French-Indian Play ‘He-Rose’ Explores Heroism

Interestingly, both Arjuna and Achilles encounter a certain level of non-heterosexual behaviour. Arjuna discovers the femininity within while Achilles also discovers the masculinity of patriarchal understanding, and both of them break, and that’s why they have second thoughts about fighting…reports Asian Lite News

At the heart lies a profound inquiry into the nature of heroism. Drawing parallels between iconic figures such as Arjuna from the Mahabharata and Achilles from the Iliad, the theatre production ‘He-Rose’ challenges conventional notions of heroism, inviting audiences to contemplate the interplay between vulnerability and courage.

While one may wonder how the Bhagavad Gita and Iliad come together, one of the points of any storytelling — and particularly the Indian tradition of plural storytelling — is this expansion of the unspoken.

He-Rose, a collaboration between the French school ENSATT and the Indian theatre troupe Adishakti Laboratory (Auroville), the play, being presented by The Cultural French network in India and the National School of Drama (NSD) that premiered in Lyon, France a few months ago will be staged at Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh on April 17.

Written by Nimmy Raphel and directed by Vinay Kumar of Adishakti and assisted by Amaud Guennad of ENSATT, the play depicts the tragic saga of two mythological heroes, Arjuna from Veda Vyasa’s Bhagavad Gita and Achilles from Homer’s ‘Iliad’ is about two personalities from two different cultures in a realm between glory and tragedy.

Kumar, who has been doing theatre for around three decades now says, “Why cannot two stories collide, create an argument, like two storytellers from two distinct continents, talking to each other, or exchanging notes, and just looking at the futility of war. Would they not conclude that the collateral is too much to bear? Did Yudhishthira say at the end of the war that he did not want to inherit a kingdom of widows?” he asks.

Interestingly, both Arjuna and Achilles encounter a certain level of non-heterosexual behaviour. Arjuna discovers the femininity within while Achilles also discovers the masculinity of patriarchal understanding, and both of them break, and that’s why they have second thoughts about fighting.

Stressing that war always brings out archetypes, and that is the reason why a nation and pride are all interconnected, Kumar points out that while European culture, which is primarily pegged on the ‘Iliad’ as a kind of history, consistently goes back to it, “we live in a country where myths hold significant importance”.

“While there may be other characters in the play, the spotlight is primarily on Arjuna and Achilles. The most striking point is when Arjuna does not want to fight, seeing who is on the opposite side.

“In Achilles’ case, the realisation that killing is not anymore about valour or a masculine archetype, but rather it (killing) is death. It is slow. There is slashing, cutting, killing, heaving, dismembering — and if that does not move you, then you have a problem. But the moment they both encounter their feminine side, that exact sensitivity, both these archetypal male bodies do not want to continue on the path of bloodbath,” he adds.

Considering the production derives from two major works, one wonders if there were any apprehensions in heavily reinterpreting them. “We are not looking at the notions of righteousness from everybody’s perspective. In all our plays derived from mythology, what we try to do is draw out the fact that the nature of all mythical stories is to bring a philosophical debate — which is plural. And that is pragmatically inclusive. The moment that plurality of stories goes, you lose everything. So, our plays are primarily focusing on myth as a kind of starting point for the past. The present does not teach you anything, the future does not hold anything. Only the past teaches you,” asserts Kumar.

The writer of the play, Nimmy Raphel, who has been with the theatre group for the past 23 years, insists that the entire human civilization or the very idea of human civilization is pegged on a very thin line. “Stories allow you to have a jacket to start the debate. It is a framework, and also the continuity of it.”

Adding that the characters of Arjuna and Achilles have always fascinated her, and there is a need to re-look at our notions of heroes as being heroic is not valour, she says: “Both go back to war after a pause. So then, what is the understanding that we have of human progress, the humanity that we talk about? If we were to all go and do what is our dharma, then there is no humanity, no?”

For her, the play largely talks about the fact who is benefiting, and who takes the brunt of all the catastrophe. Where do women come to war? “I do not think there is any decision-making that goes to women. They always come in the end. Yes, women and children come at the end, but they suffer the most.”

