Congress, AAP pact likely for Haryana polls

Sources indicate that AAP has demanded 10 seats from Congress during talks between party leader Raghav Chadha and KC Venugopal

Congress and AAP have started seat-sharing talks for the Haryana assembly polls, which could lead to a continuation of the alliance they had in the state during the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year.

The Congress has formed a three-member committee, which includes the party’s screening committee chairman for the state, Ajay Maken, AICC in-charge of Haryana Deepak Babaria and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, for seat-sharing talks with Aam Aadmi Party and Samajwadi Party. Party general secretary KC Venugopal will oversee the work of the committee.

Congress sources said that the party is willing to give 3-5 seats to AAP and one to the Samajwadi Party in Haryana, which has a 90-member assembly.

They said the discussions with AAP follow the suggestion of party leader Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha. The sources said that during the Congress Central Election Committee meeting, Rahul Gandhi discussed the possibilities of contesting elections as INDIA bloc and said that the party should make efforts to ensure that the votes of the alliance are not divided.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh later welcomed the suggestion and said that a final decision would be taken after consultations with party chief Arvind Kejriwal.

“We welcome it. Our priority is to defeat the BJP. Our Haryana in-charge Sandeep Pathak and Sushil Gupta will discuss it and take a final decision and inform Arvind Kejriwal about it, and a decision will be taken accordingly,” Sanjay Singh said.

Deepak Babaria told the media that talks with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding the alliance are in the preliminary stage.

“We are exploring it. If there is any further development in the next 2-3 days, we will let you know,” he said.

Congress sources also said that the party has formed a sub-committee to take a decision on the pending seats in Haryana.

The panel includes Madhusudan Mistri, Ajay Maken and Deepak Babaria and will hold separate talks with the party’s three senior leaders in Haryana – Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Randeep Singh Surjewala and Kumari Selja.

The meetings with the three leaders are expected to take place on Thursday.

Party sources said that about 24 seats are in the pending list, and no agreement could be reached on these in the meeting of the Central Election Committee.

AAP sources said that there have been talks with Congress. They said that the party has demanded 10 seats from Congress. They said talks have been held between party leader Raghav Chadha and KC Venugopal. (ANI)

BJP expected to list of candidates soon

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to release the first list of candidates for at least 50 seats on Wednesday in the run-up to the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections.

The party sources said that the first list of candidates is expected to be released tomorrow.

“We will release the first list tomorrow on maximum seats. Though discussion on all seats have been done but we will release the of list of around 50 candidates first and rest will be announced later,” the source said.

Earlier in the day, a key meeting was held at around 7.30 pm at former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s residence in Delhi. The meeting was attended by BJP Haryana Election incharge Dharmendra Pradhan, election co-incharge Biplab Dev, State incharge Satish Punia, and state co-incharge Surender Nagar among others.

On September 2, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national President JP Nadda, BJP Haryana Election incharge Dharmendra Pradhan, election co-incharge Biplab Dev, State incharge Satish Punia, State Co-incharge Surender Nagar and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar met and held talks regarding the candidates.

Mann further said that AAP will form a team, contest elections and defeat the double-engine government in Haryana, which ruled the state for 10 years, as the people of Haryana want change…reports Asian Lite News

The Aam Aadmi Party announced that it will be contesting in the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana on its own. Th AAP had contested one seat in the Haryana Lok Sabha election in alliance with the Congress.

During a press conference that saw the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP MPs Sanjay Singh and Sandeep Pathak in Chandigarh, Mann said that the AAP has decided to contest the Haryana assembly elections with full force.

“The Aam Aadmi Party has decided that it will contest the Haryana assembly elections with full force. We have governments in Delhi and Punjab; half of Haryana touches Delhi and half of Haryana touches Punjab. The people of Haryana appealed to us, that’s why we came here. Haryana gave a chance to the BJP, Congress and all parties, but everyone looted. Now bring Kejriwal,” Mann said.

Mann further said that AAP will form a team, contest elections and defeat the double-engine government in Haryana, which ruled the state for 10 years, as the people of Haryana want change.

This time, AAP will be contesting in all 90 assembly seats in Haryana solo.

