India Must Address Muslim Underrepresentation in Ministries

India has the world’s third-largest Muslim population, about 14.2 percent of the total population as per the last census held in 2011….reports Asian Lite News

The 54 Union Ministries and 93 Departments under their jurisdictions in New Delhi have a total of 11131 officials from the secretary level downwards, of which 178 are Muslims, according to data published in a new research book, Muslims in India – Ground Reality Verses Fake Narratives – Achievements & Accomplishments.

This is history’s lowest-ever representation of Muslims in the Union governance levels, remarked the book penned by Mohammed Abdul Mannan, author of 12 books including the latest, A Nation in Descent – India after the 1990s. Both books are available on Amazon/Kindle.

India has the world’s third-largest Muslim population, about 14.2 percent of the total population as per the last census held in 2011.

Their cultural and religious identity have been getting shredded and the community has been fighting an increasingly open hate and discrimination agenda. Life for the 200 million-strong community has remained in a whirlpool of front-paged discrimination in every socio-economic domain. No Muslim representation has existed in the Union cabinet since July 2022, a first in history.

There are no Muslims among the 52 officials at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), a first in history since this office was set up in 1977. Earlier, the PMO was considered a part of the government in 1961 by the allocation of business rules. PMO was originally set up as the Prime Minister’s Secretariat (PMS) in 1947.

In the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, five Muslims are among 710 officials, including one at the Under Secretary level, two at the Additional Secretary level, and one Deputy Commissioner.  Of the four Muslim officials at AYUSH, one is an Under Secretary. At the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, one is an Under Secretary. One of the two Muslim officials at the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s 94 staff is a Joint Secretary, a woman.

Similarly, one of the four Muslim officials at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is a Deputy Secretary. The Ministry of Cooperation has only one Muslim, a Deputy Director, among its 49 officials. Among the 159 staff at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, seven are Muslims, including one Under Secretary. The Ministry of Culture counts three Muslims among its rank of 93 officers, including an Under Secretary. The 207 officials at the Ministry of Education included five Muslims including an Under Secretary.

Nine of the 559 employees at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology are Muslims. At the Ministry of External Affairs, one of the 115 officials is a Muslim, a Regional Passport Officer. Of the nine Muslims in the total 304 officials at the Ministries of  Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Food Processing Industries,  one is an Additional Secretary and two are Undersecretaries.

One of the 89 officials at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is a Joint Secretary. The Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries is a Muslim, one of the two Muslims among 113 officials.  Of the 345 officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, four are Muslims including  Deputy Director General.  Two of the four Muslim officials at the 262-staff Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs are Under Secretaries.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has Muslims as two of its 129 officials, including a Deputy Director-General. Six of the 356 officials at the Ministry of Labour and Employment are Muslims, including a Joint Director and Deputy Director.  One of the four Muslim officials at the 136-staff Ministry of Mines is a Joint Secretary.

A similar scenario prevails at the Ministry of Minority Affairs with four of the 68 staff being Muslims, including a Joint Secretary and Deputy Secretary. One of the two Muslim officials at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is an Under Secretary. One of the four Muslims among the 216 staff at the Ministry of Power is a Joint Secretary.

Among the 375 officials at the Ministry of Rural Development, nine are Muslims, including an Assistant Director. One of the four Muslim officials at the Ministry of Raod Transport and Highways is an Additional Secretary – they are among the total 281 officials. One of the 89 officials at the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is a Muslim, a Joint Director. A similar scenario prevails at the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation which has a total of 15 officials.

Two of the Muslim officials at the 102-staff Ministry of Steel is an Under Secretary. Three of the 84 officials at the Ministry of Tourism are Muslims, including a Deputy Secretary. Tribal Affairs Ministry counts two Muslims among its 107 officials, including an Under Secretary.  Six Ministries – Coal, Earth Sciences, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Railways, Textiles, and Women and Child Development have a total of 506 officials without a single Muslim.