Admitting that it is the utopia that we are thinking about, Raphel stresses, “I do not think the responsibility of the world lies in the artist. Because in that case, we would have been politicians.”

Childhood Lung Health

The researchers called for understanding the determinants that predict lung function growth during childhood and adolescence to prevent diseases later in adulthood…reports Asian Lite News

Increased physical activity and a higher body mass index (BMI) can help fight lung function deficits in early childhood, according to a study on Monday.

The growth of lung function declines in childhood due to allergic conditions and is a clear risk factor for chronic respiratory disease later.

The study, published in the journal Thorax, showed that higher levels of physical activity in early childhood (between the ages of 4 and 7) and higher body mass index at age 4 can help increase lung function growth.

“The key finding of our study is that low lung function in early childhood does not automatically translate into poor lung function in early adulthood, but that accelerated growth can recover early-life lung function deficits and result in normal values in adolescence,” said Sarah Koch, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal).

The study analysed data on 1,151 children and adolescents aged 4-18 years. The researchers measured lung function with spirometry, a technique that assesses lung function through the amount of exhaled air.

The researchers called for understanding the determinants that predict lung function growth during childhood and adolescence to prevent diseases later in adulthood.

“Both clinical management and public health policies should support and promote a healthy diet and high levels of physical activity in children with low baseline lung function, suboptimal environmental conditions, or early-life allergies. This can help overcome growth limitations in lung function and improve respiratory health in childhood and adulthood,” Koch said.

Alia Shines Among Time’s ‘100 Most Influential People’ for 2024

Alia is the only Bollywood actor to feature in the Time magazine list…reports Asian Lite News

Bollywood star Alia Bhatt, World Bank President Ajay Banga, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and British actor with Indian roots, Dev Patel, have made it to Time magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People’ list for 2024.

Another prominent Indian who features in the list is Sakshi Malik, India’s only female Olympic medallist in wrestling who led the protest against the alleged sexual harassment of female grapplers by former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

“Proud to be included in the 2024 #TIME100 list,” Sakshi wrote on X.

Tom Harper, the director of the streaming film ‘Heart of Stone’, Alia’s first Hollywood project, heaped praises on the actress, calling her a “truly international star”.

“Despite her fame, Alia is self-effacing and funny on sets. There is a grace to the way she goes about her work: focused, open to ideas, and willing to take creative risks. One of my favourite moments in the film came from an improvisation at the end of a take where she took the emotional thread and ran with it.

“Alia’s superpower is her ability to mix movie-star magnetism with authenticity and sensitivity. As an actor, she is luminous, and as a person, she brings the grounded assurance and creativity that make a truly international star.”

Alia is the only Bollywood actor to feature in the Time magazine list.

The other names with an India connect featured in the list include astronomer Priyamvada Natarajan, senior US Department of Energy official Jigar Shah, and chef and rights activist Asma Khan.

The also features singer-songwriter Dua Lipa, Oscar-awardee American actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Oscar-nominated actors Jeffrey Wright and Colman Domingo.

Also featured in the list are film personalities Taraji P Henson, Elliot Page, Michael J. Fox, Sofia Coppola, and Hayao Miyazaki.

Sustainable kitchen practices

The movements of chefs and kitchen staff should be synchronized, to attain a high level of efficiency. Strategic kitchen design and workflow optimization can significantly reduce the time it takes to prepare and serve dishes. This not only enhances customer satisfaction but also allows the restaurant to serve more guests with the same resources…writes Devanshi Tripathi

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the restaurant industry, the kitchen transcends its traditional role as a mere cooking space; it emerges as a dynamic nexus of efficiency and organization. As the global economy grapples with uncertainties, adaptability becomes paramount for businesses in the Food and Beverage sector to ensure economic resilience. Consequently, the imperative to streamline kitchen operations ceases to be merely a matter of convenience; instead, it transforms into a strategic initiative geared towards enhancing sustainability and bolstering the overall profitability of the restaurant business.

