BJP to Retain UP With Loss of Seats: Poll

According to the latest round of opinion polls, the ruling BJP is expected to grab 40.7 per cent of the vote share in the Assembly polls, reports Asian Lite News

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to return to power in 2022 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, though with significant reduction in the number of seats that the saffron party is expected to win, as per the latest round of opinion poll of more than 72,000 samples surveyed in the ABP-CVoter-IANS poll between first weeks of October and November.

Other key political players in the state – Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Congress are not in a position to dislodge the Yogi Adityanath government in 2022, as things stand today.

According to the latest round of opinion polls, the ruling BJP is expected to grab 40.7 per cent of the vote share in the Assembly polls. Notably, the saffron party has continuously maintained its vote share of around 41 per cent in the state; in 2017 Assembly elections the BJP had garnered 41.4 per cent of the votes polled.

As for other the vote share of other key political players in the state, the survey shows that while the vote share of SP is expected to witness a jump of 7.5 per cent from 23.6 per cent in 2017 to 31.1 per cent in 2022, the BSP’s vote share is likely to witness a slump of 7.1 per cent from 22.2 per cent in 2017 to 15.1 per cent in 2022.

    BJP

The country’s grand old party – Congress, out of power in the state since 1989, is expected to get 8.9 per cent of the votes. It had secured 6.3 per cent votes in 2017.

In terms of number of seats, as per the survey data, BJP and its allies are projected to grab seats in a range of 213 to 221 seats in 2022 Assembly polls. Though BJP and its alliance partners will witness a dip of almost 100 seats from the figure of 325 seats they had won in 2017, the coalition is expected to cross the majority figure comfortably.

The total strength of Uttar Pradesh Assembly is 403 seats.

The SP and its alliance partners, emerging as key challenger to the saffron party are expected to win 152 to 160 seats this time. The survey further shows that BSP is continuously losing the political ground in the state as the party can secure victory on just 16 to 20 seats. Congress party is likely to grab 6 to 10 seats.

Notably, the survey found that more people don’t want to see incumbent Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath returning to power once again in 2022. During the survey, while 51.9 per cent of the respondents said that they don’t want Yogi Adityanath to occupy the post, 48.9 per cent expressed their opinion in his favour.

However, interestingly, when compared to other key contenders for the post of Chief Minister, Yogi is still the most preferred choice for the top post in the state. During the survey, while 41.4 per cent of the respondents said that Yogi is their preferred choice, 31.4 per cent opined in favour of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav for the top job and 15.6 per cent of the respondents said they want to see BSP supremo Mayawati as next Chief Minister.

Only 4.9 per cent of those interviewed during the survey wanted Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to be the next chief minister of the state.

Another interesting finding of the survey is that the majority of the respondents believe Mayawati, a key political player in the state for more than three decades, has become irrelevant in this election.

While 60.3 per cent of those, who were surveyed, believe that the Dalit leader is out of race for the upcoming Assembly polls, only 30.7 per cent believe that she is still a key contender.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has been actively campaigning for her party in Uttar Pradesh, leading protests over a host of issues in the recent months, however, the survey data suggests that her political activism won’t benefit the grand old party in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Out of those interviewed, while 52.8per cent% of the respondents said that Congress will not benefit from Priyanka Gandhi being active in Uttar Pradesh, 47.2 per cent believe that Gandhi will be able to woo enough voters for the party.

The Lakhimpur Kheri incident in which protesters were run over and mob lynching took place will dent the BJP’s electoral prospects, as per the latest round of survey conducted after the horrific incident.

During the survey while 62.1 per cent of the respondents opined that the Lakhimpur Kheri incident will harm the BJP’s election prospects, 21.5 per cent said that the saffron party will benefit from the incident, which snowballed into major controversy triggering widespread protests by the farming community.

The survey data suggests that the strategy Akhilesh Yadav is forging alliance with smaller parties that are essentially caste-centric with support restricted to a few districts like O.P. Rajbhar-led Suheldev Bharat Samaj Party (SBSP) will harm the BJP’s electoral prospects in the upcoming Assembly polls.

The survey data suggests that unemployment, farmers’ protest, inflation and the Ram temple will be key issues in the upcoming Assembly polls.

During the survey, while 29.7 per cent of the respondents said law and order will be the biggest issue, 16.7 per cent opined that unemployment will be the most important issue. While 14.7 per cent of those interviewed feel inflation will be the major issue, 14.1 per cent said that Ram temple will be the most significant.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the incumbent Imran Khan-led government opted out of Parliaments joint session as it had “foreseen its defeat”, Geo News reported.

