Central Trade Unions Seek Probe into Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse

The workers have been trapped for 12 days after a portion of the under-construction tunnel collapsed on November 12…reports Asian Lite News

Ten Central Trade Unions (CTUs) express dismay over the Silkyara Tunnel collapse in Uttarkashi, citing a failure of authorities to take responsibility.

In a joint statement, CTUs highlight workplace safety shortcomings, urging the Centre to withdraw the Occupational Safety, Health, and Working Conditions Code and adopt International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions.

They criticised the delayed response to the trapped workers and call for a comprehensive investigation into planning lapses. The CTUs demand swift action, including convening the Indian Labour Conference to address worker concerns on legal codification.

Minister of State of Road Transport and Highways VK Singh and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached the Silkaya tunnel in Uttarakashi on Thursday to inspect the progress of the rescue operation of 41 workers.

Speaking to reporters about the rescue operations outside the site, CM Dhami said that 45 metres of pipeline have been laid through an auger machine to rescue the workers.

“45 metres of pipeline have been laid through the auger machine. The rescue is in its final stages. There are some obstacles,. but I hope that the workers are rescued as early as possible. Post-rescue preparations have been done”.

Speaking on the post-rescue operations, CM said, “Ambulances and hospitals are ready for their (workers) check-up and treatment”.

He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is receiving updates about the multiple rescue operations on a daily basis.

“PM Modi is taking updates on the rescue every single day. He took the update today as well. Our experts are working day and night to rescue the workers,” He said.

The workers have been trapped for 12 days after a portion of the under-construction tunnel collapsed on November 12.

Meanwhile, Chanchal Singh Bisht, a family member of one of the trapped workers, said while speaking to ANI, “My cousin is inside. It looks like he will come out today… I had a conversation with him, he asked me to go home and said that he was fine.”

Earlier, medical equipment reached the site as efforts to rescue 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi continued on the 12th day on Thursday.

According to officials, the workers are expected to be pulled out from the collapsed tunnel today.

The workers have been trapped since November 12, when the under-construction tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot got blocked due to debris falling in a 60-meter stretch on the Silkyara side.

The operation to rescue 41 workers trapped inside a Uttarakhand tunnel for the past 12 days is in its critical phase.

As of midnight, rescue teams had said that about 10 metres of debris separated them from the trapped workers.

According to rescue teams, the operation involved drilling through the debris to push wide pipes for the trapped workers to walk out through.

The auger machine, which drills through about 3 metres of debris in an hour, had earlier hit a metal obstruction.

A 41-bed hospital readied at the Community Health Centre in Chinyalisaur for medical examination and care of trapped workers after they are evacuated from the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi.

Rescue workers said the workers would go through a detailed medical examination once they reached the hospital. (with inputs from ANI)

UP Govt Bans Halal-Certified Products

The ban came after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the issue…reports Asian Lite News

The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government took a decisive step against the illegal issuance of ‘Halal Certificates’, and issued an order on Saturday that forbade the production, storage, distribution, and sale of food products with the Halal certification with immediate effect, said a press release.

The ban came after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the issue, said the official statement.

According to the official release, strict legal measures will be implemented against any individual or firm engaged in the production, storage, distribution, buying, and selling of Halal-certified medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics within Uttar Pradesh. However, products manufactured for export will not be subject to the restrictions.

The press note further mentioned that the state government recently received information indicating that products such as dairy items, sugar, bakery products, peppermint oil, salty ready-to-eat beverages, and edible oils are being labelled with Halal certification.

Additionally, certain medicines, medical devices, and cosmetic products are reported to feature the Halal certificate on their packaging or labelling. However, there are no provisions for marking Halal certification on labels in the government rules related to drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics, nor is there any mention of Halal certification in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and its related rules.

Any direct or indirect mention of Halal certification on the labels of medicines, medical devices, or cosmetics constitutes falsification under the said Act, making it a punishable offence.

Similarly, according to the Act and rules applicable to food items, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, the apex body for food items, has been given the right to determine the standards of food items, based on which the quality of food items is ensured.

Halal certification, operating as a parallel system, creates confusion regarding food quality, violating government rules in this regard, said the press release.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjay Nishad, during the day, lauded CM Yogi for his dedication towards the development of the state and for keeping such conspirators and conspiracies like Halal certification in check.

“I want to thank the Chief Minister for his persistent efforts to make this state (UP) the best among all. Action is being taken against all the mafias, conmen and conspirators (under Yogi). You can see how they are deceiving by certifying products as halal. It is the misuse of words like ‘Halal’ and ‘Haraam’. There are some people who wear ‘jaalidaar’ caps and spew venom and mix it in people’s minds,” said Sanjay Nishad.

