Kohli better than Dhoni as Test captain

Kohli is more successful, having led the side to 36 wins as against Dhoni who led them to 27 wins…reports Asian Lite News

Virat Kohli is a more successful Test captain than Mahendra Singh Dhoni after captaining India in 60 Tests, although he still needs to match former India wicketkeeper-batsman’s achievements as a leader in limited-overs cricket.

A couple of days before the India team departs for England for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand (from June 18 to 22) as well as five Test matches against England, Kohli stands alongside Dhoni as the person to have captained India in most number of Test matches. Both have led India in 60 Test matches.

However,Kohli is more successful, having led the side to 36 wins as against Dhoni who led them to 27 wins.

The India No. 3 batsman’s record as captain outside Asia was garnished with the 2018-19 Test series win in Australia, an achievement that gave confidence to the Indian team under Ajinkya Rahane to repeat the feat in 2020-21.

He has won four Tests in the West Indies (out of six), one in South Africa (out of three), two in Australia (out of seven) and one in England (out of five). He has lost both Tests in New Zealand.

In comparison, Dhoni has led India to one Test win each in New Zealand, South Africa, England and South Africa. Worse, he was at the helm when India were blanked 0-4 in Test series in England in 2011 and in Australia in 2011-12.

However, when it comes to limited-overs cricket, Dhoni remains unmatchable. He has won all the major trophies as India limited-overs captain — 50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup as well as Champions Trophy. He has also led Chennai Super Kings to IPL as well as Champions League T20 titles.

No wonder, former England captain Michael Vaughan has called Dhoni better than Kohli across formats, though he felt Kohli is better as leader in Test cricket.

Asked in an interview on crictracker.com about who is a better captain, Vaughan said, “MS Dhoni. He’s the trailblazer in the white-ball game. He’s the best ever T20 captain by a good distance. What he brought to the Indian team was fantastic. Virat is the better Test captain, but across formats, it’s Dhoni.”

Kohli has captained India in 95 matches, winning 65 matches and losing 27 with one tie and two no result. He has led India in 45 T20Is, winning 27, and losing 14, tying and drawing two each.

Last week, Delhi Police had announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh for information on the celebrated wrestler who was absconding since May 4.

On May 4, two groups of wrestlers clashed with each other at Chhatrasal Stadium leading to the death of 23-year-old Dhankar due to injuries he sustained during the brawl.

Delhi Police issued a lookout notice for Kumar.

Kumar, employed with the Indian Railways, is posted as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Chhattrasal Stadium, where the brawl allegedly took place.

No decision yet on Pfizer offer to vaccinate athletes

Now, the vaccines are only being given to people aged 38 or older in UK with younger people only getting inoculated if they have an underlying health condition…reports Asian Lite News.

The UK government is yet to make a decision on whether to accept an offer from Pfizer to speed up Olympic and Paralympic athletes for coronavirus vaccines, according to reports.

The UK Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston, according to reports, said it is sensitive because the philosophy has been based on age and that’s been proved to be the right thing. He said “age is the biggest factor and of course Pfizer have offered for the Olympics and we’ve asked them about that.”

Now, the vaccines are only being given to people aged 38 or older in UK with younger people only getting inoculated if they have an underlying health condition.

Earlier this month, Pfizer said that it would donate doses to inoculate athletes and officials preparing for the Tokyo games with the rescheduled Olympics due to open on July 23.

Meanwhile, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) chief Andrew Parsons on Sunday exuded confidence in Tokyo’s ability to host the Paralympic Games and Beijing’s commitment to the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games.

IOC president (ANI)

Marking the 100-day countdown to the Paralympic Games, Parsons said: “It’s a nice coincidence that the 100 days to go (for Tokyo) is the same day as the National Disability Day in China. I think, what we experienced at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was exactly what we want to translate to the whole world, to change the view of societies towards persons with disability and change the mindset.”

Parsons emphasised the importance of hosting the Games amid the pandemic, calling Tokyo “the most important edition of the Paralympic Games in the history of the Paralympic movement”, reports Xinhua

“Persons with disability have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. And this has highlighted the inequality around the world in how societies treat persons with disability,” said Parsons.

“The Paralympic Games is the only global event where we celebrate disability and persons with disability. I would like to reassure the Paralympic athletes of the world that we are doing our utmost to provide the best infrastructure and the best possible Games. So, we want them to focus on their preparations and understand that everything will be very similar to what they are used to.”

Medvedev pips Nadal in ATP rankings

Besides, Nadal can even enter an ATP 250s tournament in either Geneva or Lyon next week….reports Asian Lite News

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has pushed Spain’s Rafael Nadal to No. 3 in ATP rankings, putting the tennis great in danger of not getting a top-2 seeding at the French Open, which is barely three weeks away.

If the Russian — who spent 10 days in bed recovering from Covid-19 before the Madrid Open — holds on to the No. 2 ranking until the seedings are made in two weeks’ time, Nadal would be the No. 3 seed in Paris and potentially on the same half of the draw as No. 1 Novak Djokovic, according to tennis.com.

However, Nadal has a good chance of wresting back the No. 2 position from Medvedev in the coming two weeks as another Masters 1000 tournament — the Italian Open — has kicked off in Rome, where the Spaniard is a nine-time champion and slated to play.

Besides, Nadal can even enter an ATP 250s tournament in either Geneva or Lyon next week.

