Choya: A High Quality Japanese Fruit Liqueur

Choya, made from Japan’s ume fruit, is a 100% natural, vegan-friendly liqueur. Sweet and tart, it’s enjoyed straight, on the rocks, or in cocktails. Founded by the Kondo family in 1914, Choya shifted from wine to Japanese beverages and is now the world’s 7th largest liqueur producer. A feature by columnist Riccha Grrover for Asian Lite International.

In 1959 the company started production of umeshu which at that time was produced individually by each family. Today Choya is responsible for the development of umeshu into a commercially viable product. It is a brand with countrywide recognition, available across the whole of Japan and exported to over 60 countries worldwide.

The brand took its name from the combination of a Japanese butterfly species called the Gifu Chõ founded in the Komagatani area near the company’s headquarters and artefacts from the Stone Age shaped like arrowheads (called ‘ya’ in Japanese) also found there. The dual honouring of nature and local community – a key mantra ever since – became the combination of the two and Choya was born.

Ume is often known as the Japanese plum and came to Japan from China over 2,000 years ago. It is a fruit that not only tastes delicious but also has a number of health benefits being rich in potassium, magnesium and fibre. The ume fruit has an acid content of 4-5%, much higher than that found in a plum. As the ume fruit ripens, the level of citrus acid in the fruit overtakes that of organic acids. The flesh and skin from the ume fruit also contain the antioxidant polyphenol and this also increases as the fruit matures. In addition the fruit contains multiple amino acids and other organic acids such as citric acid.

There are several hundred varieties of Japanese ume fruit but Choya uses only four different varieties. Nanko-ume from Wakayama is a premium variety with plump flesh and high acidity, making it particularly suitable for umeshu.

Umeshu is the fruity liqueur made from the unripened Japanese plums, ume. Choya Umeshu uses traditional harvesting methods with the ume harvested during the summer months and carefully washed and inspected before going though a process that is similar to making gin. The unripe ume plums are soaked in sugar and shochu (Japanese clear distilled spirit) which contains about 35 % alcohol. The plums are aged with their stone intact as this adds to the flavour which also comes from the skin and flesh.

Making umeshu takes at least six months before the final product is ready for consumption.

Experts recommend ageing past nine months for optimal flavour and Choya Umeshu is aged for a minimum of 12 months. The final product will have moderate acidity and a faint aroma from the plums. The sugar and ageing from the alcohol provides a pleasant sweetness sometimes compared to almonds or marzipan.

CHOYA PRODUCTS

Choya Extra Years Aged Umeshu – a premium Umeshu made with the finest grade Nanko-ume fruit, harvested in the Wakayama region of Japan. This fruit liqueur is well balanced, sweet and slightly vicious.

Choya Single Years Umeshu – a blend of at least three ume liqueurs aged between one and two years. It is rich, aromatic and surprisingly fresh.

Choya Royal Honey Umeshu – Choya Umemshu Extra Years can be made with Royal Honey which imparts additional sweetness and a darker vanilla colour which is completely natural. It is perfect enjoyed on the rocks or with soda to release the honey flavour.

Choya Yuzu Fruit Liqueur – a sweet tasting liqueur made with the filtered pulp of the Yuzu fruit, similar in size to a grapefruit and ume fruit. A delicious citrus drink it is a classic alternative to Pimms, Summer Pitchers or great in cocktails.

Choya Ume Salut Sparkling Wine – a crisp and refreshing blend of Italian wine blended with Choya’s exotic sparkling plum wine. A wonderful marriage of Japanese and Italian wines, best enjoyed chilled as an aperitif or with your favourite food.

Metabolic Syndrome: Vital Health Checkups for At-Risk Families

This article explore the essential health screenings and assessments recommended for those at risk of metabolic syndrome….reports Asian Lite News

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of conditions — that potentially raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, also being closely linked to obesity and insulin resistance. Therefore, for families with a history of metabolic syndrome regular health checkups is vital for prevention, early detection and management of any risks.

In this article, we will explore the essential health screenings and assessments recommended for those at risk of metabolic syndrome.

Understanding Metabolic Syndrome

As stated above, metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that occur together, increasing the likelihood of developing diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.

The primary components of metabolic syndrome include:

* High blood pressure

* High fasting blood sugar

* Excess abdominal fat

* High triglycerides

* Low HDL (good) cholesterol

Regular Blood Pressure Monitoring

High blood pressure, or hypertension is known to act as one of the key components of metabolic syndrome as it often presents no symptoms until it causes health problems. Which is why regular monitoring of blood pressure is important for early detection and subsequent management. Needless to say, blood pressure readings give insight into the cardiovascular system, helping you to identify where and if change is required in your lifestyle. That is also why blood pressure screenings are vital especially if there is family history of metabolic syndrome.