Taking to Twitter, Bilawal said “Kaptaan bhag gaya” (the captain ran away), as he shared President Arif Alvi’s notification for the postponement of the session.

“Yet another victory for the United opposition in the Parliament today. Government ran away from joint sessions when they saw they would be defeated yet again. Kaptaan Bhag gaya.”

He said that they (Opposition) are not asking the government’s allies to support them on the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister now.

“Instead, we are talking only about the government’s undemocratic methods and bids to make the election commission controversial.”

Bilawal further said that the countdown to the end of PTI’s tenure has begun, adding “it’s now time for Prime minister Imran Khan to be a bundle of nerves”, the Geo News report added.

He said that he still stands firm on his idea to move a no-trust motion against Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar but they will have to make efforts for it separately.

Earlier on Wednesday, the government postponed a joint session of the Parliament that was scheduled for Thursday.

A meeting of the Federal Cabinet on Tuesday had called the session on Thursday at 11pm to pass the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance (Amendment) Bill and electoral reforms bill among other legislation items.

Later, President Alvi issued an official notification for the postponement of the joint session.

Bilawal said that the Opposition had decided to ensure their numbers to oppose the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance (Amendment) Bill and electoral reforms bill proposed by the government.

  • BSP to focus on loyalty factor in candidate selection

BSP to focus on loyalty factor in candidate selection

The BSP has been most vulnerable to splits with its MLAs marching out of the party in every political crisis…reports Asian Lite News.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati has started detailed profiling of Assembly constituencies to select winnable candidates for Uttar Pradesh polls, due early next year.

While the Samajwadi Party (SP) has already positioned itself as the main challenger to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the latter is nibbling away at BSP’s Dalit-MBC vote base.

Moreover, the BSP has lost a majority of its legislators to SP and a chunk of leaders have been expelled for unknown reasons by the party chief.

Mayawati is now working to look for candidates who can win the elections and, more importantly, remain loyal to the party.

“The party will focus on the loyalty factor because our legislators should not be vulnerable, in case the Assembly results throw up a hung Assembly. Mayawati is checking and rechecking the credentials of candidates before finalising their names,” said a senior party functionary.

The BSP has been most vulnerable to splits with its MLAs marching out of the party in every political crisis.

Mayawati has also asked party leaders to strengthen the party’s organisational structure to counter the well-oiled machinery of BJP, which is backed by cadres of its ideological mentor RSS and its Hindutva arm, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

The aggressive entry of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has only added to the concerns of the BSP.

Mayawati, sources said, wants to mobilise cadres that can help improve the party’s vote percentage that has been on a decline since 2012 Assembly elections.

The party has put issues like farmers’ stir against new farm laws, unemployment and poor law and order high on its agenda.

Mayawati has already whipped out a Brahmin card to replay her social engineering formula that propelled her to power with absolute majority for the first time in 2007 Assembly elections.

Mayawati also seeks to play ‘soft Hindutva’ to woo the upper caste, which has traditionally been voting in favour of the BJP.

She had set the idea rolling with MP and party’s Brahmin face S.C. Mishra addressing ‘Prabuddh Varg Sammelans’ across the state to woo the upper caste.

The move, party sources said, may essentially help in 80 reserved seats, where BSP has not been performing well in the past.

Imran Khan was questioned about the progress his government made in the case, with the bench raising serious reservations on the recent ceasefire agreement between the government and the TTP…reports Hamza Ameer

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was summoned by the Supreme Court, on Wednesday briefed it on the progress made in the 2014 Army Public School (APS) attack case, which still haunts the victims’ families, loved ones and people at large.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed and comprising Justices Qazi Mohammad Amin Ahmed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, had summoned the Pakistan Premier at around 10 a.m. He arrived at the court roughly two hours later, just before noon.

The court was hearing the APS attack case, in which terrorists of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had stormed the Army Public School located on Warsak Road in Peshawar on December 16, 2014, brutally killing a total of 147 people, including 132 young children.

The hearing began with the Prime Minister present in courtroom No 1 along with a number of lawyers, security personnel, families of APS attack victims and PTI ministers, including Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Information Minister 1Fawad Chaudhry.

Imran Khan was questioned about the progress his government made in the case, with the bench raising serious reservations on the recent ceasefire agreement between the government and the TTP, which had claimed responsibility of the attack at the school.