It was a forgettable past week for both Medvedev and Nadal. They lost before the semi-final stage of the Madrid Open.

While the Russian lost in the third round to Cristian Garin, Nadal was beaten in the quarter-finals by the eventual winner, Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

England players to skip rest of IPL

Even as the Indian cricket board hopes to complete remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL), possibly at an overseas destination, the English board has put its foot down in favour of international cricket, ruling out the possibility of English cricketers playing in the league.

“We’re planning on the involvement of England players in England matches. We’ve got a full FTP schedule. So if those tours to Pakistan and Bangladesh [in September and October] are going ahead, I’d expect the players to be there,” England men’s director of cricket Ashley Giles told British media here.

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a window in September — between the home series against India and the T20 World Cup – or after the T20 World Cup ends in November, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wishes to follow the tight schedule as laid out in the Future Tours Programme (FTP).

England play New Zealand in two Tests on June 2-14 in a series that was hastily arranged and Giles said the IPL players were allowed to skip the Test series as an exception since their IPL contracts were already formalised.

“The New Zealand scenario was very different. Those Test matches were formalised at the end of January, by which time all those contracts and NOCs [no objection certificates] were signed for full involvement in the IPL,” he said further.

“None of us knows what a rearranged IPL looks like at the moment; where it’s going to be or when. But from when we start this summer against New Zealand, our programme is incredibly busy. We’ve got a lot of important, high-profile cricket including the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. And we’re going to have to look after our players.”

England are expected to tour Bangladesh in September immediately after hosing India in a five-Test series and then they travel to Pakistan in mid-October.

They play the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in October-November, after that and then travel to Australia for Ashes that begins on December 8.

They then have a limited overs series in West Indies just after Ashes in January and they follow it up with a limited-overs series which means they are tied up till the next IPL.

Vaughan asks if elephant has English passport

Vaughan has voiced concerns about England’s batting lineup going into the Ashes…reports Asian Lite News

Former England captain Michael Vaughan took a funny swipe at the team’s batting lineup by asking if an Indian elephant has an English passport. Vaughan was reacting to a video of an elephant hitting the ball with a bat when it is thrown towards it.

“Surely the Elephant has an English passport !!,” tweeted Vaughan.

Vaughan has expressed concerns about England’s batting lineup going into the Ashes. “I don’t see that many partnerships in the England batting lineup. This summer they have to find those combinations and partnerships because you can’t win in Australia without making big runs,” said Vaughan on Fox Cricket.

“They get 250-300 at the moment against the better teams with better bowling units. Sometimes a little bit less than that. That won’t win them the Ashes. They have to work out how they are going to 400-450,” he further said.

Brisbane’s bid received a shot in the arm recently when Scott Morrison said that the Federal Government would cover half the costs for the Games….reports Asian Lite News

Brisbane is on verge of securing 2032 Olympic Games after Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) chief John Coates said that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is ‘conducting due diligence ahead of confirming the city as host’ of the quadrennial event.

Speaking to AOC members during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, Coates said that confirmation of funding by the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s support had helped submit the ‘priority guarantees to IOC President Thomas Bach’.

“IOC is now evaluating the project,” Coates was quoted as saying by sports website insidethegames.biz.

Bayern claim Bundesliga title

Bayern, who host Borussia Moenchengladbach later, top the table by seven points from second-placed Leipzig with only two games left for Leipzig…reports Asian Lite News

Bayern Munich were confirmed as German champions for the 31st time on Saturday and extended their record run of consecutive Bundesliga titles to nine after RB Leipzig lost 3-2 at Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern, who host Borussia Moenchengladbach later, top the table by seven points from second-placed Leipzig with only two games left for Leipzig, reports DPA.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick, leaving at the end of the campaign after winning seven trophies, said, “Of course we have celebrated a little. It has been great to coach this team for two seasons. We have a team with enormous quality.”

Jadon Sancho scored twice, including a late winner which not only sealed the title for rivals Bayern but also boosted Dortmund’s Champions League hopes as they moved up to fourth – two points ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt who host Mainz on Sunday.

Third-placed Wolfsburg look well set to achieve their European dream after a 3-0 win over Union Berlin. Werder Bremen, who had lost seven straight in the league, drew 0-0 with sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim beat relegated Schalke 4-2 having been 2-0 down.

A well-worked move put Dortmund ahead early with Thorgan Hazard’s flick releasing Marco Reus who finished with aplomb.

Dortmund, without the injured Erling Haaland, thought they should have had a penalty for Kevin Kampl’s handball just before the break but appeals were waved away.

Sancho then made it 2-0 early in the second period when he fired home amid lax Leipzig defending.

Lukas Klostermann headed in a corner to reduce the deficit and out of nowhere it was suddenly 2-2 on 77 minutes through Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.

But Sancho was on fire and won it for Dortmund after another superb move on 87 minutes.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich defender David Alaba sees his departure from the club at the end of the season as a chance to “do something new” and “take another step forward”. The Austrian could move to Real Madrid at the end of the season.

“To grow, you have to leave your ‘comfort zone’. I think that perhaps you have to go into the unknown to be able to mature again,” he told club magazine 51 in an interview published online on Thursday.

The Austrian Alaba is leaving Bayern after 13 years at the club. He joined the Bavarians youth academy as a “little rascal with big dreams” at 16 and will leave as a two-time treble winner.
