US lauds UAE’s role in fostering religious cooperation

U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, hailed the efforts made by the government of the United Arab Emirates in advancing mutual understanding and respect across faith communities.

He made the remarks while addressing the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies, where he commended the role of the Forum’s President Shaykh Bin Bayyah in bringing together faith leaders, government officials, and civil society.

“I am particularly encouraged by the work of the Peace Forum, its partners, and the Government of the United Arab Emirates in advancing mutual understanding and respect across faith communities. There have been some groundbreaking initiatives in the past few years, which involved many of you who are participating today. Looking forward, the theme of this gathering neatly sums up the work that lies ahead for all of us: “Human Values After Corona: Reviving Virtues in Times of Crisis.”

U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback

The Peace Forum, he continued, is “insightful in posing questions about how the challenges we face from the pandemic reflect on the state of humanity. Preservation of human life is our highest priority. We are all also committed to uplifting the dignity of every individual, which is best achieved by protecting the rights of all individuals, especially in the face of current challenges. Without virtues, we cannot succeed in protecting human rights and uplifting the dignity of every individual.”

He added, “In early 2020, the United States launched an International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance, an action-oriented network that has grown to include 32 countries that meets monthly at the expert level and annually at the foreign minister level to coordinate religious freedom initiatives. One of the first initiatives of the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance was to call on all governments to fully protect the rights of all individuals, including members of religious minority groups, during the pandemic.”

He highlighted the significant civil society initiatives that are helping to advance religious freedom and peace around the world, such as the Peace Forum and its Alliance of Virtue and Shared Human Values initiative.

“In January, an Abrahamic Faiths Initiative or AFI was launched in Rome. This initiative of faith leaders seeks to promote peace and mutual respect across and through Abrahamic faith communities globally. At that first AFI meeting faith leaders in Rome, including Shaykh Bin Bayyah, expressed solidarity in promoting peace and mutual understanding. They all just met again last week, virtually, and came up with inspiring concrete plans to work together for peace around the world. Shaykh Bin Bayyah’s wisdom and leadership has been invaluable across all these efforts. I hope that the advocacy of members of the Alliance helps to end the persecution of individuals on the basis of their religion or beliefs. Nobody should face harassment, abuse, torture or imprisonment for simply trying to live in accordance with their conscience. Individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, should respect and accept one another’s beliefs and work together toward common challenges, such as the pursuit of peace, health, and prosperity.”

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi

Without this cooperation, he continued, “we cannot improve our societies, and we cannot overcome one of the greatest challenges of our time, the global pandemic, which will have impacts far beyond its devastating health implications.”

UAE, UN to Host World Space Forum

The two-day World Space Forum, which will begin Wednesday , is a key global forum that aims to achieve the United Nations, UN, Sustainable Development Goals and ensure the ideal global utilisation of space discoveries and science technologies.

Theme “Space for Our Future”, the event brings together experts and policymakers from regional, national and local institutions, private organisations, academic institutions, non-governmental organisations and international organisations, to exchange views on the four pillars of space economy, space society, space accessibility and space diplomacy.

The remote forum, which will be held via video conferencing and is jointly organised by the UAE Space Agency and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, UNOOSA, reflects the country’s efforts to achieve sustainability in this key sector and adopt the best international practices, highlighted by the recent announcement of the signing of an agreement between the agency and the UNOOSA to establish a UN office in Abu Dhabi in charge of space sector affairs and sustainability.

In the following report, the Emirates News Agency, WAM, will present some of the forum’s agendas and key pillars. The forum aims to support the efforts to realise the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, through exchanging expertise, adopting best practices, reinforcing the cooperation between space agencies, and ensuring the ideal global use of space discoveries, sciences and technologies, to create a better future for generations to come.

The forum will feature events and workshops that will focus on various topics, including the role of the space sector in addressing climate change, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises involved in the sector, the impact of the sector on the economy, and relevant partnerships between the public and private sectors.

In June 2020, the UAE Space Agency announced the signing of an agreement with the UNOOSA to establish an office in Abu Dhabi, which will reinforce the country’s strategic position in the region within relevant international organisations.

The signing of the agreement is due to the agency’s keenness to consolidate its ties with its strategic partners and aims to promote international cooperation in the field of space and sustainability, in line with the UAE’s efforts to create a diversified and sustainable economy and the UNOOSA’s goals.

