‘Dusk Notes’ – draws one closer to the Divine

The first single ‘Notes at Dusk’, the most spiritual track of the release rests your mind letting the music envelop you while the second single, ‘On the banks of Jamuna’, set in the midnight melancholic raga Madhuvanthi conveys the longing of a friend for Lord Krishna…writes Prof. Geetha Upadhyaya, OBE

Dusk Notes, an innovative spiritual album created by the UK based reputed classical Indian vocalist, Supriya Nagarajan, speaks in particular, to Krishna the popular and widely revered Indian divine who reflects compassion, tenderness and love.

Supriya’s melodious singing in ‘Be Kinder’ held at the 2019 National Trust sponsored event at the Peak District impressed the creators and hosts of the event, Jarvis Cocker, the ‘Pulp’ front man and BBC Radio 6 presenter and the Turner Prize-winning artist JeremyDeller. They encouraged Supriya to create an album showcasing her amazing voice and the music she created for ‘Be Kinder’.

Thus, was born ‘Dusk Notes’ featuring 2 tracks of spoken word devised by Supriya and four songs whose melodies date back to the original Indian ragas of the 2nd and 3rd century AD which blend with the mood of a mellow winter dusky twilight.

The first single ‘Notes at Dusk’, the most spiritual track of the release rests your mind letting the music envelop you while the second single, ‘On the banks of Jamuna’, set in the midnight melancholic raga Madhuvanthi conveys the longing of a friend for Lord Krishna.

Another key track, ‘Places Unknown’, questions the relevance of humanity in the ecosystem through the interesting combination of the two ragas Madhuvanthi and Panthuvarali normally not set alongside each other to deliberately create chaos reaching out to the stillness of Lord Shiva.

The track ‘Edale Interlude’ set to the raga Desh is a moody, nostalgic walk through an autumn garden where the leaves are drifting away revealing the shimmering tones of the dusky eve.

Now, a short introduction to the artists who contributed to Dusk Notes –

Supriya Nagarajan, a Mumbai born Carnatic music trained artist forged ahead as a solo artist with many exciting projects and the latest – ‘Dusk Notes’ is her first commercial release, proving that one can achieve the utmost with the drive and the passion.

Leaving behind a lucrative banking career, Supriya merged with music and, in 2005, created Manasamitra, a UK based arts organisation which she leads as the CEO fulfilling her original passion for music and presenting traditional and contemporary Indian art, giving UK audiences an ambience of India, it’s tradition and culture.

Being a synesthete (where information meant to stimulate one sense stimulates multiple senses) Supriya’s music is a full sensory journey for her, involving an array of colours, emotions, taste and smell. Steeped in this concept, Supriya chose the building blocks of Indian music or Ragas that respond to that sensory experience related to the time of the day.

A key collaborator in Dusk Notes is Duncan Chapman, a composer and sound artist who regularly works with many leading international music organisations. Duncan’s recent projects include, a large-scale orchestral piece ‘But where do we get the water?’ for the London Chamber Orchestra at Casa da Música (Porto) and directing the Fanfare project for young composers at Royal Opera House Reeds and wind at Snape Maltings.

For ‘Dusk Notes’ Duncan sampled some beautiful natural sounds including the Dawn chorus at Willingham by Stow Lincolnshire, Streams at La Chaux Switzerland and the evening ambiences in Helsinki and Bergen and even candles burning in St James Church, Reading.

Karin De Fleyt, a Belgium based concert flautist who works at the Leeds Conservatoire and tours with the Hermes Ensemble played on the track “On the banks of Jamuna” track.

Dusk Notes’ was recorded at the University of Huddersfield by Mark Mynett, a record producer/mixing, mastering and live music engineer, and works as a Senior Lecturer in Music Technology and Production at the University of Huddersfield since 2006.

Boris rules out full national lockdown

The UK Prime Minister’s statement came after Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced big changes to the Job Support Scheme set to replace furlough in November in a bid to support businesses affected by the pandemic in England’s “high alert” Tier Two areas…reports Asian Lite News

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reiterated his stand to avoid a national lockdown against the COVID-19 pandemic, saying his government will work hard to protect jobs and put the country in a better position for an economic recovery.