At the Department level, Muslim representation among the officials is miserably low. Two of the 63 officials at Atomic Energy are Joint Directors. Five of the 644 officials at the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare are Muslims, including a Secretary and an Additional Secretary. Five of the 285 officials at the Department of Telecommunications are Muslims, including four directors. Six of 214 officials at the Department of Posts are Muslims, including an additional Director-General and a Director.

One of the three Muslim officials among the 185 at the Food and Public Distribution is an Assistant Director. One of the 54 officials at the Department of Defence is a Muslim, a Finance Manager of Air Service. The Department of Defence Production counts four Muslims among its 90 officials, including the Chief Production Officer.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has one Muslim among its 16 officials – the Director-General of Aeronautical Systems. Two are Muslims among the 70 officials at the two departments – Meteorology and  Higher Education, School Education & Literacy –  a Director and Joint Secretary. Two of the seven Muslim officials among the 333 staff at the Department of Economic Affairs are Directors.

Of the 162 officials at the Department of Revenue, two are Muslims, including a Commissioner of Income Tax Affairs. The Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises is a Muslim, one of three Muslims among the 67 officials.

Among the 244 officials at the Department of Planning and Training, three are Muslims including an Under Secretary. In the Land Resources Department, two of the 63 officials are Muslims, including one Deputy Secretary.  Similar is the number at the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, with two Muslim officials including an Under Secretary.  Four of the Muslim officials among the total of 61 at the Department of Youth Affairs include an Under Secretary.

The 11 Departments that have no Muslim officials in their ranks are – Space; Animal Husbandry and Dairying; Consumer Affairs; Ex-Servicemen Welfare; Military Affairs’ Investment and Public Asset Management; Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation; Legislative Affairs; Justice, Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances; and Sports. Pakistan govt ends power subsidy for consumers

Starting in October, consumers using up to 200 units per month will face increased charges, ranging from Rs 9 to Rs 29 per unit, as the government subsidy comes to an end….reports Asian Lite News

The Pakistan federal government has made a significant move regarding electricity subsidies. The government has decided to withdraw the electricity subsidy for consumers using up to 200 units per month, according to a report by ARY News.

Starting in October, consumers using up to 200 units per month will face increased charges, ranging from Rs 9 to Rs 29 per unit, as the government subsidy comes to an end. Specifically, protected customers who consume up to 50 units will be charged Rs 9.39 per unit, while those using 51-100 units will pay Rs 13.64 per unit. Consumers utilising 101-200 units will see the steepest increase, with a rate of Rs 29.21 per unit.

Notably, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has also introduced a new surcharge policy for late bill payments.

As per the reports, a 5 per cent surcharge will apply to bills paid within three days after the due date, while a 10 per cent surcharge will apply to payments made beyond that period, ARY News reported.

The government has provided some flexibility to the consumers and has decided that no surcharge will be applied if payments are made within the three-day grace period following the due date. This change replaces the previous uniform 10 per cent late payment charge on overdue bills.

Pakistan’s citizens have faced a continuous rise in electricity prices. In August, the electricity prices in the country rose for the 14th time, increasing the burden on Pakistani citizens, ARY News had reported.

According to the details, 14 adjustments were made from July 2023 to August 2024, resulting in an additional cost of over Rs 455 billion to consumers.

These adjustments had led to a significant increase in power prices, with the highest increase of Rs 7.06 per unit in March 2024. The constant changes in electricity prices have made it challenging for the citizens to manage their expenses, as reported by ARY News.

People urged the Pakistan government to review the fuel adjustment mechanism to provide relief to the public. (ANI)

MVA allies concur on 85 Assembly seats each

Besides the seats for the three main allies, the MVA shall also allocate seats to other allies like the Samajwadi Party, the Peasants & Workers Party, the CPI, the CPI-M, and other smaller parties…reports Asian Lite News

Maharashtra’s opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies Congress-Shiv Sena-UBT-Nationalist Congress Party-SP on Wednesday finalised their respective candidates for 85 seats each — totalling 255 out of the total 288 — after hectic deliberations.