Etihad launches aircraft carbon offset programme

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, has committed to purchasing carbon offsets, to completely neutralise the CO2 emissions of its flagship “Greenliner” 787-10 aircraft for a full year of operations in 2021.

The initiative is the start of the airline’s journey to reduce CO2 emissions to 50 percent of 2019 levels by 2035, and to achieve full net zero emissions by 2050 – a first for any airline in the Gulf and one of the first to set a target of this scale in the industry. Separately the airline will implement an additional voluntary offset programme for passengers via its website (etihad.com) in 2021.

Etihad’s Greenliner carbon offset programme has been sourced in partnership with Respira, an international carbon offset finance house specialising in tailored offset schemes across multiple sectors. Etihad’s plan is centred on a Tanzanian forestry project and will initially purchase 80,000 tonnes of CO2 offsets.

The Makame Savannah REDD project – developed by Carbon Tanzania – employs a unique community-based model to curb deforestation and promote better management of local natural resources across over 100,000 hectares in the southern extension of the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem.

The offset scheme is verified and certified by VERRA, an independent carbon offset quality assurance body, under its Verified Carbon Standard. This ensures carbon offsets are quantifiable, additional, and fully sustainable. In addition, the Tanzanian project conforms to Climate, Community and Biodiversity standards, which protect endangered species and local communities. The scheme’s first offset vintages were certified in early November 2020.

Tony Douglas, Etihad Aviation Group CEO, said: “It’s encouraging to end a difficult year with such a positive move for the sustainable future of aviation. While the year brought many challenges, sustainability has remained at the top of our agenda, and the work hasn’t stopped. Expect to see more ground-breaking initiatives in 2021 as we learn the environmental lessons from initiatives with our Greenliner fleet and other sustainability initiatives”.

The launch of the Greenliner carbon offset programme complements Etihad’s ongoing work to develop and test Sustainable Aviation Fuels, SAFs, with the goal of making them commercially viable for widespread adoption by the industry.

Ana Haurie, CEO of Respira, said: “Respira offers a fresh approach to the carbon market by aligning the interests of project developers, buyers and capital providers. In this way we create win-win outcomes for all stakeholders. It is a privilege to work with Etihad, which has shown real commitment to its sustainability goals through what is a challenging period for the airline industry.”

UAE, India aim to treble food trade by 2025

The UAE and India aim to treble the volume of their food trade in the next five years.

Optimism in achieving this goal was expressed by a multitude of speakers from the government and private sectors in both countries at the “UAE-India Food Security Summit 2020,” a two-day hybrid event, which began on Tuesday.

The summit brings together about 200 businessmen, representatives of state-owned organisations, investors and other economic enterprises from the UAE and India. It follows a hybrid format as several of the Indian participants, including state ministers and officials, have travelled to Dubai for business meetings while other participants are making their contributions virtually.

Addressing the summit in person, Punjab’s Minister for Non-Resident Indian Affairs, Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, said the UAE and India are ideal partners for the food industry because his country is 70 percent agrarian while the UAE is a pioneer in food security strategy.

Navin K. Choudhary, Principal Secretary for Agriculture in the government of Jammu and Kashmir, who is leading a 20-member business delegation to the UAE from the union territory, also addressed the summit in person. The delegation has just completed a “fruitful” meeting with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. A key focus of the team is to promote apples from the union territory in the UAE market.

Dr. Ahmed Al Banna, UAE’s Ambassador to India, told the summit that the UAE has the potential to be the “gateway to the world” for India’s food and agriculture products exports. He described the subjects being discussed over two days at the summit as being “close to our hearts” and revealed that a lot of work between the two sides has been done with common goals since the disruptions of COVID-19 began.

He hoped that a scheme for production-linked incentives, PLI, recently approved by India’s cabinet will give a shot in the arm for Indian exports to the UAE, which is India’s third biggest trade partner for the seventh consecutive year.

Underlining the importance of the summit’s theme, Pavan Kapoor, India’s Ambassador to the UAE, said this was the third event focused on food trade between the two countries in four months. “India wants to work with the UAE as a reliable partner in food security” as demonstrated by the movement of crucial cargo by air throughout the pandemic.

He said India had amended its Essential Commodities Act and allowed exports of critical food items like cereals, pulses and edible oils. He referred to growing UAE investments in India’s food parks.

Underlining the “immense and untapped potential” of the food sector in bilateral business, Dr. Aman Puri, Consul General of India in Dubai, the chief organiser of the summit, remarked that UAE-India partnership in food trade can strengthen food security in the entire Middle East and North Africa region.

