Dubai to stockpile water for 90 days for emergencies

The full scale of the ASR project can store up to 6,000 million imperial gallons of water once completed by 2025 as a strategic reserve…reports Asian Lite News

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has completed the construction of the first stage of the Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project for desalinated water and has started the operations and testing stage.

The full scale of the ASR project can store up to 6,000 million imperial gallons of water once completed by 2025 as a strategic reserve. This makes it the largest ASR of its kind in the world to store potable water and retrieve it in case of an emergency. This will secure the Emirate with an additional source of potable water strategic reserve of 50MIGD for 90 days in emergencies, while ensuring the quality of the stored water.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said that the new project supports DEWA’s efforts to increase the storage capacity of Dubai to reach 7212 MIG in 2025 when compared to the present storage capacity of 822 MIG.

“We support the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to provide a state-of-the-art, integrated, and resilient infrastructure of electricity and water in Dubai according to the highest standards of availability, reliability, efficiency and safety. This helps to ensure meeting the rapidly growing demand for water across different areas in Dubai for all citizens, residents and visitors. Besides the ASR project, DEWA is working on a 120 MIG reservoir in Al Nakhali and another 60 MIG reservoir in Al Lusaily,” added Al Tayer.

The ASR project increases the sustainable production of water in Dubai. It uses clean solar power to desalinate seawater using the latest Reverse Osmosis (RO) technologies. Excess water is stored in aquifers and pumped back into the water network when needed. The cost of this innovative integrated model is less than the cost of traditional reservoirs, and is a sustainable, eco-friendly, economical solution. It also emphasises Dubai’s ability to anticipate and shape the future.

The production capacity of desalinated water of DEWA is currently 490 MIGD, including 63MIGD using Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology. By 2030, SWRO will help expand its production capacity to 303 MIGD, increasing it to 730 MIGD of desalinated water by 2030.

Three luxury yachts debuted this weekend at Dubai Harbour as part of the ongoing Dubai International Boat Show 2022 as the world’s leading brands and exhibitors raced to present their nautical handiwork to this year’s crowds at the Middle East’s largest and most-popular leisure marine event.

The 28th edition of the five-day event, which finishes on Sunday, saw De Antonio Yachts, a Barcelona-based boat manufacturer, and EVO Yachts, a brand from Blu Emme Yachts, reveal their latest vessels to the public for the first time at Dubai Harbour, the Middle East’s largest marina.

EVO Yachts, following the recent partnership announcement with regional dealer EVO Yachts Dubai, debuted its EVO R4 unit with unique interiors over the weekend. ‘Like something from a Transformers movie’, the Evo R4 is the newest version of the extensible yacht Evo 43, a fast 13m day-cruiser with sleek, sculpted contours and two Volvo IPS 650 engines.

Speaking from the show, Marcus Giltay, Managing Director, EVO Yachts Dubai, said, “The quality of visitors to our stand has been excellent and as of now we already have three to four potential buyers, which is fantastic. Dubai is the perfect platform to launch our boats as the clientele here love technology and gadgets, but also super high quality, which describes our vessels to a tee.”

Since its launch, EVO 43’s revolutionary ‘XTension’ bulwarks have sparked wide attention, opening hydraulically in less than 30 seconds to increase usable deck space by 40% and turn the cockpit into a 25sqm terrace.

Meanwhile, De Antonio Yachts launched its D50 Open, a 50ft yacht with two, three, or four hidden outboard engines and built on the award-winning D46 Open hull. With a top speed of 50 knots and a maximum power of 1800hp, the exclusive yacht provides what De Antonio Yachts claims to be unrivalled navigation efficiency.

Elsewhere, De Antonio Yachts’ D46 Cruiser, another nautical marvel, was also launched this weekend and is aimed at the most sophisticated and demanding shipowners. 4 UAE residents to row across Atlantic Ocean

The team will also be running a schools and university programme designed to inspire future generations to embrace challenges, follow their hearts and chase their dreams…reports Asian Lite News

Arabian Ocean Rowing Team has launched its historic bid to become the first UAE team to row unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean from La Gomera, off the coast of Africa, to English Harbour in Antigua.

