Strengthening Neighbourhood Bonds: India and Maldives Chart a Path for Shared Security and Growth

In a delegation-level meeting with his Maldivian counterpart, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh underscored India’s commitment to bolstering ties with the Maldives. Reflecting on President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024, Singh highlighted the transformative impact of the visit, saying, “The Joint Vision Document released during the visit acts as a guiding principle for our two countries.”

Emphasizing the deep-rooted cultural, spiritual, and historical ties between the nations, Singh described the India-Maldives relationship as “close, cordial, and multidimensional.” He reaffirmed the Maldives’ strategic importance under India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, aimed at fostering stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.

“India will continue to support the Maldives in capacity-building, development needs, and the welfare of its people as a trusted partner and close friend.”

The Defence Minister highlighted the shared responsibility of India and the Maldives in ensuring maritime security, aligning with India’s SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region) initiative. Singh also stressed the importance of robust defence cooperation, which includes training programs, joint exercises, and equipment support for the Maldives National Defence Force.

The Maldives holds a special place in India’s strategic framework due to its geographical proximity, cultural ties, and location along key maritime trade routes. Tourism remains a vital economic pillar for the Maldives, contributing nearly 70% of employment directly or indirectly. Strengthening bilateral cooperation aims to enhance economic and strategic ties, further solidifying the partnership.