Speaking on the issues faced by the people of Haryana, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, “Unemployment is the biggest problem in Haryana… Agniveer Yojana is a betrayal of the soldiers of the country. Farmers are troubled in Haryana…What did the double-engine government give?… The demands of the farmers were trampled upon…Kejriwal will change the condition of Haryana. Today people have hope from the Aam Aadmi Party.”

Haryana is one of the eight states that will be holding legislative assembly elections this year. Currently, the state is ruled by a coalition government formed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). The Haryana Assembly Elections 2024 are expected to take place on or before October 2024, as the current Assembly’s tenure is set to end on November 3 this year. However, the election schedule is yet to be announced. (ANI)

AAP says new NDA govt will collapse within a year

AAP leader Sanjay Singh referenced past NDA governments that fell within short periods, suggesting the current administration will face a similar fate….reports Asian Lite News

Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Sunday predicted that the newly formed government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi will collapse within a year due to unmet expectations of the NDA’s constituents.

Modi was sworn in for a record-equalling third term, leading a 72-member Union Council of Ministers emphasizing continuity, youth, experience, and rewarding BJP-led NDA partners.

During a press conference at the Circuit House, Singh asserted, “This new government has a life of six months to one year. It will not last longer than this.” He referenced past NDA governments that fell within short periods, suggesting the current administration will face a similar fate.

Singh criticized Modi, saying, “He is not going to meet the expectations of the NDA constituents. He will continue breaking political parties.” He warned the TDP and JDU to appoint their own Speaker to prevent defections to Modi’s camp.

Along with Modi, senior BJP leaders including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, all ministers in the Modi 2.0 cabinet, took oath as cabinet ministers at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Last week, Sanjay Singh met Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav at his residence on Saturday and congratulated him on the historic victory of INDIA bloc in Uttar Pradesh.

Sanjay Singh said that the AAP will work together with INDIA bloc in the future to protect the Constitution and reservations. In the Lok Sabha elections, AAP gave unconditional support to the INDIA bloc in Uttar Pradesh and campaigned for SP-Congress candidates.

Due to the joint efforts of the constituent parties of the alliance, the BJP had to face a crushing defeat in Uttar Pradesh.

Singh had participated in many public meetings in support of SP-Congress in Uttar Pradesh. Along with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Sanjay Singh also campaigned for Akhilesh Yadav in Kannauj.

Apart from this, Singh also participated in many joint election meetings with Akhilesh Yadav. In Uttar Pradesh, the Aam Party has given unconditional support to the INDIA alliance, and Singh held joint meetings with Akhilesh Yadav in many areas for the candidates of the Samajwadi Party.

The result of the joint hard work of the constituent parties of the INDIA alliance has been that the Bharatiya Janata Party has suffered a crushing defeat in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. As an ally of the opposition alliance, India block, in the Lok Sabha elections, all the workers of the Aam Aadmi Party were constantly engaged in creating an atmosphere against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the electoral field.

The BJP got 240 seats and NDA has secured 292 seats out of 543 Lok Sabha seats.

The INDIA bloc has bagged 233 seats. Others have won 18 seats in the lower house of Parliament. The Congress secured 99 seats. Samajwadi Party got 37 seats, while Trinamool Congress got 29. DMK managed to win 22 seats.

UP, Bihar, Maharashtra get most ministerial slots

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have the highest representation in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new council of ministers, with significant representation from poll-bound Maharashtra as well. Uttar Pradesh, the largest contributor to the Lok Sabha with 80 seats, secured nine ministerial positions, including one Cabinet post. Bihar garnered eight ministerial positions, with four being Cabinet posts.

Maharashtra received six ministerial slots, including two Cabinet positions. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan each have five ministers. Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu secured three ministerial positions each. Odisha, Assam, Jharkhand, Telangana, Punjab, West Bengal, and Kerala each have two ministers.

Rajnath Singh is the only Cabinet minister from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat’s four Cabinet ministers include PM Modi, Amit Shah, Mansukh Mandaviya, and C R Paatil. Bihar’s Cabinet ministers are Jitan Ram Manjhi (HAM(S)), Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lalan’ (JD(U)), Giriraj Singh (BJP), and Chirag Paswan (LJP (RV)).