The launch took place on the second day of the 28th Dubai International Boat Show, the region’s largest and most popular marine event, which runs until 13th March at Dubai Harbour – the largest marina in the Middle East.

Facing 40-foot waves and extended sleep deprivation, rowing two hours on, two hours off for 24 hours a day, whilst living in cramped conditions, the row will push the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team crew to the very edge of their physical and mental limits. More people have climbed Mount Everest or travelled into space than have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean.

Considered one of the last great adventures on our planet, the UAE’s Arabian Ocean Rowing Team will use the crossing and the global publicity it will bring to raise awareness about some very special causes, including environmental sustainability.

The team will also be running a schools and university programme designed to inspire future generations to embrace challenges, follow their hearts and chase their dreams.

The team of four UAE residents includes Fahim Al Qasimi, who is aiming to become the first Emirati to row across an Ocean. Joining him on the adventure of a lifetime are Toby Gregory, an ultra-endurance athlete from the UK, James Raley, British Army veteran and adventure travel enthusiast, and Rai Tamagnini, a four-time Ironman, marathon runner and mountaineer from Portugal.

The 5,000km (3,000 mile) crossing, which will take between 45 to 60 days, will be completely unsupported and the team of four will have to be totally self-sufficient for the duration of their expedition, relying entirely on desalinated seawater to hydrate, solar energy to power batteries and electronics and eating freeze-dried food, all while confined to a rowing boat which is only 8 meters (26ft) long – shorter than the length of two cars! Speaking at the launch, Team Founder and Project Director, Toby Gregory, said: “The launch of the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team at Dubai International Boat Show is the culmination of seven years of dreaming, planning, hoping, and unrelenting hard work – this long-term dream is now reality. I believe that if you want something enough you can make it happen, even if the odds are against you.

“Our mission is to help others succeed and we hope our schools and universities programme will inspire the next generation to believe that nothing is impossible for those who will try hard enough. When you have a dream, you’ve got to grab it and never let go.”

Fahim Al Qasimi, added: “I am proud to be joining my friends in Arabian Ocean Rowing Team to represent the UAE in the world’s toughest challenge. We’ll be the first team to raise the UAE flag after rowing 5,000km to cross the Atlantic Ocean.”

The sport of ocean rowing started in 1896 when a pair of Norwegian fishermen made a gruelling row in an open boat from New York to Europe – a 2,500-mile journey that took them 92 days and 22 hours. It was not until 70 years later that the feat was repeated by Sir Chay Blyth and John Ridgeway.

Following the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team launch at Dubai International Boat Show, Trixie LohMirmand, Executive Vice President, Events Management at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), the event organiser, said: “Dubai International Boat Show has always sought to unite the entire maritime and sea-faring community, so we are thrilled that the Arabian Ocean Racing Team has chosen to launch its inspiring mission at our event. The four-man team and their boat have already generated significant attention and they will have our full support leading up to and during their historic Atlantic crossing.”

UN warns of impending famine in Yemen

The UN is trying to end the civil war that has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced 4 million people, and brought the country to the brink of famine…reports Asian Lite News

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned on Friday that millions of Yemeni people are at risk of famine as a result of the country’s years-long military conflict and sharp deterioration of its economy, calling for urgent action.

“Children in Yemen are starving not because of a lack of food, but because their families cannot afford food,” the UNICEF said in a statement posted on Twitter, Xinhua news agency reported.

The UN organization said that “the impact of the economic collapse on the humanitarian crisis in Yemen cannot be understated.”

“Without urgent action, millions could be plunged into famine,” it warned.

According to the UNICEF mission in Yemen, nearly 400,000 children under the age of five are slipping from acute malnutrition to severe acute malnutrition.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi militia seized control of several northern provinces and forced the Saudi-backed Yemeni government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.