Simultaneously, the Shiv Sena-UBT released its first list of 65 nominees for the November 20 Assembly elections as it welcomed leaders from different parties to its fold during the day.

Speaking to media persons, state Congress President Nana Patole, state NCP-SP President Jayant R. Patil and Shiv Sena-UBT MP Sanjay Raut said that they have finalised 85 seats each and candidates.

They said that agreement has been reached on 270 of the total 288 Assembly seats and the remaining 18 shall be finalised in a day or so — belying earlier rumours floating in political circles.

Besides the seats for the three main allies, the MVA shall also allocate seats to other allies like the Samajwadi Party, the Peasants & Workers Party, the CPI, the CPI-M, and other smaller parties.

“Everything is proceeding smoothly… There is no credence to the speculation that ‘this will happen or that will not happen’. All the MVA allies are going to contest the elections together,” declared Raut, as Patole and Patil nodded their consent.

Nevertheless, the allies, particularly Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT are likely to push hard to increase their share by almost three figures which could cause heart-burns among the smaller partners, and the final seat-share figures are likely to be announced on Thursday, in time for the last date for filing nominations (October 29).

Taking the lead, Shiv Sena-UBT announced its first list of 65 candidates comprising a mix of party loyalists, a few sitting MLAs, many new faces, youth and women, and several newcomers from other parties.

In Thane’s Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency, it has fielded Kedar Dighe who will lock horns with ruling Shiv Sena’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which would be one of the top key contests in the state.

Other important candidates are former Minister Aditya Thackeray (Worli), Mahesh Sawant (Mahim) who will be pitted against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s Youth President Amit (Raj) Thackeray, and Varun Sardesai (Bandra East).

Some more prominent nominees are Sanjay Kadam (Dapoli), Bhaskar Jadhav (Guhagar), Rajan Salvi (Rajapur), Vaibhav Naik (Kudal), Rajan Teli (Sawantwadi), Snehal Jagtap (Mahad), Rajan Vichare (Thane), Satyajeet A. Patil and (Shahuwadi).

In Mumbai, the nominees are Rutuja Latke (Andheri East), Sanjay Potnis (Kalina), Sunil Prabhu (Dindoshi) and Sameer Desai (Goregaon), as per a party statement.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena-UBT President Uddhav Thackeray was on his feet all day tying the ‘Shiv Bandhan’ to welcoming new entrants from different parties to his party fold ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

They included Congress Buldhana Secretary Advocate Jaishree Shelke, ruling ally Nationalist Congress Party’s Vice-President Apoorva Hire, Anuradha Nagwade, and Rajendra Nagwade, Ratnagiri Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bal Yashwant Mane, and noted leader from Kolhapur K. P. Patil.

Priyanka owns assets worth Rs 12 crore, Robert worth Rs 66 crore

Priyanka Gandhi filed three sets of nominations before the Wayanad District Collector on Wednesday…reports Asian Lite News

Details of assets owned by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who is contesting the Lok Sabha bypoll from Kerala’s Wayanad in her electoral debut, and her businessman husband Robert Vadra came out in the open on Wednesday, with the couple being worth Rs 88 crore.

Priyanka Gandhi filed three sets of nominations before the Wayanad District Collector on Wednesday, and the information about her and her husband’s assets came in the affidavit she filed, as per the mandatory requirement for every candidate who files a nomination to contest an election in the country.

The Congress-led UDF candidate, in her nomination affidavit, revealed that her assets worth nearly Rs 12 crore, comprise a 12,000 sq feet farmhouse near Shimla valued at Rs 5.64 crore besides a Honda CRV presently worth Rs 8 lakh. Among the other assets are mutual fund investments to the tune of Rs 2.24 crore besides jewellery worth Rs 1.16 crore. Then she co-owns agricultural land at Mehrauli worth Rs 2.10 crore along with her brother and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi. Incidentally, she has declared an income of over Rs 46.39 lakh in the previous fiscal and this includes interest from banks and other investments besides rental income.

Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Vadra has movable assets worth over Rs 37.9 crore and immovable assets worth over Rs 27.64 crore. These include vehicles besides partnerships in a few companies.

