe has an extensive rail network, but passengers are often frustrated when travelling across countries because of the fragmented ticketing system. The European Commission plans to propose a simplified system next year to let customers buy a single ticket that maintains their rights in the event of a delay.

“It is possible to build and run rail services that offer cheap, popular, low-carbon travel to meet the needs of most people,” said , a transport researcher at the University of Leeds who was not involved in the study. “Many of our European neighbours are already doing this, although there is also room for improvement as the report shows.”
