Raveena on Rapid Costume Changes for ‘Shehar Ki Ladki’

The actress revealed that her co-star Suniel Shetty would have to wait there in the same position to continue the shot…reports Asian Lite News

Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon took a trip down memory lane and recalled how she just took three to four seconds to shoot for the iconic track “Shehar Ki Ladki” from the 1996 film “Rakshak”.

Raveena in an interview on bbc.co.uk was seen talking about the making of the song, which she described as a “favour to a friend”.

She said: “I remember shooting this and enjoying every bit that was actually done as a favour to a friend because their movie was stuck.”

When asked if she agreed on the wig, Raveena said: “Yeah, I was the one who decided all the looks. The thing about these looks that you see we used to change in three to four seconds flat because you remember these top block shots where he is doing ‘hi how are you?’ And then I come in one change and in an instant there is another change.”

The actress revealed that her co-star Suniel Shetty would have to wait there in the same position to continue the shot.

“So, Suniel had to wait there with his hand till I ran into the van, changed and came back. So everybody says that she is the fastest ever to get ready and come back on the set because he would just have to hold like that.”

“That is called stop blocks and then I would come in again and give another shot and then Suniel would wait till I come again. So, that is how we shot that song,” she added.

Talking about “Rakshak”, the action thriller film directed by Ashok Honda, was a remake of the Tamil film “Honest Raj”. It also featured Karisma Kapoor, Raghuvaran, Sonali Bendre, Alok Nath and Aruna Irani.

Actress Taapsee Pannu, who has two films lined up to release this month, has shared her newfound appreciation for sarees and how they have helped her discover a different side of her personality.

Taapsee revealed that wearing sarees, which are a traditional part of Indian attire, has introduced her to a new aspect of herself and also shared that it’s truly ‘comfortwear’.

The actress said: “I think I discovered a new side of my personality. When I embraced wearing sarees, and by sarees, I don’t mean the ones that people generally wear on red carpets or special occasions or festivals. I’m talking about the daily wear sarees.”

Meena Kumari: A Legacy of Tragic Roles and Real-Life Woes

The air of sadness that surrounded her – despite the best efforts of her film industry friends and well-wishers like Nargis to dispel – had a great deal to do with the vicissitudes of her forlorn life…writes Vikas Datta

The 10th Filmfare Awards in 1963 had the first ever – and only – instance of one actor scooping up all the nominations in a category. Hindi films’ “Tragedy Queen” Meena Kumari, known for portraying a wide gamut of wronged and long-suffering yet stoic Indian women, was the only contender for Best Actress – for “Aarti”, “Main Chup Rahungi” and “Saheb Bibi Aur Ghulam”.

She won for period tearjerker – and uncannily autobiographical – “Saheb Bibi Aur Ghulam”, in which she portrayed a lonely and melancholic woman who sets on her own self-destructive part to keep up with her dissolute husband. Meena Kumari played the role with such aplomb that it is hard to believe that she was not even 30 at that time.

This was her third Filmfare Award, after she won the inaugural award for Best Actress (1954) for “Baiju Bawra” (1952) and then, the 1955 edition of “Parineeta” (1953) – both scarcely much happier films.

It was curious but the scarcely four-decade-long lifespan of Meena Kumari, born as Mahjabeen Bano on this day (August 1) in 1933, was no less tragic as her roles in several iconic classics, spanning “Baiju Bawra” to “Dil Ek Mandir” (1963) to “Pakeezah” (1972).

Her penchant for playing a brace of misfortunate women – usually in thrall to a dominant, or tyrannic male figure, was compounded by the fact that her grief did not end when the shooting was done.

However, the main misfortune was that Meena Kumari had no need to get slotted as a tragedienne. She could do comic roles with panache too — as seen in films like “Azaad” (1955), Miss Mary” (1957), “Shararat” (1959), and “Kohinoor” (1960) — but never got much of a chance in this genre.

The air of sadness that surrounded her – despite the best efforts of her film industry friends and well-wishers like Nargis to dispel – had a great deal to do with the vicissitudes of her forlorn life.

She was abandoned at birth by her father – before a twinge of conscience made him return, and her childhood was cut short by her parents’ demand that she work to support the family – she was just four when her parents, stage artistes Ali Bux and Iqbal Begum took her around to various studios to convince filmmakers to feature her!

She was six when director-producer Vikram Bhatt featured her as the hero’s daughter in his costumed drama “Leatherface” (1939), where she was credited as “Baby Meena”. After a stint as a child artiste, it was Bhatt who eventually made her a household name with “Baiju Bawra”, opposite Bharat Bhushan, where she held her own despite its stellar music.

