Prakash Karat to coordinate CPM politburo functioning

The next permanent General Secretary will be selected at the next party congress scheduled to be held at Madurai in Tamil Nadu in April next year….reports Asian Lite News

After the sudden demise of the CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury earlier this month, the party will now function through the collective leadership of the exiting politburo with Yechury’s predecessor Prakash Karat acting as the “politburo coordinator.”

The next permanent General Secretary will be selected at the next party congress scheduled to be held at Madurai in Tamil Nadu in April next year.

A decision to function through collective leadership of the existing politburo was made at the party’s politburo meeting on Saturday. On Monday, the party’s central committee cleared that proposal and also selected Karat as the “politburo coordinator” during the interim period till the next party congress.

“The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) now in session in New Delhi, has decided that Comrade Prakash Karat will be the coordinator of the politburo and the central committee, as an interim arrangement until the 24th Party Congress to be held in April 2025 at Madurai. This decision was taken due to the sad and sudden demise of the sitting General Secretary of the CPI-M, Comrade Sitaram Yechury,” a statement issued by the party on Sunday afternoon read.

As per the party’s constitution, any decision of the party politburo is subject to the final clearance of the central committee.

On Saturday only, a politburo member from West Bengal pointed out that the party’s constitution does not allow having the post of a ‘working general secretary’. “There is nothing called ‘interim’ in our party. The new central committee and the politburo will be selected at the next party Congress in Madurai next year. There only the new party General Secretary will be selected,” he said.

Yechury was the first existing General Secretary to die before the end of his term. He was supposed to be replaced at the Madurai party congress as he would have completed his third term in office.

Won’t die till Modi ‘removed’ from power: Kharge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and inquired about his health after his sudden illness during campaigning…reports Asian Lite News

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who fell ill while addressing a poll campaign rally in J&K’s Kathua district on Sunday, said that he won’t die till Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “removed” from power.

While addressing a huge gathering on the last day of the campaign for the third and final phase of the state Assembly elections, he said: “We will fight to restore statehood. I am 83 years old, I am not going to die so early. I will stay alive until Prime Minister Narendra Modi is removed from power.”

As Kharge fell dizzy on stage, several party leaders rushed to support him.

Claiming that the Central government never wanted to conduct elections in J&K, Kharge said: “They would have done it within a couple of years if they wanted to. They started preparing for elections after the Supreme Court’s order. They did not want elections. They wanted to operate a remote-controlled government through the Lt Governor.”

Alleging that PM Modi did not give anything to the country’s youth in the last 10 years, Kharge said: “Can you believe in a person who cannot bring back your prosperity in 10 years? If a BJP leader comes in front of you, ask them if they brought prosperity or not.”

After the campaign rally, the Congress president will undergo a preliminary medical examination to ascertain the reason for dizziness.

The National Conference and Congress are fighting the J&K Assembly polls in a pre-poll alliance against the BJP. According to the terms of the agreement between the two parties, the NC has fielded candidates for 52 constituencies and the Congress for 31.

The two alliance partners have left two seats uncontested, one in the Kashmir Valley for CPI-M and the other in the Jammu division for the Panthers Party.

Both, the Congress and the NC have fielded candidates for five seats in Sopore, Nagrota, Kishtwar, Doda and Banihal. The two parties are poised for a friendly contest in these five seats.

Two phases of the three-phased J&K Assembly polls ended on September 18 and September 25. Voting for the third and final phase is scheduled for October 1. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 8.

Around 40 Assembly seats, including 11 in Jammu, six in Kathua, three in Samba and four in Udhampur districts of Jammu division, will go to polls on October 1.

In the two districts of Baramulla and Kupwara of the Valley, 16 Assembly constituencies will vote.

Campaigning for the third phase will end at 6 p.m. on Sunday

Shah slams Kharge over remarks on PM

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday criticised Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying it was “distasteful and disgraceful”.

Taking this to social media X, HM Shah stated, “Yesterday, the Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge Ji has outperformed himself, his leaders and his party in being absolutely distasteful and disgraceful in his speech.”

“In a bitter display of spite, he unnecessarily dragged PM Modi into his personal health matters by saying that he would die only after removing PM Modi from power. It just shows how much hate and fear these Congress people have of PM Modi, that they are thinking of him constantly,” said HM Shah.

HM Shah further stated, “As for the health of Kharge, PM Modi prays, I pray and we all pray that he lives a long, healthy life. May he continue to live for many years and may he live to see the creation of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and inquired about his health after his sudden illness during campaigning.

