At least 250 students were arrested in Rawalpindi on Thursday during protests that erupted across Punjab, Pakistan, following allegations of an on-campus rape at a Lahore college. The protests began on Monday in several campuses of the privately-owned Punjab Group of Colleges after reports surfaced on social media that a female student at the Gulberg girls’ campus had been raped by a security guard in the institution’s basement.

The suspect is in police custody but denies the accusation. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz dismissed the reports as fake news, accusing former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of spreading misinformation. Nawaz asserted that no such incident occurred.

By Wednesday, protests had spread to other cities, including Jehlum, Faisalabad, and Gujrat. On Thursday, demonstrations expanded to Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Attock, Sargodha, and Vehari. In Rawalpindi, students vandalized a college building, prompting police to fire tear gas and detain 250 individuals.

The police stated that legal actions are being taken against those disrupting public peace, warning that further involvement in illegal activities could have serious consequences for the students’ futures. Police personnel have been deployed across the city to maintain order.

Social media was also used in mobilizing protesters, as videos of the chaos were circulated widely.

Various student organizations, including the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), Red Workers Front, and Progressive Students Collective also expressed solidarity with the demonstrators.

In Gujrat, the violence escalated resulting in the death of a security guard and injuries to several students during confrontations at the PGC boys’ campus.

Reports indicated that a group of aggressive protesters, comprising both local and outside students, launched a protest rally and initially attacked the girls’ campus on Rehman Shaheed Road, causing significant damage.

The protestors then moved on to the boys’ campus and Punjab College at Kunjah, where Azhar Hussain, a 50-year-old security guard, was killed. Police registered a murder case against around 185 individuals, including 35 identified suspects, following a report from the guard’s son.

Additionally, at least three students were injured, one critically, when their motorcycle collided with a median while fleeing from police.

The Commissioner of Gujranwala visited the hospital to check on the injured student. Meanwhile, the Lorry Adda police filed a case against local officers, including the station house officer, based on a complaint from the father of the critically injured student, Dawn reported.

Violent protests also erupted in other towns in Gujrat district, including Lalamusa, Kharian, and Jalalpur Jattan, where protesters damaged PGC campuses and stole valuables. College management accused police of negligence, claiming they failed to intervene during the violence.

  • Supreme Court embraces new symbolism

    Supreme Court embraces new symbolism

The removal of the blindfold from ‘Lady Justice’ is more than a visual change—it symbolises a shift in how the judiciary views justice in modern India….reports Asian Lite News

The Supreme Court (SC) of India has unveiled a redesigned version of the ‘Lady Justice’ statue, marking a significant departure from its colonial past. Traditionally depicted with a blindfold and a sword, the new statue now features ‘Lady Justice’ with open eyes and the Constitution of India in place of the sword, reflecting the judiciary’s commitment to constitutional values and justice that “sees everyone equally”, reported NDTV.

The removal of the blindfold from ‘Lady Justice’ is more than a visual change—it symbolises a shift in how the judiciary views justice in modern India. The blindfold, long associated with impartiality and equality before the law, has been replaced with open eyes, a bold statement led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud.

“The law is not blind; it sees everyone equally,” CJI Chandrachud said during the unveiling.

This change, according to sources in the Supreme Court, reflects an evolving legal identity—one that distances itself from colonial symbols and embraces a uniquely Indian interpretation of justice. The updated statue now stands proudly in the judges’ library, embodying a justice system that is aware, vigilant, and inclusive.

Another striking feature of the new ‘Lady Justice’ is the replacement of the sword with the Constitution. While the sword previously represented authority and punishment, its replacement with the Constitution signifies a shift towards a more principled and balanced approach to justice. The Constitution, as the foundation of the judiciary’s role, represents the upholding of rights, equality, and fairness over mere retribution.

    Supreme Court.

A senior official from the Chief Justice’s office explained, “The sword is a symbol of violence, but courts deliver justice according to constitutional laws. The new statue aims to reflect this principle.”