Madhya Pradesh’s Cabinet members are Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Virendra Kumar, and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Maharashtra’s Cabinet includes Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal. Tamil Nadu’s prominent Cabinet ministers are Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, with L Murugan as Minister of State.

Rajasthan’s Cabinet ministers are Ashwini Vaishnaw, Bhupender Yadav, and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, with Arjun Ram Meghwal as Minister of State (Independent Charge). Odisha’s representatives in the Cabinet are Dharmendra Pradhan and Jual Oram. Karnataka’s Cabinet members are H D Kumaraswamy and Pralhad Joshi.

Other notable Cabinet ministers include BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda (Himachal Pradesh), former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal (Assam), Annpurna Devi (Jharkhand), and Kiren Rijiju (Arunachal Pradesh). Haryana’s representatives are Manohar Lal Khattar, Andhra Pradesh’s K Ram Mohan Naidu, Telangana’s G Kishan Reddy, and Punjab’s Hardeep Singh Puri, who is a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh.

Ministers of State (Independent Charge) include Jayant Chaudhary (Uttar Pradesh), Prataprao Jadhav (Maharashtra), Rao Inderjit Singh (Haryana), Arjun Ram Meghwal (Rajasthan), and Jitendra Singh (Jammu and Kashmir). Kerala’s Suresh Gopi and George Kurian have been appointed Ministers of State.

‘AAP to fight Delhi assembly polls on its own’

Rai had also told reporters that opposition parties had come together in the INDIA bloc to take on the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls and there was no alliance for assembly polls…reports Asian Lite News

Aam Aadmi Party will contest the Delhi assembly elections on its own without alliance with Congress, party leader Gopal Rai said on Thursday, noting that the two parties had come together in the national capital only for Lok Sabha polls.

“This is clear from the very first day that the INDIA alliance was formed for Lok Sabha elections. As far as Vidhan Sabha is concerned, no alliance has been formed. AAP will fight elections with its full strength,” Rai, who is Delhi Minister for Environment said.

The two parties drew a blank in the Lok Sabha polls in the national capital with BJP winning all the seven Lok Sabha seats. While AAP contested four of seven seats, Congress put up candidates on three seats.

Rai had also told reporters that opposition parties had come together in the INDIA bloc to take on the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls and there was no alliance for assembly polls.

“It is clear from the beginning that the INDIA alliance was formed for the Lok Sabha elections. We fought Lok Sabha elections together but in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections, there is no alliance. We will fight the Vidhan Sabha elections together with the people of Delhi,” he said.

AAP and Congress are part of the INDIA bloc. While the two parties had an alliance in Lok Sabha polls in Delhi, Punjab and Gujarat, there was no alliance between the two in Punjab. Congress won seven seats in Punjab compared to three won by AAP which is in power in the state.

Assembly polls in Delhi are expected to be held in early 2025.  Congress could not win a single seat in the Delhi assembly polls held in 2020. While AAP won 62 out of the 70 seats, BJP secured eighth seats in the last assembly polls.

The announcement by AAP comes even as the newly elected Lok Sabha MPs have not taken oath and talks are being held among the INDIA bloc partners for better coordination to take on the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government. (ANI)

AAP’s Punjab dominance ends abruptly

The only saving grace for AAP was to win Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s bastion Sangrur this time…reports Vishal Gulati

In a humiliating defeat to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab two years after its landslide victory, its Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, set an ambitious target of winning all 13 Lok Sabha seats on Tuesday and won just three seats, with four of five cabinet ministers failing to secure victories.

However, it improved its 2019 performance when it managed to win a lone seat.

Instead, the main Opposition Congress, which was at the helm between 2017 and 2022, won seven seats, while Independents won two and the Shiromani Akali Dal won one seat.

The BJP, which has won two seats in alliance with SAD in 2019, was blank in 2024.

Except for minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer (Sangrur), all four ministers — Health Minister Balbir Singh (Patiala), Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian (Bathinda), NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal (Amritsar), and Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar from Khadoor Sahib — lost the elections. Also its three legislators lost the parliamentary poll.

Political observers told IANS that the party was banking heavily on its populist schemes, like the free power of 300 units a month to each household, free Aam Aadmi mohalla clinics, 43,000 government jobs, the repair of canals and the establishment of schools of eminence.