In this context, Devanshi Tripathi, the Founder of North Star Café, expresses her perspectives on fortifying the industry against economic challenges through the exploration and implementation of measures for kitchen efficiency. This approach is not only prudent but also represents a pivotal step in ensuring the resilience of the business.

Kitchen: The Heartbeat of a Restaurant

The kitchen is undeniably the heartbeat of a restaurant where the culinary magic takes place, breathing life into the dining experience. Beyond its functional role as a space for food preparation, the kitchen embodies the character and essence of a restaurant. It’s the creative nucleus where chefs curate flavors, textures, and majestic presentations to craft exquisite dishes that stimulate the taste buds, creating long-lasting impressions on passionate food connoisseurs. The energy within a restaurant’s kitchen pulsates with teamwork, precision, and passion, synchronizing diverse culinary talents working seamlessly to deliver a fine gourmet experience. This highlights the pivotal role of a kitchen in maintaining its status as the epicenter of a restaurant’s success, crafting not just meals but memories and elevating the entire dining journey for guests.

A Recipe for Economic Resilience

With the food-service market in India estimated to reach USD 79.65 billion by 2028, optimization of kitchen operations holds immense potential as a strategic move. Each streamlined operation, from ingredient sourcing to plate presentation, contributes to the financial benefit of establishments. Hence, the kitchen’s efficiency is a vital ingredient in the economic recipe for enduring success in the industry and here are some ways to achieve that highlighted by Devanshi Tripathi:

Inventory Management: Effective inventory management is the cornerstone of a streamlined kitchen. By implementing advanced tracking systems and technology, restaurants can monitor ingredient levels in real time, preventing overstocking or stockouts. This not only reduces waste but also ensures that resources are utilized optimally, leading to substantial cost savings.

Workflow Optimization: The movements of chefs and kitchen staff should be synchronized, to attain a high level of efficiency. Strategic kitchen design and workflow optimization can significantly reduce the time it takes to prepare and serve dishes. This not only enhances customer satisfaction but also allows the restaurant to serve more guests with the same resources.

Technology Integration: Embracing modern technology is crucial for a kitchen aiming to stand out in terms of efficiency. From automated cooking processes to smart inventory management algorithms, tech is destined to revolutionize the way 21st-century kitchens operate. Smart AI tools can also help in predicting demand, optimizing schedules and even analyzing customer preferences, allowing for better-informed predictive decisions.

Staff Training and Empowerment: Efficiency isn’t just about machines – it’s about the people who operate them. Well-trained and motivated staff can significantly contribute to kitchen efficiency. Therefore, regular training programs, clear communication channels and empowering employees to take ownership of their roles can lead to a more resilient kitchen environment.

Sustainable Practices: In the quest for efficiency, sustainability should not be overlooked. Adopting eco-friendly practices, such as reducing single-use plastic, composting organic waste and using locally sourced ingredients, not only aligns with today’s consumer values but also contributes to minimizing long-term environmental impact and associated costs.

In the challenging market of the food service industry where many external factors can impact profit margins, kitchen efficiency is becoming a necessity. By focusing on inventory management, optimizing workflows, integrating technology, investing in staff training and adopting sustainable practices, restaurants can build a resilient foundation for economic success. A well-oiled kitchen not only serves delicious meals but also ensures that resources are utilized wisely, contributing to long-term economic stability. As the saying goes, a stitch in time saves nine – investing in kitchen efficiency today is an investment in the economic resilience of tomorrow’s culinary enterprises.

Sara’s Insights on PMS and Feminine Hygiene

I try not to miss my work out any day. I exercise daily, even when I am on my period, as it boosts my mood and helps with pain relief. I incorporate light cardio and yoga during my period days…says Sara Ali Khan

Sara Ali Khan, a dazzling sensation among Gen Z, known not only for her Bollywood prowess but also for openly sharing her life journey is now the face of the feminine hygiene brand Sofy. In a light-hearted mood, Sara tells IANSlife during a conversation that some of her hits and favourite songs, such as Aankh Maare, Chaka Chak, and Ha Mei Galat, were shot during her menstrual cycle days. Read excerpt:

What are your thoughts about PMS? What is PMS for you?

