    FINALLY, SOME GOOD NEWS!

Mayor Sadiq Khan Freezes Bus and Tram Fares for Historic Sixth Year. He unveiled TfL fares package for 2025, with a freeze to bus and tram fares, keeping them one of the lowest in the UK, and helping to boost ridership across the city

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced a freeze on bus and tram fares for the sixth consecutive year, a historic decision that ensures Londoners will continue paying the same rates as they have since March 2023. This move keeps bus and tram fares among the lowest in the UK, boosting affordability and encouraging ridership across the capital’s extensive network.

The bus remains the most used form of public transport in the capital. Across London, bus ridership continues to grow, with more than 1 billion bus journeys made already this financial year. More than 95 per cent of Londoners live within 400 metres of a bus stop and the Mayor has worked hard to ensure buses remain the most accessible, affordable and sustainable form of transport.

The freeze is a significant boon for lower-income and disabled Londoners, who predominantly rely on these accessible and economical services. Bus ridership, a cornerstone of London’s public transport system, remains robust with over one billion journeys made this financial year alone. More than 95% of Londoners live within 400 meters of a bus stop, further cementing the importance of buses in the city’s transport ecosystem.

Key initiatives, such as the Hopper fare, continue to make travel affordable by offering unlimited bus and tram journeys within an hour for just £1.75. Since Mayor Khan’s first election in 2016, fares have increased by just 25p, a figure significantly lower than inflation rates over the same period.

However, the Mayor also confirmed that Tube and rail fares across London will rise by 4.6% starting March 2, 2025, in line with national rail fare increases. This decision follows the UK Government’s directive, tying fare hikes to continued funding for critical transport infrastructure projects, such as Superloop 2 and Tube upgrades.

While the increase affects Tube and rail users, TfL has worked to minimize the impact. Pay-as-you-go fares in Zone 1, for example, will rise by only 10p, and caps for daily travel across multiple zones will see proportional increases.

“Londoners know from my record that wherever possible I’ve made TfL fares more affordable and fairer,” said the mayor. “I’m really pleased to announce this sixth consecutive freeze on bus and tram fares, benefiting those on the lowest incomes.

“Following the Government’s budget, ministers made clear that to secure national funding for key transport projects, TfL Tube and rail fares would need to increase. This funding will allow us to progress exciting projects like Superloop 2, as we continue building a fairer, safer, and greener London.”

Alex Williams, TfL’s Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, reinforced the sentiment:  “This fares package aims to keep fares as affordable as possible while supporting London’s economic growth. With daily and weekly capping, the Hopper fare, and our wide range of concessions, we’re ensuring customers get the best value.”

All existing concessions, including the Zip and 60+ London photocards, will remain in place, providing free or discounted travel to millions of Londoners.

The freeze on bus and tram fares will support lower-income and disabled Londoners, who are more likely to use bus and tram services, the most accessible way to get around London. With this dual approach—freezing bus and tram fares while modestly increasing Tube and rail fares—Mayor Khan aims to balance affordability, sustainability, and the need for future investment in London’s world-class transport network.

Major CCTV Upgrade Transforms London’s Safety Network…reports Asian Lite News

London’s streets are under sharper watch than ever before, thanks to a £30 million investment by Mayor Sadiq Khan to overhaul the city’s CCTV infrastructure.

The ambitious project has delivered over 300 new and upgraded cameras, producing high-definition footage to improve public safety and enhance crime prevention efforts across the capital.

This substantial funding is part of the Connected London programme, which focuses on expanding full-fibre connectivity to hard-to-reach areas. The investment not only improves CCTV capabilities but also supports a range of innovative public services, including air quality monitoring, traffic congestion management, and enhanced neighbourhood policing.

Mayor Khan emphasized the importance of technology in maintaining this progress: “As a thriving global city, it’s essential that London’s digital infrastructure is kept fully updated. These new and upgraded CCTV cameras will improve safety after dark and help present stronger evidence in criminal trials. I’m committed to working with the police, partners, and businesses to create a safer London for everyone.”

The state-of-the-art CCTV cameras now deliver clearer, real-time images that can be accessed by local councils, Transport for London (TfL), and the Metropolitan Police. With sharper footage, authorities can better identify suspects, reduce response times, and provide stronger evidence in criminal trials.

Commander Owain Richards of the Met Police highlighted the significance of the upgrades:

“These improvements give our officers the tools they need to crack down on crime and bring perpetrators to justice. The Met will continue to work with the Mayor and partners to ensure London remains a safer place.”

The improvements are part of a broader strategy to integrate technology into crime prevention under the New Met for London Plan, which is being supported by record investment from City Hall.

Councils across London have embraced the new technology. In Merton, for instance, 55 new cameras have been installed, powered by upgraded fibre infrastructure. These enhancements have enabled real-time video feeds, helping CCTV operators identify offenders and tip off police in critical moments.