However, the only saving grace for AAP was to win Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s bastion Sangrur this time.

The Congress INDIA ally AAP, which had decided to go solo in Lok Sabha polls, won only three seats. The other AAP two candidates who won the poll were Malwinder Singh Kang (Anandpur Sahib) and Raj Kumar Chabbewal (Hoshiarpur- reserved).

In a last-minute bid just hours before the campaigning for 13 parliamentary seats come to an end, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal campaigned with the state counterpart for party candidate Hayer.

Ludhiana: Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal during an interaction with business associates, in Ludhiana, Tuesday, May 28, 2024.(IANS/X/@AamAadmiParty)

Both led a road show with the AAP candidate from Sangrur and appealed to the people to make Meet Hayer MP with record votes with a message: “If we have 13 MPs from Punjab, then all of them will become Bhagwant Mann’s hands and voice in the Parliament.”

Addressing the people, Kejriwal had said Sangrur is the home constituency of Chief Minister Mann.

“You have made him the Chief Minister. This time too, we have a lot of expectations from you. Therefore, make AAP candidate Meet Hayer win here with the highest margin.”

Surprisingly, in a setback to AAP in June 2022, just three months after coming to power, the two-time MP and former IPS officer, Simranjit Singh Mann, who has been demanding an independent homeland — called Khalistan — won the bypoll in the Sangrur Parliamentary constituency.

Speaking at the roadshow amidst the blistering heat wave, Kejriwal had said: “You elect us with a record majority in the assembly elections. You gave 92 out of 117 MLAs to the Aam Aadmi Party. Now strengthen us in the Lok Sabha, so that we can easily get Punjab’s work done from the central government and get all the pending funds of Punjab released”.

State Chief Minister Mann had appealed to the people and said in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections: “You made me win by about 2.14 lakh votes. I will be very happy when you break that record and make Meet Hayer win by 2.5 lakh votes. Then we will be able to work with more hard work and dedication.”

Bhagwant Mann represents the Dhuri Assembly seat, while his Cabinet minister, Meet Hayer, is a legislator from Barnala — both seats are part of the Sangrur Parliamentary constituency.

Meet Hayer defeated Congress nominee Sukhpal Singh Khaira, the legislator from Bholath in Kapurthala, by a margin of 172,560 votes.

The outgoing MP Simranjit Singh Mann, who had won this Parliamentary seat in 1999, finished runner up with a margin of 176,839 votes.

Banking on rural electorates, he was mainly raising issues concerning the Sikhs and is strict with the idea of Khalistan, a separate state.

From this seat, the former legislator and businessman Arvind Khanna was BJP’s candidate, while Shiromani Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Badal fielded former legislator Iqbal Singh Jhundan.

The former lost by a margin of 235,832 votes, while the latter by 3,01,597 votes.

In 2019, Bhagwant Mann was the lone AAP MP in Parliament and he had defeated the then Congress candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon by more than 1.1 lakh votes from Sangrur.

The by-poll for Sangrur was necessitated following the resignation of Bhagwant Mann, who won the Assembly election in February from the Dhuri constituency and became the Chief Minister.

In the 2022 Punjab Assembly poll, AAP notched a stupendous victory, winning 92 out of the 117 Assembly seats.

Sonia urges Delhi to vote for Cong, AAP

Former Congress says that every vote cast in favour of the Congress and its INDIA ally would result in better job creation and women empowerment…reports Asian Lite News

Ahead of the much-anticipated polling for the Lok Sabha in the national capital on May 25, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday urged the voters of Delhi to ensure victory for the party candidates and those put up by its INDIA bloc ally, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in what she claimed were “very important elections to save democracy and the Constitution”.

In a personalised video address to voters in the national capital on Thursday, ahead of polling for the penultimate phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, Sonia said that every vote cast in favour of the Congress and its INDIA ally would not result in better job creation but also help empower women.

“These are very important elections. These are elections to save our democracy as well as the country’s Constitution. The polls are being fought on issues such as unemployment, inflation, and the attack on our institutions and constitutional bodies. You have to play your part in this fight,” the Congress stalwart said in an impassioned video address to voters in the Capital.