The same year, she would go on to marry filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, 15 years her senior, but the marriage soon went on the rocks as he tried to set rules for her film career and even allegedly mistreated her, and they eventually separated.

Then, a fairytale romance soured too, due to the machinations of jealous outsiders, and she was starved of genuine love and support. This led to a habit of heavy drinking that ultimately proved fatal when she was in her prime.

However, all this did not affect her onscreen performance. Even as her personal life went miserable, Meena Kumari went on to set milestones in Indian cinema with her roles in “Halaku” (1956), “Yahudi” (1958), “Char Dil Char Rahen” (1959), “Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi” (1960), the three Filmfare Award nomination roles of 1962, “Benazir” (1964), “Bahu Begum” (1967), “Mere Apne” (1971) and eventually her swan-song, the long-delayed “Pakeezah”, completed just before her death in 1972, aged just 38.

Her strong roles and fame made even established male stars chary of appearing opposite her, with her unlikely biographer, journalist Vinod Mehta, noting that even Dilip Kumar, no less a purveyor of cinematic tragedy, grew flustered in her presence and Raaj Kumar frequently forgot his dialogues.

But despite her stature, she was always helpful to newcomers, and some of the earliest successes of Balraj Sahni, Shammi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra and even Vinod Khanna (“Mera Apne”, 1971) were opposite her.

Intelligent and sensitive, Meena Kumari did not remain entirely passive and had one avenue of solace and self-expression – Urdu poetry, where under the pen name “Naaz”, she could fashion some imaginative and striking imagery or convey motifs of endearing wistfulness or restrained sadness.

“Shamaa hoon, phool hoon, ya ret pe qadmon ka nishaan/Aap ko haq hai mujhe jo bhi ji chahe keh le” is a couplet that uncannily echoes the crushed, social-conforming, desire-denied woman she played in countless tear-jerkers

“Ab yahaan kuch nahi sannata hi sannata hai/Dekh ke veerana log abh bhi yehi kehte hai/Kisi dulhan ka maqbara hai yeh khandar to nahi!” could be her self-epitaph.

Saira Banu Shares Heartfelt Memories with Manoj Kumar

Saira then walked down memory lane and explained how she became a part of ‘Purab Aur Paschim’ despite her and Dilip Kumar’s decision about her not working in films after their marriage…reports Asian Lite News

Veteran actress Saira Banu, who is known for sharing anecdotes from her life and about her late husband, the cinema icon Dilip Kumar, penned a heartwarming note for Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner and Padma Shri Manoj Kumar.

On Wednesday, the actress took to her Instagram and shared a bunch of throwback monochromatic pictures featuring herself, Dilip Kumar and Manoj Kumar.

The actress penned a long note in the caption and recollected how her husband and Manoj would often bond over kites and different kinds of omelettes.

She wrote: “Soon after my first film, I received so many offers amongst which was ‘Shaadi’. Here for the first time, I played opposite Manoj ji. I was a very shy youngster and I had this peculiar habit of really being awkward on the sets while doing romantic numbers. Manoj ji is very understanding he would quietly just move away from the set while my solo shots were being filmed. We were both people of very few words but worked comfortably together.”

She shared that her husband was Manoj’s idol: “They were close and would always venture to make different types of omelettes, fly kites, and indulge in ‘Sher-O-Shayari’.”

She then shared a “big joke” about Dilip and Manoj starring together in ‘Aadmi’. During the making of the film, Manoj started to assume the gestures associated with Dilip Kumar. After which Dilip Kumar laughingly told Manoj: “Yaar tu meri tarah shots kar le, main kuch aur tareeka nikaltaa hoon (you take the shots the way I do, I’ll think of something else).”

Saira then walked down memory lane and explained how she became a part of ‘Purab Aur Paschim’ despite her and Dilip Kumar’s decision about her not working in films after their marriage.

She continued: “Sahib and I had decided that I would not be continuing with my film career after our Shaadi but behold! I had signed ‘Purab Aur Paschim’ before marriage, wherein I played a Westernised young girl against Manoj ji. Manoj ji declared that he would shelve his project if Sahib did not allow me to work on it. Later on, in the film I was unwell and Sahib told Manoj ji that we will never misunderstand if he replaces me, but Manoj ji committed that he would rather shelve the film than replace me. I will always respect him for this magnanimous gesture.”

The actress also shared that Manoj’s wife Shashi once told her if a bumble bee came into the bedroom, Manoj would go under the bed sheet and ask her to drive out the insect.