Incidentally, this is the debut election of Priyanka Gandhi after her brother Rahul vacated the seat which he retained the seat at the April general elections. Days after that, he decided to vacate the Wayanad seat to retain the Gandhi family’s traditional Rae Bareli seat from here he was also elected. Soon after he vacated it, the Congress went into a huddle to select his replacement, and to keep up his promise that he would not desert Wayanad, decided to field Priyanka Gandhi as its candidate.

Addressing a gathering before filing her nomination, Priyanka Gandhi, who was accompanied by her mother and former party chief Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, and top Congress leaders, said: “This is a new journey for me and you are my guides. For me, it’s my responsibility too. You are the symbol of trust between my family and you. I have been a mother of two children before entering politics. The one thing I want my children to know is what difficulty I faced, I was there with them whenever they needed me. You are also my family and I want you to know the same, I am there to fight for you and I will fight your battles and will not let you down. I thank you from the core of my heart for accepting me as the UDF candidate.”

King and Queen arrive in Samoa to red carpet welcome

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa greeted the King and Queen Camilla at Faleolo International Airport …reports Asian Lite News

King Charles has arrived in Samoa for a four-day state visit where he will preside for the first time over a gathering of Commonwealth presidents and prime ministers.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa greeted the King and Queen Camilla at Faleolo International Airport where a red carpet had been rolled out amid high winds and last-minute vacuum cleaning.

The Royal Samoan Police Band began playing as the couple alighted and met local officials.

The King and Queen, who ended their six-day tour of Australia on Tuesday, posted a message on social media saying they “couldn’t wait” to arrive in Samoa and experience the “warmth” of the country’s ancient traditions.

The tweet included a few words in Samoan which loosely translated as “looking forward to meeting the Samoan people”.

Samoa, a small country in the central South Pacific Ocean made up of an archipelago of nine islands, is hosting a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) which has the theme “One Resilient Common Future”.

The King, as head of the Commonwealth, will formally open the event that will also be attended by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Charles deputised for Queen Elizabeth II during the last CHOGM staged by Rwanda in 2022, and in Samoa will be joined by Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

The route from the airport to Apia – Samoa’s capital – had been spruced up for the royal visit on Wednesday. Each village along the road had adopted a country, with residents decorating their houses and adorning their lawns with the corresponding flags.

Flashing lights were put in trees, bushes and on roof tops, while car tyres were repurposed as flower pots and painted bright colours. Climate change, a subject close to the King’s heart, is expected to top the agenda at the meeting held in a part of the world very vulnerable to rising sea levels.

While reparations are not officially on the table, the subject is likely to come up as this group of countries was brought together by British colonisation. The UK government has said there will no official apology or reparations.

The King and Queen wrapped up the Australian leg of their tour on Tuesday after completing a long list of engagements. Between them, on Tuesday alone the royal couple visited the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, a food bank, a social housing project, a literacy initiative and a community barbecue.

They met two leading cancer researchers and celebrated the Sydney Opera House’s 50th anniversary. An Australian arm of the King’s Foundation was officially launched, expanding a charity which promotes sustainability and provides training in traditional craft skills.

But it was not an entirely straightforward trip. On Monday, an Australian senator defended heckling the King and accusing him of genocide after he addressed Parliament House, telling the BBC “he’s not of this land”. Lidia Thorpe, an Aboriginal Australian woman, interrupted the ceremony in the capital Canberra by shouting for about a minute before she was escorted away by security.

After making claims of genocide against “our people”, she could be heard yelling: “This is not your land, you are not my King.” But Aboriginal elder Aunty Violet Sheridan, who had earlier welcomed the King and Queen, said Thorpe’s protest was “disrespectful”, adding: “She does not speak for me.”

The ceremony concluded without any reference to the incident, and the royal couple proceeded to meet hundreds of people who had waited outside to greet them.

