300 Militants Killed as Syrian Army Tightens Grip

The fighting in Hama involves advances and retreats by both sides, unlike the battle for Aleppo…reports Asian Lite News

The Syrian army forces engaged in fierce fighting in the central province of Hama against rebel factions, mainly the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), killing at least 300 militants, according to the Syrian Defence Ministry.

The ministry said that units of the Syrian army deployed along the front lines in northern rural Hama have been battling since morning against armed terrorist organisations affiliated with HTS, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Our forces are targeting terrorist gatherings in depth and their convoys on all movement axes using artillery, rockets, and joint Syrian-Russian warplanes,” the ministry said in a statement.

“These operations have resulted in the elimination of at least 300 militants, including foreign nationals, and the downing and destruction of more than 25 drones,” it said, adding that reinforcements have been sent to bolster the front lines and prevent further rebel advances.

Rami Abdulrahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that HTS and allied factions are advancing from three fronts — north, northeast, and west — in an attempt to reach the city of Hama.

“Hama is a battle of attrition; that’s why there’s a media campaign on social media,” Abdulrahman said.

In the morning, the Syrian army forces pushed HTS back 15 kilometres from Hama. “By evening, HTS managed to cut off the Syrian Desert road and introduced their so-called ‘Red Bands’ elite units on the northern outskirts of Hama,” he added.

The fighting in Hama involves advances and retreats by both sides, unlike the battle for Aleppo, he noted.

Meanwhile, in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, life within the government-held city remains normal despite nearby clashes, a day after the Kurdish-led militias attacked government positions and military sites in a bid to storm seven villages in the countryside of Deir al-Zour without succeeding, according to the pro-government Sham FM radio.

In Aleppo, which fell to the rebels on Friday, Sham FM reported ongoing incidents of theft in several homes and neighbourhoods by unknown armed individuals, believed to be escaped criminals from Aleppo Central Prison.

“Civil society organisations are urging residents to secure their homes and avoid interaction with these armed groups,” the report said.

The city has also experienced intermittent communication disruptions, with partial outages of cellular networks and internet services leading to loss of contact between Aleppo residents and relatives in other provinces.

The recent escalation in Hama and other regions underscores the intensifying conflict between Syrian government forces and rebel groups, including HTS, which controls parts of northwest Syria.

The United Nations and humanitarian organisations have repeatedly called for the protection of civilians and unimpeded access to aid delivery, expressing concern over the impact of the ongoing conflict on the Syrian population.

    Bhutan King Lands in India

During his visit, the Bhutan King will hold a series of bilateral meetings with the Indian leadership to review the diplomatic ties…reports Asian Lite News

Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck received a warm welcome from External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar upon his arrival in New Delhi on Thursday for his two-day official visit to India.

He was accompanied by Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck and senior officials from the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Taking to X, Jaishankar posted, “Honoured to welcome His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, on his arrival in New Delhi today.”

“His visit will further strengthen our unique bonds of friendship,” he further wrote.

During his visit, the Bhutan King will hold a series of bilateral meetings with the Indian leadership to review the diplomatic ties.

The high-level visit, which concludes on Friday, signifies the deep-rooted ties and mutual respect between the two neighbouring nations, said an official press statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The Bhutan King will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking another chapter in the ongoing high-level engagements between the two countries.

Additionally, Jaishankar and other senior officials from the Government of India are set to call on the Bhutan King. These meetings aim to strengthen existing collaborations and explore new avenues for bilateral cooperation, according to the press statement.

India and Bhutan share an extraordinary and exemplary relationship underpinned by mutual trust, goodwill, and understanding.

The foundation of these ties dates back to 1949, when the two countries signed the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which was renewed in February 2007 to reflect evolving dynamics. Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1968, further solidifying this enduring partnership.

One notable feature of the bilateral relationship between the two nations is their economic interdependence. Approximately 50,000 Indian citizens are employed in Bhutan across various sectors, including construction, education, and infrastructure projects. Some workers even commute daily from India to Bhutan’s border towns for their jobs.