The redesign of ‘Lady Justice’ aligns with a broader effort by the Indian judiciary to shed its colonial past. Recent legal reforms, such as the introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), underscore this movement. CJI Chandrachud has been vocal about the need to break away from British-era symbols and laws, emphasising that the judiciary’s role is not punitive but protective of constitutional rights.

As noted by a source close to the Chief Justice, “Justice Chandrachud believes that India should move forward from the British legacy, and that the law is never blind; it sees everyone equally.” This philosophy is embodied in the redesigned ‘Lady Justice,’ which now represents the Constitution as the ultimate source of justice.

Despite the changes, one aspect of ‘Lady Justice’ remains unchanged—the scales in her right hand, which continue to represent the balance of justice. These scales symbolise the impartial weighing of evidence, ensuring that both sides are considered equally before a verdict is reached.

“The scales of justice represent balance in society, and the idea that facts and arguments by both sides are weighed by courts before arriving at a conclusion,” said an official.

CJI proposes Justice Khanna’s name as his successor

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Chandrachud has formally proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.

In a communication to the Union government, Chief Justice Chandrachud stated that since he is demitting office on November 10, Justice Khanna would be his successor.

Upon approval by the government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. He is set to serve a tenure of six months, concluding on May 13, 2025, before his retirement.

The letter is written as per convention where the retiring Chief Justice of India nominates the second-most senior judge a successor. The Union government then approves the recommendation.

Justice Chandrachud took over as the CJI on November 9, 2022. Judges of the Supreme Court retire by the age of 65.

Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983 and initially practised at the district courts at the Tis Hazari complex, and later in the High Court of Delhi and tribunals.

He was elevated as an additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made a permanent judge in 2006.

Justice Khanna was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.

Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, born November 11, 1959, is an Indian jurist, who is the 50th and current chief justice of India serving since November 2022.

He was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of India in May 2016 and also previously served as the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court from 2013 to 2016 and as a judge of the Bombay High Court from 2000 to 2013.

CJI Chandrachud was educated at Delhi University and Harvard University and has practised as a lawyer for Sullivan& Cromwell and in the Bombay High Court.

He has been part of benches that delivered landmark judgments such as the electoral bond scheme verdict, the Ram Janmabhoomi verdict, the Sabarimala case, the same-sex marriage case and on revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)

SC to hear plea for restoration of J&K’s statehood

Filed through advocate Soyaib Qureshi, the application contends that the prolonged delay in restoring statehood has negatively impacted the people of Jammu and Kashmir…reports Asian Lite News

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear an application seeking the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood within two months. The case, brought forward by Zahoor Ahmed Bhat, a college teacher, and Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, an activist, aims to expedite the process of reinstating Jammu and Kashmir’s status as a state.

Advocate Gopal Shankarnarayan mentioned the urgency of listing the matter before a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. The CJI confirmed that the court would schedule the case for hearing soon.

Filed through advocate Soyaib Qureshi, the application contends that the prolonged delay in restoring statehood has negatively impacted the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The plea urged the Union of India to adhere to a prior commitment to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a promise made by the Solicitor General following the abrogation of Article 370. The petitioners argue that despite assurances, no substantial actions have been taken in the past 10 months since the Supreme Court upheld the abrogation of the region’s special status in its August 2023 ruling.

The petitioners assert that this delay violates the basic principle of federalism, which is a key component of India’s constitutional structure.

In December 2023, the Supreme Court last heard the case regarding Article 370. Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud acknowledged that Article 370 was originally intended as a temporary provision, implemented due to war conditions in the region. He emphasised that the J-K Constituent Assembly, which drafted the special provisions for the state, was not meant to be a permanent body. Furthermore, he indicated that the special condition under which Article 370 was introduced had ceased to exist when the Constituent Assembly dissolved.

