The great Indian murder based on riveting novel ‘Six Suspects’

Ajay Devgn, who has produced the show, shares, “‘Six Suspects’, as a book, intrigued and fascinated me greatly. As an ardent fan of thrillers, I am looking forward to ‘The Great Indian Murder’ as it intricately deals with a common subject like class divide and revenge but with a lot of glamour.”…reports Asian Lite News

The trailer of the upcoming thriller series ‘The Great Indian Murder’ was released on Tuesday. The show based on author Vikas Swarup’s riveting novel ‘Six Suspects’ has been helmed by Tigmanshu Dhulia.

It stars Richa Chadha, Pratik Gandhi, Ashutosh Rana, Shashank Arora, Raghubir Yadav, Paoli Dam, Jatin Goswami, Sharib Hashmi and Amey Wagh.

The show, co-written for the screen by Tigmanshu Dhulia, Vijay Maurya and Puneet Sharma, presents a gripping narrative which tracks the murder of a spoilt brat Vicky Rai, who is the son of the Home Minister of Chhattisgarh, Jagannath Rai, and the investigation that follows.

Six suspects surrounding Vicky’s murder come under the radar of the case’s investigating officers DCP Sudha Bhardwaj played by Richa Chadha and Suraj Yadav essayed by Pratik Gandhi of Central Bureau of Investigation. Using the Rashomon effect with aplomb, ‘The Great Indian Murder’ explores several versions of a single murder, a story that Sudha and Suraj weave through their investigations.

Talking about the series, director Tigmanshu Dhulia says, “While working on ‘The Great Indian Murder’, I was taken back to my love for thrillers and murder mysteries. Vikas Swarup’s ‘Six Suspects’ has been on my list of top thrillers, so envisioning it for the screen was doubly exciting for me. The story does an excellent job of blending mystery, murder and fate with a unique storyline.”

Highlighting the importance of each character in the story, he adds, “Every character in the series holds the fort with their characteristic individuality that adds to the raw eclectic feel of the series. It is unlike anything I have worked on before. It has been a great journey, and I hope the audience shows ‘The Great Indian Murder’ much love and appreciation. Disney+ Hotstar has been creating some path breaking content over the years so we couldn’t have better partners than them to showcase the show.”

Talking about her affinity for thrillers, Richa Chadha says, “Thrillers have always been an exciting genre for me – it challenges you greatly and stretches your capabilities as an actor. When I read the script for ‘The Great Indian Murder’, I knew instantly that it was a project I wanted to be a part of. There’s an intriguing story to tell here, and Tigmanshu is a brilliant director who was there for me and for the rest of the cast to guide and direct.”

She concurs with her director, “Each character in this series has an intense motive and justification for their actions – it is somewhat relatable, yet nerve-wracking. It is an exemplary example of thriller series writing which only Tigmanshu Dhulia could have pulled off. Can’t wait to see the audience’s reaction to it.”

Pratik Gandhi reveals, “I wanted to be very thoughtful about my next digital outing and ‘The Great Indian Murder’ and Disney+ Hostar seemed like the perfect choice. My character Suraj Yadav was a whole new challenge for me. He is someone who represents the law but never shies away from breaking it or mending it to ease his way.”

He adds, “This grey layer and his easy transition between the dark and light sides make him special and very human. I am extremely grateful to Tigmanshu Dhulia and Richa Chadha for constantly being by my side and helping me to interpret the character. Hope Suraj Yadav receives a lot of love and appreciation.”

Ajay Devgn, who has produced the show, shares, “‘Six Suspects’, as a book, intrigued and fascinated me greatly. As an ardent fan of thrillers, I am looking forward to ‘The Great Indian Murder’ as it intricately deals with a common subject like class divide and revenge but with a lot of glamour.”

Talking about his collaboration with Tigmanshu, he adds, “Collaborating with Tigmanshu Dhulia to bring alive this exhilarating thriller on screen was an obvious choice, given his phenomenal creation of some of the best thrillers in India. Disney+ Hotstar and I share a strong relationship and I relate to their creative ambition and ability to think big.”

Producer Priti Vinay Sinha says, “It’s been an adrenaline filled three-year journey from the day I acquired the rights of the book from Vikas Swarup to producing ‘The Great Indian Murder’ into a fascinating series with a greatly talented cast and crew. I am really excited to share our web series with the audience. Ajay and I partnering as producers under our banner ADF & RLE Media for the first time and working with Tigmanshu Dhulia and Disney+ Hotstar has been a dream run.”

Gaurav Banerjee, Head, Content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM Entertainment network, Disney Star India, says, “We are thrilled to bring yet another powerful and genre-defining story with ‘The Great Indian Murder’. Starring critically acclaimed actors and helmed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, the series’ crossover of characters from different walks of life makes it a highly intriguing title that is sure to entertain audiences across the country.”

‘The Great Indian Murder’ will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar from February 4 in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali.