“I don’t believe a full lockdown is the right course,” Xinhua news agency quoted Johnson as saying at a press briefing on Thursday at Downing Street.

“To all those enduring these restrictions in all parts of the country, I want to repeat my thanks for your bravery, for your patience, and for your public spirited-ness,” the Prime Minister said.

Johnson said the current restrictions are working and that virus reproduction number, known as the R number, is half its “natural rate”.

His statement came after Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced big changes to the Job Support Scheme set to replace furlough in November in a bid to support businesses affected by the pandemic in England’s “high alert” Tier Two areas.

Under the revised scheme, employers will pay less and staff can work fewer hours before they qualify for project.

Among the measures, instead of employees working at least a third of their hours to qualify for support, they will now have to work just one day a week.

Meanwhile, employers will now only pay 5 per cent of wages toward the cost of hours not worked.

Sunak also announced that a new grant scheme will open for businesses, including hospitality in Tier Two areas, for up to 2,100 pounds per month.

Joining Johnson for the press briefing, Sunak said: “Our plan for jobs will support British people and businesses wherever they live and whatever their situation… We will listen and respond to peoples’ concerns as the situation evolves.”

Also present at the press briefing, the government’s Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance said hospitalizations have dramatically increased from a month ago with more people going into intensive care and an increase in deaths.

The R number, which currently stands between 1.2 and 1.5, is half its natural rate, which shows masks and handwashing is working, said Vallance.

“But we need to do more,” he added.

The new three-tier COVID-19 alert system set out by Johnson came into force last week across England as the country struggles to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The alert system comprises three levels: “Medium”, “High” and “Very High” with the level being decided according to local infection rates.

The UK has so far reported a total of 813,451 coronavirus cases and 44,437 deaths.

Pramod Mittal: Britain’s biggest bankrupt

Steel tycoon Pramod Mittal has gone down into depths of unprecedented financial liabilities after a financial deal guaranteed by him collapsed. Pramod, who spent 50 million pounds on his daughter’s wedding in 2013, now claims that he owns only a small stretch of land in India.

The businessman says that the loans he originally took out have ballooned dozens of times over due to interest payments and the total liabilities now lie at 2.5 billion pounds, reports Daily Mail.

He says he now owes £170m to his 94-year-old father, £1.1m to his wife, Sangeeta, £2.4m to their 30-year-old son Divyesh and another £1.1m to his brother-in-law Amit Lohia, 45.

Mr Mittal said: ‘I have no personal income. My wife is financially independent from me. We have separate bank accounts and I have very limited information regarding her income’.

The roots of Pramod’s current troubles date back 14 years, when he agreed to act as a guarantor for the debts of a coke producer in Bosnia known as GIKIL, a partnership between his Isle of Man-registered Global Steel Holdings and the Bosnian state.

GIKIL subsequently failed to make repayments, trapping him in a predicament. That debt was then pursued by a company named Moorgate Industries, which obtained the bankruptcy order, according to the mail.

It is reported that Pramod’s brother and the promoter of Luxembourg-based Arcelor Mittal steel business, Lakshmi Mittal could easily bail him out even though the sums are huge. Lakshmi’s net worth is fixed somewhere around $10 billion.

Boris Seeks United Front Against Covid

The British prime minister says the entire world needs to pull together to recover from the impact of Covid-19 … reports Asian Lite News

With the United Kingdom set to take leadership of the G7 and chair the global climate change conference COP26 in 2021, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the country will play an important role in how the world takes recovery from “a tiny pathogen” that has devastated society.

in an interview with The National, he revealed how his personal experience with the disease has helped him to renew his resolve to protect the public and the health system while ensuring that the economy stays afloat.

In March, Johnson was admitted to intensive care affected with Covid-19. After his release he had paid tribute to the health care professionals who looked after him. Six months later, he sounded confident recovering from pandemic emphasizing Britain’s support to universal access to any potential vaccine.

“I’m determined that the UK will drive forward the effort to find a vaccine, repair the global economy and prevent future health crises,” he told The National.

Johnson added that he has set out a five-point plan to prevent future pandemics which includes proposals like developing a worldwide network of zoonotic hubs to spot diseases before they leap from animals to humans, a pandemic early warning system and measures to reduce trade barriers on health-critical items.