The court criticised the Prime Minister for not taking enough steps to satisfy the families of the killed children and others in the attack, but instead talking with the TTP, as it termed the ceasefire agreement as “compromised agreement” with the killers of the country’s children.

“The satisfaction of the parents who lost their children in the APS attack is necessary,” said Justice Ahsan told him.

Imran Khan was also reminded that it was his responsibility to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice and the families of the loved ones are assured of complete support, as the court directed the government to submit a progress report within four weeks.

The Supreme Court bench, during the last hearing, had assured the families of the victims of all out assistance and support by the court in fulfilment of their demands.

“The AG (Attorney General) has been put on notice on the complaints and asked to take action, as required by the law, and if those who have been named are found guilty of negligence in the performance of their duties, necessary measures should be taken,” its order issued then read.

In Wednesday’s hearing, the court grilled the AG when he said that the order of the last hearing was not sent to the Premier.

“Is this the level of seriousness? Call the Prime Minister; we will talk to him ourselves. This cannot go on,” the Chief Justice said.

The family members of the victims had demanded registration of an FIR against those civilian and military officials who, they believe, were responsible for security measures at the school.

The Supreme Court had also raised serious questions over the capabilities of the country’s intelligence agencies, questioning their “disappearance” when it comes to the protection of their own citizens.

“Where do the intelligence agencies disappear when it comes to the protection of their own citizens? Was a case registered against the then army chief and other responsible?” the CJP asked.

“There is such a huge intelligence system in the country. Billion of rupees are spent on it. There is also a claim that we are the best intelligence agency in the world. So much is being spent on intelligence but the results are zero,” he said.

“The institutions should have known there would be a reaction to the operations in the tribal areas. The easiest and most sensitive target were children,” Justice Ahsan said.

Army Rejects Imran’s Pleas on TLP

According to the sources, the army chief said if the decision-makers were ready to pay the price for using force against the TLP, then the military would do as ordered….reports Asian Lite News

The row between Pakistan PM and Army continues as the military leadership had advised against the use of force against the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protesters after Prime Minister Imran Khan had authorised it, Dawn reported.

According to sources privy to the fast-paced developments taking place, the Pakistan prime minister had authorised the use of force against the TLP marchers. Once this authorisation was relayed, the Pakistan military leadership reviewed the operational dynamics and possible consequences of using force against the crowd. They calculated what it would entail to apply force against the marchers, and how many casualties could take place if the law enforcers were to use the last resort and open fire on those refusing to disperse. The leadership also factored into this calculation the probable blowback of casualties and its impact on public opinion.

According to sources, Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa presented all the pros and cons of using force against TLP workers when the political and military leadership gathered to discuss the issue at the National Security Committee meeting that took place on October 29.

People who know the details of this meeting have confirmed to Dawn that the army chief said if the decision-makers were ready to pay the price for using force against the TLP, then the military would do as ordered. However, mention was made of the previous instances where the government had used force against citizens — Lal Masjid and the Model Town incident — and participants of the meeting were reminded of the consequences of both episodes.

By the time this meeting took place however, the government had already taken a tough line and Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had quoted the prime minister as telling the cabinet on October 27 that the government would not allow anyone to take the law into their hands and challenge the writ of the state.

The military leadership, however, advised against the use of force arguing that it was not a solution. It was then decided to opt for a negotiated settlement in order to, as one source put it, ‘avoid bloodshed’. This is when Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman was identified as someone who could mediate an agreement given his standing as a senior Barelvi cleric.

    Pak NSA warns TLP protesters

After having taken the political leadership on board, the Pakistan government has in principle decided to make public the agreement it signed with the TLP but kept secret till its implementation was well under way.

Participants of the briefing told Dawn the senior military officials informed them about how the agreement came about and why it was decided to keep it secret for this long.

According to these officials, the primary objective was to get the TLP protesters off the streets so the situation could return to normal. In this context, there was a concern that unveiling the contents of the agreement at an early stage could have triggered a public debate that may have impeded its implementation that in turn was linked with the ending of the protest.

TRUCE WITH TTP: Dawn Turns Heat on Imran

“The people of Pakistan are major stakeholders in this debate — having borne the brunt of the TTP’s militancy — and they must have their say in the final decision,” according to Dawn’s Editorial, reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan is back to signing secret peace agreements with militant groups, this time with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has been involved in killing several thousand civilians, including over 130 school children.

Such abject surrender to terrorists has rarely happened anywhere else but Pakistan. The banned outfit has declared a one-month ceasefire, starting from November 9.