‘Labour donor Lord Alli breached parliamentary rules’

The first breach said Lord Alli should have registered himself as an unremunerated director of The Charlie Parsons Foundation, as well as a trustee….reports Asian Lite News

Labour donor Lord Alli breached four parliamentary rules over his registration of interests, a standards watchdog has found.

Starmer’s largest donor was found to have failed to include all his roles at a charity, did not register he had a controlling interest in a media company and did not register he was a director of a British Virgin Islands-based firm in time.

Lord Alli, a TV executive who has given more than £700,000 to Labour over the past 20 years, was recommended to write a letter of apology to the chair of the Lords’ conduct committee, Baroness Manningham-Buller.

In his letter, he wrote: “I am writing to you today to offer my apology for my breach of conduct by not registering my interests correctly. I will endeavour to keep to the Code of Conduct at all times to avoid such circumstances again.”

The first breach said Lord Alli should have registered himself as an unremunerated director of The Charlie Parsons Foundation, as well as a trustee.

He helped set up the charity in 2011 with Charlie Parsons, who created the Survivor reality TV series, to invest in “new talent, new projects and new business ideas”, mainly in the TV and entertainment industry.

The second breach found Lord Alli removed himself prematurely as a “person with significant control” of Silvergate BP Bidco Limited, the production company that produces the Peter Rabbit television programme. He also prematurely removed his entry saying he had a “shareholding amounting to a controlling interest” in the company.

The fourth breach was the late registration as an unremunerated director of MAC (BVI) Limited, an offshore British Virgin Islands subsidiary of 450 PLC, an investment firm based in tax haven Jersey Lord Alli had declared he was a chairman for.

Lord Alli previously said the omission was an “unintentional error” and he “had not realised” until he was asked by journalists in September.

The peer came under scrutiny in September over the tens of thousands of pounds he has given to Labour MPs to cover clothes, holidays and work events. According to data unveiled by Sky News’ Westminster Accounts project, he gave Sir Keir more than £39,000 in gifts and hospitality over the course of the last parliament.

This year alone, the prime minister has received nearly £19,000 worth of work clothes and several pairs of glasses from Lord Alli as well as £20,000 worth of accommodation. Starmer said this was to allow his son to study for his GCSEs in peace at the former TV executive’s central London flat while the family home was surrounded by media during the general election.

The PM, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and deputy PM Angela Rayner have said they will no longer accept donations to pay for clothes following the backlash.

  • Starmer rejects calls for slavery reparations

Starmer rejects calls for slavery reparations

The prime minister is under pressure to discuss reparatory justice with Commonwealth countries, most of which are former UK colonies, in Samoa this week…reports Asian Lite News

Keir Starmer has insisted he wants to “look forward” rather than have “very long endless discussions about reparations on the past” in his first comments on the issue before the Commonwealth summit.

The prime minister is under pressure to discuss reparatory justice with Commonwealth countries, most of which are former UK colonies, in Samoa this week.

Speaking to reporters travelling with him for the summit, Starmer said Commonwealth countries were “facing real challenges on things like climate in the here and now”.

“That’s where I’m going to put my focus, rather than what will end up being very, very long, endless discussions about reparations on the past,” he said. “This is about stance, really, looking forward rather than looking backwards.

“Slavery is abhorrent … there’s no question about that. But I think from my point of view and taking the approach I’ve just taken, I’d rather roll up my sleeves and work with them on the current future-facing challenges than spend a lot of time on the past.”

Caricom, a group of 15 Caribbean countries, has indicated it will push Starmer and the foreign secretary, David Lammy, on the issue at the Commonwealth heads of government meeting (Chogm) in Samoa.

In 2018 Lammy, then a backbench Labour MP, called for reparations to be paid to Caribbean nations. But in government Labour has ruled out apologising over Britain’s role in transatlantic slavery. Starmer said the focus of the summit should be “growth and trade” between Commonwealth countries.

The government also announced a new UK trade centre of expertise based in the Foreign Office, which will advise developing countries on competing in global markets and connect them with UK businesses.