The King’s Man: An action-packed period drama on spy genre

Rhys Ifans is entertaining as the villainous Russian monk Rasputin. He mesmerises the audience with his sunken kohl-laden eyes, bad table manners, and his skill of combining fighting moves with Russian dance spins…writes Troy Ribeiro

(Duration: 133 minutes.) Director: Matthew Vaughn. Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, Harris Dickinson. Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Daniel Bruhl and Charles Dance. (Rating: ***)

‘The King’s Man’ is an action-packed period drama filled with humour that is spectacularly and uniquely British.

Based on a graphic novel developed by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, this is the third film of the franchise and a prequel to its earlier two films — ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ (2015) and ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ (2017).

‘The King’s Man’ therefore is the origin story of ‘The Kingsmen’, the elite club of British spies operating independently of the government, from their headquarters that fronts as a bespoke tailor’s shop on Savile Row in the City of Westminster.

Apart from telling us how the organisation was formed, the core of this film’s narrative gives us an insight into attempts made to weaken the King of England’s power and make the sun set on the British Empire.

The film begins with a dramatic prologue. In the wilderness of South Africa, Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), an aristocrat who regrets his part in plundering Britain’s colonies and is now working for the Red Cross, promises his dying wife that he would protect their son Conrad and never let him see war again.

But 12 years later, Europe is in turmoil. Against the backdrop of World War I and the Russian Revolution around the corner, the narrative focuses on Conrad, who is keen on joining the war against the wishes of his widowed father.

Orlando and his servants Polly Wilkins (Gemma Arterton) and Shola (Djimon Hounsou), with the blessings of King George V, meanwhile, are dragged into an espionage drama that may force the American President to enter the war, thereby strengthening their side. All this forms the crux of the narrative.

The plot is fascinating and relatable as it ingeniously weaves in real-life historical moments and figures. Tom Hollander plays three major monarchs — King George V of Britain, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. They were cousins and grandsons of Queen Victoria. Tom is captivating and entertaining in each character that he portrays.

Rhys Ifans is entertaining as the villainous Russian monk Rasputin. He mesmerises the audience with his sunken kohl-laden eyes, bad table manners, and his skill of combining fighting moves with Russian dance spins.

Djimon Hounsou as Shola and Gemma Arterton as the plucky housekeeper-turned-spy have relatively little to do.

Ralph Fiennes, as the dashing superhero Orlando Oxford, plays his character straight and plain. His stern and strict father performance cum deathly spy when need be, is conventional yet rousing.

Compared to the earlier two editions of the franchise, this film is much more robust in terms of narration and tone. Despite being stylishly mounted, the first two editions were satirical and comical in their outlook, and this one seems like a historical epic.

Like most origin stories, ‘The King’s Man’, too, suffers from pacing issues. All the minor drawbacks, however, are compensated by marvellous production values, attention to historical details, and brilliantly choreographed action sequences.

Overall, ‘The King’s Man’ is an entertaining film that will appeal to history buffs.

Bhim, Marakkar nominated for Best Feature Film at Oscars 2022

Directed by Priyadarshan, ‘Marakkar’ is one of the most expensive films in the history of Malayalam cinema…reports Asian Lite News

Two Indian films — the controversial Tamil film ‘Jai Bhim’ starring Suriya and Lijomol Jose and Priyadarshan’s Malayalam period drama ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ (Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea), with Mohanlal playing the titular character — are on the list of 276 movies eligible for this year’s Academy Awards.

The voting for the Oscar nominations is set to begin on Thursday, January 27, and it will continue until Tuesday, February 1. The announcement limits the eligibility year to 10 months. Last year, the Academy had extended it until February 28, 2021, because of the pandemic.

All of the presumed Oscar contenders, reports ‘Variety’, are on the list. These include ‘Being the Ricardos’ (Amazon Studios), ‘Belfast’ (Focus Features), ‘CODA’ (Apple Original Films), ‘Dune’ (Warner Bros), ‘Encanto’ (Walt Disney Pictures), ‘House of Gucci’ (MGM/United Artists), ‘The Power of the Dog’ (Netflix), ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ (Paramount Pictures), ‘Spencer’ (Neon/Topic Studios), ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (Sony Pictures) and ‘West Side Story’ (20th Century Studios).

Some of the international features from the Oscar shortlist are also eligible for best picture, in addition to the best international feature category, such as Japan’s much-awarded ‘Drive My Car’, Italy’s ‘The Hand of God’, Iran’s ‘A Hero’ and Norway’s ‘The Worst Person in the World’.

Directed by Priyadarshan, ‘Marakkar’ is one of the most expensive films in the history of Malayalam cinema. It narrates the epic tale of Kunjali Marakkar IV, a Malabar Sea lord and his epic battles against the Portuguese. The movie had won three National Awards — Best Feature Film, Best Special Effects and Best Costume Design.

‘Jai Bhim’, which raised the hackles of the PMK, a political party in Tamil Nadu that represents mainly the Vanniyar community, is based on a true incident in 1993, involving a case fought by former Madras High Court Justice K. Chandru, when he was an advocate. Behind him in this legal battle was Sengeni’s wife, Rajakannu.

The only other film to make the cut from South Asia is Bhutan’s ‘Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom’, a 2019 film directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji. It had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.