Lipid Profile: Monitoring Cholesterol and Triglycerides

A comprehensive blood test that is used to measure the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood is known as a lipid profile. It is essential for assessing the risk of heart disease which is increased in individuals with metabolic syndrome. The test includes:

– Total cholesterol

– LDL (bad) cholesterol

– HDL (good) cholesterol

– Triglycerides

High levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, regular lipid profile testing is crucial and allows for timely intervention if needed.

Blood Glucose Testing: Fasting Glucose and HbA1c

High blood sugar levels is a marker of metabolic syndrome and a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Hence, testing of blood glucose becomes essential. The two main tests used to assess blood glucose levels are:

* Fasting Glucose Test: Measures blood sugar after fasting overnight — helping diagnose diabetes or prediabetes.

* HbA1c Test: Provides an average of blood sugar levels over the past two to three months — helping monitor long-term glucose control.

For those with a family history of metabolic syndrome, regular blood glucose testing is crucial to detect elevated levels early and prevent progression to diabetes.

Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference Measurements

Excess body fat around the abdomen tends to pose a risk factor for metabolic syndrome. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation that uses height and weight to estimate body fat. However, waist circumference is a more accurate measure of abdominal fat, which is closely linked to metabolic syndrome.

Monitoring BMI and waist circumference can help identify individuals at risk. A higher waist circumference is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Regular measurements can aid with necessary lifestyle changes, like dietary adjustments and increased physical activity, to reduce overall risk.

Liver Function Tests

Liver function tests (LFTs) are vital for gauging liver health, especially for individuals with metabolic syndrome, who have more of a risk of developing fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), that occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver.

LFTs measure levels of enzymes and proteins in the blood that indicate how well the liver is functioning. Regular testing is crucial for early detection of liver abnormalities, ensuring no further progression to liver issues.

Kidney Function Tests: Monitoring Creatinine and eGFR

Kidney function tests are essential for monitoring kidney health. Kidney tests typically measure levels of creatinine in the blood and calculate the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which indicates the wellness of the kidneys.

Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of kidney disease, making regular monitoring crucial, since early intervention can help prevent the progression of kidney disease, which can lead to chronic kidney failure if left untreated.

Inflammatory Markers: C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Testing

C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation in the body. Elevated levels of CRP are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, inflammation plays a key role in the development of atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque in the arteries that can lead to heart attack or stroke.

Regular CRP testing can help assess the level of inflammation in the body making it a valuable tool for ensuring preventative measures are taken by people who have a history of metabolic syndrome.

Lifestyle and Nutritional Assessments

In addition to regular health screenings, lifestyle and nutritional assessments are crucial. These involve evaluating dietary habits, physical activity levels, and other lifestyle factors that contribute to metabolic syndrome. A balanced diet, physical activity, working with a healthcare provider to develop a personalized plan, and even regular follow ups, can significantly reduce the risk of developing serious health conditions.

Conclusion: Proactive Management for a Healthier Future

For families with a history of metabolic syndrome, regular health checkups are essential for early detection and management. You can take control of your health by staying vigilant with things like blood pressure monitoring, lipid profiles, blood glucose testing, and other crucial screenings, to avoid developing complications.

For guidance on health checkups and preventive screenings, it’s recommended to consult your healthcare provider or explore reliable options such as Thyrocare packages offered by Healthcare on Time to stay on top of your health.

WHO launches global guidance to curb antibiotic pollution from manufacturing

WHO launches global guidance to curb antibiotic pollution from manufacturing New Delhi, Sep 3 (IANS) In a bid to curb the rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday published its first-ever guidance on wastewater and solid waste management for antibiotic manufacturing. AMR poses a looming threat to global health and even food security.