“The UK will work with our international partners to put this plan into action. The basic functions of our societies have ground to a halt thanks to this tiny pathogen – we can’t allow that to happen again.”

Ties with the Gulf

The prime minister stated that his country wishes to develop ties with the countries in the Gulf region. He also said that he looks forward to next month’s Riyadh G20 summit as an important step for co-ordinated international efforts to repair the damage brought out by the virus.

“Some 175,000 British nationals live in the Gulf, and before Covid affected all our lives, one million Brits visited each year – to do business, forge relationships and enjoy some of that fabled sunshine.”-he said.

UK’s priority is to reach agreements on health, the economy and climate among the G20 nations which includes global access to any coronavirus vaccine, debt financing for developing and middle-income countries, and tangible measures to tackle climate change. These goals should be anchored on a continued commitment to free trade for sustainable recovery.

Johnson also made comments on his country’s relationship with Iran. He stated that Britain would not be complacent in dealing with Iran as UN arms embargo on the country expires on Sunday.

“I’ve voiced my concern on many occasions about the destabilising role Iran plays in the region. We’re working hard, including at the UN, to find a constructive solution to address the threat to security posed by the expiry of the arms embargo.”-he said.

Johnson made it clear that working together to tackle shared security challenges is the basis of Britain’s relationship with many Gulf states and he considers this partnership pivotal for the safety and security of the UK.

On being asked about the recent agreement between the UAE, Bahrain and Israel, Mr Johnson said he welcomed the Abraham Accords “as a positive step on the path to peace” by normalising relations. He added that co-operation and dialogue must win out over hostility and division. UK’s plan to strengthen relations with the Gulf was clear in Johnson’s statement that they are exploring areas where the UK can work with all three countries to deepen that cooperation.

Mr. Johnson sounded positive on Palestine issue while he welcomed the suspension of Israel’s further annexation plans. He also expressed UK’s commitment to the negotiations on the establishment of a sovereign state in Palestine.

“We support a negotiated agreement leading to a safe and secure Israel living alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. This would be based on 1967 borders with agreed land swaps, Jerusalem as the shared capital of both states, and a fair settlement for refugees,” he added.

He went on to say that that there is no substitute for direct talks between the Palestinians and Israelis and any effort to bring the two parties together must be encouraged. He also expressed UK’s willingness to facilitate meaningful dialogue in any way that they can.

He also commented on UAE’s gift of 100 tonnes of protective equipment at the height of the spring Covid-19 crisis, calling it “a bright spot of cooperation and friendship” at a time when the virus was spreading rapidly.

He stressed the need for international unity while the world is grappling with the corona virus. He believes that recovery is possible if there is spirit of united endeavour between countries.

‘’If the world is to recover from this devastating pandemic, we will have to pull together,” he said.

UK police gains access to NHS’s test and trace details

People who fail to self-isolate “without reasonable justification” could have their names, address and contact details passed on to their local authority and then to the police…Reports Asian Lite News

People who have been asked to self-isolate through the test and trace system of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) could have their contact details shared with the police, it was announced.

In a statement on Sunday, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) confirmed that police forces will have access “on a case-by-case” basis to information, enabling them to know if an individual has been told to self-isolate, Xinhua news agency reported.

People who fail to self-isolate “without reasonable justification” could have their names, address and contact details passed on to their local authority and then to the police, the DHSC’s said.

“This may lead to enforcement action being taken against you, which could include you being fined,” it added.

Currently, people in England are legally required to self-isolate if they test positive for the novel coronavirus.

Those who fail to do so face fines starting at 1,000 pounds and increasing up to 10,000 pounds for repeat offenders or serious breaches, the DHSC said.

Reacting to the development, a National Police Chiefs’ Council spokesperson said forces would continue to encourage “voluntary compliance” but would enforce regulations and issue fines where appropriate, the BBC reported.

“Officers will engage with individuals to establish their circumstances, using their discretion wherever it is reasonable to do so.”

Meanwhile, the Health Service Journal, a news service which covers policy and management in the NHS in England, reported that the office of England’s Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, feared the move would put people off from being tested.

A spokesman for the British Medical Association, which represents doctors in the UK, also said the test-and-trace system needed “the full confidence of the public” to be effective.

The UK has so far reported a total of 725,292 coronavirus cases and 43,736 deaths.