Councillor Edith Macauley MBE, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety in Merton, praised the programme: “The full HD quality images on our static and mobile cameras make identifying crimes and offenders much easier. This has been crucial in preventing crime, responding to incidents faster, and bringing criminals to justice.”

The borough’s upgrades have also reduced running costs, allowing resources to be redirected to other community safety initiatives.

The Connected London programme extends beyond surveillance. It includes the deployment of sensors to monitor air quality and manage traffic congestion. These advancements are part of a broader effort to create a smarter, more connected city.

Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer at TfL, emphasized the wider benefits of the project: “Our work to expand fibre connectivity across London is delivering tangible benefits for Londoners. These upgrades not only support public safety but also unlock growth opportunities and better use of digital technology for all.”

The CCTV upgrades complement other safety measures in London, such as enhanced neighbourhood policing. City Hall credits these efforts with contributing to a reduction in violent crime across the capital.

According to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, violent crime rates in London are lower than in the rest of England and Wales. Personal robbery has dropped by 5% in the last year, and crimes such as burglary, gun crime, and knife-related injuries among under-25s have all declined since 2016.

The £30 million investment is more than an upgrade—it’s a commitment to building a safer, smarter London. By combining cutting-edge technology with enhanced public services, the initiative aims to set a new standard for urban safety and connectivity.

From high-definition CCTV cameras to advanced sensors, London’s streets are becoming safer and more efficient, ensuring that residents and businesses alike can thrive in a secure environment.

With the Mayor pledging continued collaboration with councils, TfL, and the Met Police, this transformation is just the beginning of a safer and smarter future for the capital.

Starmer highlighted immediate gains for the North of England, including a transformative partnership between Manchester-based Graphene Innovation Manchester (GIM) and Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Giga-Project. The collaboration will launch the world’s first commercial production of graphene-enriched carbon fibre, an eco-friendly material that aims to revolutionise advanced manufacturing.

The £250 million investment in a research and innovation hub in Greater Manchester is expected to create over 1,000 skilled jobs, cementing the region’s role as a global leader in sustainable materials.

Speaking in Riyadh, the Prime Minister stressed his commitment to linking international partnerships with local regeneration:

“Every region and nation in the United Kingdom should feel the impact of our Plan for Change. My international agenda starts at home, ensuring that diplomacy delivers real jobs, growth, and opportunities for people across the UK.”

The visit also marked significant strides in the UK-Saudi green energy partnership. Oxford-based private equity fund HYCAP has pledged £785 million to develop hydrogen mobility clusters across the UK, including Northern Ireland, creating over 1,000 jobs and supporting Saudi Arabia’s net-zero ambitions by 2060.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his accompanying delegation arrived at King Khalid International Airport on Monday night. He was received by Deputy Governor of Riyadh Region Prince Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz, Saudi Ambassador to the UK Prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Commerce Dr. Majid Al-Kassabi (the accompanying minister), Mayor of Riyadh Region Prince Dr. Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, Ambassador of the UK to Saudi Arabia Neil Crompton, Acting Director of the Riyadh Region Police Major General Mansour bin Nasser Al-Otaibi, and Deputy Chief of Royal Protocol Fahad Al-Suhail.

Additionally, the UK and Saudi Arabia announced plans to establish a Joint International Institute for Clean Hydrogen. This collaboration, led by universities from both nations, including Newcastle University, will advance clean energy expertise and innovation. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness is accompanying the Prime Minister to secure further green energy investments.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband praised the agreements: “These investments in clean energy demonstrate how our Plan for Change can create new jobs, boost energy independence, and position the UK as a global clean energy superpower.”

Britain is advancing its commitment to a two-state solution in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Sir Michael Barber has been reappointed as the UK’s Envoy for Palestinian Authority Governance to assist in governance reforms and service improvements…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged a strengthened UK presence in the Middle East, emphasising the region’s critical role in global and domestic security. During his Gulf tour, Sir Keir unveiled plans to deepen defence partnerships, provide humanitarian aid, and support conflict resolution efforts.

The prime minister said the UK will provide an additional £11 million in humanitarian support for Syria, aiding over 370,000 displaced individuals through UN and NGO programs. A landmark agreement with Saudi Arabia will strengthen the UK-Saudi defence partnership, focusing on combat air systems and industrial collaboration. This builds on the Royal Saudi Air Force’s long-standing use of UK-manufactured Typhoon combat aircraft.

The UK will also bolster the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) with training and equipment to secure southern Lebanon as part of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

“From cutting the cost of living to supporting resilient supply chains, what happens in the Middle East directly impacts British people,” said the prime minister. “To deliver my Plan for Change, we need a strong foundation of security, both at home and abroad. That’s why the UK is stepping up its role to support stability in this vitally important region.”