“Every vote that you cast will help in the generation of employment opportunities while also reducing inflation, empowering women and creating an India where every citizen is treated as an equal. These elections are not just about equality but also the bright futures of our citizens. I urge you all to ensure the victory of candidates of the Congress and the INDIA bloc by big margins in all seven Lok Sabha seats in the Capital,” the former Congress president and Lok Sabha MP from Raebareli said.

Voting for all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi will be held in a single phase on May 25.

As per a seat-sharing alliance that the ruling AAP and the Congress sealed for the Lok Sabha elections in the national capital, the former will contest four seats, including the prestigious New Delhi constituency, while setting aside the remaining three for the Congress.

Significantly, in a first for electoral politics in the country, the Congress has not put up a candidate in the prestigious New Delhi constituency, which would mean that all members of the party’s first family will vote for the AAP’s candidate for the constituency, Somnath Bharti.

However, with less than 48 hours left for polling in the national capital, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and AAP supremo and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are not scheduled to hold any joint roadshow for the INDIA candidates.

Headlining a massive public meeting in Delhi’s Dwarka earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi came out all guns blazing at the INDIA bloc, listing out the differences in governance styles of the previous Opposition regimes at the Centre and that of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

He said the sole ‘agenda’ of the Congress and its ‘INDI partners’ was to cater to their families.

Delhi turns into a fortress

Given the voting for the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 25, security has been beefed up in the national capital.

“In Shahdara, there are 166 polling stations and 827 polling booths. Staff has been appointed as per the guidelines of the Election Commission. A staff of 2500 will be on duty that day… The staff was briefed on May 20 and today… Drones will be used at sensitive polling booths…” said Additional DCP Vishnu Kumar Sharma.

As the mercury is on a constant rise in the national capital, the Additional DCP said that it is expected that the temperature might rise to 45 degrees Celsius. “Glucose and ORS have been distributed to the staff and they have been told that they must also carry necessary things with them to protect from heatwave,” he added.

Delhi is undergoing voting in a single phase on all seven Lok Sabha seats on May 25, with a fierce contest between the BJP and the INDIA bloc, comprising the AAP and Congress.

The Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress are fighting the elections in alliance in the national capital, with the AAP contesting four and the Congress three seats.

The seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi are Chandni Chowk, East Delhi, New Delhi, North East Delhi, North West Delhi, South Delhi, and West Delhi.

Notably, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Saturday that a total of 889 candidates from eight States and Union Territories (UTs) will contest elections in 58 constituencies. The voting will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 6 p.m.

The 2024 general elections are held in India in seven phases, from April 19 to June 1, to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The results will be announced on June 4. (ANI)

AAP leaders booked for protest near BJP HQ

Police said no permission was sought by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg…reports Asian Lite News

The Delhi Police on Monday booked Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders a day after they staged a protest which was led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal towards the BJP headquarters here without permission, officials said.

Police said that Section 144 of the CrPC was implemented near the BJP headquarters on Sunday after Kejriwal’s call for a protest march as no permission was sought by AAP at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg.

“A case under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Indraprastha Estate police station,” said a senior police official.

On Sunday, the AAP workers led by Kejriwal marched toward the BJP headquarters and sat in front of the 10-foot barricades erected by the police to block them.

However, the protest ended after just 20 minutes, and all the leaders, including CM Kejriwal, returned to the party office.

Before the protest march, Kejriwal had accused the BJP of orchestrating “Operation Jhadu” to suppress the AAP.

To prevent any incidents and maintain order during the protest, the Delhi Police had deployed a significant number of officials and paramilitary personnel.

AAP faces ED heat

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has unearthed a Rs 7.08 crore alleged foreign donation scandal involving the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which violated FCRA and election guidelines by manipulating the donor identities.

Sources said this amount was raised in violation of the provisions of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010, and the Representation of the People Act, 1951, by concealing, mis-declaring and manipulating the identities and nationalities of foreign donors as well as several other facts relating to foreign donations.

According to the sources, the ED during its investigation found several instances of irregularities in the collection of foreign funds by the AAP and its leaders, as it accused some of them, including AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak, of siphoning off the funds collected during a fund-raising event in Canada in 2016 for personal benefits.