Sara: Personally, it’s the intense moodiness, bloating, and ice cream cravings. I experience pangs of sugar cravings, which are, of course, due to magnesium deficiency. You should try Paalak, which is not particularly tasty, but it helps.

What would you change about the way society treats menstruation? Is there a myth about periods that you believe should be debunked?

Sara: First and foremost, it is critical to understand that menstruation is not an indicator of impurity. I believe it represents the pinnacle of femininity and fertility. I am thrilled to be associated with a brand that not only understands the needs of young girls but also educates and empowers others. Menstruation is the reason for everyone’s existence.

Do you ever miss your workout?

Sara: I try not to miss my workout any day. I exercise daily, even when I am on my period, as it boosts my mood and helps with pain relief. I incorporate light cardio and yoga during my period days.

Do you prefer XL pads or antibacterial napkins?

Sara: I prefer both, which is why I carry the Sofy Anti-Bacterial extra-large pads in my bag, which not provides spotless and comfortable periods. I prefer feminine hygiene brands that avoid the risk of leakage and are safe for health.

Any experience with unusual places where you had to change your pad or tampons?

Sara: I remember once we were travelling in Rajasthan for the shoot. So, I had to change my pad on the moving bus in the outskirts of Rajasthan. I usually carry an extra-large anti-bacterial pad to ensure a comfortable experience during periods.

Have you ever used a creative excuse to get out of a situation because of a period?

Sara: I used to do this a lot in school during Hindi class, by using the excuse of cramps.  I liked Hindi but didn’t enjoy the class.

What advice would you give to women dealing with PCOD and PCOS?

Sara: Firstly, recognize the syndrome to make sure you are aware of the changes in the body, which may include weight loss and hair loss. Exercise regularly to minimize symptoms. Try to avoid binge eating and strive to live a healthier lifestyle. And, not to forget, remind yourself that the next day will be better.

Are there any period-related mishaps or memorable incidents you’d like to share with the audience?

Sara: I’m sharing this today because all of my hits and favourite songs, such as Aankh Maare, Chaka Chak, and Ha Mei Galat, were shot during my period days.

Love and Information – A Theatrical Exploration of Modern Life

The play doesn’t limit itself to its technical uniqueness but also promises to challenge the audience by addressing a wide range of subjects covered from mental illness to privacy erosion to memory atrophy that cloud modern-day lifestyles…reports Asian Lite News

The National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai present the first-ever professional production of Love and Information, in collaboration with an award-winning director Mohit Takalkar. Written in 2012 by celebrated British playwright Caryl Churchill, Love & Information is a creative and experimental presentation that delves into the contemporary lives of the present society through an unconventional yet immersive theatrical experience.

The play is set to invite the audience to the Experimental Theatre from April 25 – 29.

Written as a series of over 50 disparate scenes divided into seven sections, the play is an exercise in reimagining the medium. The disruptive format of the script provides no stage directions, no character attributions and no notes for performance. Additionally, the play follows a non-linear narrative and is devoid of central characters, emphasizing the cumulative impact of diverse, brief scenes ranging from seconds to minutes. The scenes are of varying lengths and the structure allows for the viewer to narrow in on a world oversaturated with information. The vignettes mirror the rapid pace of channel-hopping or scrolling through social media, highlighting potential implications for relationships in an era dominated by instant gratification and short attention spans.

The play doesn’t limit itself to its technical uniqueness but also promises to challenge the audience by addressing a wide range of subjects covered from mental illness to privacy erosion to memory atrophy that cloud modern-day lifestyles.

Speaking about the first-ever professional production of Love and Information, Bruce Guthrie, Head, of Theatre and Films, NCPA, expressed, “The NCPA is delighted to welcome Mohit Takalkar to direct Love & Information by Carol Churchill. She is a true trailblazing playwright in every sense of the word and is known as something of a disruptor of English theatre. She rarely, if ever, talks about her work, where the inspiration comes from and why she does what she does. She constantly reinvents her style as a playwright and explores what more theatre can be. It is a matter of pride and joy to pull off this combination of two extraordinary artistes – writer and director to realise this quite extraordinary play. We hope that the audience will come with a curious mind and an open heart as we continue to create theatre that challenges and inspires.”