“PM Modi spoke to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Ji and enquired about his health,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Rahul pays tribute to CPM leader Yechury

The Congress president said Yechury had an endearing personality who was liked and respected by people across the party lines…reports Asian Lite News

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the Leader of Opposition (Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi on Saturday paid tributes to the late Sitaram Yechury at his memorial ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Kharge said, Yechury had a great capacity to carry along everyone. He said that the late CPM leader had a great contribution in forging together the INDIA bloc.

The Congress president said Yechury had an endearing personality who was liked and respected by people across the party lines. Kharge recalled his association with Yechury particularly during the period of the formation of the INDIA bloc.

Speaking on the occasion Rahul Gandhi described Yechury as a friend, who operated in the political system. “He was the person you could trust,” he remarked.

“When people look at politics from outside, it’s not easy to see the dynamics that take place inside the political system. It’s an unforgiving place, harsh place, uncomfortable place and it brings out mostly the worst in people. It’s rare that you see that politics brings out the best in a person. I saw Yechury from the first day I started my political journey. I observed him quite carefully. What I found was a person who was flexible, who listened, who even though he was on the opposite spectrum ideologically, had the ability to understand where we were coming from and he also allowed us to understand where he was coming from. He was a bridge in a sense between certainly, the Congress party and other parties in the INDIA bloc,” he said.

He said that Yechury was such a figure, who in the INDIA bloc certainly and the erstwhile UPA, held the architecture together.

“He held the architecture together, because he was flexible, because he listened and he didn’t have the common traits that a lot of politicians have- anger, aggression, arrogance. These things were missing and this is rare in our work; so, he was a friend,” Rahul Gandhi added.

“The only thing I could say is that he was a person you could trust. He was a person that you were sure, a hundred per cent sure that he wasn’t compromised. In today’s situation where there are pressures, it’s easy to get compromised; he was not compromised and whatever he did, he always did for the interest of our country,” he said.

CPM likely to continue without permanent Gen Secy

Amid the sudden and untimely demise of the erstwhile CPI(M) general secretary Late Sitaram Yechury earlier this month, the party will probably function through the collective leadership of the exiting politburo with the possibilities of a “central coordinator” till next year.

The next party congress is scheduled in April 2025 at Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

Sources said that the decision was taken at the two-day politburo meeting of the party on Friday and Saturday. The politburo decision is probably bringing an end to speculations that there might be an interim and acting general secretary of the party till the next party congress.

However, the probable factor of the stamp on the politburo decision will be final only after the central committee meeting of the party on Monday, since as per party constitution any decision of the party politburo is subject to the final clearance of the central committee.

“The party constitution does not allow us to have the post of ‘working general secretary’. There is nothing called ‘interim’ in our party. The new central committee and the politburo will be selected at the next party Congress in Madurai next year. There only the new party general secretary will be selected,” confirmed a politburo member from West Bengal.

He admitted that this is the first time that the party has faced a situation where an existing general secretary has passed off before the end of his term.

Yechury was supposed to be replaced at the Madurai party congress as he would have completed his third term as the party general secretary.

Sources said he could have played an important role in finalising the next face as his successor.

  • Rise of Udhayanidhi: From movie star to Deputy CM

Rise of Udhayanidhi: From movie star to Deputy CM

Udhaynidhi Stalin started his career as a movie producer and later became an actor….reports Asian Lite News

Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who has been appointed the Deputy Chief Minister, is already in the league of leaders from South India who tasted success in cinema as well as in politics, after making a foray into public life.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is the Minister for Sports Development and Youth Affairs, will take oath as Deputy CM on Sunday during the Cabinet reshuffle, highly placed sources in the CMO said on Saturday.

He is the third Deputy Chief Minister of the state after his father M.K. Stalin and AIADMK leader, O. Panneerselvam (OPS). He is the third generation leader from the first family of DMK to be in a crucial post in the Tamil Nadu government.

    M. Karunanidhi, the DMK patriarch was the Chief Minister of the state for several terms and his son M.K. Stalin became the Chief Minister of the state in 2021. With Udhayanidhi becoming a minister in the Stalin cabinet in December 2022, he became the third generation leader from the party who has become a minister in the state government.

Udhaynidhi Stalin started his career as a movie producer and later became an actor. He entered the film industry as a producer and distributor with his production studio Red Giant Movies making films including Kuruvi (2008), Aadhavan (2009), Manmadan Ambu (2010) and 7aum Arivu (2011).

He subsequently made his debut as an actor in the romantic comedy, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (2012) and since then continued producing and starring in his own films. He stopped his acting career in 2023 to focus on politics. The DMK family scion is currently the Youth wing president of the DMK and has extensively campaigned across the state during the 2021 assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, however, is also known for his controversial remarks. While addressing a conference in September 2023, organised by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Artists Association on the theme of “Eradication of Sanatana”, he remarked that “sanatana cannot be simply opposed, but had to be eradicated” and said that it is against social justice and equality.