The bench of five justices, led by CJI Chandrachud, stated that there were no issues with the presidential powers exercised in August 2019 to revoke Article 370. The court ruled that the exercise of power was valid and constitutional.

The bench further directed the central government and the Election Commission (EC) to ensure that statehood is restored and elections are held by September 30, 2024.

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Omar Abdullah took oath as the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Union territory on Wednesday. The National Conference party secured 42 out of 90 seats in the Assembly elections. NC alliance Congress managed to win seven seats and four independent MLAs also extended their support to the party, placing it well over the 46-seat majority mark.

The NC and Congress parties had both fought their election campaign on the promise of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Party leaders have advocated for the same since the conclusion of the Assembly elections on October 8.

On Saturday, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah stressed that statehood restoration is essential for Jammu and Kashmir’s stability and effective governance. The former chief minister further highlighted it as a top priority for his party.

“Our priority will be to reunite Jammu and Kashmir and eliminate the hatred spread during this election. The restoration of statehood is vital so that the state can function properly, and we can focus on governance,” Abdullah said.

Congress leader P Chidambaram also weighed in on the issue on Sunday. He urged the new Jammu and Kashmir government, once formed, to prioritise the restoration of statehood. He emphasised that parties in the INDIA alliance should support this demand.

case the government does not agree, the matter should be taken to court. The government had committed to statehood restoration before the Supreme Court,” Chidambaram posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The petitioners have also argued that the peaceful conclusion of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir indicates that security concerns are no longer a significant barrier to the restoration of statehood. They believe that the Supreme Court can issue directions for reinstating statehood without fear of security issues.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the DA hike was effective from July 1…reports Asian Lite News

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a 3 per cent hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees.

During a press briefing after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the DA hike was effective from July 1, 2024. Vaishnaw said that the Dearness Relief for pensioners has also been revised by 3 percent.

“The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved an additional instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners w.e.f. 01.07.2024 representing an increase of three percent (3 per cent) over the existing rate of 50 per cent of the Basic Pay/Pension, to compensate against price rise,” as per a government release.

It added that the combined impact on the exchequer on account of both DA and DR would be Rs .9,448.35 crore per annum.

As per the release, this increase is following the accepted formula, which is based on the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission. This will benefit about 49.18 lakh central government employees and 64.89 lakh pensioners.

The Dearness Allowance/Dearness Relief is paid to central government employees/pensioners to adjust the cost of living and to protect their basic pay/pension from erosion in the real values.

These are revised twice a year from January 1 and July 1 based on increase in 12 monthly average of All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) published by the Labour Bureau.

Since the hike is effective from July 2024, the employees will get arrears for July, August and September.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday hailed the Union cabinet’s decision to hike 3 per cent Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees and called it a ‘gift’ to the Central Government employees on the occasion of festivals.

“The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an additional instalment of DA to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners w.e.f. 01.07.2024 representing an increase of three per cent (3 per cent) over the existing rate of 50 per cent of the Basic Pay/Pension, to compensate against price rise,” reads a government release.

“Giving a gift to the Central Government employees on the occasion of festivals, today the Cabinet led by Modi ji has increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) of Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to the pensioners by an additional 3%,” Union Minister Shah wrote on X.

Shah further said that the decision will benefit 49.18 lakh central government employees and 64.89 lakh pensioners.

Streeting proposes weight loss jabs for unemployed

The Health Minister’s comments coincided with the Government’s announcement of a £279 million investment from pharmaceutical giant Lilly…reports Asian Lite News

In a bold move to address rising obesity rates and their impact on the National Health Service (NHS), United Kingdom’s Health Minister Wes Streeting has proposed that weight loss jabs be offered to unemployed individuals. This suggestion, outlined in his column for the Telegraph, aims to assist people in returning to work while alleviating financial pressures on the NHS.