The trade centre is intended to boost economic ties with the Commonwealth. Six members – Bangladesh, Guyana, India, Mozambique, Rwanda and Uganda – are projected to be among the 10 fastest-growing economies in the world by 2027. The combined GDP of the Commonwealth is expected to exceed $19.5tn in the next three years.

Starmer’s comments on reparations prompted criticism from historians and campaigners who said they showed a lack of leadership and a fundamental misunderstanding about what leaders in the global south had been calling for.

Eric Phillips, the chair of the Guyana Reparations Committee, said: “I just don’t understand the relevance of the Commonwealth if PM Starmer takes this cruel approach.”

He argued it had been slavery that underpinned, nurtured and rewarded “the rampant capitalism that has today created the climate change crisis”, adding: “Britain … wants to trade with Commonwealth countries now that Brexit has hurt its economy. The trading principles are purely capitalistic and against the interest of former colonies. No reparations, no trade should be the new motto of countries that seek reparations.”

Liliane Umubyeyi, the director of African Futures Lab, said: “Heads of states like the prime minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, have been saying that the demands for reparations don’t concern only what happened in the past, they concern contemporary conditions of inequality.”

Prof Verene A Shepherd, of the UN committee on the elimination of racial discrimination and director of the Centre for Reparation Research at the University of the West Indies, described Starmer’s remarks as dismissive.

She said they “will not make the campaign go away, and I hope that those who continue to be affected by the legacies of British colonialism will tell him so when they see him at the Commonwealth heads of government meeting”.

The veteran Labour MP Diane Abbott said: “It is disappointing that the PM has been so dismissive of the opportunity to debate reparations … the descendants of slaves live with the consequences of the transatlantic slave trade in the here and now.”

The UN judge Patrick Robinson concluded last year that the UK owed more than £18tn in reparations for its historical involvement in slavery in 14 countries. But Downing Street has said the issue is “not on the agenda” at Chogm, and Keir Starmer said on Wednesday that he wants to be “facing forward” rather than have “very long, endless discussions about reparations on the past”.

Campaigners argue that in a number of Commonwealth nations, the generational impacts of crimes against humanity have been compounded not only by a modern-day system of debt that has favoured western interests, but also by extreme weather events, caused or made worse by the carbon emissions of wealthy nations.

The demands extend beyond the Commonwealth. The African Union, which also includes former French, Spanish and Portuguese colonies, has joined forces with the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to put pressure on former slave-owning European nations to engage with the reparations movement. Caricom has drawn up a 10-point plan for reparatory justice.

In Britain in recent years, organisations including the Guardian, the Church of England and the Bank of England have apologised for their links to slavery. The UK is yet to make an apology.

King Charles, in a speech to Commonwealth nations in 2022, said ways must be found to “acknowledge our past”, including slavery, which he had previously described as an “appalling atrocity”. But he has stopped short of saying sorry.

Pakistan limits Chief Justice’s term to 3 years

President Asif Ali Zardari signed the Constitution (26th Amendment) Act, 2024, following its approval by both the Senate and the National Assembly. …reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan on Monday passed a new law limiting the Chief Justice’s tenure to three years and establishing a special commission to appoint the top judge from the three senior-most Supreme Court judges. The move comes amid opposition from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

President Asif Ali Zardari signed the Constitution (26th Amendment) Act, 2024, following its approval by both the Senate and the National Assembly. With this new law, the government can now prevent Justice Mansoor Ali Shah from succeeding the current Chief Justice, Qazi Faez Isa, who is set to retire on October 25 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65. The original proposal to extend the retirement age to 68 was not included in the amendment.

The bill passed through both houses of parliament, despite fierce opposition. The National Assembly voted on the amendment after a lengthy overnight session, with 225 members in favor, surpassing the required 224 votes. Earlier, the Senate approved the bill with a two-thirds majority, with 65 out of 69 members supporting it.

The amendment introduces a commission consisting of the Chief Justice, four senior-most Supreme Court judges, two senators, and two National Assembly members—one from the opposition—to appoint the Chief Justice. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, who presented the bill, said these changes would help expedite justice delivery by the Supreme Court.

