Privileged background kept me away from racism: Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has said that he was lucky enough to have been brought up as a white-ish middle class in a multi-racial society and play his cricket in a multi-cultural club like Essex that ensured that he experienced very little racism.

“I encountered very little racism at Essex. Growing up as a young boy in Ilford having been born in India and having a surname of Hussain and a first name of Nasser I did encounter some name-calling due to ignorance,” Hussain told PakPassion.net

“I was lucky enough to play at a club like Essex where we had a middle-order of Nadeem Shahid, Saleem Malik and myself. We had a very multi-cultural county in the south of our county at Ilford where I grew up with my dad and his cricket school where we had a British West Indian net, British Indian net and a British Pakistani net and we would all take the mickey out of each other when India were playing Pakistan, or England were losing to the West Indies. It was great banter and it was fun,” he said.

Hussain said he was fortunate enough to have come from a white-ish middle-class, privileged background.

“I grew up in that multi-cultural environment and I was very fortunate. But I understand that I was a white-ish middle-class, public school educated boy so I can’t put myself in the shoes of some of the British Asians that are growing up in certain parts of the UK,” he said.

Hussain also said that Pakistan batting mainstay Babar Azam has the potential to end up as one of the greats.

“Babar has what it takes to become one of the greats. In white-ball cricket he is up there with the best of them. He is up near the top of the rankings in T20Is, and in fifty over cricket he is exceptional too,” Hussain pointed out.

“He did okay in the Test series against England bearing in mind England is not an easy place to come and play Test cricket. He just needs that consistency in Test cricket to be up there with the likes of Virat Kohli. Babar’s done that for six to nine months so far. He just needs to be consistent for a longer period of time.”

AWS to invest Rs 20K crores in Hyderabad

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest Rs 20,761 crore to set up multiple data centres in Hyderabad, the Telangana government announced on Friday.

Telangana’s Minister for Information Technology and Industry K.T. Rama Rao said this would be the largest foreign direct investment in the history of Telangana.

AWS will set up Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region with three Availability Zones (AZs). It is expected to start operations by mid of 2022.

The AZs consist of multiple data centres in separate distinct locations within a single region that are engineered to be operationally independent of one another with independent power, cooling, physical security, and connections via a low-latency network.

Rama Rao said the investment from AWS would position Telangana as one of the preferred destinations for other companies that are looking to set up data centres in the future.

“This investment from AWS is going to be the largest FDI that the state has attracted since the inception and will act as a strong anchor for attracting other technology investments,” he said

Rama Rao had met officials from AWS during his Davos visit earlier in the year and subsequently arrived at the closure on the investment in a swift manner, an official statement said.

KTR, as the minister is popularly known, said that AWS choosing Hyderabad as their preferred destination speaks volumes about the swiftness with which the government operates and also the transparency in the system. “This investment further strengthens the existing relationship that Telangana enjoys with Amazon. We, at Hyderabad, are already hosting the largest office campus of Amazon,” he said.

The establishment of data centres like AWS is expected to support Telangana’s digital economy and IT sector in a multi-fold way. The new AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region will enable more developers, startups, and enterprises as well as government, education, and non-profit organisations to run their applications and serve end-users from data centre located in India.

The establishment of data centres in a region will increase the operations of sectors such as e-commerce, public sector, banking and financial services (BFSI), IT, and more, the government said.

Telangana is one of the most progressive states with policies targeted specifically towards advancing the growth of IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) companies in India. Hyderabad is a city that recorded the highest growth rate in the IT sector over the years and is home to many innovative startups, enterprises, and a skilled workforce.

The government claimed that AWS chose Hyderabad because of the support provided by the government of Telangana, robust policy framework, and because it best met the rigorous requirements for an AWS Region.

We will come back strongly: Shreyas

Delhi Capitals (DC) will need a strong mindset when they play Qualifier 2 on Sunday, having suffered a 57-run thrashing at the hands of the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the first Qualifier, said captain Shreyas Iyer.

“I don’t want to speak negatively about the team, but going forward it’s important to come with a strong mindset. It’s never too late, and we’ll see to it that we come back strongly,” said Iyer after the match.

Chasing a target of 201, DC were reduced 0/3 by Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult in the first two overs of their innings and could not recover from the early blows.

DC looked capable of restricting MI to a par score in the middle overs before Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya smashed more than 70 runs in the last five overs.

“I think we were on top when we got two quick wickets, and they were 102-4. We could have capitalised more at that time, and gotten two more wickets — maybe we could’ve chased around 170, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Every night can’t be yours,” said Iyer.

“We keep talking about the opportunities that we get and it’s important to have a good mindset. It’s not easy to be in the bubble and follow the same routine, but the practice we have done over the last few days, I’m really happy with the boys and their preparations.”

‘Game against DC was our best so far’

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma said that their performance against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Thursday in the first Qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was probably their best so far. Their 57-run win helped seal passage to a second consecutive IPL final.

“I guess this was our best so far. The way we came out with the intent. The way de Kock and Surya batted after we lost a wicket in the second over, the way we closed out, and then the clinical bowling. We never had any target in mind because we are a different team, and we want to play in a different way,” said Rohit at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya’s late charge helped MI score 200/5 in their 20 overs after which DC were torn apart by Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult to be restricted to 143/8.

