Through the collaboration, Digital DEWA’s InfraX, the subsidiary responsible for ICT services, will be the first in the region to offer the utility industry private 5G slicing driven via edge computing…reports Asian Lite News

Digital DEWA – the digital arm of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), one of Dubai 10X Initiative – and du, from Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), have entered a strategic partnership which resulted in the implementation of the region’s first Industrial private 5G slicing through 5G stand-alone (SA) technology.

Through the collaboration, Digital DEWA’s InfraX, the subsidiary responsible for ICT services, will be the first in the region to offer the utility industry private 5G slicing driven via edge computing. The solution will enable DEWA to enhance efficiency and improve the way of handling the business through a dedicated, secured, and state of the art network.

Under this initiative, du will build DEWA’s new mobile core edge infrastructure through a Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) infrastructure solution, which provides separation and independent scaling of control and user planes.

The 5G SA solution from du will enable DEWA’s InfraX to provide seamless and innovative services to DEWA and its subsidiaries. Both parties have agreed to build new use cases to utilise mobile edge computing capability, improving operations, securing networks, and accelerating the digital transformation.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said, “Our collaboration with du reflects of our efforts to bring the latest and most advanced solutions that will drive the country’s digital transformation. The implementation of 5G slicing through 5G SA is a game-changer to the efficiency of the utility industry and others, as it enables business model innovation and provides businesses with the flexibility to offer services faster with higher security.”

Fahad Al Hassawi, Chief Executive Officer of EITC, said, “We are delighted to announce our cooperation with Digital DEWA on this project and drive further innovative action concerning the 5G SA agenda, In doing so, we will not only showcase our technical expertise, but also promote service excellence with innovative solutions, which will present us with further opportunities to enhance customer experiences and solidify our prominent role in the digitisation of the economy.

The region’s first Industrial 5G slicing through 5G SA technology will positively impact several sectors, including utilities, industrial, healthcare, transportation, airports, ports, media, and entertainment. From private network vehicle-to-anything to autonomous driving, remote surgery, remote education and local hosting, the new technology will meet and exceed the emerging requirements of a wide range of users.

UAE sets out vaccination centres for 3-17 age group

The ministry made it clear that the vaccination for 3-15 age group will be optional not mandatory….reports Asian Lite News

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has named the health centres that provide the COVID-19 vaccine for the 3 – 17 age group.

Vaccines are available in 46 health centres in the Northern Emirates, including 19 in Sharjah, 10 in Fujairah, 9 in Ras Al Khaimah, 4 in Ajman, 3 in Umm Al Quwain, and one centre in Dubai.

While the vaccine manufacturing countries such as China, the USA, and Britain have begun conducting a study on the efficacy of the vaccine for this age group, the UAE is considered the MENA’s first country to conduct such study.

The ministry made it clear that the vaccination for 3-15 age group will be optional not mandatory. The vaccine approved for children from 3 to 11 years is Sinopharm, while children from 12 to 15 years will be given either Sinopharm or Pfizer-Biontech.

The announcement follows the recent approval of the emergency use of the Sinopharm vaccine for this age group, based on the results of clinical studies, the strict assessment to approve the emergency use of the vaccine, and the local evaluation that complies with the approved regulations.

The approval for the vaccine comes as part of the UAE’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 virus, and an affirmation of its proactive approach to ensure the health and safety of community members.

Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Public Health Sector, and Chairman of the National Committee for the Implementation of the Provisions of International Health Regulations and Prevention of Pandemics, said, “Over long decades, children in every part of the world used to get safe vaccines against several diseases and viral infections, and the way the Sinopharm vaccine works is the same as these vaccines work.”

Al Rand made it clear that the decision, which was thoroughly examined, represents a significant step forward on the way to the recovery from the pandemic and immunisation of the wider community. He urged families and parents to visit the vaccination centres along with their kids to get vaccinated.

He continued to say that vaccination will protect children and maintain the health of those around them, especially the elderly. It also contributes to achieving the required immunity to limit the spread of the virus. This comes in line with the recovery plan pursued by the UAE, which aims to get 100 percent vaccination of the target groups by the end of 2021.

The UAE, through its humanitarian arm, the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), is providing urgent aid to support civilians affected by wildfires in Greece.

The UAE also assisted the efforts aimed at suppressing the fires, by deploying a helicopter to contain the wildfires on the borders of the Greek capital, Athens.

The aid is upon the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and in implementation of the orders of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and with the monitoring of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC.

In a few hours, an Emirati aircraft loaded with food, health supplies, children’s food supplements and firefighting materials, such as firefighting clothing, pumps, water hoses and relevant accessories, will leave the country to Greece.

Dr. Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, ERC Secretary-General, said the directives of the UAE’s leadership underscore the country’s solidarity with the government and people of Greece in addressing the unprecedented wildfires in the country.

“This support highlights the UAE’s keenness to reduce the impact of the natural disaster taking place in Greece, as well as its unlimited solidarity with victims,” Al Falahi added, noting the ERC’s complete readiness to help in such situations.

Some of the aid materials and equipment was provided by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), he added, while pointing out that phase one of the campaign will focus on providing firefighting materials and shelter requirements, to be followed by other phases that will provide for the various needs of the Greek population.

The ERC is closely monitoring the humanitarian conditions in Greece and is working in coordination with relevant authorities to offer the best services to those affected by the disaster, he said in conclusion.