Medicines produced at the manufacturing sites can lead to pollution, and also spur new drug-resistant bacteria, undermining the effectiveness of antibiotics globally. “Pharmaceutical waste from antibiotic manufacturing can facilitate the emergence of new drug-resistant bacteria, which can spread globally and threaten our health. Controlling pollution from antibiotic production contributes to keeping these life-saving medicines effective for everyone,” said Dr Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for AMR ad interim. The new guidance, which comes ahead of the UN General Assembly’s (UNGA) high-level meeting on AMR later this month, provides much-needed information on the environmental damage caused by the manufacturing of medicines. It showed that consumers worldwide are unaware of how to dispose of antibiotics when they are not used, for example, when they expire or when a course is finished but there is still antibiotic left over. The new guidance covers all steps from the manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and formulation into finished products, including primary packaging. This can help “regulators, procurers, and inspectors” develop robust antibiotic pollution control in their standards. The deadly AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medicines. It can increase the risk of mortality as the infections can become difficult to treat. The WHO estimates that bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019 and contributed to 4.95 million deaths. While the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials are the major reasons for the rise in AMR, many people around the world also do not have access to essential antimicrobial medicines. –IANS rvt/

Blood cancer spread to brain can cause severe neurological problems

Blood cancer spread to brain can cause severe neurological problems: Experts New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS) Blood cancer cells can get carried in the bloodstream to the brain and can cause severe neurological problems, including visual blurring, abnormal facial twitching, and numbness, said experts on World Leukaemia Day on Wednesday. World Leukaemia Day is observed every year on September 4 to raise awareness about the disease. Leukemia is a broad term for cancers of the blood cells. It occurs when the bone marrow produces abnormal blood cells — blasts or leukemia cells. The disease affects the production of normal blood cells, essential for fighting infections, carrying oxygen, and clotting blood. Leukemia occurs most often in adults older than 55, but it is also the most common cancer in children younger than 15. “Leukaemia can impact a person in terms of neurological symptoms in multiple ways.

It can cause neurological symptoms by direct invasion of the central nervous system (CNS) or by indirect manifestations caused by coagulation abnormalities, increased clotting, or immune manifestations,” Dr Praveen Gupta, Principal Director & Chief of Neurology, Fortis Hospital, told IANS. The symptoms can include headaches, vomiting, fever, double vision or visual blurring, facial paresthesia, abnormal facial twitching, numbness, and weakness in the hands and legs. “In addition, leukaemia-related inflammation can disrupt the blood-brain barrier, worsening neurological outcomes. Whenever there is a CNS impact in leukemia, it confers a worse prognosis and requires emergent treatment,” Gupta added. According to the recently published Globocan 2022 report, leukemia is the most common type of blood cancer in India and has an incidence rate of 49,883 annual cases. It stated that the main challenge faced by blood cancer patients is the lack of potential blood stem cell donors in India. Ranjit Kumar Sahoo, Medical Oncologist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi told IANS that “Leukemias are curable”. They are majorly of two types — acute and chronic. “Chronic leukemias do not require immediate treatment, for example, CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and a fraction do not require treatment at all. It is completely controlled with a near-normal life in CML (chronic myeloid leukemia). “Acute leukemias are aggressive and require urgent physician attention. They are curable with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. A fraction might require BMT (Blood and/or Marrow Transplantation),” the expert said. Gupta said the treatment is emergent and involves immunomodulation, transplantation, medication to prevent seizures, or controlling the pressure in the brain. “Often, early intervention and aggressive management can significantly improve outcomes in these cases,” the doctor said. Sahoo said while the role of nutrition concerning “the pathogenesis of leukemia is relevant yet unclear”, “the diet during the treatment should be healthy and simple, in small amounts and frequent manner”. –IANS rvt/

Understanding Brain’s Orexin System Could Combat Obesity

Understanding what happens in the brain to facilitate this decision-making process is essential for developing new strategies to promote physical activity…reports Asian Lite News

According to the World Health Organization, 80 per cent of adolescents and 27 per cent of adults do not get enough exercise, and obesity rates are rising alarmingly among both adults and children…reports Asian Lite News

xxxx

Is your brain in a dilemma wondering if you should go for exercise or instead have those tasty extra fries? A study released by Swiss researchers on Tuesday may finally provide your answer.

Until now, science has had no idea what happens in our brain when we make this decision.

Researchers at ETH Zurich have uncovered a key factor in the brain’s decision-making process when it comes to this particular decision. Scientists discovered that the chemical messenger orexin and its neurons may be transferable to humans, explaining why some resist temptations and maintain regular physical activity.

Researchers found that mice with a blocked orexin system preferred a milkshake over exercise, while those with an intact orexin system spent more time on the running wheel and less time at the milkshake bar.

Denis Burdakov, Professor of Neuroscience at ETH Zurich, explains the significance of these findings. He notes that while many people struggle to get enough exercise, some manage to resist daily temptations and stay active.

Understanding what happens in the brain to facilitate this decision-making process is essential for developing new strategies to promote physical activity.

According to the World Health Organization, 80 per cent of adolescents and 27 per cent of adults do not get enough exercise, and obesity rates are rising alarmingly among both adults and children.

