Iconic hairstyling trends of 2022

Women want to feel special as the bride, as they should, and for me what factors to decide on a look is a blend of personal taste, suitability, character and preferences of the bride, and most importantly how she sees herself…writes…Adhuna Bhabani

When I’m asked about seasonal trends, perhaps it’s wishful thinking on my part, but I’ve been saying for years that people need to embrace what is naturally their own.

I believe a return to the natural, in terms of texture and hairstyles, sort of mirrors what is happening in fashion right now as well. People no longer wear uniforms, which is the same type of clothing defined by a trend. Of course, there are followers and there are, sort of, leaders, but within that, there is a significant enough proportion that seems to have broken out of the pattern of seasonal trends to have an impact on fashion with different choices.

Younger people in the West, for instance, look to singer Billie Eilish, who dyed her hair a bright, almost phosphorescent green, as somebody who is a trend-setter.

Rihanna, the singer and beauty mogul, is known for creating trends with her fiercely individual style. She often catches a trend far ahead of the changes in fashion’s seasonal cycles, and makes it her own. Short hair, bright colours, braids, accessories, wraps, and even her current cut are very now. Inspired by the infamous Mullet as a nineties staple, Rihanna understands the assignment. She’s playful and experimental with her many iconic looks.

The 90’s are definitely a strong influence on shaping and leading fashion everywhere right now. Accessories like snap clips, bobby pins, and barrettes in pop-art colours are great too and are fun additions for styling. These are some of the trending looks in fashion, hair, and make-up on the international runways and editorials.

In India, long hair is part of our culture, so I feel like cutting the long hair off symbolises a kind of freedom in a way. Yet I still believe that if long hair is beautiful and in great condition, then that has its own charm. People have progressed to, at least, experimenting with hair colour and with a slightly shorter overall length of hair. Thirty years ago, I would go to a party and I was always the only one with a short haircut. I’ve grown my hair out to a mid-length, and when I go out now, I see a lot of people with a similar length of hair.

I feel hairstyles are not so definitive anymore. Its statement-making colours, rather than definitive styles, are trending. Actress Jennifer Winget was ready for a dramatic makeover, so we collaborated with Jennifer and launched our Cherry Red hair colour, and the result is fabulous. As you can see, Jennifer is a gorgeous “redhead”. Red is a popular colour this winter or even a violet-blue for our more adventurous clients. Hair colour is a great way to experience the same kind of significant, personal transformation as you would with a new cut or style.

With the winter upon us, festival season, and our great, big, Indian weddings. For a bridal look, I would work with natural texture and more realistic hair, taking weather, comfort and context as considerations, over a contrived or high-maintenance style. Women want to feel special as the bride, as they should, and for me what factors to decide on a look is a blend of personal taste, suitability, character and preferences of the bride, and most importantly how she sees herself.

A great cut, colour or style can bring a beautiful balance between the aesthetic of the bride’s bone structure, face shape, body proportions, costume and colours she will be wearing; it’s the same ideating we would go through during a consultancy for a haircut. Bridal hair, and haircuts and styles overall, can be freer, more comfortable, modern and subtly chic, while being inspired by the beauty of culture and tradition as well.

As people embrace their natural texture, it means fewer products in their hair. Our Hotshot Heat Protection Spray protects as you style with heated tools. Hotshot Hold Spray is a versatile, light-weight hairspray that will gently hold your finished look in place, and Hotshot Shine Spray adds a nice, rich, glossy salon-like finish. Protection, hold, and shine. This is what our Hotshot range of products are made for, so your hair can look and feel like you’ve just stepped out of a salon.

It’s no longer so much about trends. People are working more with their emotions in the choices they make for their looks. Everybody is really trying to do the best they can to work towards a balance in what they wear, in their hair, on their body, in their clothes, working more with their emotions and how they feel about the choices they make. Even in the beauty regimen, the move towards natural ingredients and recognising the benefits of those ingredients.

I do believe that even if there is a trend that has been created around getting closer to nature and being more in harmony with nature, it is only good that people are thinking in that direction. Then their actions are also moving in that direction all around them, whether they’re doing it because it’s a fashion trend or whether they actually believe in it. It’s a good change regardless.

Is it a “trend” or is it a “demand”? That might be the question to ask. That we are delving into other considerations and deeper conversations in the fashion and beauty space goes with the larger, worldwide trend of people being forced to think more deeply about their choices. Fashion is a thought process in which we express ourselves and our personalities because the consequences and repercussions of our choices are what we are experiencing in our world and in our time.