Besides drawing widespread condemnation from political parties and leaders for his remarks, Udhayanidhi Stalin’s statement was also slammed by the Madras High Court.

A senior Supreme Court lawyer, Vineet Jindal, also reported the remarks to the Delhi Police, calling them “provocative, inciting and defamatory”. A letter signed by 262 notable citizens was sent to Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud who was requested to see the Supreme Court take up the case on its own.

The Supreme Court subsequently began an investigation into the remarks and on March 4, 2024, during the hearing of a plea, the apex court rebuked Udhayanidhi Stalin over his remarks and questioned why he had approached the court to consolidate the FIRs filed against him after allegedly misusing his right to freedom of speech and expression. Udhayanidhi Stalin, however, somehow managed to steer clear of the mess, and with a “good grip” among the DMK leadership as well as grassroot cadres, he single-handedly managed the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

He criss-crossed across Tamil Nadu during the Lok Sabha polls and connected with the party cadres across the state.

Senthil Balaji to get Electricity portfolio

The Chief Minister has allocated the Electricity portfolio to Senthil Balaji which he was holding along with Excise and Prohibition while he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 14, 2023. Senthil Balaji has, according to sources in DMK, conveyed to the Chief Minister his lack of interest in the Excise portfolio and said that he will hold the Electricity portfolio only.

Interestingly, Stalin has allocated the crucial Higher Education minister portfolio to Govi Chezhian, a Dalit leader and the chief whip of DMK at present.

He is replacing the high-profile minister K. Ponmudi who has been relegated to the relatively less important Forest portfolio.

The elevation of Udhayanidhi Stalin as the Deputy Chief Minister with added portfolios of Planing and Development is one of the major political developments in the Dravidian major. DMK will be entering into a third-generation leadership change with this.

DMK is also inducting Salem North MLA of the party R. Rajendran who is the lone MLA for DMK in Salem district among a total of 11 legislators in the district with the rest of the seats won by AIADMK and PMK. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin had earlier publicly stated the importance of Rajendran in Salem for the party and hence, had indicated his possible elevation as a minister. Rajendran will be allocated the Tourism portfolio that was held by K. Ramachandran, who is dropped from the Cabinet.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman demanded practical actions regarding Independent Power Producers (IPPs) agreements, instead of mere public statements…reports Asian Lite News

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced protests on major highways across Pakistan against the government’s failure to implement the Rawalpindi Agreement, ARY News reported.

The party’s announcement came after JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman made the statement. During an emergency meeting at Mansoorah, attended by JI leadership from central and provincial cities online, JI Chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman slammed the government for taking “cosmetic measures” in the past 45 days, according to ARY News report.

He said that JI rejects the superficial steps and announced that the party will hold sit-ins on key highways on September 29. Rehman called for immediate relief in electricity bills for the entire country and urged the government to implement uniform tariffs on the basis of the actual cost of production.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman demanded practical actions regarding Independent Power Producers (IPPs) agreements, instead of mere public statements, according to ARY News report.

Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Amir announced nationwide sit-ins starting from September 29 to demand a reduction in electricity prices.

While addressing a press conference in Lahore, the JI chief Hafiz Muhammad Naeem said that the ongoing ‘Haq Do Awam Ko’ movement, aimed at providing relief to the public, especially on the rising electricity bills.

Hafiz Muhammad Naeem said that the party had previously held a 14-day sit-in in Rawalpindi and a shutterdown strike across the nation, which he stressed was well organised in the history of Pakistan, ARY News reported.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced the next phase of movement as the deadline regarding the Pakistani government’s written agreement with JI, pledging to address their demands within 45 days, has now passed.

The sit-ins will be held on major highways in Pakistan. Furthermore, JI plans to express solidarity with the people of Palestine and Lebanon from October 1-7. Following this, the movement will transition into a resistance campaign.

    PTI to hold rally

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is all set to hold a protest at Liaquat Bagh in the ‘container-sieged’ Rawalpindi today, ARY News reported.

According to details, PTI leadership, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Ali Amin Gandapur, will lead the protests. Gandapur will address PTI workers at Swabi Interchange, where they will join from all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and later converge at Liaquat Bagh.

Security arrangements have been put in place, with the suspension of metro bus service, and containers been placed on roads leading to Liaquat Bagh. Police and security forces have been deployed in Rawalpindi in large numbers to maintain law and order, according to ARY News report.