This integration demonstrates the depth of cooperation and shared prosperity between the two nations.

The scope of collaboration has expanded significantly in recent years, moving beyond traditional areas like hydropower to include emerging sectors such as digital infrastructure, education, and space technology.

Bhutan became the second country to adopt the BHIM App, facilitating financial linkages, and India has supported Bhutan’s ‘Digital Drukyul’ initiative, which aims to build a robust optical fibre network across all 20 districts.

Space cooperation is another promising area of collaboration.

Following the 2019 visit of India’s Prime Minister to Bhutan, the jointly developed ‘India-Bhutan SAT’ was launched in November 2022.

This initiative, along with other technological partnerships, underscores the progressive nature of the bilateral relationship.

In education, India continues to support Bhutan in addressing shortages of STEM teachers, enhancing the country’s human resource capabilities.

The King’s visit provides an opportunity to review and advance these initiatives, further cementing the long-standing friendship and exploring new frontiers of collaboration between India and Bhutan.

Trump Warns Hamas, Netanyahu Thanks Him

Trump’s statement followed the release of a video by Hamas showing American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander pleading for his release….reports Asian Lite News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thanked US President-elect Donald Trump after the latter called for the hostages held in Gaza to be released by Hamas the day he takes charge as the President.

In a post on X, Netanyahu on Tuesday expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to thank President Trump for his strong statement yesterday about the need for Hamas to release the hostages, the responsibility of Hamas, and this adds another force to our continued effort to release all the hostages. Thank you, President Trump.”

Trump’s statement followed the release of a video by Hamas showing American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander pleading for his release.

In response, Trump posted a warning on Truth Social, saying, “Everybody is talking about the hostages who are being held so violently, inhumanely, and against the will of the entire World, in the Middle East – But it’s all talk, and no action!”

He added that if the hostages were not released by January 20, 2025, when he would assume office, the US would take drastic measures.

“Please let this TRUTH serve to represent that if the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume Office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity.”

Trump made it clear that those responsible for the hostage situation would face severe consequences, stating, “Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW!”

The warning, coming days after the release of the hostage video, has added pressure on those holding hostages in the Middle East.

Netanyahu’s public endorsement of Trump’s statement highlights the growing international resolve to secure the release of those held captive.

Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Trump’s statement had made clear to everyone who was in the right, and who was wrong.

“This is the way to bring back the hostages: by increasing the pressure and the costs for Hamas and its supporters, and defeating them, rather than giving in to their absurd demands.”

Families of the missing hostages also expressed their gratitude. “It is now evident to all: the time has come. We must bring them home NOW,” the families forum said.

On the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, MEA said as far as cases against individuals were concerned, India took note of the legal processes that are underway….reports Asian Lite News

An influential US lawmaker has said the interim Bangladeshi government led by Muhammad Yunus has an absolute obligation to protect the minority Hindu community in the country after the fall of the democratically-elected Sheikh Hasina-led government earlier this year.

“Bangladesh’s interim government has an absolute obligation to protect its Hindu minority and meaningfully address the protests of thousands of minority Hindus in outcry over the recent wave of attacks and harassment,” Congressman Brad Sherman said on Tuesday in a statement.

“With the calls for an investigation from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk for killings and other rights violations during the violent unrest leading up to and after the fall of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the current administration must demonstrate leadership in eliminating acts of violence against the Hindu community,” Sherman said.

Over the weekend, Hindus from Bangladesh organised a rally at the White House demanding the release of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das and protection for Hindus of Bangladesh.

Utsav Chakrabarti, executive director of HinduACTion called on the outgoing Biden-Harris administration to take all possible measures to prevent further escalation of violence by radical Islamists against the Hindus in Bangladesh.

“Based on the feedback we are getting from #Bangladesh, Hindu monk and civil rights defender Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, who has been incarcerated by the interim government, faces a serious threat to his life, in custody,” he said.