The opposition, including PTI and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), strongly opposed the amendment. PTI leaders, including Hammad Azhar and Salman Akram Raja, criticized the law as undermining the judiciary’s independence. Azhar called the amendment “a death blow” to judicial autonomy, warning it would politicize the judiciary by giving the government control over appointments. Raja described it as “the bleakest moment in parliament’s history.”

Despite opposition, Pakistan People’s Party chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari pushed for the amendment, saying the government would proceed with or without PTI’s support. He emphasized the importance of completing the legislative process, regardless of PTI’s boycott.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the amendment as a symbol of national solidarity, declaring it would usher in a new era for the nation.

Priyanka to file nomination in Wayanad tomorrow

Congress President Malikarjuna Kharge, three Congress Chief Ministers and other national senior Congress leaders will also visit Kerala on Wednesday….reports Asian Lite News

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi will visit Wayanad on Wednesday and will be accompanied by the party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi who will also file her nomination papers for the upcoming bypolls in Kerala.

Congress President Malikarjuna Kharge, three Congress Chief Ministers and other national senior Congress leaders will also visit Kerala on Wednesday.

Seasoned Congress leader and Kasargod Lok Sabha member Rajmohan Unnithan who is in the Wayanad district overseeing the last-minute arrangements for the roadshow to be held in Kalpetta told IANS that Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will reach Mysore on Tuesday and drive down to Wayanad the same evening.

“Sonia Gandhi will reach Kannur on Wednesday and from there will take a helicopter to reach Wayanad just before Priyanka files her nomination. The other leaders include Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his Deputy Chief Minister D.K.sivakumar, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot,” said Unnithan.

He said that this would be her (Sonia Gandhi’s) first visit to Kerala after a decade.

“While Priyanka along with other leaders will take part in a roadshow before filing the nomination on Wednesday, Sonia Gandhi will not be taking part in the roadshow but will accompany Priyanka when she files her nomination. Robert Vadra and Rahul Gandhi will also accompany Priyanka,” said Unnithan.

Unnithan added Priyanka and Rahul will stay overnight on Tuesday at Sultan Bathery, and their mother Sonia Gandhi will join them on Wednesday.

“Priyanka will visit Wayanad again next week and try to meet as many people as possible. We have no doubt that she will win by a margin of five lakh votes,” added Unnithan.

The CPI has fielded veteran former legislator Sathyan Mokeri who finished a close third during the 2014 general elections in Wayanad while the BJP has brought in young Kozhikode Corporation party Councilor Navya Haridas, a former software engineer who quit her job and plunged into full-time politics.

Rahul Gandhi had won the 2019 general elections with a margin of 4.60 lakhs from Wayanad which came down to 3.64 lakhs in this year’s general elections. However, he vacated Wayanad in favour of Rae Bareli.

The Gandhi family has a special love for Wayanad as it was at Papanasini River located near the Tiruneli temple that Rajiv Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in 1991.

Wayanad constituency is spread across seven Assembly constituencies in three districts – Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode.

Of the seven, four are held by the Congress-led UDF, two by the CPI-M and one was won by the Left-backed independent legislator P.V. Anvar who has now split up with the ruling Left and floated his own party.

Pak-based TRF takes responsibility for J&K terror attack

This incident has been carried out by the local module of TRF. This module was doing recce of the crime spot for the last one month….reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan-based terror outfit The Resistance Front (TRF) has owned responsibility for Sunday’s terror attack on unarmed, innocent civilians in Jammu & Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, official sources have confirmed.

Sources said, “TRF Chief Sheikh Sajjad Gul, based in Pakistan, is the mastermind of this attack. On his instructions, the local module of TRF became active, which for the first time targeted Kashmiri and non-Kashmiri people together.

The number of terrorists who carried out the targeted killing of seven civilians in Gagangir area of Ganderbal district is believed to be two to three.

This incident has been carried out by the local module of TRF. This module was doing recce of the crime spot for the last one month.

This terrorist organisation active in Kashmir has targeted Kashmiri Pandits, Sikhs and non-locals in the last one and a half years.