A security lockdown has been placed in the city, with blocking of routes joining Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab and containers placed on the roads leading to Rawalpindi. The motorway M-1 and GT Road have been blocked at various points, including Attock Bridge, Fateh Jang, and Wah Garden.

Several roads in Rawalpindi have been blocked, including Faizabad, Mandra, Chakwal Mor, T-Chowk, 26 Number Chungi, and GT Road. In addition, Park Road, Kalma Chowk, Dhok Syedan Road, Tench Bata, Mandi Mor, and Fourth Avenue have also been blocked.

Ahead of PTI’s public gathering, the Punjab government has imposed section 144 in Rawalpindi. According to the notification, the district administration imposed a ban on all types of gatherings, rallies, protests, and weapon displays. The restriction will remain in effect on September 28 and 29.

The notification imposing Section 144 was issued a day prior to the PTI’s public gathering in Rawalpindi. Meanwhile, section 144 of CrPC has also been imposed in Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal districts, ARY News reported. (ANI)

King marks 25th anniversary of Scottish Parliament

During his speech the King, who was joined by the Queen on his visit, told the Parliament that when it reconvened in 1999 it marked a “new dawn” for the country….reports Asian Lite News

King Charles has warned there is “much more to be done” to combat climate change as he marked the “important” 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament.

The monarch fondly recalled his late mother’s love for Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire – where she spent her final days – in his speech, and said Scotland held a “uniquely special” place in his heart.

After his speech the King – who has been undergoing treatment for cancer since February – met a number of “local heroes”, who were recognised for the impact they have made in their communities. MSPs also heard speeches from party leaders and musical performances from a variety of acts.

During his speech the King, who was joined by the Queen on his visit, told the Parliament that when it reconvened in 1999 it marked a “new dawn” for the country.

He said that the values inscribed on the mace his mother had given the Parliament 25 years ago – wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity – were the “most Scottish of values”.

He added: “We are often told that we live in an era of polarisation and division. “If that is so, then it is perhaps even more important, not less, that in the vital areas of representation, of political debate, of policymaking and of discourse, these values – together with hope, civility, and generosity of spirit – are never far from the heart of even the most difficult of issues.”

However, the King later added action would be needed to handle the challenge of climate change. He said: “Today is an important milestone. As we look ahead to the next quarter of a century and beyond, there remains much more to be done, for Scotland, for the United Kingdom and, equally, in addressing the challenges we all share as inhabitants of a planet whose climate is changing dangerously and whose biodiversity is being seriously depleted.”

The King attended the Scottish Parliament opening in 1999 – when he was Prince Charles, and has attended several times since then.

He recalled that it was an “extraordinary occasion” 25 years ago and it was a “great, somewhat daunting” responsibility for MSPs to take on. However, he said that everyone there was “united by our love of Scotland” and praised the nation’s “extraordinary diversity”.

He said: “From the central belt, to the North Highlands, across the islands, in Ayrshire, in the Borders, the cities, towns, and villages, or the coastal communities, who, I wonder, could not fail to be moved by this complex Caledonian kaleidoscope? Speaking from a personal perspective, Scotland has always had a uniquely special place in the hearts of my family and myself. My beloved grandmother was proudly Scottish, my late mother especially treasured the time spent at Balmoral, and it was there in the most beloved of places, where she chose to spend her final days.”

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Sistema Scotland, Gaelic song chorus Còisir Alba and mandolin and guitarist Calum McIlroy – who won the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician prize this year – all performed.

Following the King’s speech the leaders of Scotland’s political parties all spoke.

First Minister and SNP leader John Swinney said the event celebrated “25 years in which the Scottish Parliament has changed lives for the better” and that it had been “at the heart of the nation” since 1999.

He cited several achievements, such as marriage equality, as having helped make Scotland a fairer society. He said: “I hope Scotland will continue to shine as a beacon of enlightenment across stormy seas, a refuge for reason in the world, a wellspring of modern thought and creativity.”

In his first speech since becoming Scottish Tory leader on Friday, Russell Findlay called on the Parliament to “realign” with the public and said that too many people felt “detached” from the chamber.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said he believed “Scotland’s best days lie ahead of us” and Alex Cole-Hamilton of the Scottish Liberal Democrats described the Parliament as a “cathedral of ideas” which had shown it could be “transformative” for people’s lives.

However, Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie warned that the Parliament’s “journey is far from complete”. Outside, a group of republicans peacefully demonstrated against the monarchy, chanting “Not My King” and waving yellow and black “Down with the Crown” placards as the royals were driven to the Scottish Parliament.