Responding to written questions in Lok Sabha about violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar said the Indian High Commission in Dhaka was closely monitoring the situation. He reiterated that the primary responsibility for the safety of minorities in Bangladesh lies with the interim government in the neighbouring country.

“Our position on the matter is clear — the interim government in Dhaka must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities. We are concerned at the surge of extremist rhetoric, and increasing incidents of violence and provocation. These developments cannot be dismissed only as media exaggeration,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

While expressing concern over extremist rhetoric, MEA also called for a “fair, just and transparent legal process” in the case of religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das who was arrested on sedition charges.

Amid calls in Dhaka for a ban on ISKCON, with which Das was associated earlier, the Indian government also threw in its lot with the group as MEA Spokesperson Jaiswal said that the group is a “globally well-regarded organisation with a strong record of social service”.

On the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, MEA said as far as cases against individuals were concerned, India took note of the legal processes that are underway.

“We expect that these processes will deal with the case in a just, fair, and transparent manner, ensuring full respect for the legal rights of all concerned.”

In Lok Sabha, EAM Jaishankar said the Indian government has seen several reports of incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities, their homes and business establishments, and of attacks on temples and religious places, including in August 2024, across Bangladesh.

Through a narrative that intertwined heritage with modernity and nature with technology, the event celebrated the UAE’s unique story.

The 40-minute Eid Al Etihad ceremony celebrated the UAE’s deep connection to nature and its journey from ancient traditions to modern innovation. The show included seven chapters: Thuraya Star, Guided Through History, Simple Gestures, Under the Palms, A Flourishing Union, Shared Gestures, and Celebration.

One of the highlights was a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who grew up in Al Ain and was mentored by his mother, Sheikha Salama bint Butti Al Qubaisi. The performance documented Sheikh Zayed’s journey from a young leader who restored and renovated Al Ain’s water resources, including the aflaj system, to becoming the Founding Father of the UAE.

The celebration also highlighted the journey of the Union, from signing the Union Pledge and unifying the emirates in 1971, followed by the unification of the UAE Armed Forces in 1976, to the transformation of the UAE today into a thriving hub for innovation and artificial intelligence.

The official ceremony also included a tribute to the late Sheikh Tahnoon bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, who was appointed as Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region in 1971 and held that position until his passing on 1 May 2024.

The ceremony showcased innovative storytelling techniques and cutting-edge stage technologies – including drones, and light and shadow play – which worked in harmony with the natural beauty of the Jebel Hafeet backdrop.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, made up of 66 musicians, joined forces with 33 UAE-based musicians to present a musical experience that seamlessly blended Emirati heritage with a profound sense of national pride.

The ceremony concluded with an impressive assortment of innovations dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural environment of the UAE, complemented by a striking visual display reflecting the event’s commitment to sustainability. Attendees witnessed a giant depiction of a palm tree in the sky, created using drones, featuring descending flares to symbolise the date harvest.

The ceremony was live-streamed across the UAE in celebration zones, on TV channels, and via the official YouTube channel.

Construction work for the ceremony at Jebel Hafeet Desert Park began in September 2024, involving more than 10,000 individuals from around the world who collaborated to bring the official 53rd Eid Al Etihad celebration to life.

Held under the theme “Our Workers’ Happiness in Our Union’s Celebration”, the celebratory activities are organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, Dubai Police General Command, municipalities across the UAE, National Ambulance, and Ras Al Khaimah Free Zone, with the participation of more than one million workers.

The two-day nationwide celebrations feature a wide range of entertainment activities, competitions, giveaways, and prizes, including a raffle with a car as the grand prize. Tickets for London’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks go on sale

The first round of tickets went on sale on 18 October…reports Asian Lite News

The final round of tickets for London’s annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display went on sale at midday on Monday. They are priced between £20 and £50, depending on the viewing area, and Londoners will be charged £15 less than visitors.

The first round of tickets went on sale on 18 October. “I’m proud that every year the eyes of the world look to London to see how we welcome in the new year,” said Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

“Our tickets are always in high demand so I urge anyone wanting to attend this fantastic evening to buy them as soon as possible from our only authorised outlet.” The celebrations begin with Big Ben’s chimes and are shown live around the world.