This is a big change in the strategy of this module, which is simultaneously targeting non-local and local on development projects.

Meanwhile, sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are visiting the terror attack site on Monday to make their own assessment of the attack.

Officials said that the death toll in the terrorist attack on a private company’s labourers’ camp in Gagangir area reached seven after another injured labourer succumbed in hospital.

Those killed by the terrorists include both locals and non-locals working to build a tunnel between Gagangir and Sonamarg to make Srinagar-Sonamarg an all-weather road.

The list of killed civilians includes Faheem Nasir (Safety Manager from Bihar), Angil Shukla (Mechanical Manager from Madhya Pradesh), Mohammad Hanif from Bihar, Dr Shahnawaz from Budgam district of Kashmir, Kaleem from Bihar, Shashi Abrol (Designer from Jammu) and Gurmeet Singh (Rigger from Gurdaspur, Punjab).

Five injured are being treated at SKIMS Super Speciality Hospital in Srinagar.

Security forces cordoned off the area and an operation was launched to trace the terrorists. The attack took place around 8.15 p.m. on Sunday.

The attack on innocent civilians engaged in an important infrastructure project that would make Sonamarg tourist destination an all-weather destination, thereby bringing livelihood to hundreds of locals, has received wide condemnation.

Union Home Minister, Amit Shah posted on X, “The dastardly terror attack on civilians in Gagangir, J&K, is a despicable act of cowardice. Those involved in this heinous act will not be spared and will face the harshest response from our security forces.”

“At this moment of immense grief, I extend my sincerest condolences to the families of the deceased. Praying for the speedy recovery of those injured,” he added.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, who has been personally monitoring the work on this tunnel project said, “I strongly condemn the horrific terror attack on innocent labourers in Gagangir, Sonamarg, Jammu & Kashmir, who were engaged in a vital infrastructure project. I offer my humble tribute to the martyred labourers and extend my deepest condolences to their families during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured for a swift and full recovery.”

J&K Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha said, “I strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack on civilians in Gagangeer. I assure the people that those behind this despicable act will not go unpunished. We have given full freedom to J&K Police, Army and Security forces.”

“Our brave personnel are on the ground & they will ensure terrorists pay a very heavy price for their action. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families. Praying for speedy recovery of the injured. The entire nation stands in solidarity with the families in this hour of grief,” he added.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the incident as dastardly and cowardly on the part of the militants. “The casualty figure from the Gagangir attack is not final as there are a number of injured labourers, both local and non-local. Praying that the injured make a full recovery as the more seriously injured are being referred to SKIMS, Srinagar.”

Immediately after getting news about the attack, Omar said earlier on Sunday, “Very sad news of a dastardly & cowardly attack on non-local labourers at Gagangir in Sonamarg region. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. 2 have been killed & 2-3 more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people & send my condolences to their loved ones.”

PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti said, “I unequivocally condemn the attack as being senseless act of violence”. J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President, Tariq Hameed Karra condemned the attack and expressed grave concern over the frequent attacks by unknown gunmen on non-local labourers. He said such incidents will vitiate the atmosphere and requested the government to take immediate measures to contain such brutal attacks on innocent people.

CPI-M leader and MLA, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said, “A deeply troubling report of yet another terrorist attack on migrant labourers has surfaced from Ganderbal. Barely 48 hours ago, a non-local labourer was killed in Shopian. These despicable attacks appear to be deliberate attempts to disturb peace. Culprits must be brought to book and punished. Sending my heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families.”

J&K Peoples’ Conference (JKPC) Chairman, Sajad Gani Lone said, “Strongly condemn the dastardly act of terror wherein two persons have lost their lives in Sonamarg. This is an insane act of madness. My thoughts with families of these two families. May the perpetrators be brought to justice.”

Intelligence agencies believe that the act of terrorists killing innocent, unarmed civilians is the result of frustration among their handlers across the border after witnessing a largely people participative and peaceful Lok Sabha and legislative assembly election in J&K.