Duffield quits Labour over PM’s ‘hypocrisy’

In a blistering resignation letter, Duffield denounced Starmer for pursuing “cruel and unnecessary” policies….reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Keir Starmer reeled from its first resignation Saturday, as lawmaker Rosie Duffield quit the Labour Party, accusing him of “hypocrisy” over his acceptance of free gifts.

In a blistering resignation letter, Duffield denounced Starmer for pursuing “cruel and unnecessary” policies.

“The sleaze, nepotism and apparent avarice are off the scale,” she wrote, after it emerged earlier this month that Starmer had accepted more than £100,000 in gifts and hospitality while cutting an annual £300 winter heating payment to some 10 million pensioners.

“I am so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done to tarnish and humiliate our once proud party.”

Duffield said the “hypocrisy” of a leader enjoying expensive free clothing and outings while asking others to tighten their belts was “staggering.”

She also attacked the prime minister’s decision to maintain a cap on a benefit aimed at supporting families with children.

“Someone with far-above-average wealth choosing to keep the Conservatives’ two-child limit to benefit payments which entrenches children in poverty, while inexplicably accepting expensive personal gifts of designer suits and glasses costing more than most of those people can grasp — this is entirely undeserving of holding the title of Labour Prime Minister,” she wrote.

Duffield said that she would in the future sit as an independent MP “guided by my core Labour values.”

The row over the free gifts from rich donors had already cast a shadow over the party’s first conference since they returned to government.

Labour ousted the Conservatives in a landslide election win in July after 14 years in opposition.

But instead of toasting their victory at the conference earlier this week, ministers found themselves on the backfoot and facing anger from the normally supportive unions.

All of the gifts accepted by Starmer had been declared and none fall foul of parliamentary rules.

But records show that Starmer accepted more than £100,000 ($132,000) in gifts and hospitality since December 2019, more than any other lawmaker.

It also emerged that Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner accepted the loan of a New York apartment for a holiday and that Chancellor Rachel Reeves accepted around £7,500 worth of clothing.

Reeves and the Labour party have defended the abolition of the £300 payment to many pensioners to help them heat their homes, citing a need to fill a “£22 billion black hole” they say was left by the Conservatives.

Attacking Starmer’s “managerial and technocratic approach” in her letter, first reported in The Sunday Times, Duffield also reproached Starmer for poor politics.

His “lack of basic… political instincts” had “come crashing down on us as a party after we worked so hard, promised so much, and waited a long 14 years to be mandated by the British public.”

Starmer lost a symbolic vote at the conference demanding that he reverse the contentious policy. The vote was non-binding but its outcome was nonetheless embarrassing for the premier. It highlighted the strength of feeling among activists and union backers.

Delegates narrowly backed a union motion calling for the cut to be reversed. “I do not understand how our new Labour Government can cut the winter fuel allowance for pensioners and leave the super rich untouched,” said the Unite union general secretary Sharon Graham.

  • ‘Starmer Faces Reality’

    ‘Starmer Faces Reality’

The working people, the phrase Starmer and Reeves always use, do not have friends who would give them such gifts. By accepting these gifts Starmer, Raynor and Reeves put themselves on a pedestal high above the working people and in a very different class … writes Mihir Bose

It was not meant to be like this. Keir Starmer had won office promising change, and we were told that the changes would be so welcome we would feel we are living in a new country which was infinitely better than the grubby one left behind by fourteen years of Tory rule. Yet three months into his government many now feel that the change Starmer talks about is not change for the better but either no change or something much worse. We are not quite at the stage where we are saying Come Back Rishi, all is forgiven but we do not feel like saying how wonderful Keir is.

When we should excitingly be discussing how the country can improve and how we can get growth going which will mean more money in our pockets we are wondering about the wonderful presents Starmer, and his wife have had. It makes you feel that the Starmers are enjoying their own private Christmas long before Santa has even got up to get his sledges ready.

So how did we get to this state? For a start we live in an age where we expect our politicians to be more open about their lives and also expect them to maintain standards in public life that their predecessors never did. Take gifts. A few days ago, I met a very distinguished former politician of this country at a party. I mentioned to him how in the past I had never worried about the clothes the Prime Minister was wearing or where he got his glasses from. He smiled and said well Churchill got presents and so did Disraeli. Indeed, they did and Lloyd George, one of this country’s greatest prime ministers, was corrupt. What is more his predecessor Herbert Asquith, just as the first world war was starting, had an affair with Venetia Stanley, a pretty young woman. He made love to her on the back seat of a sedan while being driven round London, showing her secret, highly confidential, documents which he then tossed  out of the car leading to an inquiry as to how these secret papers were being found on the London streets. We know about all this from Robert Harris’s new novel Precipice.

