UP govt imposes 6-month ban on protests, strikes

State BJP spokesperson Manish Shukla explained that the ban is part of preparations for major events like the Kumbh Mela and other significant programmes…reports Asian Lite News

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Yogi Adityanath, has imposed a six-month ban on strikes and protests within its departments, corporations, and local authorities. This decision, outlined in an official statement, comes under the Uttar Pradesh Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).

State BJP spokesperson Manish Shukla explained that the ban is part of preparations for major events like the Kumbh Mela and other significant programmes. The objective is to ensure that essential services remain uninterrupted for residents and visiting pilgrims during these events.

The Samajwadi Party (SP), the state’s main opposition party, has condemned the move as “undemocratic”. SP MLC Ashutosh Sinha told news agency PTI that the decision violates the constitutional rights of citizens and government workers to express their opinions.

“People and government employees have a right to express their views as per the provisions of the Constitution. But it seems that the government does not want people to do so,” Sinha said.

Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have been at the forefront of protests against new agricultural laws that they argue favour large corporations at the expense of small farmers.

On December 2, The Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP), along with other farmer groups such as the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), marched towards Delhi from western Uttar Pradesh, gathering at the Delhi-Noida border. This protest was part of a larger movement that began on November 25, with farmers rallying against authorities like the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority and the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority.

The protestors are demanding a 10 per cent allocation of plots and a 64.7 per cent increase in compensation under the previous land acquisition law, equating to four times the market rate. For land acquired after January 1, 2014, they seek 20 per cent of the plots. Additional demands include employment and rehabilitation benefits for landless farmers’ children, enforcement of High Power Committee directives, and adequate arrangements for resettling affected areas.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has extended the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sisters Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and party leader Salman Akram Raja until January 18 in a protest case, Ary News reported.

According to Ary News, the case refers to a violent clash that took place between PTI workers and police on October 5. The court also granted an extension in the interim bail of Ali Imtiaz Warraich and others.

It was reported that the PTI leaders had filed bail applications in four different cases. The extension of their interim bail provides them with temporary relief as they face charges related to the protest.

On the other hand, former PM Imran Khan has warned the government of launching a civil disobedience movement if his demands are not met.

As per Ary News, addressing media persons outside jail, Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan said that former prime minister, who is currently incarcerated, has announced two key demands namely the release of “political prisoners” facing trial and the composition of a judicial commission to probe the events of May 9, 2023, and the November 26 crackdown on PTI protesters.

Speaking to journalists outside Adiala Jail, Aleema Khan disclosed that Imran Khan hinted at having “one final card up his sleeve” but chose not to reveal further details, Ary News reported.

Addressing rumors about the former Prime Minister’s health, Aleema dismissed them as baseless. She shared that Imran Khan laughed upon hearing the fake reports and assured everyone of his good health, adding that he maintains his fitness through regular exercise.

Incarcerated former Pakistan PM Imran Khan, has been in the Adiala Jail since August 2023 on multiple charges.

Protests have erupted acrosss the country following Imran Khan’s arrest, as his supporters and party workers took to the streets to demand his release.

Meanwhile, The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) several top leaders in connection with the General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case, ARY News reported.

ATC Rawalpindi Judge Amjad Ali Shah signed the warrants, ordering the Rawalpindi Police (CPO) to arrest them and present them before court by December 10. The court’s decision showcases efforts to hold the accused accountable for their alleged involvement in the GHQ attack case.

On December 5, Judge Amjad Ali Shah indicted PTI founder Imran Khan and 60 other PTI leaders were indicted in the GHQ attack case, ARY News reported.

After the decision announced by the ATC, the police arrested four PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub, Raja Basharat, and Malik Ahmad Chatta, in connection with the GHQ attack case. 23 other accused in the case, including Zulfi Bukhari, Murad Saeed and Shehbaz Gill, have been declared proclaimed offenders.

On May 9 last year, Khan, who served as Pakistan’s PM from 2018 to 2022, was arrested from the premises of the Islamabad High Court, where he was present for a hearing in a corruption case. He was accused of receiving illegal gifts and assets from other nations.