The ED has substantiated the allegations through the contents of e-mails exchanged between various AAP volunteers and functionaries, including Aniket Saxena (Coordinator of AAP Overseas India), Kumar Vishwas (then Convenor of AAP Oversea India), Kapil Bhardwaj (AAP member), and Pathak.

The investigation so far has revealed that not only amounts were collected through fund-raising campaigns in the US and Canada, and the identities of the actual donors were concealed to circumvent the restrictions imposed under FCRA on donations by foreign citizens to a political party, but an analysis of the data of foreign donations also revealed that multiple donors used the same passport numbers, e-mail IDs, mobile numbers, and credit card details for donations.

“The ED has shared all the information with the Union Home Ministry relating to its investigations, including the details of the donors such as names, country, passport number, amount donated, mode of donation, bank account details of the receiver, billing name, billing address, billing telephone numbers, e-mail, time and date of donation, and the payment gateways used, etc., which were gathered during the investigation under PMLA,” the sources said.

The agency has also gathered materials relating to the donations through e-mail IDs and mobile numbers of Canadian nationals.

“The FCRA violation and other irregularities in receiving foreign funds by the AAP emerged during the investigation in a case registered in Punjab’s Fazilka district against an international drugs cartel involved in smuggling of heroin from Pakistan through the barbed fencing on the Indo-Pak border,” said the sources.

In this connection, a special court in Fazilka issued a summons to then AAP MLA from Bholath, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, to face the trial as an accused.

During the ED investigation, searches were conducted at the residential premises of Khaira and his associates, which resulted in the seizure of incriminating documents containing details of foreign donations (four type-written pages containing a list of donors in the US, and eight hand-written pages of a diary).

The ED alleged that the scrutiny of the seized documents revealed the receipt of foreign donations amounting to $1,19,000.

Khaira in his statement claimed that the foreign funding of $1,19,000 was raised during overseas fund-raising campaigns in the US organised by the AAP in April-May 2015, ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections in Punjab.

The ED said that in this context, Pankaj Gupta, the national secretary of AAP, was summoned, who admitted that AAP received foreign donations either through cheque or through the online mode.

“The investigation also revealed that AAP set up a body — AAP Overseas lndia — along with volunteers in countries like the US, Canada, Australia etc., whose primary task was to mobilise foreign funds for AAP in India.

It also revealed that a target of overseas donations of Rs 50 crore was fixed for these volunteers in 2016,” the sources said.

Donations totalling Rs 51,15,044 were received using e-mail IDs and mobile numbers of 19 Canadian nationals, as per the ED probe.

However, the names of these Canadian nationals were not reflected correctly in the records, the sources said.

Instead, different names were mentioned against these donations, which was done intentionally by the AAP to hide donations by foreign nationals, which are in violation of Section 3 of FCRA, and Section 298 of the Representation of the People Act, the sources said.

‘Earlier I was ‘Lady Singham’, now a ‘BJP agent?’

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal said on Monday that until she filed a complaint against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s former PS Bhibav Kumar, she was the ‘Lady Singham’ and today she has become a ‘BJP agent’.

“Since yesterday, Delhi ministers are spreading lies that an FIR has been filed against me for corruption, hence I did all this on the instructions of the BJP. The FIR was lodged eight years ago in 2016, after which both the CM and the L-G appointed me as the Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women twice. The case was completely fake on which the high court put a stay for 1.5 years,” Maliwal wrote in a detailed post on X.

In 2016, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) filed a charge sheet against Maliwal, accusing her of making unlawful appointments in the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and alleging that she showed favouritism towards AAP workers.

“According to them, until I filed a complaint against Bibhav Kumar, I was ‘Lady Singham’ and today I have become a BJP agent,” Maliwal asked.

“The entire troll army was deployed against me just because I spoke the truth. Everyone in the party is being called and told to send Swati’s personal video if they have one, as it has to be leaked. They’re putting my relatives’ lives in danger by tweeting their details, including their car numbers,” she alleged.

“Well, lies don’t last long. But in the intoxication of power and in the passion to bring someone down, it should not happen that when the truth comes out, you are not able to look even your family in the eye. I will take you to court for every lie you spread,” she wrote.