Dubai Chamber exports, re-exports to W.Africa up 42%

Export markets targeted by member companies were more balanced and diversified when compared to previous years…reports Asian Lite News

Dubai Chamber member companies’ exports and re-exports to West Africa surged by 42 percent in the first five months of 2021 to reach a record $387 million, fuelled by a recovery in trade activity, according to a recent analysis.

The analysis was released by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry as it prepares to host the 6th Global Business Forum Africa in Dubai this October in cooperation with Expo 2020 Dubai. The data revealed that 3,201 Certificates of Origin for West Africa-bound shipments were issued between January and May 2021, marking a year-over-year increase of 20 percent, a Dubai Chamber press release said on Tuesday.

Export markets targeted by member companies were more balanced and diversified when compared to previous years, which is a clear sign that Dubai-based exporters are expanding to new markets.

Nigeria was the largest West African export market for member companies, accounting for a 32 percent share of the value of exports and re-exports to the region, followed by Ghana (17 percent), Ivory Coast and Guinea with 12 percent each, Senegal (8 percent), and Mali (4 percent).

Product categories of exports to the region were also diversified. Plastics accounted for 31 percent of exports, followed by electrical machinery/electronics (14 percent), machinery/mechanical appliances (13percent) and aluminium (6 percent).

The latest estimates by the International Trade Centre (ITC), indicate that there is potential for UAE traders to double their exports and re-exports to the Western Africa markets, currently valued at $2.1 billion.

In terms of markets, Nigeria is currently the largest market for member exports, yet it still has an estimated annual gap of $544 million worth of exports that could be captured in the near term by UAE traders. Senegal comes second with an untapped export potential of $397 million, followed by Ghana with $365 million.

The commodities with the highest untapped potential for export and re-export companies in the West Africa region include polyethylene, sugar cane and rice, trigger batteries, polypropylene, textiles from yarn and milk powder, pure copper wires and other products.

Through its network of representative offices, Dubai Chamber supports businesses exploring promising African markets. These offices – located in Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique and Kenya – identify market opportunities for Dubai Chamber member companies and support African businesses that are keen to enter the Dubai market.

The ‘Programme for People and Planet’ will run across the entire six months of Expo 2020, anchored by 10 Theme Weeks and 18 International Days, each of which explore key issues of global significance, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

Expo 2020 Dubai has revealed the calendar for its ‘Programme for People and Planet,’ a schedule of events, experiences, thought-leadership and public conversations that aims to find solutions for some of the most pressing problems facing the world.

Designed with and for the global community, the programme will harness the connecting power of World Expos to catalyse a legacy of transformative change, according to a press release issued on Monday.

The ‘Programme for People and Planet’ will run across the entire six months of Expo 2020, anchored by 10 Theme Weeks and 18 International Days, each of which explore key issues of global significance. Through the Theme Weeks, participants will investigate solutions to critical global challenges, ranging from mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss and making human habitats more sustainable, to bridging the digital divide and ensuring equal access to education and healthcare.

More than 220 events will take place as part of the programme, from large forums and public conventions, to seminars and workshops. Expo 2020’s signature platform for connecting minds, the World Majlis series will play a prominent role, with 53 individual sessions set to engage visitors over the course of six months.

Underpinned by the themes of technology and innovation, youth and women and girls’ empowerment, the Programme for People and Planet will assemble an unparalleled array of perspectives, fostering exchanges of impactful ideas between leading experts, including wildlife advocate Dame Jane Goodall, Eden Project founder Sir Tim Smit, and Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Sciences and the woman behind the Emirates Mars Mission, and the 191 nations participating in Expo 2020, as well as business leaders, grassroots actors, and the wider global community.

Unlocking bold aspirations to shape a healthier, safer, cleaner and more equitable future for all, the programme will demonstrate that each and every one of Expo 2020’s partners, participants and visitors, whether attending Expo physically or participating remotely via virtual and digital channels, can – and must – become an agent of change.

Nadia Verjee, Chief of Staff, Expo 2020 Dubai, said, “Sitting at the heart of our World Expo, and taking place at a moment in time that could not be more urgent or opportune, the Programme for People and Planet is the manifestation of our theme and purpose – ‘Connecting Minds, Creating The Future’. It will not only form an essential part of our event-time activities, but will also catalyse a one-of-a-kind movement to shape the legacy that Expo 2020 leaves the world, long after we close our doors, resulting in a meaningful and measurable impact for generations to come.”

The Programme for People and Planet reflects challenges and opportunities facing not just the decision-makers of today, but all 7.8 billion people living on this planet.

Five tracks cut across the programme, forming a rich tapestry of exciting events that explore the 10 Theme Weeks through distinct lenses.

Expo’s cultural track, Build Bridges, will break down boundaries, harnessing the power of storytelling, art and music to foster intercultural dialogue and knowledge exchange.

Expo’s social-development track, Leave No One Behind, will spotlight the importance of opportunity for all, asking the question: what can we do today to create a more equitable tomorrow? This track will also have a particular focus on gender equality and last-mile communities at risk of marginalisation.

Climate change is the most serious threat facing our planet – the actions we take now will impact the environment we leave for future generations. The Live in Balance track will focus on how the global community can work together to restore balance with the planet.

At a time of global economic change, the Thrive Together track concentrates on tangible business opportunities. It puts the prospect of robust and resilient growth, and productive partnerships, at the centre of Expo 2020.

Fifty years ago, the Founding Fathers of the UAE conceived a bold vision to carve out a new future for their people. The fifth track, Vision 2071, focuses on the future and how anything is possible if we – the global community – work together.