US Lawmakers criticise loopholes in new export control rules

The lawmakers pointed out that, despite BIS’s efforts, the newly introduced controls may still fail to fully curb China’s ability to access crucial technologies. …reports Asian Lite News

Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the United States House Select Committee on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) have raised concerns over the US Department of Commerce’s recent export control rule, issued on December 2, 2024, aimed at limiting China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology.

In a letter to Secretary Gina Raimondo, the lawmakers praised certain aspects of the Bureau of Industry and Security’s (BIS) rule, such as the inclusion of some of Huawei’s semiconductor facilities on the Entity List and the new controls on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) technology, which could hinder China’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

However, they expressed disappointment over what they described as critical loopholes in the rule that continue to allow Chinese entities to access US technology.

The lawmakers pointed out that, despite BIS’s efforts, the newly introduced controls may still fail to fully curb China’s ability to access crucial technologies.

Specifically, they criticised the introduction of the “License Exception Restricted Fabrication Facility,” a list-based approach which they argued would be ineffective in protecting US national security. They also questioned the rationale behind BIS’s differing licensing policies for Chinese semiconductor firms like Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), noting that some of these companies had been given carve-outs for continued access to certain US technologies.

The letter specifically highlighted that SMIC’s facilities in Beijing were subject to a “presumption of denial,” but other SMIC locations, such as in Shanghai and Shenzhen, received special exemptions or different licensing policies.

The lawmakers also raised concerns over Huawei subsidiaries such as SwaySure Technology and Shenzhen Pengxinxu Technology, which were reportedly granted similar carve-outs, undermining the effectiveness of the new export controls.

Further criticism was directed at BIS’s failure to address the use of methods like “wafer bridges,” which allow Chinese semiconductor firms to circumvent restrictions by connecting blacklisted facilities with those under less stringent controls.

A recent report revealed that SMIC had used such a “wafer bridge” to transfer sensitive U.S. technology between facilities, bypassing BIS’s regulations. The lawmakers called for stronger counter-diversion measures to prevent the use of such tactics, arguing that the current loopholes pose a significant threat to US national security.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the apparent influence of industry interests on BIS’s decision-making and urged Secretary Raimondo to close the existing loopholes before her term ends. In addition, they requested that the Department of Commerce preserve all documents and communications related to the latest export control update so that any further weaknesses in the rule can be identified and addressed during the transition process.

The letter underscores ongoing scrutiny of the US government’s export control policies toward China, especially amid escalating tensions between the two countries over technology, trade, and national security. Lawmakers continue to push for stronger enforcement of export restrictions to prevent China from gaining access to sensitive technologies that could bolster its military and technological capabilities. Musk, Vivek bring Trump’s DOGE to Washington

Trump tapped the two business titans to head his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) assigned to find ways to fire federal workers, cut programs and slash federal regulations…reports Asian Lite News

Billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy spent several hours Thursday swapping ideas with lawmakers about President-elect Donald Trump’s DOGE initiative to dismantle parts of the federal government.

Meeting behind closed doors at the Capitol, Musk told the mostly Republican lawmakers they would be keeping a “naughty and nice” list of those who join in the budget slashing proposals and those who don’t, according to lawmakers who attended.

“We’re going to see a lot of change around here in Washington,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, as Musk, with his young son on his shoulders, breezed by and into the private meeting.

Trump tapped the two business titans to head his Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, a nongovernmental task force assigned to find ways to fire federal workers, cut programs and slash federal regulations — all part of what he calls his “Save America” agenda for a second term in the White House.

Washington has seen this before, with ambitious efforts to reduce the size and scope of the federal government that historically have run into resistance when the public is confronted with cuts to trusted programs that millions of Americans depend on for jobs, health care, military security and everyday needs.

But this time Trump is staffing his administration with battle-tested architects of sweeping proposals, some outlined in Project 2025, to severely reduce and reshape the government. Musk and Ramaswamy have said they plan to work alongside the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, headed by Trump’s nominee Russ Vought, a mastermind of past cuts.