The study focused on orexin, a relatively recently discovered messenger substance in the brain. While other chemicals like serotonin and dopamine have long been known and studied, orexin’s functions are only now being clarified. The researchers found that when mice were given a choice between running on a wheel and enjoying a strawberry-flavoured milkshake, the presence of an intact orexin system significantly influenced their preference for physical activity.

The implications of these findings extend beyond basic neuroscience. Daria Peleg-Raibstein, a group leader at ETH Zurich, emphasises that this research could help in understanding and addressing the global obesity epidemic and related metabolic disorders.

By exploring how the brain arbitrates between food consumption and physical activity, scientists can develop more effective interventions to overcome barriers to exercise, particularly for those whose physical activity is limited.

The next step for the researchers is to verify these results in humans, given that the brain functions involved are known to be practically the same in both species. This could involve examining patients with a restricted orexin system due to genetic reasons or observing people who receive drugs that block orexin. Such studies could pave the way for new approaches to encourage exercise and reduce obesity rates, ultimately improving public health outcomes.

Reasons to Stretch Before and After Exercise

Stretching is a simple yet important part of any workout. Whether you’re new to exercise or have been doing it for years, stretching before and after your routine can make a big difference. Here are five key reasons to include stretching in your fitness plan.

Better flexibility and movement

Stretching helps keep your muscles flexible and improves how well you can move. Doing dynamic stretches before a workout warms up your muscles and gets your blood flowing. This makes it easier to move and helps you perform better. After your workout, static stretching keeps your muscles from getting tight and stiff.

Improved workout performance

When you stretch before working out, you prepare your muscles for action. This can help you run faster, lift heavier, and move more smoothly. Athletes who stretch often do better in their sports because their muscles are ready to work hard.

Lower risk of injury

Stretching helps protect you from injuries. Warming up your muscles and joints before exercise reduces the chance of strains and sprains. Stretching after your workout helps your body cool down slowly, preventing muscle soreness and injuries caused by tight muscles.

Better blood flow

Stretching improves blood circulation. When you stretch, your blood vessels open up, allowing more blood to reach your muscles. This brings more oxygen and nutrients to your muscles and helps remove waste products like lactic acid. Better blood flow means quicker recovery and less muscle soreness after your workout.

Mental relaxation and stress relief

Stretching isn’t just good for your body; it’s good for your mind too. Taking a few minutes to stretch helps you relax and focus on your breathing. This can reduce stress and make you feel calmer and happier. Stretching also releases endorphins, which are chemicals in your brain that make you feel good.

Keep Your Skin Glowing This Monsoon

You may not feel as thirsty as you often do during the hot weather. However, to have bright and beautiful skin, you must maintain your body hydrated. Drink at least 2-3 litres of water every day to remove toxins from your system…reports Asian Lite News

With continuous rains and unpredictable weather, this season may be challenging for our skin, resulting in irritating outbreaks and a lacklustre look. You need to understand your skin and the kind of care it needs. If you have oily skin, the key to keeping it fresh and revitalised is to incorporate lightweight products into your beauty routine. For dry skin types, the emphasis should be on maintaining appropriate moisture. Let us look at some of the monsoon skincare routines.

Clean thoroughly

During the monsoon season, dirt and grime may easily accumulate on your skin. A gentle cleaner should be a must for you. Using the appropriate cleanser for your face will also keep pollutants from plugging your pores. So, wipe your face twice a day, particularly before going to bed.

Exfoliation is must

During the monsoon months, your pores can become clogged with impurities. Proper exfoliation is needed to protect your skin from acne and other skin-related problems. A thorough scrub is required to remove all of the pollutants that have accumulated. Exfoliating your skin two to three times each week will help eliminate dead skin cells and accumulated debris.

Proper moisturisation of skin

Just because your skin feels oily and sticky doesn’t imply you shouldn’t moisturise. One of the primary causes of dull skin during the monsoon season is a lack of excellent moisturiser. Moisturisation helps your skin stay hydrated and provides your skin with the natural oils. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser that hydrates your skin.

Stay hydrated

You may not feel as thirsty as you often do during the hot weather. However, to have bright and beautiful skin, you must maintain your body hydrated. Drink at least 2-3 litres of water every day to remove toxins from your system.

Don’t forget sunscreen

Never begin the day without sunscreen on your skin. Sunscreen is essential, regardless of the weather. As soothing as overcast skies are, damaging UV rays may pass through them and damage your skin. Even on overcast days, you should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
