Saudi launches project to revive historic Jeddah

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of a project to revive historic city of Jeddah, state media reported.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the project, launched on Monday, aims to develop the site into a hub for business, cultural projects and a destination for entrepreneurs.

The area contains more than 600 heritage buildings, 36 old mosques, five markets and ancient corridors and squares, reports Xinhua news agency.

The 2.5 square km project will be developed over the next 15 years and the renovation process would be carried out per international standards.

The site that was a route for pilgrims will include waterfronts, green spaces and open gardens covering 15 per cent of the total area.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture announced in its 2018 plans to transform Jeddah’s old city into an open-air museum by creating a pedestrian route across the area.

The area, dates back to the 7th century, was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 2014.

Jeddah’s, the Kingdom’s second largest city, is the principal gateway to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, located just 65 km to the east, while Medina, the second-holiest city, is located 360 km to the north.

China In A Fix As Taliban 2.0 Show Its True Colours

Will or won’t China take cognizance of the threat posed by Taliban 2.0 which has created hell for the people of their own country. So much so that most of Afghans are desperately trying to flee from their own country because they fear for their lives? …. A special report by Dr Sakariya Kareem

China, set to play a big role in Afghanistan faces challenges from Jihadi Taliban. The terror group which swept into Kabul a fortnight before the evacuation of the US and NATO forces from Afghanistan on August 31, has gone on a charm offensive. Despite the assurance that it would now respect freedom, equality and basic humanity, the new `Taliban 2.0’ is doing just the opposite.

It has intensified its search for Afghans who dared to work with UK, US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. Taliban fighters are going door-to-door to threaten relatives of civil servants, interpreters and other consular staff, while other militants are even stopping people outside Kabul airport. Taliban which insisted that it is a new organisation from the despotic jihadists of 20 years ago is no different. Its fighters are as bloodthirsty and tyrannical as they were two decades ago.

The rapidly evolving situation in Afghanistan is a matter of grave concern for the world community. Under Taliban control there is a significant risk of serious human rights abuses.

Human rights groups revealed that Taliban fighters have massacred nine ethnic Hazara men after taking control of the country’s Ghazni province last month. Eyewitnesses have shared harrowing accounts of the killings.

Amnesty International revealed that six men were shot and three were tortured to death, including one man who was strangled with his own scarf and had his arm muscles sliced off during the atrocity, which took place between 4-6 July in the village of Mundarakht, Malistan district. One regional police chief who stood against them was executed in cold blood by the Jihadi group.

Shocking video footage being circulated on the internet shows the kneeling handcuffed and blindfolded figure of General Haji Mullah Achakzai, chief of Badghis Province near Herat, being gunned down in a hail of bullets.

Taliban who had brutally oppressed women and allied themselves with Al Qaeda terrorists has no respect for women’s rights.

Zia Shahreyar recently tweeted.  “A Taliban official in an interview in Kabul on the importance of Hijab: “Do you buy a sliced melon or an intact melon. Of course the intact one. A woman without Hijab is like a sliced melon.”

Given these circumstances, it won’t be wrong to say that under the Taliban, Afghanistan is ready to become a beacon of jihad and the galvanising force for other gun-toting non-state actors to take on their governments particularly in Africa and Asia.

Analysts say that If the Taliban is weak in its approach then the clout of Pakistan, its mentor, will become stronger and if the Taliban is strong then it will press for Pashtun rights way beyond the Durand Line and destabilise Islamabad. This will have an impact on the Middle East.

As far as China is concerned, it is ready to play a big role in n the “rebuilding, rehabilitation, reconstruction of Afghanistan”.

Will or won’t China take cognizance of the threat posed by Taliban 2.0 which has created hell for the people of their own country. So much so that most Afghans are desperately trying to flee from their own country because they fear for their lives?

Afghan women are unsure of right to live life with dignity. Afghan journalists are facing risks.

It won’t be wrong to say that under the Taliban, Afghanistan is ready to become a beacon of jihad and the galvanising force for other gun-toting non-state actors to take on their governments particularly in Africa and Asia

The Taliban has imposed a ban on mixed classes and stated that Afghan women will be allowed to study at universities under Taliban rule — but not in the same room as men. The Taliban had stated in mid-August after regaining control of the war-torn country that the role of women — including their right to work and education, as well as how they dress — has yet to be decided.

Can China completely ignore chilling stories of innocent men, women and children whose rights have been openly abused by the militant organisation? Ironically, China‘s own record of human rights violations has brought global criticism. Will China give preference to economic interest and ignore new rulers conduct with their own people.

Can China completely trust the Taliban’s promises? How will China engage the Taliban? Governments across the world are grappling with the new rulers there, especially their promises that they will pursue more moderate policies and stop any violence spilling abroad. For China, it will be the biggest challenge to deal with the Taliban-led government? Though China has claimed it has won assurances from the Taliban that Afghan territory will not be used as a staging ground for attacks inside China, its sway over the group is unclear.