Harris, an excellent journalist, bases his novels on historical events. In what I consider his best novel, The Fatherland,  he gave a very interesting twist to history, imagining what might have happened had the Nazis won the war. This novel is based on having been given access to an archive of letters, telegrams and official documents in the possession of the Bonham-Carter family. Many of them are reprinted in the novel, several for the first time. The Guardian reviewer said Harris has left the framework of history intact, his only invention being the character of a detective to act as the envoy of the writer and reader. That Harris had constructed a quite brilliant novel about a clandestine love affair.

Now here is the difference between our age and that bygone age. Then this affair was known but only to a small circle of people and they would never have revealed it. Now  should something like that happen it will be difficult to keep it secret. It will soon be on social media, television news and in the printed media.

So, observe how the fact that Lord Alli , a Labour peer, gave clothes and spectacles to the Prime Minister and clothes to his wife emerged like a slow drip. And with no Dowing Street plumber able to fix this leak, or even perhaps want to, more stories emerged of gifts like allowing Starmer to use Alli’s luxury flat during the election. Ali also gave gifts to Angela Raynor, the deputy Prime Minister  who used his flat in New York where she stayed with a friend. Rachel Reeves got clothes which came from a friend of hers. We also learnt that Starmer had had use of a box at Emirates to watch his beloved Arsenal.

Now there is nothing corrupt about all this. Starmer, Raynor, Reeves declared these gifts. But observe the effect of this stories. All three have said they will no longer receive gifts of clothes. But the fact that they accepted these gifts  mean they , seeking to run this country, showed an astonishing political naivete. Starmer has justified it was necessary to use Ali’s flat in order to allow his “boy” to concentrate on his GCSEs and not be distracted by the election. Starmer justified his Arsenal box by saying security reasons meant he could not use his Arsenal season tickets. Reeves said she accepted the clothes because she never has time to go shopping and the friend was helping her out.

However, the working people, the phrase Starmer and Reeves always use, do not have friends who would give them such gifts. By accepting these gifts Starmer, Raynor and Reeves put themselves on a pedestal high above the working people and in a very different class.

The fact is we live in an age, unlike the age of Churchill and Lloyd George, when we expect our politicians to be exactly like us. Starmer and Reeves and the Labour government are constantly telling us hard times are coming. Fasten the seat belts. We need to go through the valleys of deprivation before we see the sunny lands of prosperity. If that is the case then we expect the politicians to fasten their seat belts as well. Not sawn round in luxury while we cut back. That shows there are two worlds one for the politicians and one for us. There may always have been two worlds but in the past our fathers and grandfathers accepted there would be. We don’t. Politicians of our age cannot expect people to make sacrifices when they are not making them as well.

But there is another aspect to this story that is, in some ways, even more worrying. Why did this story of Starmer and his gifts emerge? First we had a story of Lord Ali having a Downing Street pass, something that is unusual and raised questions as to why. Then we started hearing of the gifts that were being given. This was followed by stories of disquiet in Downing Street about how Sue Gray, Starmer’s chief of staff, was earning more than him. That Labour party members who had acted as advisers for MPs when they were in opposition had been offered salaries lower than what their Tory counterparts had got when they worked for Tory ministers. The rewards they expected in helping Labour get to power after fourteen years had not come their way. Instead a select few had profited. All this has bred discontent. Is it any surprise that there are leaks from Downing Street about Starmer and his gifts.

What we have here is a dysfunctional government. When Starmer came to power I felt that while he did not have the charisma of a Blair he would be a good technocrat who would know how to run the government as he had run the CPS one of the biggest organisations in this country. The evidence so far suggests that this assumption may not be right. This is what is most worrying. Starmer is not a word smith. He will never utter a phrase like Blair’s tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime which will resonate. But the expectation has been he would gather competent people round him and give us a government that works. Now it would seem Starmer’s managerial capacity has been exaggerated. I hope I am wrong. But if he cannot manage his Downing Street operation how can he manage the country?

Starmer needs to show quickly that he can be a good manager otherwise it will be difficult to believe that his slogan change means anything.

Biden to convene Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Oct

Biden stated that Ukraine has won the battle of Kyiv and reclaimed more than half of the territory that Russia had seized at the beginning of the war….reports Asian Lite News

President Joe Biden has announced a “surge” in security assistance for Ukraine and a series of additional actions to help Ukraine win its war against Russia. He also announced the decision to convene a leader-level meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany next month.

In a statement released by the White House, Biden stated, “I will convene a leader-level meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany next month to coordinate the efforts of the more than 50 countries supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.”