Streeting highlighted the significant burden that “widening waistbands” are placing on the NHS, revealing that obesity-related issues cost the health service approximately £11 billion annually, surpassing the expenses incurred from smoking. In his piece, he noted, “Illness caused by obesity causes people to take an extra four sick days a year on average, while many others are forced out of work altogether.”

The Health Minister’s comments coincided with the Government’s announcement of a £279 million investment from pharmaceutical giant Lilly, made on the same day Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hosted an international investment summit. This funding is expected to facilitate real-world trials evaluating the impact of weight loss jabs on worklessness.

The upcoming trials, conducted by Health Innovation Manchester and Lilly, aim to assess whether administering these medications can effectively reduce worklessness and influence NHS service utilisation. These studies will be centred in Greater Manchester, marking a significant step in understanding the intersection between health and employment.

The initiative aims to utilise innovative weight loss treatments, such as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Lilly’s Mounjaro, which have shown promising results in clinical trials. Health Secretary Wes Streeting believes these medications could be “life-changing” for individuals struggling with obesity, enabling them to regain control of their health and rejoin the workforce.

The minister said that unhealthy eating impacts people’s lives, cutting their life expectancy. “Our widening waistbands are also placing a significant burden on our health service, costing the NHS 11bn pounds a year – even more than smoking. And it’s holding back our economy. Illness caused by obesity causes people to take an extra four sick days a year on average, while many others are forced out of work altogether,” Streeting wrote in an opinion piece for the Telegraph.

However, individuals will still need to remain responsible for taking “healthy living more seriously”, as the “NHS can’t be expected to always pick up the tab for unhealthy lifestyles”, he said.

His proposal to use weight-loss medications comes the same day the UK government announced a 279 million pounds investment from Lilly — the world’s largest pharmaceutical company and the chief rival to Wegovy and Ozempic-maker Novo Nordisk in the obesity drug market.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed support for weight-loss medications during a BBC interview, highlighting their potential benefits for both the economy and public health. He emphasised that these drugs can aid individuals in shedding excess weight, enabling them to return to work and alleviate pressure on the National Health Service (NHS).

Congress says MVA confident of victory

In a stinging attack on the MahaYuti, Chennithala said that the unconstitutional ruling coalition has indulged in massive corruption and emptied the state coffers in the past two-and-half years in power…reports Asian Lite News

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi-INDIA bloc allies asserted that they are ready for the Maharashtra Assembly elections scheduled on November 20 and exuded confidence in ousting the ruling MahaYuti regime to capture power.

Leaders of the MVA-INDIA allies Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (SP)-Shiv Sena (UBT) said that they have finalised their seat-sharing arrangements, campaign material and other weapons in their political ordnance to clobber the alliance of Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party-Nationalist Congress Party.

Moreover, several leaders including AICC General Secretary Ramesh Chennithala, state president Nana Patole, Leader of Opposition (Assembly) Vijay Wadettiwar, SS (UBT)’s Leader of Opposition (Council) Ambadas Danve, Sanjay Raut, Sushma Andhare, NCP (SP)’s Working President Supriya Sule, state chief Jayant Patil and Anil Deshmukh, and others have said that “the people will not be swayed by the pre-poll gimmicks” of the MahaYuti government.

In a stinging attack on the MahaYuti, Chennithala said that the unconstitutional ruling coalition has indulged in massive corruption and emptied the state coffers in the past two-and-half years in power.

“Though there was no provision for funds, the state government has been making misleading announcements to fool the masses. We are confident that the people will not fall for their pre-election gimmicks and will vote for a change and the development of Maharashtra,” declared Chennithala.

Patole said that barely hours before the polls were announced the MahaYuti government scrapped tolls for light motor vehicles at five Mumbai entry points, indicating the desperation of the ruling alliance leaders.

“Why only Mumbai… Why not waive off tolls for all over Maharashtra? Are the people of the city and the state different… The MahaYuti and BJP have been looting the state since 2014 and resorting to mere sloganeering,” said Patole.