Domestic Pakistani critics, among them political parties, civil society and sections of the media have called it surrender and capitulation.

Meanwhile, in its Tuesday Editorial, the Pakistani daily Dawn, criticised this secret deal made by the goverment with TTP without a proper debate in the Parliament “in full glare of the media.”

“The unfortunate part is that there has been almost negligible public input in this matter. The government has quietly initiated these talks and brought them to a stage where a ceasefire is now in effect. There have been hints all along the way for sure — from the president, the foreign minister and later the prime minister who chose to reveal on an international channel that talks were ongoing with the TTP,” the Editorial said.

Like his predecessors, Imran Khan has also decided to keep the contours of the peace pact with TTP secret. The public, as always, remain ignorant about the concessions given to TTP.

According to reports, Afghan Taliban are playing the mediator role between the terror outfit and the government.

The Editorial said there is “no information in terms of what Pakistan has offered in return for this ceasefire, who is on the government’s team, and what concessions are being considered for those who have the blood of Pakistanis on their hands.”

It said the issue “may have been discussed at the briefing on Monday and various parliamentary leaders would have given their suggestions, but it is a bit late to be taking them into confidence when negotiations are already in an advanced stage.”

“The people of Pakistan are major stakeholders in this debate — having borne the brunt of the TTP’s militancy — and they must have their say in the final decision. The parliamentarians should use the material from this briefing to initiate a debate on the floor of both Houses before any final deal with the TTP is agreed upon. The government must come clean on this issue,” Dawn stated.

Imran Khan had been a supporter of TTP and other militant groups for long which had earned him the sobriquet of ‘Taliban Khan’. Faced with a colossal failure as a Prime Minister and souring relationship with the army, Imran Khan has decided to draw on the support of militant groups like Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and TTP to shore up his position in the hybrid regime that currently rules Pakistan.

    (Pic credit: IANS)

But Imran Khan seems to be in no mood to learn from the recent history of failures. He is not worried what kind of message his capitulation to TLP and TTP would send to over 250 religious outfits in Pakistan — that violence was rewarding, that holding the country to ransom through acts of ransom and violence would give them a leverage over democratically-elected governments.

The so-called peace pacts with militant groups, first with TLP and now with TTP, exposes the grim reality of Pakistan’s counter-terrorism policy, a fact which must be noted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) at its next meeting. (with inputs from IANS)

Be a bridge of faith, PM tells BJP workers

Referring to “selfless service” of BJP workers during the pandemic, Modi said that a “new culture of service has been demonstrated by the ‘karyakartas’ during the pandemic under party chief J.P. Nadda”…reports Asian Lite News.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday asked BJP workers to reach out to the people and work as a “bridge of faith” for the common man.

At his address at the concluding session of day-long BJP national executive meet at NDMC Convention Centre here, he also highlighted that today the place that the BJP is at is due to the fact that it has always been connected with the common man since its starting days, and has moved ahead with hard work and dedication of workers, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav said.

“Prime Minister said that BJP workers have to become a bridge of faith for the common man. BJP is not a family-based party.

“The Prime Minister also called service to people is the highest form of worship and advised workers to be with the people and stay in touch with common man,” he added.

Sources said that Modi advised BJP leaders to focus on the issues the party has raised for the people during and before and after elections and to continue doing so. “We must continue to address the issues concerning people,” he said, as per the sources.

Referring to “selfless service” of BJP workers during the pandemic, Modi said that a “new culture of service has been demonstrated by the ‘karyakartas’ during the pandemic under party chief J.P. Nadda”.

Before the Prime Minister’s address, state presidents of five poll-bound states presented a report about their preparedness, and the Punjab chief said that they were gearing up to contest all 117 seats. Chief Ministers of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur also present a report card about their works.

“After hearing the reports of state Presidents and Chief Minister of poll-bound five states, the Prime Minister said that seeing the confidence, BJP will perform exceptionally well and this is beauty of service,” Yadav said.

He also said that the state chiefs and Chief Ministers have derived this confidence from work they have done for their states in the past five years, Yadav added.

BJP gears up for polls with ‘old wine in new bottle’

The BJP’s political resolutions reflect its core agenda of promoting Hindutva from the speeches of Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath….reports Asian Lite News

The BJP is likely to make the construction of the grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and ‘Jai Shri Ram’ the major issues in the next year’s Assembly polls in five states, especially in Uttar Pradesh, where it is strengthening its connect with cadre vote bank and is targeting the main opposition — Samajwadi Party (SP) and its chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Talking to IANS, a veteran BJP national leader said: “For us, Lord Shri Ram and the construction of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya was never an election agenda, but an issue that once isolated us in Indian politics. It is necessary to tell the public about the achievements related to it.”