Biden stated that Ukraine has won the battle of Kyiv and reclaimed more than half of the territory that Russia had seized at the beginning of the war.

In a statement, Biden stated, “I am proud to welcome President Zelenskyy back to the White House today. For nearly three years, the United States has rallied the world to stand with the people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom from Russian aggression, and it has been a top priority of my Administration to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to prevail.”

“In that time, Ukraine has won the battle of Kyiv, reclaimed more than half the territory that Russia seized at the start of the war, and safeguarded its sovereignty and independence. But there is more work to do. That is why, today, I am announcing a surge in security assistance for Ukraine and a series of additional actions to help Ukraine win this war,” he added.

Biden stated that he has directed the US Department of Defence to allocate all of its remaining security assistance funding that has been appropriated for Ukraine by the end of my term in office.

“As part of this effort, the Department of Defense will allocate the remaining Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funds by the end of this year. I also have authorized USD 5.5 billion in Presidential Drawdown Authority to ensure this authority does not expire, so that my Administration can fully utilize the funding appropriated by Congress to support the drawdown of US equipment for Ukraine and then replenish US stockpiles,” Biden said.

In a statement, Biden noted that the US Department of Defence is announcing USD 2.4 billion in security assistance through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which will provide Ukraine with additional air defence, unmanned aerial systems, and air-to-ground munitions, as well as strengthen Ukraine’s defence industrial base and support its maintenance and sustainment requirements.

In order to enhance Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities, Biden said that he has decided to provide Ukraine with the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range munition.

Biden stated that he has directed the US Department of Defence to refurbish and provide Ukraine with an additional Patriot air defence battery and to provide Ukraine with additional Patriot missiles.

He noted, “This builds on my decision earlier this year to divert US air defence exports to Ukraine, which will provide Ukraine with hundreds of additional Patriot and AMRAAM missiles over the next year and will help Ukraine defend its cities and its people.”

He has also asked the US Department of Defence to expand training for Ukrainian F-16 pilots, including by supporting the training of an additional 18 pilots next year.

Furthermore, Biden informed that the US Department of Justice, the Department of the Treasury, and the US Secret Service, in order to counter Russian sanctions evasion and money laundering, have taken action to disrupt a global cryptocurrency network, in coordination with international partners.

Earlier, US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin announced that US has announced security assistance package to help Ukraine meet its battlefield needs.

Taking to X, Austin stated, “Today, we announced another security assistance package to help Ukraine meet its immediate battlefield needs. The U.S. and our coalition of some 50 allies and partners will continue to help Ukraine defend its sovereign territory against Russian aggression–today and for the long haul.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, where he briefed Biden on the current situation on the frontlines and raised the Plan of Victory, which he will discuss it in detail during negotiations in Washington.

During their meeting, Zelenskyy also expressed his gratitude for the US’s support in Ukraine’s defence efforts.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy stated, “I met with President Biden @POTUS on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and expressed my gratitude for the unwavering U.S. support, which is saving lives and helping Ukraine defend its independence. I told President Biden about the situation on the frontlines and raised the Plan of Victory. We agreed to discuss it in detail during negotiations in Washington tomorrow.” (ANI)

    Harris slams Ukraine ‘surrender’ policy

Kamala Harris has criticized her US election rival Donald Trump’s stance on Ukraine, describing it as a policy of “surrender” to Russia as she told President Volodymyr Zelensky that he could rely on her support.

Zelensky also met President Joe Biden to present his “victory plan,” with the White House announcing a fresh military aid package worth nearly $8 billion for Kyiv as it struggles on the battlefield in the third year of Moscow’s invasion.

Zelensky’s visit has been clouded by a blazing row with Republican presidential candidate Trump that underscored how November’s US election could upend the support that Ukraine receives from its biggest backer. Harris did not mention Trump by name but said there were “some in my country who would instead force Ukraine to give up large parts of its sovereign territory, who would demand that Ukraine accept neutrality.”

“These proposals are the same of those of [President Vladimir] Putin. And let us be clear, they are not proposals for peace. Instead, they are proposals for surrender,” she said with Zelensky by her side. During a separate meeting in the Oval Office with Zelensky, Biden pledged that “Russia will not prevail” in the war it launched in February 2022.

“Ukraine will prevail, and we’ll continue to stand by you every step of the way,” Biden said after thanking him for presenting the so-called victory plan. Dressed in his trademark military-style outfit, Zelensky replied, “we deeply appreciate that Ukraine and America have stood side by side.”

Zelensky is looking to shore up support for his war effort as Biden tries to lock in aid for Ukraine, ahead of the white-knuckle US election on November 5.