“In T20 we always talk about momentum. We never want the momentum to shift towards the opposition. Ishan has been in great form so we wanted him to be positive. So the message was clear to him in the timeout. Please don’t be afraid to put the pressure back. Back your instinct,” he said.

Boult and Bumrah are two different kinds of bowlers and have done well to adapt to the way MI want them to play, said Rohit.

Boult had to leave the field after his first two overs but the MI captain said that the New Zealand pacer should recover in time for the final.

“I have not seen Trent yet but he looks okay. It is a big game coming up but we just wanted him to be okay for the next game. He looks okay. I am sure he will be on the park on the 10th. When you have bowlers like Bumrah, it makes your life easy. And Bumrah and Boult are in top form. When they play for different countries and franchises, they have different plans. Hats off to them for buying into our plans and executing them so well,” he said.

Uber expects to recover after $1.1bn loss in Q3

Ride-hailing major Uber lost $1.1 billion over the last three months, with its adjusted net sales down 20 per cent compared to the third quarter of 2019. Monthly gross bookings in its ride-hailing division fell 50 per cent in the July-September quarter.

The month of September was slightly better and 80 million people generated more than 425 million trips or deliveries across its platform.

“Despite the volatile environment, we steadily recovered gross bookings throughout the last few quarters with September run rate gross bookings reaching nearly $65 billion, down just 6 per cent compared to last year,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told analysts over the conference call on Thursday.

“What I’m even more proud of, though, is that we connected 3.2 million drivers and delivery people to earnings opportunities and over 560,000 restaurants and small businesses to their customers during an unprecedented economic crisis,” he informed.

Uber brought in $2.8 billion in adjusted revenue, an 18 per cent decline year over year.

“As the world returns to normal, we think there will be a margin upside as the cohort of riders that kind of comeback represent a more fulsome kind of example of the ridership that we had pre pandemic,” Khosrowshahi said.

Gross bookings in Uber Eats grew 135 per cent year over year, thanks to increased demand for food and grocery deliveries.

The company acquired Postmates for $2.65 billion, and recently launched an on-demand grocery delivery service in Latin America and Canada as part of its acquisition of Cornershop.

Uber and Lyft got a major relief in California after a ballot measure went in their favour exempting them from a state law to treat drivers as employees.

The supporters of the ballot initiative called California Proposition 22, or Prop 22, spent over $200 million to keep their gig workers classified as independent contractors in California.

TikTok joins the fight against Republican misinformation

Chinese short-video making app has joined the ongoing social media war with US President Trump who is declaring premature victories, saying it has pulled down videos spreading election misinformation from two Republican-supporting accounts — The Republican Hype House and The Republican Boys.

The videos by Republican Hype House and the Republican Boys were spreading false claims about “election fraud” as the vote counting was still underway.

“These videos have been removed for violating our policies on misleading information,” TikTok said in a tweet on Thursday.

However, Taylor Lorenz, who is a reporter with the New York Times, tweeted: “TikTok removed the initial videos but the Republican Boys account is still active and they just posted another video spreading the same voter fraud conspiracies. The new video has already amassed thousands of views”.

TikTok maintained that it has removed the videos in question for violating its policies against misleading information.

Both Twitter and Facebook were busy flagging Trump posts claiming ‘big wins’ and ‘voting fraud’ amid the uncertainty around who will be the next US president.

The Chinese short-video making app recently got another reprieve from the ban imposed by the Trump administration in the US.

A federal judge in Pennsylvania blocked the government from moving ahead with restrictions that would have effectively shut down the app from November 12.

The ruling came from a lawsuit filed by three TikTok creators who were concerned that the ban would prevent them from earning a living.

National car racing 2020 set to go behind closed doors

After a nine-month break, the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Car Racing Championship 2020 will resume in a bio-bubble at the MMRT circuit on Saturday and behind closed doors necessitated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

MMSC conducted the first round of the National Drag Racing Championship for two-wheelers last month and thus took the lead to resume motorsport activities in the country following easing of restrictions.

“It has been a tough year for everyone due to the pandemic, but after the government eased restrictions and allowed resumption of sporting activities, we conducted the National Drag races last month without incident,” said Vicky Chandhok, chairman of the meet.

“This weekend, we go a step further by resuming the four-wheeler championship, again with protocols in place with no compromise on safety and health of all involved by implementing temperature check, hand sanitisation, wearing of masks and physical distancing,” he added.

The weekend card includes triple-headers in the popular Indian Touring Cars (ITC), Super Stock and the Indian Junior Touring Cars categories, as also the MRF Saloon Car Championship, featuring Toyota Etios, making its debut in the national championship, while the Formula LGB 1300, will have four races.

Going into the second round, Race Concepts (Bengaluru) drivers, Arjun Balu (Coimbatore) and Rithvik Thomas (Bengaluru) head the ITC and Super Stock classes, respectively, with 50 points apiece after scoring a double each in the opening round in February. The Formula LGB and the MRF Saloon Car Championship classes will have their first runs of the season this weekend.