Another Uttar Pradesh minister told IANS: “We must tell people that the Supreme Court’s historic decision came during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the construction of the Ram temple during the tenure of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. We also celebrated a record breaking ‘Deepotsav’ this year. Along with this, it is also necessary to educate people about what happened in 1990 and what can happen if these people come to power again.”

The BJP’s political resolutions reflect its core agenda of promoting Hindutva from the speeches of Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the people during his Kedarnath tour on November 5, had mentioned about Ayodhya. He said: “Just two days ago, the whole world witnessed the celebration of ‘Deepotsav’ in Ayodhya. Can you imagine how beautiful our ancient cultural form would have been?”

Along with this, he also highlighted the rejuvenation of Kashi and the work of Baba Vishwanath Dham which is moving towards completion at a very fast pace.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while speaking at various programmes of Deepotsav, organized in Ayodhya, on November 3, claimed that no one can stop the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya and it will be ready for devotees by 2023.

Reminding people of the massacre of Kar Sevaks in 1990, he said, “What was happening in Ayodhya 31 years ago? On October 30 and November 2, 1990, Ram bhakts were fired in a barbaric manner. There was also lathi-charge. Chanting Jai Shri Ram slogan was considered a crime back then.”

Targeting Akhilesh Yadav’s family, he said: “Those who were firing on Ram Bhakts 31 years ago, now bow down before you. Today it seems like if you keep supporting our agenda, the Yadav family will soon become Kar Sevaks to please you.”

Yogi also assured the people that apart from the Ram Temple, other temples of the state and the devotees of Lord Ram and Krishna, will also be taken care of by his government.

He said: “We will shower flowers on the devotees of Rama and Krishna and take care of all the temples in the state.”

Criticising Akhilesh, Yogi said, “The Akhilesh Yadav government only spent money on graveyards in the state. But the BJP government is focusing on 500 pilgrimages including the Ram Janmabhoomi, Kashi Vishwanath and Naimisharanya Tirth in the state. Out of these, 300 works have been completed and work on another 200 is in progress.”

Realising that SP is the main contender in the Uttar Pradesh polls, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to highlight its achievements at the Centre and state before the public and is sticking to its core agenda of Hindutva to beat its opponents.

Chief Nadda has asked to complete the formation of the committees by December 25 To strengthen the party at ground level…reports Asian Lite News

Gearing up for the 2022 Assembly polls and next general election, the BJP has decided to complete the formation of booth committees at over 10 lakh polling stations across the country by year end.

Addressing the inaugural session of BJP National Executive Committee meet here, party chief J.P. Nadda set the target to complete the process of forming the booth committees.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that to strengthen the party at ground level chief Nadda has asked to complete the formation of the committees by December 25.

“Formation of booth committees have been completed in 85 per cent of polling booths and remaining work will be completed by December 25,” Pradhan said.

The party has also decided to implement the successful ‘page committee’ concept of Gujarat across the country.

“Page committee will be formed across the country and appointment of ‘Panna Pramukh’ will be completed by April 6, next year,” Pradhan said

He said that Nadda also asked for an institutionalised mechanism to listen to the Prime Minister’s ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio programme at each polling booth.

“Party chief talked about three works to strengthen the organisation at ground level as BJP has yet to reach its ‘Utkarsh’ (peak),” he said.

Nadda also talked about election results and said that BJP’s victory in Huzurabad shows it’s rise in Telangana.

“Nadda also said that BJP is getting strong in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to win the next elections,” Pradhan said.

In his address, Nadda thanked the people of West Bengal who supported the BJP in this year’s Assembly polls.

“In the 2016 Assembly polls, the BJP’s vote share was negligible, now it’s 38 per cent. We have got the blessings of Bengal. In political history, such rapid growth in vote share has never been registered. the BJP chief assured people of West Bengal that the party is with them,” Pradhan said.

Pradhan added that Nadda in his address also mentioned about the repeal of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, which is now on the path of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Talking about the meet, Pradhan said that it is being held in a hybrid mode.

“All participants have registered digitally, including Prime Minister Modi, L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi are also attending the meeting virtually from their homes,” Pradhan said.