Tickets for some viewing areas have more than doubled – from £20 to £50 – for the 12-minute display. City Hall said prices had increased this year to “enhance security and crowd management”. It stressed only tickets from official sales partner Ticketmaster would be accepted.

Individual purchasers can buy up to four tickets. For bigger families and groups, another adult in the family or group can buy up to the same number of tickets, according to City Hall.

However, groups hoping to watch the fireworks together have been advised to travel to the event together and ensure they have booked the same viewing area and entry gate – as moving between viewing areas on the night will not be allowed.

The ticket purchaser may also be asked to show photo ID to enter.

The post on the Ticketmaster reads: “Welcome 2025 in style at the Mayor of London’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations. It’s set to be a night of unmissable moments, and it is one of the biggest celebrations of its kind in the world. To come to this event, you will need a ticket. These must be bought on this website. Tickets will not be available on the night.”

Westminster Bridge, the Golden Jubilee Footbridge and Waterloo Bridge will all be closed before and after the event, with City Hall warning ticket-purchasers to “consider carefully how you will travel to your preferred viewing area on the night”.The London mayor’s office adds: “Stations will be very busy when the event ends. Choose the side of the river you want to be on afterwards to get home more easily.

Wandsworth Wins Gold and Silver at the London Design Awards…reports Asian Lite News

Totterdown Street in Tooting Broadway and Waterman’s Green in Putney have earned gold and silver awards, respectively, at the prestigious London Design Awards 2024. This international competition celebrates exceptional designs and creative projects worldwide, drawing over 2,500 submissions from more than 30 countries this year.

Taking home the gold, Totterdown Street in Tooting Broadway has been transformed into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly community hub. Previously a functional area dominated by parking and delivery points, the Wandsworth Council reimagined the space to reflect the area’s dynamic multicultural energy. The project’s vision focused on creating a central public area for gathering, socialising, and enjoying new green infrastructure alongside active travel options.

A key aspect of this transformation was close collaboration with Tooting Market, extending its lively atmosphere onto Totterdown Street. The result is a shared-use space that benefits local businesses and encourages community interaction. The pedestrianisation is currently operating as a trial scheme, with plans for permanent additions like rain gardens and trees after community feedback is reviewed.

Earning silver, Waterman’s Green in Putney has undergone a remarkable redesign. Once a dark, underutilised patch of land near Putney Bridge, it is now a welcoming and accessible public space. The project focused on inclusivity, sustainability, and biodiversity. Enhancements include an accessible ramp, widened entrances, and open, sweeping views of the Thames.

The redesign also introduced native trees and diverse greenery, significantly improving local biodiversity and air quality by screening visitors from the busy Lower Richmond Road. This sustainable approach has turned Waterman’s Green into a natural oasis, providing habitats for wildlife and a tranquil escape for residents.

Councillor Kemi Akinola, Deputy Leader of the Council, expressed pride in these achievements: “Our recent accomplishments highlight our commitment to improving Wandsworth for everyone. Whether it’s upgrading parks, investing in roads and pavements, or enhancing active travel options, we’re creating a greener, more sustainable, and inclusive borough. These initiatives not only improve quality of life for residents but also ensure Wandsworth is prepared for the future.”

Both award-winning projects exemplify the importance of community engagement in Wandsworth’s design philosophy.

For Totterdown Street, local businesses and community members played a crucial role in shaping the design through detailed consultations. Similarly, the rejuvenation of Waterman’s Green was informed by extensive surveys and collaboration with residents and stakeholders. With 94% support from residents, the project has successfully created a space that balances environmental sustainability with community needs.

These accolades underscore Wandsworth’s dedication to sustainable, inclusive public spaces that enhance quality of life and support local businesses. As the borough continues to prioritise innovation and collaboration, these projects set a benchmark for future initiatives.

