    Israel, UAE to operate weekly passenger flights

    Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to operate 28 commercial flights between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi or Dubai per week, Israel’s transportation ministry said in a statement.

    The agreement also allows an unlimited number of charter flights to the smaller Ramon Airport outside Israel’s southern resort city of Eilat, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday.

    Additionally, some 10 cargo flights could be operated per week under the deal.

    The flights in the new route are expected to begin in a few weeks, according to the ministry.

    The agreement comes after a US-brokered normalization deal between the UAE and Israel was signed at the White House on September 15.

    While participating in a meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, to discuss the return to schools in Arab countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jameela Al Muheiri, Minister of State for Public Education, said that the UAE’s leadership is keen to ensure the continuity of education in the country, despite the dire circumstances, as it strongly believes in the importance of educational sustainability.

    The UAE was one of the first countries to adopt smart learning, as it is included in its future strategy, she added, noting that the Ministry of Education, upon the directives of the country’s leadership, adopted smart learning tools in 2012 and drafted plans to ensure they are successfully used in classrooms.

    “Smart education was implemented on a large scale in the UAE in 2017 and 2018, and in 2019 it was fully adopted. Due to the pandemic’s effects on everyone’s lives around the world, the country is relying on smart education in 2020,” she added.

    “The ministry is offering 13 educational platforms on its smart education portal, and has trained 25,000 teachers in the public sector to use smart education tools, along with nearly 9,200 school principals and teachers from private schools. A specialist training course on remote learning was also held, in cooperation with the Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart University, for some 67,000 people.

    Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth, has held a discussion with Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir, Iceland’s Minister of Education, Science and Culture, to review options in reinforcing cultural and creative relations between the UAE and Iceland.

    During the meeting, Al Kaabi reviewed the achievements of the creative sector since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the efforts of all institutions to provide a rich and creative experience through employing modern digital technologies.

    She also explained the objectives of a strategy related to cultural and creative industries currently being developed by the ministry, which aims to encourage investment in the sector and open new markets for creative Emirati exports, through a package of initiatives and incentives to be offered to local talents and the nation’s youth.

    “Iceland is currently diversifying its economy by expanding its range of exports and increasing its investment in the tourism sector and creative economy,” Alfreðsdóttir said, noting that this approach has created thousands of jobs for students during the summer break.

    Iceland also implemented a policy for the movie industry and is currently drafting a comprehensive programme for creative industries, she added.

    The UAE Ambassador to Senegal Sultan Ali Al Harbi had a meeting with Moustapha Niasse, Speaker of the Senegalese National Assembly. They discussed relations between the UAE and Senegal, and opportunities to develop ties between the two countries in various fields.

    During the meeting held at the National Assembly headquarters, the two sides also discussed issues of common interest.

    Al Harbi expressed his pleasure at representing his country in Senegal, affirming his keenness to strengthen bilateral relations across all sectors in a way that contributes to strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two countries.

    In turn, Niasse praised the development of UAE-Senegal ties, stressing the importance of the UAE in Senegal’s foreign policy as an important partner and ally in the Gulf and Arab world.

    He also congratulated the ambassador on his appointment as the UAE Ambassador to Senegal.

    In its capacity as the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (WAIPA) regional director for MENA, the Sharjah FDI Office (Invest in Sharjah), an affiliate of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), recently led a regional members’ meeting virtually in association with WAIPA.

    It was organised to analyse how investment promotion agencies (IPAs) in the MENA region have been responding to the changes brought about by the global health crisis, and discuss strategies to be able to successfully create sustainable investment ecosystems for a post-Covid era.