The ensemble cast comprises Ashish Mehta, Dusha Madhav, Kashish Saluja, Lovleen Misra, Mahesh Saini, Mallika Singh Hanspal, Mrinmayee Godbole, Prajesh Kashyap, Rachel D’souza, Rytasha Rathore, Siddhesh Dhuri, who will be performing around 50 scenes in rotation. Love and Information most definitely promises to be a must-attend theatrical show this summer.

How to Be There for Someone in Need

People tend to think that they need to handle those affected by burnout with kid gloves, Beschoner says. But this can be counterproductive, according to the expert…reports Asian Lite News

When a relative or friend is suffering from burnout, they need your help. Burnout is the result of a long period of stress which negatively affects your wellbeing.

While seeking professional help and being diagnosed is a first, important step, relatives and friends can also do their part to make things easier for the person affected.

The most important thing when someone close to you suffers from burnout is to be understanding, says Professor Petra Beschoner, a specialist in psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine.

“Ideally, relatives should educate themselves about the illness and organise professional help – also for themselves,” Beschoner, who heads a clinic in southern Germany, recommends.

“People who suffer from burnout often react cynically and irritably, which can be very stressful for their social environment. Those affected also withdraw. However, this should not be seen as a personal offence, but as a symptom of burnout.”

People tend to think that they need to handle those affected by burnout with kid gloves, Beschoner says. But this can be counterproductive, according to the expert.

“Relatives often tend to keep everything away from the person affected. But burnout patients in particular often define themselves by their responsibilities, so restricting their autonomy is not very effective,” she explains.

Some symptoms of burnout, like signs of exhaustion, overlap with those of depression. According to the doctor, it is therefore important that the diagnosis is always made by specialists or psychotherapists who have the necessary differential diagnostic experience.

According to Britain’s National Health Service, other symptoms of burnout include muscle pains, headaches, sleeping problems, weight gain or loss and memory problems.

Employee Experience Insights

In 2023, burnout risk remained a concern, affecting 27 per cent of employees in large Indian companies, which is three per cent higher compared to their mid-sized counterparts, a new report said on Thursday.

According to Great Place To Work’s report on IT & IT-BPM, female senior managers in particular experienced a five per cent higher burnout rate than male counterparts.

However, large organisations demonstrated a one per cent improvement in employee experience, while mid-size entities maintained a commendable 85 per cent score, surpassing their larger counterparts, the report noted.

“This year we see that the industry has experienced subtle shifts in employee perceptions as compared to the last year. While the overall employee experience saw a dip, dimensions like Pride and Fairness emerged as the highest and lowest in employee sentiment, respectively,” said Yeshasvini Ramaswamy, CEO, Great Place To Work India.

“The reduction in Camaraderie (-1 per cent) and a diminished sense of Pride (-1 per cent) among employees has shaped the overall employee experience,” she added.

The report highlighted that IT companies have been investing an average of 1.97 crore annually in training and development, underscoring the significance placed on nurturing employee growth.

In addressing the current challenges, Workplace Ikigai emerges as a holistic solution that empowers individuals to align their personal passions, cultivate meaningful relationships, embody exceptional leadership, and create an enduring impact.

About 83 per cent of Best Workplaces invest mindfully in their employees’ growth. Leadership excellence, despite being the lowest-scoring lever in Workplace Ikigai, showed an upward trend, emphasising the need for more accountability and authenticity at leadership levels, the report said.

Workplace Ikigai not only fosters employee well-being but also boosts productivity, retention rates, and innovation. Notably, in 2023, a sizable 77 per cent of IT companies monitor employee well-being, with 55 per cent employing multiple methods.

The report further mentioned that the convergence of IT workplaces and personal fulfilment is key to achieving a remarkable 1.7X higher retention rate.