SS (UBT)’s Leader of Opposition (Council) Ambadas Danve said that the MVA is fully geared up for the polls and will give a massive push to remove the corrupt MahaYuti regime where law and order have completely collapsed.

Patil slammed the manner in which the MahaYuti has emptied the state treasury and the ECI finally announced the election schedule that was delayed.

“We shall contest all the 288 Assembly seats unitedly and expose the ruling alliance, their fake promises and assurances… We shall increase and streamline the money being given under the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme,” said Patil.

Andhare said that the MVA has never opposed the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme, warned the MahaYuti leaders for taking personal credit for the dole which is actually the tax-payers money, and raised objections at the hasty manner in which 7 MLCs nominated by the Governor’s quota in the Upper House were sworn-in today morning.

Patole and Wadettiwar assured that there is no dispute over ‘Big Brother or Small Brother’ with the sole goal of ‘saving Maharashtra’ from economic peril and insecurity owing to lawlessness, atrocities on women, blatant killings, etc.

They added that the people of the state will give a befitting reply to those who allegedly carried out corruption in making the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj which crashed down in barely eight months.

“When the MVA government had given the list of 12 nominees for the Governor quota MLCs, the former Governor (Bhagat Singh Koshyari) did not clear it, then the matter went to the court whose outcome is awaited, yet the MahaYuti went ahead and appointed 7 MLCs today,” said Patole, vowing to file an appeal.

Raut urged the ECI not to make Maharashtra elections go the Haryana style where many objections/doubts were raised on various counts.

“If the ECI claims it is independent – we don’t say so – then it should watch out for all kinds of machinations, the money power, muscle power, misuse of official apparatus, etc, which is rampant in Maharashtra,” urged Raut.

All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen state President Syed Imtyaz Jaleel rued that for a huge state like Maharashtra, it was expected that the ECI would hold a two-phased election, but “they paid heed to the demands of the ruling alliance.”

NCP working president Praful Patel said the people will vote for development and good work. “Maharashtra elections are due and it is imperative to have the assembly formation before November 26. I am very happy that the Election Commission has announced the poll dates today.”

“I am very sure that in Maharashtra, the people will go for development, good work and of course the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which has led to the NDA victory for the third time as well as the fact that we have recently seen the polls in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. People have voted for good work and development and the schemes which the government of India and the respective state governments have given to the people. So I feel that in Maharashtra we will come back to power again,” he said.

The bypolls are spread over 15 states – Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

The largest number of bypolls will be held in Uttar Pradesh and seats going to the polls are Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Karhal, Phulpur, Katehari, Majhawan, and Sishamau.

The bypolls in Uttar Pradesh are crucial for BJP as it suffered a setback in Lok Sabha polls. BJP could win only 33 seats compared to 62 it won in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP would be keen to regain its winning momentum in Uttar Pradesh.

Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, won 37 seats in the Lok Sabha polls held earlier this year.  (ANI)

Tribunal rules academic’s anti-Zionism beliefs are protected under law

The tribunal, which first ruled in February that Miller had been unfairly discriminated against, has now published a 120-page judgment outlining its decision…reports Asian Lite News

An employment tribunal in the UK has ruled that an academic’s anti-Zionism should be protected under anti-discrimination laws as a “philosophical belief,” concluding that his views were “worthy of respect in a democratic society.”

The judgment came after Prof. David Miller’s dismissal from the University of Bristol in 2021, where he taught political sociology, for alleged antisemitic remarks in which he argued Zionism was inherently “racist, imperialist, and colonial,” leading to apartheid and ethnic cleansing.

The tribunal, which first ruled in February that Miller had been unfairly discriminated against, has now published a 120-page judgment outlining its decision, acknowledging the divisive nature and controversy of his comments but concluding that his beliefs were genuinely held and protected.