The UK is advancing its commitment to a two-state solution in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Sir Michael Barber has been reappointed as the UK’s Envoy for Palestinian Authority Governance to assist in governance reforms and service improvements.

The Prime Minister linked Middle East stability to UK economic resilience, citing British Chamber of Commerce data showing that 50% of UK businesses have been affected by the Israel-Gaza conflict. Rising shipping costs, with container rates surging from $1,000 in October 2023 to nearly $4,000 today, highlight the critical need for stable trade routes.

In a related development, the UK has joined the US-Bahrain Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA), aimed at fostering shared security and economic growth across the Middle East.

The UK’s reinforced role in the Middle East aligns with the government’s mission to protect global stability while creating growth opportunities at home. By tackling regional threats and supporting diplomatic solutions, the UK aims to secure a safer, more prosperous future for both the Middle East and the world.

Prime Minister Meets Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for Strategic Talks. Economic cooperation formed the bedrock of the meeting, with both sides exploring ways to expand trade and investment. The talks highlighted the potential for increased collaboration in renewable energy, infrastructure development, and high-tech industries

Prime Minister Keir Starmer met Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh in a high-profile diplomatic meeting aimed at strengthening ties between the UK and the Gulf powerhouse.

Against the backdrop of evolving global challenges and economic uncertainty, the discussions underscored the UK’s growing reliance on international partnerships to drive its domestic agenda. The meeting commenced with a formal reception where the Crown Prince welcomed Starmer and his delegation. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to his team, setting a positive tone for what became a productive and wide-ranging discussion.

Both leaders reaffirmed the strong ties between their nations, emphasizing their mutual commitment to fostering a partnership that balances economic growth, security, and innovation. The talks also highlighted the shared interest in leveraging each country’s resources and expertise to address mutual interests, from renewable energy to defence strategies.

A key focus of the discussions was Starmer’s recently unveiled Plan for Change, an ambitious blueprint designed to tackle economic stagnation in the UK. Announced last week, the plan focuses on revitalising key sectors, boosting job creation, and ensuring long-term prosperity.

Starmer outlined how partnerships with Saudi Arabia could play a pivotal role in this transformation. He stressed the importance of Saudi investments, particularly in the green energy sector, which is at the core of the UK’s growth strategy. The Prime Minister acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s substantial contributions to renewable energy initiatives in Britain, emphasizing how these projects are driving job creation and helping the UK transition to a more sustainable economy.

“Saudi Arabia’s commitment to green energy aligns seamlessly with our national goals. Their investments are not just welcome—they are essential to achieving the vision we’ve set out in the Plan for Change,” Starmer said.

The leaders also discussed Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Vision 2030, the Crown Prince’s signature initiative to modernize the Saudi economy and society. Starmer praised the transformative agenda, which includes a focus on diversifying the kingdom’s economy, advancing human rights, and fostering innovation in science and technology.

The Prime Minister noted the alignment between Vision 2030 and the UK’s aspirations for growth, innovation, and sustainability. “The changes Saudi Arabia is implementing under Vision 2030 are groundbreaking,” Starmer remarked. “We see tremendous opportunities to collaborate on shared priorities, from green technology to cutting-edge research and development.”

Both leaders agreed that the reform agenda in Saudi Arabia is crucial for fostering economic growth and improving the nation’s global standing. The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to address human rights issues, commending steps already taken while encouraging continued progress.

Discussions moved beyond bilateral issues to address pressing regional and global challenges. The leaders acknowledged the critical role of UK-Saudi relations in ensuring stability in the Middle East.

The escalating humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza was a central topic. Starmer shared his perspective on how the conflict could be de-escalated and welcomed the Crown Prince’s insights on fostering peace in the region.

Both leaders agreed on the need to prioritize the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, emphasizing the importance of alleviating suffering on all sides. Starmer called for an urgent acceleration of aid efforts and highlighted the UK’s commitment to supporting peace-building initiatives.

Economic cooperation formed the bedrock of the meeting, with both sides exploring ways to expand trade and investment. The talks highlighted the potential for increased collaboration in renewable energy, infrastructure development, and high-tech industries.

Saudi Arabia’s ongoing investments in the UK, particularly in the green energy sector, have already had a transformative impact. From offshore wind farms to cutting-edge solar projects, Saudi-backed initiatives are helping the UK meet its ambitious climate goals while creating thousands of jobs.

In return, the UK offers expertise in research and development, education, and financial services—areas where Saudi Arabia seeks to accelerate progress under Vision 2030. The meeting explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in these fields, ensuring mutual benefits for both nations.

Another key area of discussion was defence and security. Both leaders emphasized the importance of their countries’ long-standing cooperation in maintaining regional stability and combating global threats.