STUDY: Toxic elements in imported creams

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mercury is hazardous to health and has the potential to cause damage to the central nervous system, the gastrointestinal system and the kidneys…reports Asian Lite News.

A study of 15 known brands selling imported skin whitening creams in the Indian markets has found that they contained dangerously high levels of mercury, a heavy metal and neurotoxin.

“A total of 15 skin whitening creams of different brands manufactured in India, Pakistan and Philippines were enlisted for the study. Samples were collected from different cities, i.e., Mumbai, Vijayawada, Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram and tested at the Shriram Institute for Industrial Research in Delhi using Inductively-Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP- MS) by a standardized method,” Toxics Link said in its latest report “Dark truth of skin whitening creams: Presence of Mercury in skin whitening creams”.

Toxics Link is a Delhi-based environmental research organisation working on the issue of waste and chemicals for the last 20 years. Toxics Link is part of the global alliance of zero mercury Working Group and involved in this mercury policy project.

The Zero Mercury Working Group (ZMWG) is an international coalition of more than 110 public interest environmental and health NGOs from 55 countries from around the world formed in 2005 by the European Environmental Bureau and the Mercury Policy Project.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mercury is hazardous to health and has the potential to cause damage to the central nervous system, the gastrointestinal system and the kidneys.

The study detected mercury in six out of 15 samples; five samples had alarming levels of mercury ranging from 4,000 to 14,000 ppm (parts per million) and only one out of six samples had mercury concentration below 1 ppm i.e., 0.3 ppm, a release from the Toxics Link said.

The study also revealed that all the six samples containing mercury were manufactured in Pakistan, according to the labels on the packaging. “However, the test results revealed that all the samples manufactured in India had mercury below detectable limits,” it said.

India has a stringent regulation, under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules 2020, to prevent mercury from being added to cosmetics. Manufacturing and import of cosmetics containing mercury compounds are completely prohibited; but unintentional mercury is allowed up to 1 ppm.

Chandni Whitening Cream, Fresh Face, Faiza Beauty Cream, Golden Pearl Whitening Beauty Cream, Goree Day and Night Whitening Cream, Goree Beauty Cream (all from Pakistan) Kojie San (Philippines), Lotus Herbal White Glow Skin Whitening and Brightening Gel, Face Crema (India) are some of the brands.

However, the present study is an indicator that the mercury-containing products are still available in the Indian market. India has also ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which restricts mercury use in cosmetics to 1 ppm.

“It is disturbing that the mercury concentrations in some of the imported samples were found to be as high as 1,000 times more than the current permissible limit of 1 ppm. It is also important to mention that a previous study by Toxics link in 2019 had also reported high mercury concentrations in the same brands. For that study, released on Thursday, the samples were purchased from the online portals Amazon and Flipkart,” the release said.

“Availability of highly toxic and non-compliant products in shops and from online portals are serious breach of the national rules and need to be acted upon immediately by the regulators,” said Associate Director, Toxics Link, Satish Sinha.

The use of these products could result in severe health risks. Therefore, there is an urgent need for periodic monitoring of imported skin whitening creams by the regulatory authorities, to safeguard the health of the consumers. “A proper surveillance system needs to be in place to prevent high mercury-containing toxic skin whitening creams from being imported into India,” Senior Program coordinator, Toxics Link, Piyush Mohapatra said.

Skincare industry evolves into new phase

With changing consumer preferences and behaviour, there is no doubt that the skincare industry in India has evolved immensely in recent years…reports Marie Kapetanakis

Perhaps no other situation highlighted the significance of self-care more than the pandemic, and skincare forms a significant part of self/personal care. Amidst the pandemic, consumers, finding themselves confined to their homes, have had plenty of time to dedicate to caring for their skin. They’ve been finding new skincare routines and painstakingly looking for products that are best suited to their skin type and concerns because, as we know it, there’s no one-size-fits-all in skincare.

Today, consumers are significantly more aware of not their skin type and what products work best for them and address their concerns but also what they put on their skin. They assert their right to define beauty according to their own standards and only choose products that go by these standards.

With changing consumer preferences and behaviour, there is no doubt that the skincare industry in India has evolved immensely in recent years. With increased consumer awareness, easy access to various products, and a multichannel approach available, today’s consumers are certainly not prepared to settle for less, furthering the constant change in the country’s skincare market. That said, let’s have a look at how the skincare industry is evolving.

Organic products are becoming the go-to solution

The word Organic has become a criterion of sorts when consumers choose skincare products. Besides, with the informed younger generation becoming interested in practising sustainable practices, organic skincare products void of harsh chemicals that can damage our skin and overall health have become increasingly popular. So, in a nod to India’s renowned heritage, the skincare industry is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that their ingredients are natural even if they need to be sourced painstakingly. With these ingredients, brands then formulate organic, chemical-free skincare and hair care products to provide natural protection and care to customers’ skin.