Judge Rohan Pirani said: “Although many would vehemently and cogently disagree with (Miller)’s analysis of politics and history, others have the same or similar beliefs. We find that he has established that (the criteria) have been met and that his belief amounted to a philosophical belief.”

The tribunal also recognized Miller’s expertise in the field and confirmed that his dismissal was due to the expression of these protected beliefs.

Miller gave a lecture in 2019 in which he identified Zionism as a pillar of Islamophobia, which prompted complaints from Jewish students and led the Community Security Trust, which campaigns against antisemitism, to call his remarks a “disgraceful slur.”

A university review found Miller had no case to answer because he did not express hatred toward Jews, but he was dismissed for gross misconduct two years later after sending an email to the university’s student newspaper.

In the email, he said, “Zionism is and always has been a racist, violent, imperialist ideology premised on ethnic cleansing” and claimed the university’s Jewish Society was tantamount to an “Israel lobby group.”

His statements were deemed offensive, leading to his eventual sacking.

However, the tribunal found that Miller’s comments were lawful and did not incite violence.

“What (Miller) said was accepted as lawful, was not antisemitic and did not incite violence and did not pose any threat to any person’s health or safety,” the tribunal decided.

Pirani found that Miller’s anti-Zionism did not equate to antisemitism or opposition to Jewish self-determination, but rather “opposition to Zionism’s realization of exclusive Jewish rights within a land that also includes a significant non-Jewish population.”

Although Miller won his case, the tribunal acknowledged that his public statements “contributed” to his dismissal, resulting in any compensation being reduced by 50 percent. The final amount will be determined in a future hearing.

Royal left tearful after visit to Sudanese refugees in Chad

Abdullah, cradling her 9-month-old baby Bayena, said they had traveled for 60 km to reach safety…reports Asian Lite News

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was brought to tears during a visit to survivors of the ongoing Sudanese genocide on the border with Chad. The duchess told The Times that she had private audiences with female survivors of the violence, which included stories of rape in return for safety and food for their families.

“What they do to the children is … I can’t even use the words,” she told the newspaper. “These women have no option but to leave.” The duchess spoke to one refugee, Hadidah Abdullah, in the town of Adre on the Chadian border with the war-torn Darfur region.

Abdullah, cradling her 9-month-old baby Bayena, said they had traveled for 60 km to reach safety. Around 230,000 refugees are in Adre, with many comparing the situation to that of the previous genocide in Darfur over 20 years ago, which killed 300,000 people.

The region, which is being fought over by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, is also experiencing famine, with millions at risk of starvation.  One woman who arrived at the camp in Adre during the duchess’s visit with five children in tow said she had not seen her husband since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023.

Others talk of the RSF forcing young men and boys into service, and killing people who refuse to cooperate. The duchess has traveled to numerous conflict zones, including Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Ukraine and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of her work helping victims of sexual violence in war.

After meeting five women at a hospital in Adre, one of them told The Times that she and her family had been trapped in the city of Geneina where they witnessed RSF atrocities, including rape and looting.

She said: “If you tried to go out … some can kill you or threaten sexual violence. More than 10 people were killed at a time and they took whatever from the houses.”

She added that her teenage son was taken by the RSF alongside her brothers to fight, and that when she and her remaining relatives escaped, they saw bodies stacked “like a wall” in the streets.

The duchess told The Times that the experience of talking to the women about their ordeals had left her feeling “quite wobbly.” She said the international community’s attention is “focused very much on other conflicts around the world,” and she wants to “shine the light” on the crisis in Sudan which, The Times said, “aid organisations rank as the world’s gravest” humanitarian crisis.

“This is a human catastrophe that is vast and Chad is having to pick up the pieces when it can ill afford to do,” Sophie said. “The organisations are saying they are seeing budgets being pulled back and things like that because the money is being siphoned to go elsewhere. And, again, whose need is greater? Everybody’s need is great but this is pretty desperate. We’ve got to keep the attention on this.”