Biden pledged nearly $8 billion in military aid on Thursday, including $5.5 billion to be authorized before it expires at the end of the US fiscal year on Monday. Biden said in a statement that the “surge in security assistance for Ukraine” would “help Ukraine win this war.”

Biden also announced Washington would provide Ukraine with the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range munition and called a summit of allies in Germany in October. The White House however played down Ukraine’s hopes that Zelensky’s visit would achieve his long-held goal of getting permission to fire long-range Western-made missiles into Russian territory. “I’m not expecting there to be any new announcements on this particular action or a decision coming out of this meeting,” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

Zelensky also visited the US Congress – where his government said he had also presented his victory plan – and gave a defiant address at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. But Zelensky’s visit has prompted fresh nuclear saber-rattling from Moscow, which has repeatedly warned the West against giving Ukraine long-range arms.

  • Baroness Warsi quits Conservatives in Lords

Baroness Warsi quits Conservatives in Lords

Lady Warsi said the party no longer resembled the one she represented in government. She was Britain’s first Muslim cabinet minister….reports Asian Lite News

Former Conservative Party co-chairwoman Baroness Sayeeda Warsi has resigned the party’s whip in the House of Lords, as she said the party is “hypocritical” and moved too far to the right.

Lady Warsi, who served in the cabinet during David Cameron’s premiership, said the party no longer resembled the one she represented in government. She was Britain’s first Muslim cabinet minister.

She claimed that a Conservative Party investigation over alleged “divisive language” was because of her support for a teacher cleared of a racially aggravated public order offence during a pro-Palestine protest in November last year.

Marieha Hussain had been photographed holding a placard with Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman surrounded by coconuts.

Announcing her resignation in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Baroness Warsi said: “It is with a heavy heart that I have today informed my whip and decided for now to no longer take the Conservative whip.

“This is a sad day for me. I am a Conservative and remain so but sadly the current party are far removed from the party I joined and served in Cabinet.

“My decision is a reflection of how far right my party has moved and the hypocrisy and double standards in its treatment of different communities. A timely reminder of the issues that I raise in my book Muslims Don’t Matter.”

She said she was prompted to resign over comments from some in the Conservative Party over the acquittal of Hussain, who was found not guilty of a racially aggravated public order offence on September 13.

She said: “I will not be gagged on a point of principle. And I am not prepared to play games behind closed doors. If Rishi Sunak’s party wants to retry and replay the ‘coconut trial’ despite the acquittal of Marieha Hussain, the clear legal findings and the overwhelming expert witness testimonies then I wish to do so publicly and transparently. It would be unfair to do this whilst continuing to take the Conservatives whip. I realise I have the privilege of platform and I have decided to exercise that privilege by speaking truth to power.”

She added: “A court of law found Marieha Hussain not guilty. Whatever Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman think of that decision, that is the rule of law and they are not above the law. I applaud the court’s decision and judgement of Judge Vanessa Lloyd, the overwhelming evidence of multiple academics and other expert witnesses. It was the right decision and I rightly congratulated Marieha on her acquittal. I was subsequently asked to delete my public support for Marieha – I refused to do so. That is the basis of the complaint. No other comments or language is the basis of the complaint. The case was due to be conducted in private behind closed doors, I was not told who the complainant was and this is material considering the detail of bad faith practice the court heard about during the trial. I was also told I could not discuss the matter with others. It was effectively to be a secret retrial of the ‘Coconut Trial’, I was not prepared to accept this. I felt it appropriate in the circumstances to resign my whip and look forward to dealing with these issues openly and transparently in the coming weeks and months.”

A Conservative Party spokesperson said: “Complaints were received regarding divisive language by Baroness Sayeeda Warsi. Baroness Warsi was informed an investigation was about to begin earlier this week.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that all complaints are investigated without prejudice.”

Shadow housing secretary Kemi Badenoch told the Sun that complaints had been made to party officials about the peer.

Lady Warsi was appointed to the House of Lords in 2007. She first served in government as a Minister without Portfolio from 2010 until 2012. She later became a foreign minister and held a faith and communities brief until 2014.

She resigned in disagreement with the party’s policy on the Israel-Gaza war in August that year.

Lady Warsi later became a critic of the Conservative Party while representing the party in the Lords.

Earlier this year she told current Conservative leadership contender Robert Jenrick to “reflect on your language” after his comments during the riots in August.

Commenting on a social media video in which Mr Jenrick spoke of “sectarian gangs” in some cases “attacking white Britons”, Lady Warsi said: “Use this awful moment to reflect on your language and conduct and what impact it’s had on where the country finds itself.”