“DOGE has a historic opportunity for structural reductions in the federal government,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal. “We are prepared for the onslaught.”

Trump said Thursday that he would also name venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar” and lead the Presidential Council of Advisers for Science and Technology. Trump said in a social media post that Sacks would help “steer us away from Big Tech bias and censorship.” Trump’s transition team didn’t say whether Sacks would be a government employee or a temporary government worker who would not be bound by the same ethics and disclosure rules.

Sacks visited Mar-a-Lago earlier Thursday, according to an investor who held an event at Trump’s Florida club. The longtime conservative was key to introducing Vice President-elect JD Vance to donors, helping him prove he could raise money. Sacks hosted a fundraiser for Trump and Vance at his San Francisco home.

Musk and Ramaswamy faced a first test as they sat on a auditorium stage in the Capitol basement, as House and Senate lawmakers, almost exclusively Republicans, lined up at the microphones to share ideas for ways to address the nation’s budget imbalances.

Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., the chair of the Education and Workforce Committee, brought up the Department of Education as a good place to cut. Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wisconsin, said to look at office space and how little of it is being used. Others talked about the need for workers to return to their offices.

Afterward, Johnson declined to say if Medicare, Social Security or other popular programs were off limits for cuts, describing this first meeting as a “brainstorming” session with more to come.

“They said everything has to be looked at,” said Rep. Aaron Bean, R-Fla., who joined with Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, in launching what they are calling the DOGE caucus in the House, with more than 50 Republicans and two Democratic members.

Musk and Ramaswamy appeared to be taking it all in, Musk at times even taking notes, lawmakers said — experiencing a day in the life of congressional leadership, as the meeting went on and on, with lawmakers lined up 20-deep for their chance to speak.

“It was just what I’d hoped for, where it was a question and answer session, so that members could come up, express their ideas, concerns, ask questions,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who will chair a House Oversight subcommittee in the new year on DOGE.

To be sure, it wasn’t the full Congress participating, as most Democrats did not join.

New York Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi said when he heard Musk mention that he was open to hearing from Democrats, he dashed over to join toward the end of the session.

“Let’s do some things to try and make government more efficient — without hurting people,” Suozzi said.

Musk and Ramaswamy left lawmakers with the impression they would be back for more, holding regular meetings and starting a podcast or some other way to share information with Americans to gauge public support — or opposition — to the proposals.

While neither Musk nor Ramaswamy have much public service experience, they bring track records in private business — Musk’s operations have vast government contracts — and enthusiasm for Trump’s agenda, having campaigned alongside him in the final stretch of the election.

The world’s richest man, Musk poured millions into a get-out-the-vote effort to help the former president return to the White House. He is known politically for having transformed the popular social media site formerly known as Twitter into X, a platform embraced by Trump’s “Make America Great Again” enthusiasts.

Despite its name, the Department of Government Efficiency is neither a department nor part of the government, which frees Musk and Ramaswamy from having to go through the typical ethics and background checks required for federal employment. They said they will not be paid for their work.

Tagore said that such behaviour not only “tarnishes” the Parliament’s image, but also insults the dignity of a high constitutional office. …reports Asian Lite News

Congress MP Manickam Tagore wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday demanding stringent action against Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sambit Patra for allegedly using “slanderous language” against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

Tagore further said that such behaviour not only “tarnishes” the Parliament’s image, but also insults the dignity of a high constitutional office.

“I am writing to express deep concern over the highly inappropriate and disrespectful behavior exhibited by MP Sambit Patra during a recent media interaction in New Delhi on December 5. During this interaction, Sambit Patra used highly slanderous language against the Leader of Opposition (Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi,” the letter addressed to Om Birla stated.

“Such behavior not only tarnishes the image of the esteemed Parliament but also insults the dignity of a high constitutional office. As a custodian of the Parliament, I urge you to take immediate and stringent action against Sambit Patra. His conduct is a clear violation of the decorum and ethics expected of a member of the Parliament of India,” he added.

The Congress leader further affirmed hope that he will take appropriate steps to uphold the “dignity and integrity” of the parliamentary system.