“So this government wants that in all Madrasa, schools and trust, proper education needs to be provided. Proceedings will be done against those who do conspiracies,” he added.

An FIR in this regard was registered in Lucknow Commissionerate last Friday.

According to the filed FIR, entities such as Halal India Private Limited Chennai, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust Delhi, Halal Council of India Mumbai, Jamiat Ulama Maharashtra, and others exploited religious sentiments to boost sales by providing Halal certificates to customers of a specific religion. Illegal businesses are being run for financial gain.

The complainant raised concerns over a potential large-scale conspiracy, indicating attempts to decrease the sales of products from companies lacking the Halal certificate, which is illegal. There is apprehension that this unfair advantage is being passed on to anti-social/anti-national elements.

The complainant further alleged that, under the guise of religion, unrestrained propaganda is being disseminated within a particular section of society to discourage the use of products lacking a Halal certificate.

This, in turn, harms the business interests of other communities. Such a malicious attempt not only seeks unfair financial benefits by issuing Halal certificates for items meant for common citizens but also forms part of a pre-planned strategy to sow class hatred, create divisions in society, and weaken the country.

Many individuals beyond the owners and managers of the implicated companies are believed to be part of this criminal conspiracy, with potential links to anti-national activities. (ANI)

IMD: Heavy rainfall to return in North India

Only east Uttar Pradesh is in IMD’s rainfall deficient category as it has received 29% below-normal rainfall during the same period…reports Asian Lite News

After a brief respite from widespread disruption and flooding, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates heavy rainfalls to comeback in North India on Tuesday, July 25th.

The IMD’s Sunday statement indicated an expected increase in rainfall activity over northwest India, with heavy downpours likely to occur in isolated areas across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Residents and authorities are urged to remain vigilant during this period of anticipated rainfall.

Northwest India has recorded 40% more precipitation from 1 June to 23 July at 318.8 mm. However, only east Uttar Pradesh is in IMD’s rainfall deficient category as it has received 29% below-normal rainfall during the same period.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and enquired about the flood-like situation occurring in various parts of the state due to recent heavy rainfall.

The Home Minister also spoke to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and discussed with him the water level in the Yamuna River in the national capital. Yamuna was flowing at 205.96 metres by 9 am on Sunday morning, which is further expected to rise to 206.7 metres by the evening. The water level in the Yamuna River has surpassed the danger level again.

This surge in Yamuna’s water level is primarily due to the discharge of water from the Hathnikund Barrage caused by heavy rainfall in some regions of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Shah shared the information through his Twitter post soon after having a telephonic conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister and the Delhi LG.

Amid the rain warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department for the Chamba district, the District Disaster Management Authority on Sunday issued an advisory for the citizens.

The advisory said, “1. Avoid visiting hilly areas and places prone to landslides and heavy rainfall. 2. Avoid trekking amid the inclement weather. 3. In case lightning strikes, it is safe to stay indoors for minimum next 30 minutes. 4. Do not visit river areas. 5. Pay attention to the warnings issued by the weather department. 6. Request Gram Panchayat Chieves, private organisations, tourists, and trekkers to spread the word.”

Notably, a total of 154 people have lost their lives due to the onset of the monsoon in the state since June 24, an official statement said on Saturday.

Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) said that 15 people are missing and 187 people have been injured since the beginning of the monsoon.

“So far Monsoon has claimed 154 lives since its onset on June 24 in Himachal Pradesh. Till now 15 people are missing and 187 people have been injured. In Himachal Pradesh, 592 houses have been damaged, besides 5265 houses partially damaged,” the  statement said.

Meanwhile, the met office has issued a red alert for Gujarat and Central Maharashtra today as it expects these regions to receive extremely heavy rainfall of more than 204.4 mm. From Monday to Thursday, Central Maharashtra has been placed on orange alert as rainfall in seven districts including Palghar, Thane and Raigad are predicted to be between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm.

This will be a major push for Mission Shakti.

Releasing the key exemptions being offered under the UP MSME Promotion Policy 2022, the government has announced that the state has been divided into five regions to encourage entrepreneurship in the manufacturing sector and will provide subsidies under various slabs.

The five regions in the state are going to be Purvanchal (revenue divisions of Prayagraj, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Azamgarh, Basti, Gorakhpur, Devipatan and Faizabad), Bundelkhand (revenue divisions of Chitrakoot Dham and Jhansi), Pashimanchal (revenue divisions of Agra, Aligarh, Moradabad, Meerut, Saharanpur and Bareilly), Madhyanchal (revenue divisions of Lucknow and Kanpur) and the fifth being Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar districts in the national capital region.