Venue chosen for Mayor Khan’s next Q&A session

The Q&A session on Thursday, December 12, will mark the first time in almost two years that the mayor’s twice-annual event has taken place outside City Hall. …reports Asian Lite News

A secret venue in Wandsworth has been chosen as the location for the next People’s Question Time event, where Londoners will have the chance to put questions directly to Sadiq Khan.

The Q&A session on Thursday, December 12, will mark the first time in almost two years that the mayor’s twice-annual event has taken place outside City Hall.

As a new measure to prevent “disruption” however, the event’s precise location will only be given to ticket holders on Monday, December 9. Khan has required police protection and has faced death threats throughout his mayoralty. In the updated edition of his book, Breathe, he told readers that at the height of the protests over his Ultra low emission zone (Ulez) expansion last year, he received a bullet in the mail.

Ordinarily, People’s Question Time takes place in a different London borough roughly every six months, but the last two were held under tightened security at the mayor’s east London HQ, amid concerns over his safety.

The last time the event took place outside City Hall was in March 2023 in Ealing, where Khan sparked anger from many in the audience after saying that some anti-Ulez protesters were “joining hands” with the “far right”, including “Covid deniers” and “vaccine deniers”.

The next session was meant to take place in November 2023 in Westminster, but was moved to the chamber of City Hall due to growing fears over the mayor’s security. At that event, an anti-Ulez protester was fined for trying to put up a small sticker showing Khan with a pair of testicles around his neck.

The following session, in February 2024, should have taken place in Richmond, but was again held in City Hall – only this time, it was conducted virtually, with no audience able to attend the session in person, and the mayor answering questions via video link in his office.

Asked whether it was due to there being fewer security concerns that the event can now return to its borough-visiting format, a spokesman for the Greater London Authority said: “People’s Question Time is a key opportunity for Londoners to engage directly with the mayor and London Assembly members and discuss the issues they care about.

“We are committed to ensuring the event can take place safely and securely in-person for attendees and participants, and have made a change in the way that we announce the location of the venue following disruption at previous events.”

Attendees will have to go through an airport-style security screening and present ID.

Freezing temperatures as low as -10C forecast in UK

The forecasters warned that alongside the chilly temperatures, some should expect wintry showers and snow in the days ahead. …reports Asian Lite News

The Met Office has warned Brits to expect more snow next week as temperatures plunge to below freezing in some regions. After a relatively mild weekend with highs of 16C in the southwest, temperatures are expected to drop as low as minus 7C in parts of rural Scotland on Monday night.

The forecasters warned that alongside the chilly temperatures, some should expect wintry showers and snow in the days ahead.

“Tuesday will start with a widespread frost and potentially patchy fog in places,” the Met Office said in its outlook for next week. “Rain will spread east later in the day or overnight into Wednesday, with some snow likely in places initially, mainly over high ground in Scotland and northern England.”

Mild weather on Sunday will be followed by “wet and windy” conditions in parts of the UK, including Wales and northwest England.

“Starting on Monday we will see some colder weather arrive,” spokesperson Becky Mitchell said. “Temperatures will be a bit below average to start next week. Monday we have got some showery outbreaks of rain and northerly wind. Tuesday we will have a band of rain gradually moving in from the west. The temperatures this whole time will be around mid-single figures, so feeling pretty chilly. We will have some overnight frost as well, particularly on Monday night. Temperatures on Monday could fall as low as about -7C in parts of rural Scotland overnight. That is likely to be the coldest night of the week. Thereafter temperatures are probably turning average from midweek, with rain at times and some dry interludes too.”

The plunging temperatures come after weeks of disruption across the UK due to severe weather. The Met Office issued weather alerts for rain across parts of the UK when Storm Conall arrived earlier this week, with many told to prepare for flooding, power cuts and travel chaos.

It came just days after Storm Bert caused havoc across many areas of the UK.

Communities in England and Wales were starting a “massive clean-up” following the widespread flooding, with residents in some affected areas saying they do not believe the debris will be cleared by Christmas.