She shared another story from the sets of ‘Balidaan’ when Manoj and she were shooting in China Creek.

She shared: “Both of us were running away from the Daaku who was approaching us on a horseback and we were running away barefoot in the flowing water handcuffed to each other.”

“As the camera came on, the Bandit was whipping away in the air in pursuit of us and Manoj ji was supposed to grab the whip and stand in front of me to protect me like He Man, instead of this when the shot started Manoj ji quickly ran behind me instead of protecting me. What a laugh! In the later, years Manoj ji remained close to our family,” she concluded.

Zeenat Aman on Feeling Undervalued by Brands

The beauty pageant winner, who began her acting career in 1970 with the movie ‘The Evil Within’, took to Instagram and shared some mesmerising snaps from her recent photoshoot…reports Asian Lite News

Veteran actress Zeenat Aman on Tuesday opened up about feeling “undervalued”, sharing that she has held her own in the industry for over half a century and believes she is worth far more than the price of a designer handbag or high-heeled shoe.

The beauty pageant winner, who began her acting career in 1970 with the movie ‘The Evil Within’, took to Instagram and shared some mesmerising snaps from her recent photoshoot.

In the photos, the actress is wearing a red outfit and accessorising with black sunglasses.

In the caption, Zeenat penned a long note, stating, “Thank you, but no thank you. I can’t tell you my precise worth, but I do know when I’m being undervalued. Amid the barrage of collaboration and appearance requests that materialise in my inbox each day, there are some that stand out for unpleasant reasons. Last-minute invitations that the organiser forgot to edit (and which are addressed to another celebrity who must have declined) are mildly insulting.”

The actress continued: “Impolite emails with minimal details and brusque “share commercials” are infuriating. And shady proposals to post stories or comments without the paid partnership tag are distasteful. Yet none of these compare to the impudence of multimillion dollar brands that expect my endorsement in exchange for ‘brand association’ and a ludicrously low fee. Such luxury brands pay an eye watering penny to their ambassadors (one of whom beautifully reprised a role I originally played), and sell even their most basic item for multiple lakhs of rupees..”

The Hare Rama Hare Krishna actress added, “In their outreach to me, they do not fail to express their admiration, with generous terms such as ‘icon’ and ‘fashion inspiration’. But when it comes to actually compensating me for my time, energy, reputation, and reach… the well runs dry. I am over 70 years old, and I have held my own in this industry for over half a century. I work with what I know to be an unusual professionalism. I have a social media audience that is not only entirely organic, but so beautifully engaged. I have immense respect for myself, and for you who follow my page.”

“I am certainly worth more than the price of a designer handbag or high-heel shoe. Your turn. Tell me your story of being undervalued or standing your ground against it,” concluded Zeenat.

Actress Manisha Koirala dropped clapping emojis in the comment section, while Sushant Divgikr commented, “an icon.”

Actor Abhay Deol wrote in the comment section: “Perfectly summed up these ‘Luxury’ brands!”

Actress Sumona Chakravarti wrote: “Thank you so much for writing about this.”

Bhagyashree shared: “You are indeed an icon and will remain for years beyond.. let not these imbiciles ruffle your plume… you are an inspiration @thezeenataman.”

Rasika Dugal Praises OTT for Fostering New Talent

The actress feels “very encouraged” by the idea of how every few months there are talents which rule the roost for a couple of months…reports Asian Lite News

Actress Rasika Dugal, who essays the role of Beena Tripathi in the hit streaming show ‘Mirzapur’, believes that the OTT medium currently shows healthy signs of progress.

Having worked in the OTT space for the past decade, Rasika has been a part of shows like ‘Permanent Roommates’, ‘Humorously Yours’, ‘P.O.W.- Bandi Yuddh Ke’, and ‘Delhi Crime’ and has witnessed the growth of the OTT platform.

Talking about the medium of OTT going in the right direction, Rasika told IANS: “I think there will be both good and bad. Everybody’s taste is different, and if there’s content that’s out of the box, there will also be content that fits the box. If a space continuously allows novelty and room for new players to come in, I consider it a healthy space.”

The actress feels “very encouraged” by the idea of how every few months there are talents which rule the roost for a couple of months.

“It allows them to shine and push the boundaries. New talents mean that the audience is looking forward to novelty,” she added.

Rashika also spoke about how a platform being ruled by a few players leads to a monopoly of what is being served to the audience.

“If a medium has just 5-6 players who keep recycling the same kind of content, it monopolises the medium, which curbs its development. In that aspect, OTT has managed to stay ahead of the curve so far,” she said.

‘Mirzapur’ streams on Prime Video.