Farmers’ meet with shah fails to strike deal

The meeting between a delegation of farmers’ leaders and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday failed to reach any agreement, as the government refused outright to repeal the three farm laws and only offered amendments, according to a participant.

All India Kisan Sabha leader Hannan Mollah said that the government only offered to carry out certain amendments.

“The government said it will give a proposal to the farmers tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. Till the government gives us in writing that the laws will be rolled back, there is no point in coming for the meeting,” he told reporters.

The next round of talks between the farmers’ leaders and the government is scheduled on Wednesday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah

A meeting of the farmers’ union leaders would be held on the Singhu border at 12 noon on Wednesday to decide the way ahead.

The meeting on Tuesday was delayed as differences emerged between the farmers’ leaders over the venue.

According to sources, the meeting slated for 7 p.m. at Amit Shah’s residence could not take place as farmers’ leaders, save Rakesh Tikait of the BKU, did not reach there.

Later, sources within the farmers’ unions said that the leaders did not want to go to the Home Minister’s residence and sought another venue, after which they were asked to move to the PUSA Institute.

The farmers, before heading for the meeting, claimed that the nationwide Bharat Bandh called by them on Tuesday was successful and the people supported their cause even as the shutdown evoked a mixed response across the country.

Consolation Win for Aus, Series for India

Riding on wicket-keeper-batsman Matthew Wade’s 80 and Glenn Maxwell’s 54 and a combined haul of five wickets for 64 runs in 10 overs by spinners Mitchell Swepson, Adam Zampa and Maxwell, Australia defeated India by 12 runs in the third and final T20 International at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The win restored some pride for Australia as they had lost the series 2-1 after going down in the first two matches.

The Aussies had won the ODI series 2-1 prior to the T20Is.

India, who lost KL Rahul on just the second ball of the innings as the opener holed out to deep mid-wicket, kept losing wickets at regular intervals as the top-order caved in.

Only skipper Virat Kohli kept up the fight, making 85 off 61 deliveries. At one point in time, it seemed that Kohli and Hardik Pandya would tilt the game in India’s favour as they took 20 runs in the 16th over and 13 runs in the 17th over to bring the equation down to 43 off 18 balls.

However, Pandya was dismissed off the first ball of the 18th over for a 13-ball 20 and soon after that Kohli was dismissed on the first ball of the 19th over.

Swepson was the star for Australia picking three for 23 in his four overs. He removed Shikhar Dhawan (28 off 21), Sanju Samson (10 off 9) and Shreyas Iyer (first-ball duck).

Earlier, Wade’s 80 and a quick-fire 54 from Glenn Maxwell helped Australia set an imposing 187-run target for India.

Put into bat, Australia didn’t have a great start as they lost skipper Aaron Finch in the second over. Finch was caught by Hardik Pandya at mid-off off Washington Sundar and went back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers.

Wade, who was leading the hosts in the second T20I in the absence of injured Finch, however, kept scoring boundaries at the other end and carried the Australian innings forward.

Australia moved to 51/1 at the end of the powerplay. Finch and Steve smith added 65 runs for the second-wicket before Smith was dismissed by Sundar in the 10th over at his individual score of 24.

But Wade, who had scored a well-rounded 58 in the second T20I, brought his second consecutive fifty in the 11th over bowled by left-arm pace bowler T Natarajan.

Glenn Maxwell, who came into bat next, then stitched another 50-plus partnership with Wade to take Australia on course for a big score.

Maxwell, in particular, was at his menacing best as he clubbed two sixes in the final over of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who went for 41 in his four overs. The right-handed batsman played plenty of reverse sweeps and switch hits during the course of his 36-ball innings.

Virat Kohli

The duo added 90 runs in just 53 balls before Wade was out in the penultimate over of the innings. His 53-ball 80 included seven fours and two sixes.

Maxwell, after scoring 54 with the help of three fours and three sixes, was bowled by Natarajan in the final over.

For India, Sundar returned with figures of 2/34 while Natarajan picked a wicket while conceding 33 runs in his four overs.

Brief scores: Australia 186/5 wkts in 20 overs (Matthew Wade 80, Glenn Maxwell 54; Washington Sundar 2/34) beat India 174/7 wkts in 20 overs (V Kohli 85, S Dhawan 28, H Pandya 20, M Swepson 3/23, G Maxwell 1/20, A Zampa 1/21) by 12 runs