    Prominent speakers at the meeting titled ‘Beyond the COVID-19 Crisis – Investment Promotion Agencies and the New Normal’, included Mohamed Juma Al Musharrkh – CEO, Invest in Sharjah; the Regional Director of WAIPA Steering Committee for the MENA region, and member of the Steering Committee; Bostjan Skalar – Executive Director and CEO, WAIPA; Beligh Ben Soltane – President, Tunisia Investment Authority (TIA); Abdelbasset Ghanmi – General Manager, Agence de Promotion de l’Investissement Exterieur (FIPA); Haytham Wahidi – CEO, Palestinian Investment Promotion Agency (PIPA); Ms. Amira Murad – Investment Development Authority of Lebanon (IDAL); and Ahmed Omic – Research Analyst, WAIPA.

    Leading the discussions, Al Musharrkh, said Invest In Sharjah welcomed the opportunity to learn from regional investment leaders about the approaches various organisations have been taking to overcome challenges posed by the pandemic, and looked forward collaborate with the 54 IPAs in the MENA region – including 24 from the Middle East – to overcome them.

    Sheikh Abdullah visits Hindu temple site in Abu Dhabi

    Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, inspected the site of Abu Dhabi’s first ever Hindu temple and reviewed its construction progress.

    The foundation stone of the temple was laid in April last year and work started from December, which is expected to be completed in 2022, the Khaleej Times reported on Friday.

    During the site inspection, Sheikh Abdullah met representatives of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, the community-based social and spiritual organisation building the temple.

    The Minister also held discussions with Pujya Brahmavihari Swami, leader of the Hindu community and head of BAPS Hindu Mandir.

    Following the meeting, Brahmavihari Swami highlighted how the project team and the entire Hindu community were dedicated to making this long-term contribution to the UAE.

    “It is a unique chance to not just preserve ancient art and architecture, but to create new art and a new legacy that will last for thousands of years,” he was quoted as saying in the Khaleej Times report.

    “In these challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic, such a project of global harmony will regenerate faith and hope, and celebrate the unique friendship between India and the UAE and their dedication to progress and peace,” he added.

    Pavan Kapoor, Ambassador of India to the UAE, who was part of the discussions, noted how the temple would serve a sizeable population of the UAE and the Gulf.

    The United Arab Emirates’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan has taken the Covid 19 vaccine.Reports Arab News

    Al-Nahyan tweeted an image of himself receiving the trial vaccine with a caption saying “corona vaccination is our way to return to normal life.”

    Last month, UAE issued emergency approval for the COVID-19 vaccine for frontline healthcare workers.

    “The vaccine will be available to our first line of defense heroes who are at the highest risk of contracting the virus,” the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority said.

    Its effective and has resulted in a “strong response” by generated antibodies in trial volunteers, the health minister said.

    The Ministry of Health and Prevention, MoHAP, announced that it conducted 116,470 additional COVID-19 tests over the past 24 hours, using state-of-the-art medical testing equipment.

    On Friday,As part of its intensified testing campaign, MoHAP announced 1,412 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of recorded cases in the UAE to 112,849.

    According to the Ministry, the infected individuals are from various nationalities, are in a stable condition, and are receiving the necessary care.

    MoHAP also announced 3 deaths due to COVID-19 complications, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 455.

    The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, chaired the 85th meeting of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Ministers of Housing and Reconstruction.The meeting was held remotely on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, and attended by relevant Arab ministers.

    In his opening speech, Al Mazrouei stressed the importance of ensuring the future of housing and urban development and the necessity of advancing this vital sector, affirming that the UAE is ready to share its housing and urban development plans.

    He also highlighted the importance of holding the meeting amidst the exceptional conditions witnessed by the world caused by the coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic, to discuss ways of achieving the sustainability of the housing sector, which is key to sustainable development.

    He added that the majority of Arab countries are facing mutual challenges, in addition to the challenges resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, which requires everyone’s cooperation to achieve their desired objectives and the happiness of their citizens.

    Al Mazrouei explained that the UAE Government, since the establishment of the Union in 1971, has always prioritised the housing sector, noting that its related plans include supporting, development and organising the sector, to enable all citizens to obtain suitable housing that will achieve family stability and quality of life, which are two key pillars of the UAE Vision 2021 and major features of the preparations for the next fifty years from 2021 to 2071.