Adoption of skinimalism’

The COVID-19 pandemic taught us a lesson that less is a lot more. And the lockdown and work from home culture arose the focus on being comfortable in your own skin, paving the doors to a new trend known as ‘skinimalism.’ That means focusing on the essentials and using only the products that will assist you in achieving your healthy skin goal. So today, the skincare industry is focusing on developing clean-beauty-driven skincare solutions that do not contain a host of ingredients but rather a major composition of one ingredient.

The rise of online shopping

The pandemic undoubtedly forced consumers to change their purchasing habits. They are now accustomed to this modern convenience, as it offers them a wide range of options, appealing selling factors, and global accessibility, all from the comfort of their home. And the ensuing lockdowns advanced the online aspects of the industry in all areas. So, seizing the opportunity, India’s online beauty industry has exploded. E-commerce has become indispensable for today’s beauty customers since it facilitates the availability and accessibility of different brands.

Growing demand for customized products

As touched upon earlier, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to skincare. Therefore, in order to care for your skin, you must first understand what it necessitates. But finding the appropriate product that works for you is a considerable challenge. As a result, personalized skincare products are emphasized, which provide benefits and allow customers to express themselves. Globally, personalized skincare products and services have expanded at a rate of 300 percent per year for the past two years, and experts are predicting a triple-digit rise in the next three years. This alone should be enough to explain why personalized skincare products are revolutionizing the skincare industry.

The organic and natural items will almost certainly gain in popularity as consumers’ interest in safe products has altered as they’ve better understood their skin’s necessities and preferences. So in order to stay up with the ever-changing needs of customers and to boost the beauty, wellness, and personal care industry, the new-age brands are focused on developing organic, harsh chemical-free, and cruelty-free skincare, haircare, and cosmetic goods, thereby driving the change in the skincare industry further.

Common myths related to facial care

Exfoliating your skin every day is a beauty and wellness sin! Exfoliation is the process of deep cleaning your skin by removing dirt and oil clogged in the pores…reports Ritika Jayaswal

Have you spent a considerable amount of money to buy organic skincare products without results? Ever wondered why your ayurvedic skincare products are not working? It may be because of certain skin care myths that have been imbibed in us for a long time.

If you love reading beauty and wellness articles or have been on the internet to find your best body care products or natural products for skin, the chances are that you have consumed a ton of data. Add to that midwives tales, and we are left wondering what is a fact and what is fiction.

Ritika Jayaswal, CEO & Founder, Nourish Mantra, busts some common myths related to facial care beauty products so you can move a step ahead in achieving your picture-perfect skin!

I only need to use sunscreen in summers

Winters and monsoon have little to no heat from the sun. That, however, does not mean that the sun’s rays are not present in the atmosphere. They simply aren’t very strong because of the weather. Sunscreens protect your skin from the harmful UV and UB rays of the sun which can cause skin cancer. Therefore, one must continue using a sun protection shield irrespective of the season.

I must exfoliate my skin every day

Exfoliating your skin every day is a beauty and wellness sin! Exfoliation is the process of deep cleaning your skin by removing dirt and oil clogged in the pores. Our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells. Exfoliating it every day will damage the skin and strip it off its natural oils, leaving it flaky and dry.

Using makeup is bad for my skin

A lot of dual-purpose cosmetic products come with moisturisers that nourish your skin. A good quality product does not clog your pores or trap the dirt. What does harm your skin, though, is sleeping with your makeup on! It not only causes skin breakouts but also breaks down the collagen, thereby causing premature ageing.

Expensive products mean a better product

This is not always true! What makes a product better than the other is its composition and formulation. Every skin reacts differently to different ingredients. We must choose products that work best with our skin type. You may consult a dermatologist to know more about your skin so you can pick your ayurvedic skincare products more wisely.

I have oily skin and should not use a moisturiser

Many believe that using moisturisers and creams on oily skin causes skin breakouts. Excess sebum production and clogged pores are the significant causes of acne, and your moisturiser is simply, well, a moisturiser! It nourishes your skin and keeps it soft and supple! Ensure that you use a lightweight or gel-based moisturiser for oily skin, and you are good to go.

A pea-sized amount of product is enough for my skin

Unless a product asks to use a small dollop, you must use as much as required to reap the benefits. It is not a one-size-fits-all situation with facial care beauty products. Some spread easily, while others need to be used in thick layers to work more efficiently.