“I trust that you will address this matter with the seriousness it deserves and take appropriate steps to uphold the dignity and integrity of our parliamentary system. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter,” he further said.

Earlier BJP MP Sambit Patra on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, calling him the “traitor of the highest order.”

Patra alleged that Gandhi is part of a “triangle” along with billionaire George Soros and the news portal Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) aimed at destabilising India.

“We are going to talk about this dangerous triangle which is trying to destabilise India. In this triangle, on one side it is George Soros from America, some agencies of America, another side of triangle is a big news portal named OCCRP…the last and the most important side of the triangle is Rahul Gandhi, ‘traitor of the highest order’. I am not scared to say this word…I don’t have any hesitation to call LoP Lok Sabha, a traitor,” Patra said at a press conference today.

The BJP MP from Puri also accused the Lok Sabha LoP of “betraying” the country alleging that he follows the directives of the OCCRP.

“OCCRP is a global media agency, crores of people read what they publish…Open Society Foundation is a big funder of this agency…it is George Soros’s foundation…such agencies work for the interest of the people who fund them…LoP Rahul Gandhi betraying the whole country…OCCRP dictates and Rahul Gandhi follows,” he added. Sullivan says US would run out of munition in China war

Jake Sullivan appealed to the incoming administration of Donald Trump to sustain the ramp-up of the domestic defense industry spurred by the war in Ukraine. ..reports Asian Lite News

President Joe Biden’s national security adviser warned Wednesday that the United States could quickly run out of munitions in a war with China as he called for more sustained defense production.

Jake Sullivan appealed to the incoming administration of Donald Trump to sustain the ramp-up of the domestic defense industry spurred by the war in Ukraine.

“God forbid we end up in a full-scale war with the PRC,” Sullivan said, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

“But any war with a country like the PRC, a military like the PRC, is going to involve the exhaustion of munition stockpiles very rapidly,” he said at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“A big part of the answer to a healthy defense industrial base over time is the ability to regenerate, to surge, to build during a conflict — not just to build before, or to prepare for a conflict,” he said.

Sullivan called for Congress and the Trump administration to keep working on a Biden proposal to create a revolving fund of munitions.

The fund, which was proposed at $500 million a year, would let the Pentagon procure critical munitions even as they run out due to wars such as Ukraine.

Sullivan acknowledged there would be debate in the next administration on the size of the defense budget but said it was critical to keep up efforts to boost a military-industrial base which atrophied after the end of the Cold War when then United States saw no close competitor.

“First and most fundamentally, we’ve got to keep ramping up and accelerating production and procurement of the things that we need most,” he said.

He pointed to efforts to build 155-millimeter artillery rounds for Ukraine.

He said that the United States will produce 55,000 such rounds per month by the time the Biden administration leaves office next month, a 400 percent increase from before, with a goal of reaching 100,000 per month by early 2026.

Sullivan also pointed to the need to counter cooperation among US adversaries — China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.

Trump’s team has made clear it is unenthusiastic about the billions of dollars in US weapons for Ukraine and has spoken of forcing a quick settlement with Russia.

Trump’s advisers, notably Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, have said that US resources would be better spent countering China.

Trump nominates Isaacman as NASA administrator

The 41-year-old, whose call sign is ‘Rook’, has reserved two more flights with SpaceX, including a trip to lead Starship’s first crew around the Earth’s orbit …reports Asian Lite News

Jared Isaacman, a billionaire astronaut who led the first private spacewalk during a SpaceX mission in September, has been tapped by US President-elect Donald Trump to lead Nasa, the country’s top space agency. From being a high school dropout to a businessman and now a billionaire spacewalker, the 41-year-old brings with him a unique blend of business acumen, astronautical experience and a strong vision for the future of space exploration.

Isaacman, who will replace current administrator and former Florida Democratic senator Bill Nelson, is well-known in the space community for his involvement in private astronaut missions. A business aide of Musk, Isaacman commanded and funded two significant SpaceX commercial flights. He led the first all-civilian mission on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in September 2021.