Kia Corporation has today announced the arrival of the K8 to the Middle East region, the first model to arrive following the rebirth of the Kia brand and one that exemplifies the automaker’s new purpose and ambitions for the future.

The K8 represents a new model name for Kia and is the first to show the brand’s new design identity as well as the contemporary new Kia logo. The official launch of the K8 in the Middle East region will take place on September 15, 2021. Aside from Korea, the car will be mainly sold in the GCC with KSA being the focus market.

Kia K8 Exterior

With a focus on modern, premium quality and dynamic performance, the K8 moves forward in the sports sedan space and will build on the success of the K7(known as Cadenza in some markets), continuing Kia’s rise towards excellence in the segment later this year.

“Being Kia’s flagship sedan in the MEA region and a representation of our new brand direction, the K8’s launch is a hugely significant moment,” commented Yaser Shabsogh, Chief Operating Officer at Kia Middle East and Africa. “This is the first model to showcase Kia’s latest design identity and new logo, but this is only scratching the surface of what this model is capable of. Every inch of the K8 has been designed to excite, from the striking design to the sophisticated technology and sublime performance.”

Exterior design: embodying an exciting new future

Taking on an all-new name and the first model to be launched following Kia’s recent rebrand, the K8 has been designed with the future in mind.

Kia K8 Interior

At the front sits a new signature frameless ‘tiger nose’ grille that gives the K8 presence and authority. The frameless grille, which is integrated within the front bumper to give a clean yet expansive look, features an intricate diamond lattice designed to express the movement of light. The front lamps include a turn signal that resembles a star could.

Symbolically pointing the way forward – and sitting proudly at the very front of the K8, just above the reimagined ‘tiger nose’ grille – is Kia’s contemporary new logo that expresses ‘symmetry’, ‘rhythm’ and ‘rising’ elements, embodying Kia’s confidence and renewed commitment to customers.

The elongated K8 (5,015mm) features a sporty side profile with a dynamic character line that runs the length of the sedan and takes inspiration from yachts sailing across calm waters. A chrome finish runs along the DLO (Daylight Opening) line and the bottom of the doors, and finishes its journey at the rear lamp – adding confidence and gracefulness to the side of the sports sedan.

Kia K8 Exterior

Completing the progressive yet elegant front and side profile is a dynamic and muscular rear-end that re-interprets the sedan of today as a modern ‘fastback’ passenger car. Strong, dropping shoulders add to the drama of the K8 at the rear, while a clean tailored spoiler beautifully finishes the sporty, low roofline.

Running below the spoiler lip is a futuristic-looking horizontal taillight that carries across the jewel patterned arrangements from the front and side and connects the K8’s next-generation LED rear light clusters.

The 3D vertical clusters hug the corners of the K8, emphasizing clean, angular lines at the rear and further adding depth and width to the rear of the car.

The Kia’s new logo and first-ever K8 badge sit at the rear just below the horizontal light dash.

Kia K8 Interior

All-new car, all-new name

The introduction of an all-new model name – the K8 – is part of Kia’s brand transition and represents the premium space in which the new sports sedan will occupy.

The K8 will offer a comfortable yet high-performance driving experience that will complement the simple, ergonomic ‘first class’ interior. The new model signals an upward journey in design, technology and modernity, delivering a class-leading package that redefines the meaning of sports sedan.

Saudi Air Defence intercepts three ballistic missiles launched by Houthi militia

The interception caused debris to scatter across the (Dahyat Al-Dammam) neighbourhood, which resulted in the injury of two Saudi female and male children… reports Asian Lite News

Saudi Air Defence has intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles and three bomb-laden drones launched by the Houthi militia towards the Eastern Province, Jazan and Najran.

Brigadier General Turki Al-Malki, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence, in a statement carried out by official news agency (SPA), said, “Saudi defences have intercepted and destroyed on Saturday evening a ballistic missile launched by the terrorist, Houthi militia from Sana’a using civilian objects as a launch site towards the Eastern Province of the Kingdom.”

The interception caused debris to scatter across the (Dahyat Al-Dammam) neighbourhood, which resulted in the injury of two Saudi female and male children, and minimal damages to 14 houses, he added.

“This brutal, irresponsible behaviour by the militia, through the attempted targeting of civilians and civilian objects, contradicts all divine teachings and humanitarian principles, and reflects the reality of the military operations’ conduct on the ground; as the militia’s positions in the battlefronts have severely deteriorated, and it has suffered heavy losses in key field commanders,” read the statement.

“The Ministry of Defence will undertake all necessary and deterrent measures to protect its territory and national capacities, stop these hostile, cross-border acts of aggression and safeguard civilians and civilian objects under the customary International Humanitarian Law,” it concluded.