With tensions in the Middle East and beyond showing no signs of abating, the UK and Saudi Arabia are keen to enhance intelligence-sharing and joint military exercises. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Saudi Arabia’s security efforts, while the Crown Prince stressed the importance of collective action in addressing shared threats.

In a bid to deepen personal ties, Starmer extended a formal invitation to the Crown Prince to visit the UK.

The significance of the meeting was underscored by the high-level delegations accompanying both leaders. On the Saudi side, key officials included Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman (Minister of Energy), Prince Khalid bin Salman (Minister of Defence), and Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih.

The British delegation featured National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell, Deputy Chief of the Prime Minister’s Office Vidhya Alakeson, and Special Advisor for Business and Investment Varun Chandra, among others.

King revokes honours of Ranger, Bhanot

Action was taken against Bhanot after a website 5 Pillars raised complaints about tweets to the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Charity Commission…reports Asian Lite News

Two British-Indian Tory (Conservative) peers Rami Ranger and Hindu Council UK managing trustee Anil Bhanot were stripped of their honours by the King. Ranger was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), while Bhanot received the Officer of the Order (OBE).

According to an official notice published in the London Gazette, “THE KING has directed that the appointment of Raminder Singh, Baron RANGER to be a Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated December 31, 2015, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.” The same order was issued for Bhanot who was appointed as OBE on June 12,  2010.

Action was taken against Bhanot after a website 5 Pillars raised complaints about tweets to the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Charity Commission. He allegedly tweeted ‘Islamophobic’ tweets where he was condemning violence against Bangladeshi Hindus in 2021.

Meanwhile, Ranger lost his honour after complaints filed by the organization Sikhs for Justice which is banned in India. He was also accused of harassing and bullying an Indian-origin journalist Poonam Joshi on social media.

Ranger and Bhanot criticised the revocation of their honours, calling it an attack on freedom of expression. Bhanot was initially awarded the OBE for his contributions to community cohesion.

He stated that when the committee contacted him in January, he hoped the issue would be resolved, but that did not happen.

Lord Ranger said he was devastated to have been stripped of the honour and would explore various legal avenues to challenge the ‘unjust’ decision, according to BBC.

A spokesperson for Lord Ranger reportedly said the peer did not commit any crime or broke any law. They also added that many who have their awards revoked this way were associated with serious crimes.

The spokesperson also called the move a ‘sad indictment’ of the honour system, and that it was curtailing ‘basic fundamental rights of free speech and thought process,” according to reports.

“The King has directed that the appointment of Raminder Singh, Baron Ranger to be a Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated December 31, 2015, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order,” reads the official public notice in ‘The London Gazette’.

The revocation orders came reportedly after a review of the forfeiture committee. The committee examines cases of individuals with honours, whose action might ruin the reputation of the honorary system. The forfeiture committee’s recommendations were then conveyed to King Charles III through Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Both Ranger and Bhanot have criticised the move terming it an “attack on free speech”.

Ranger, who has openly criticised the Khalistan movement, in a statement to the media following the revocation said, “Today I lost my CBE for standing up against Khalistanis who wish to break up India and the BBC for producing a two-part documentary with the help of anti-Prime Minister Modi guests to imply that the PM was involved in the Gujarat riots some 20 years after the riots and for which PM Modi was exonerated by the highest court in India”.

He also mentioned that he has plans to take this up legally, seek a judicial review and added that he would be appealing against the decision with the European Court of Human Rights.

King and Queen’s Christmas card revealed

The photograph – taken in April – shows the smiling couple standing side-by-side on what appears to be a sunny day…reports Asian Lite News

King Charles and Queen Camilla have chosen a photograph of themselves taken in the garden of Buckingham Palace for their official Christmas card.

The photograph – taken in April – shows the smiling couple standing side-by-side on what appears to be a sunny day. The greeting inside reads “Wishing you a very happy Christmas and New Year”.

The King – standing on the left – is wearing a grey suit and blue tie with his right hand tucked into his pocket, while the Queen wears a blue wool crepe dress. This photograph is their third Christmas card since Charles became King.

The image, captured by photographer Millie Pilkington, was taken as the King returned to public duties following his cancer diagnosis and treatment. The palace said the card reflects the moment life was beginning to return to normality.

The photograph is also a more informal picture than the one chosen for Christmas 2023. Last year’s picture was captured by Hugo Burnand and showed the royal couple in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace following the coronation.

The couple were standing side-by-side, with King Charles pictured wearing the Imperial State Crown and Queen Camilla wearing Queen Mary’s Crown. Christmas images used to decorate official festive cards are regularly released by senior members of the Royal Family.

It will take Charles and Camilla several days to personally sign all the cards. There will be around 2,700 which will be sent to people across the globe including family, friends, world leaders and organisations.