Three years later, he commanded another mission on Crew Dragon, which set several records, including the highest altitude achieved on a crewed mission since Apollo 17 in 1972 and the first private spacewalk. Isaacman funded this mission for an undisclosed amount with SpaceX, UK-based The Independent reported.

During the successful mission in September, crew members raised money for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Isaacman, a Jewish, was born in New Jersey on February 11, 1983, and dropped out of high school at 16. He got his General Educational Development (GED), which is equivalent to a high school diploma, and began working in his parents’ basement, according to The Independent. He is based in eastern Pennsylvania with his wife and their two daughters.

Isaacman is the chief executive and founder of Shift4, a payment services company and has also flown fighter jets. He is also the founder of Florida-based Draken International, which leases fighter jets that previously flew with the military before selling the company in 2019.

The 41-year-old, whose call sign is ‘Rook’, has reserved two more flights with SpaceX, including a trip to lead Starship’s first crew around the Earth’s orbit.

While tapping Isaacman, Trump emphasised the billionaire astronaut’s passion for space, astronaut experience and dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration as reasons for his selection.

Isaacman has expressed a vision for Nasa that aligns with the advancement of a new commercial space era. He believes that space holds “unparalleled potential for breakthroughs in manufacturing, biotechnology, mining, and perhaps even pathways to new sources of energy”.

He aims to lead Nasa in “passionately pursuing” these possibilities and in ushering in an era where humanity becomes a true spacefaring civilisation.

Isaacman is expected to deepen the agency’s strategy of depending on private companies for accessing space as a commercial service. This has posed an existential threat to Nasa’s Space Launch System rocket, a massive, over-budget launch vehicle built by Boeing and Northrop Grumman and a crucial element of its Artemis programme alongside Starship.

If confirmed by the Senate, Isaacman, who has no government or political experience, would oversee Nasa’s roughly USD 25 billion budget. The space agency’s top priority has been returning humans to the moon under its Artemis programme, an effort promoted by Trump during his first term that will lean heavily on SpaceX’s Starship.

    Atkins to head SEC

Trump has announced that he has nominated Paul Atkins, a former commissioner of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), to be the agency’s chairman. Atkins, the CEO, and founder of Patomak Global Partners, a risk management consultancy, served as an SEC commissioner from 2002-2008 under President George W. Bush.

The SEC has five commissioners, one of whom is designated as chairman by the President. The President nominates all five commissioners, and their appointments must be approved by the Senate.

Founded in 1934 at the height of the Great Depression, the SEC’s mission is to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation.

“Paul is a proven leader for common sense regulations. He believes in the promise of robust, innovative capital markets that are responsive to the needs of Investors, & that provide capital to make our Economy the best in the World,” Trump said on Wednesday in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

“He also recognises that digital assets & other innovations are crucial to Making America Greater than Ever Before,” Trump noted.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Trump nominated Jared Isaacman, CEO of Shift4 who has led two private spaceflights, as the next administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Daniel P. Driscoll, a US Army veteran and venture capitalist, to serve as the secretary of the Army. Both positions would need Senate approval.

Trump also picked his ex-aide Peter Navarro to serve as senior counselor for trade and manufacturing in his next administration and appointed David A. Warrington to serve as Assistant to the President and Counsel to the President.

Sunak, Akshata plan new UK office to make positive contributions

While the couple are still deciding on the focus of the new initiative, both are said to be passionate about education and likely to incorporate that among its goals. …reports Asian Lite News

Former prime minister Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, are believed to be in talks to set up a new private office in the new year to make a positive contribution to Britain, according to a media report on Wednesday.

‘The Times’ newspaper reports that Sunak and Murty, both 44 and with a combined estimated fortune of around GBP 500 million, are to fund the so-called “Office of Akshata Murty and Rishi Sunak” themselves.

While the couple are still deciding on the focus of the new initiative, both are said to be passionate about education and likely to incorporate that among its goals.

“Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, are in talks about setting up an office next year to pursue initiatives that they believe will make a positive contribution to Britain,” claims the newspaper report.