Gulf for Good mark 20th Anniversary

Gulf for Good, a UAE non-profit organistaion celebrates 20th anniversary by supporting children around the world…reports Asian Lite News

Gulf for Good, a UAE non-profit organisation which supports sustainable charity projects for children and promotes wellbeing through life changing experiences, has celebrated its 20th anniversary of implementing sustainable projects in the developing world, to help make a real difference in the lives of underprivileged children. Established in March 2001 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, former Chairman, Brian Wilkie MBE, James Berry and Paul Oliver, Gulf for Good was first inspired by the requirement to raise funds to buy an ambulance for a war-torn community in Namibia. This saw 49 people climb Mount Kilimanjaro and raise enough money to buy four brand new Land Rover ambulances which were distributed to hospitals in Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya.

During its 20 year legacy in the UAE, Gulf for Good has organised more than 91 challenges, with over 1,585 participants, in 27 countries, in support of 61 children’s charities; raising close to US$4 million to build schools, children’s homes, hospitals and more, changing the lives of countless children around the world. In 2020 alone during the midst of the pandemic crisis, Gulf for Good still managed to raise over half a million dirhams for children in need (585,000AED), and provided emergency relief and COVID support to its charity projects when they needed it the most. Gulf for Good has also excelled in diversifying its offering during the pandemic with the launch of its charity retail store Thrift for Good, reselling preloved items and donating  profits to Gulf for Good charity projects.

Gulf for Good mark 20th Anniversary

To mark the 20 year celebration, Gulf for Good will host an exhibition between mid-October and mid-November, which will showcase not only Gulf for Good’s impact during the past two decades, but also shine a light on the charities and supporters during the journey.

Chairwoman of Gulf for Good, and 18-time Gulf for Good challenger, Anne Edmondson, said:

“Gulf for Good continues to empower people to make positive changes to their lives and to improve the quality of children’s lives around the world. Throughout the past twenty years, we have supported numerous sustainable charity projects which have had a significant impact on underprivileged children, providing them with access to education and improved hygiene facilities. Our 20th anniversary is not just a milestone for us as a non-profit organisation, but for our whole community which has supported us through our international challenges, UAE day hikes and training, events and CSR activities, which have all contributed to our success in supporting projects around the world. As we look to the future, we are excited to continue enriching communities and corporations by challenging them to take action, providing opportunities to inspire people to help, and most importantly, supporting sustainable charity projects for children,” said Edmondson.

Qatar working with Taliban to reopen Kabul airport

Turkey could be providing the potential technical support to restart operations at the airport…reports Asian Lite News

Qatar Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Thursday informed that the state is discussing with the Taliban to reopen Hamid Karzai International Airport.

Turkey could be providing the potential technical support to restart operations at the airport, Al Jazeera reported citing Abdulrahman Al Thani.

“We are working very hard (and) we remain hopeful that we will be able to operate it as soon as possible… Hopefully in the next few days, we will hear some good news,” the Qatari foreign minister said at a press conference with his British counterpart Dominic Raab in Doha.

Meanwhile, Raab also said that there is a need to engage with the Taliban in Afghanistan, but Britain has no immediate plans to recognise their government.

“UK is not going to recognise the Taliban anytime in the foreseeable future”, adding that he will judge Taliban by their actions, not by their words.

Raab arrived in Qatar on Thursday morning to discuss the Afghanistan situation with Qatar Foreign Minister in Doha.

In another recent development, Taliban Political office Deputy Head Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai on Wednesday met Turkey’s Ambassador to Qatar Mustafa Goksu at the Taliban’s office in Doha.

According to Taliban spokesperson Mohammad Naeem, Turkey’s Ambassador to Qatar Goksu promised that Turkey will continue its relations and cooperation with Afghanistan, reported TOLOnews.

The Taliban on Wednesday also informed that supreme leader Haibatullah Akhunzada will be the Head of the new Afghan government.

Reports also indicate that there will also be a Prime Minister post in the next government in Afghanistan, Tolo News reported.

Meanwhile, Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan, stressed that while the UN remains “determined to deliver”, more funding is needed to reach millions who depend on aid to survive.

He reported that more than half of all under-fives are suffering from extreme malnutrition, and more than one-third of citizens are not getting enough to eat.

“It is extremely important that we prevent Afghanistan from descending into a further humanitarian catastrophe by taking the necessary steps to provide essential items which this country needs right now. And that is to support food, health and protection services, and non-food items, to those who are in extreme need,” Alakbarov said while speaking from the capital, Kabul.

In recent days, the UN has flown medical supplies into the Mazar-i-Sharif airport in northern Afghanistan, while some 600 metric tonnes of food were delivered by trucks coming over the border from Pakistan. (ANI/IANS)