The film was selected as the Bhutanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards, but later disqualified. It was resubmitted as Bhutan’s entry for the 2022 Oscars and was shortlisted for the awards.

Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards, according to ‘Variety’, will be announced on Tuesday, February 8. The ceremony is scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 27, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will be televised on the American network ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

Ansar Sheikh defies social stigmas to become youngest IAS officer

Born of and raised in poverty, Ansar Sheikh had been completely unaware that one day he could become an IAS officer. This is what makes his story rather interesting…reports Nisar Ahmed (Delhi Based Journalist and Research Scholar at JMI)

It is believed that some Muslim families in India, especially with an orthodox background, tend to discourage their children from attending school or pursuing higher education. This belief is not untrue either. Many talented Muslim youths do shun their education because of family pressure. They start small-scale business ventures or turn to odd jobs instead, even low-paying ones, to support their families. These steps taken by Muslim youths cannot perhaps be termed as “missteps” but when they come at a cost of their education, they do cause them an injustice. For, if the youths had pursued their education, they could very well have realised their dreams and in turn, inspired many others to do the same.

Ansar Sheikh, 21, is one of such youths who come from very humble family backgrounds and faced similar dilemmas mentioned above. Today, he is the youngest IAS officer of the country who cracked the prestigious UPSC exams and secured 361st rank. He is currently serving as the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) at Dinhata, Cooch Beharat, West Bengal.

Ansar’s journey to UPSC was paved with all sorts of hardships. His father Sheikh Ahmed was an auto-driver from Jalna’s Shelgaon village in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Ansar’s mother, Azmat Sheikh would do small labour jobs in the fields. His younger brother Anees Sheikh had dropped out after Class 6 and joined his maternal uncle as assistant in a garage. His house was like a poor man’s house — dishevelled and always in need of repair. When Ansar was in Class 5 at his village school, people advised his father that his son should be asked to do some work instead of going for further studies. The villagers were full of the same old advice: “What can he do after studying for long?

Sheikh Ahmed somehow gave in to the cynic villagers. He reached the school to ask the teachers to convince Ansar to discontinue his education. However, Ansar’s teacher Purushottam Pandulkar had a foretaste of Ansar’s talent. He forbade his father to discourage Ansar from studying further. “Ansar is genuinely talented. Let him study as much as he can. He will definitely succeed. Let him have his path,” Pandulkarji pleaded with Sheikh Saheb.

Sheikh Saheb followed Pandulkarji’s advice and let Ansar continue his education, but the poverty of the family was still a major roadblock. The family income was not sufficient to get Ansar admitted in a good quality school. His father would earn Rs 200-300 with his autorickshaw and mother’s daily income was a paltry one. Ansar told this correspondent that when he passed 10th Class, he wanted to pursue a computer course during the vacation period. “But it would cost Rs 2,000 to complete the full Computer course. My family was unable to arrange this much amount. Somehow, I got to know that a local restaurant needed a waiter. It would pay Rs 3,000 for a month. I readily joined this job and became a waiter to learn Computer,” he said.

As a waiter, Ansar had to work from 8-11. “It was a lengthy and demanding job. I had to serve food, tea, beverages, etc to customers. Plus, to sweep the floor and clean the table and utensils was also part of the job. However, the restaurant owner would provide me two hours break after lunch. During these two hours, I would manage one hour for Computer classes,” he said.

Ansar added that he continued to do various part-time jobs to support his education till his graduation first year.

Meanwhile, an occasion came in his life when his family seriously took his education. It was when he secured 91% marks in the Class 12 exams. It not only won him familial plaudits, but this performance also earned him a name in the society. People came to congratulate his father and the path to his further education was thus illuminated. However, the poverty of the family was still intact, but now his parents and younger brother were firmly resolved to support his education. His brother started working harder to earn more money so that his elder brother might study with a carefree mind.

Interestingly, Ansar was unaware of the fact till now that he would become an IAS officer in future. This story is rather interesting.

Under a scheme earmarked for the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, Ansar would get Rs 30,000. When his father contacted the tehsil office to collect his cheque, the corrupt officers told him that he would have to shell out Rs 3,000 as bribe. When Ansar came to know about this, he was flabbergasted those corrupt officials do not spare even the BPL families. Somewhere in his heart, he developed a determination to weed out corruption by joining high-rank government service. From then onwards, he made up his mind for exams like UPSC.

First, he earned a degree in Political Science from Fergusson College, Pune. He secured 73 percent in his graduation.

He meticulously planned his study schedule and time management. He also joined a coaching academy to maintain his focus and streamline his study. He said that his friends also helped him to stay in a balanced mindset.

In the first six months of preparation, Shaikh concentrated on his optional subject preparation, which was Political Science. It helped, as it was also his graduation subject. In the second six months, he focussed on the general studies papers. In the next three months, he completed his revision and also the remaining portions of the UPSC mains papers. In the next nine months, Shaikh did his prelims exam preparation. After the prelims exam, he studied for his mains in the next 100 days.