“The former prime minister has elected not to take the GBP 1,15,000 a year allowance to which he is entitled after leaving No. 10 [Downing Street]. They are being supported by Coulson Partners, a PR firm set up by Andy Coulson, a former No. 10 adviser and newspaper editor,” it adds.

Sunak, who stepped down as Conservative Party leader in the wake of a bruising electoral defeat in July, is now a backbench member of Parliament for Richmond and Northallerton in Yorkshire.

Back in October, he addressed his final Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons to make way for his successor – Kemi Badenoch.

Alluding to some media speculation around his family’s relocation plans to California, Sunak had stated that he will be spending more time in his constituency while continuing to raise issues of concern from the backbenches.

“I am happy to confirm reports that I will now be spending more time in the greatest place on earth, where the scenery is indeed worthy of a movie set and everybody is a character – that’s right, if anyone needs me, I will be in Yorkshire,” he said, amid laughter from his parliamentary colleagues.

Last month, Britain’s first prime minister of Indian heritage received a rockstar welcome at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s annual Diwali gala in London – where he joined Akshata and her mother Sudha Murty as the guest of honour.

During her time at 10 Downing Street, Akshata Murty – daughter of Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy – held a regular “Lessons at 10” programme to provide children from across the UK an opportunity to see behind the scenes of the famous black door – the office and residence of the PM in London.

“I know the phenomenal work that goes into running a business. My mother’s endeavours in science, technology, engineering and maths allowed her to push boundaries both academically and professionally and gave her a ringside seat to the technological revolution,” she said during a special International Women’s Day edition of “Lessons at 10” in March.

The couple’s shared interest in technology is among the areas expected to influence the focus of any new private office next year.

PM refuses to give further details of Haigh’s resignation

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch asked why the prime minister had appointed a “convicted fraudster” as his transport secretary…reports Asian Lite News

Keir Starmer has refused to give more information about why Louise Haigh resigned as transport secretary last week. Haigh stepped down after it emerged she had pleaded guilty to a fraud offence a decade ago, a conviction she reportedly told Sir Keir about in 2020, when he appointed her to his shadow cabinet.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch asked why the prime minister had appointed a “convicted fraudster” as his transport secretary. Starmer said Haigh had been right to resign “when new information came to light”.

But, when asked by Badenoch for details about the new information, he replied: “I’m not going to disclose private information.”

He added that Haigh’s swift resignation was a “marked contrast” to the behaviour of the previous Conservative government and accused Badenoch of being “obsessed with the Westminster issues”. Badenoch said the prime minister was “obfuscating” and that he owed MPs “an explanation”. “The country needs conviction politicians not politicians with convictions,” she said.

Hitting back, Starmer said two of Badenoch’s predecessors had “convictions”, a reference to Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak, who both received fixed penalty notices for breaking Covid rules. Fixed penalty notices are not classed as criminal convictions, provided the fine is paid on time.

Later, responding to Badenoch’s questions, a Labour source said: “If the Conservatives want to have a row about the extent of their criminality in office, that’s fine by us. “The fact is that her two predecessors were found guilty of breaking the law, partying in Downing Street while telling everyone else to follow the rules, something which the leader of the opposition described just a few weeks ago as ‘overblown’. Maybe she’ll want to retract that statement.”

Last week, Haigh became the first minister to resign since the Labour government took office in July. On Thursday evening, Sky News and The Times revealed details of her past conviction. Haigh subsequently issued a statement giving further details of the incident, which took place in 2013 when she was working for insurance company Aviva.

She said she had reported a mugging to the police and that a work mobile phone was one of the items that had been stolen. She later said she found the handset in a drawer at home. Turning on the phone “triggered police attention”, she said, and the matter was taken to magistrates’ court for making a false report to police.

Haigh said: “Under the advice of my solicitor I pleaded guilty – despite the fact this was a genuine mistake from which I did not make any gain.” She received a conditional discharge six months before becoming an MP in the 2015 general election.

Early on Friday, the morning after the details of the conviction emerged, Haigh sent a resignation letter to the prime minister, saying she did not want to become a distraction.