Last week, Maliwal filed an FIR against Bibhav Kumar for allegedly assaulting her when she had gone to meet Arvind Kejriwal at his residence in Delhi’s Civil Lines area on May 13. The police have taken Kumar into custody.

Relief for Kejriwal: SC Orders Interim Bail Until June 1

The AAP chief was arrested on March 21 and has been in custody since then….reports Asian Lite News

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal received a major relief as the Supreme Court ordered his release on interim bail until June 1 in the excise policy case.

A bench presided over by Justice Sanjiv Khanna said that the AAP supremo will have to surrender on June 2.

The Bench, also comprising Justice Dipankar Datta, said that a detailed order containing reasons for the decision will be uploaded later in the evening.

On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed the grant of interim relief saying that a politician can claim no “special status” higher than that of an ordinary citizen and is as much liable to be arrested and detained for committing offences as any other citizen.

The affidavit filed by ED’s Deputy Director stated that there is no principle that justifies giving differential treatment to a politician for campaigning over a farmer or a businessman who wishes to pursue his vocation.

No political leader has been granted interim bail for campaigning even though Kejriwal is not the contesting candidate, said the affidavit, adding that even a contesting candidate is not granted interim bail for his own campaigning if he is in custody.

The ED contended that around 123 elections have taken place in the last five years and if interim bail is to be granted for campaigning, no politician can be arrested or sent to judicial custody since elections are all year-round phenomena.

In earlier hearings, the top court indicated that it may consider granting interim bail to the AAP leader in view of the ongoing general elections. It said this is an extraordinary situation and it is not that CM Kejriwal is a habitual offender.

Kejriwal had moved the apex court against the Delhi High Court’s April 10 judgment, which dismissed his plea challenging the ED arrest.

The AAP chief was arrested on March 21 and has been in custody since then.

Poll panel warns Akali Dal, AAP

AAP had lodged a complaint with the poll panel against Sukhbir accusing him of violating ECI directions by making A child raise slogans in favour of his party during election campaigning…reports Asian Lite News

Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Thursday took decisive action against political parties found in violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Following directives from the Election Commission of India (ECI), warnings have been issued to both the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for their respective transgressions.

One of the key infractions involved the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) utilizing the derogatory phrase “Delhi ke Dalal” in a campaign video targeting AAP’s state convener and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, as well as AAP candidates. Such language, deemed inflammatory and violative of MCC guidelines, was promptly removed by the SAD after receiving the warning.

Additionally, the use of children in election rallies, notably during the campaign of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, has also drawn censure. Reports from Ludhiana’s Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer highlighted this breach, prompting a stern reminder from the electoral authorities regarding the prohibition of involving children in political campaigns. The SAD has been duly cautioned to adhere strictly to MCC guidelines henceforth.

Notably, AAP had lodged a complaint with the poll panel against Sukhbir accusing him of violating ECI directions by making A child raise slogans in favour of his party during election campaigning. The complaint alleged that Sukhbir had passed the microphone to the child and made him raise slogans of ‘Shiromani Akali Dal Zindabad’ and ‘Vote for Akali Dal’ during his ‘Punjab Bachao Yatra’ at Raikot on April 6.

Meanwhile, the ruling AAP also faced reprimand for its online content, notably posts and videos such as ‘Unsacred Games of Punjab’. Such materials were flagged for their potential to incite discord or violate the MCC.

Furthermore, the casteist remarks attributed to the state Cabinet Minister and AAP’s candidate from Khadoor Sahib Laljit Singh Bhullar were condemned as clear violations of electoral conduct standards. Reports from Tarn Taran Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer corroborated these findings, leading to a formal warning issued to AAP.

Notably, on April 13, Bhullar, in his speech during his election campaign at Patti, allegedly ridiculed members of the Ramgarhia and Suniyar communities, calling them “Ghuli gharh”. Following this, complaints were sent to the ECI, against the Minister by both Shiromani Akali Dal and Ramgarhia Singh Sabha, Tarn Taran.

About a fortnight later, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had offered an apology for Bhullar’s “casteist remarks”. Following widespread condemnation, Mann had taken a firm stance during a campaign rally for Bhullar in Patti emphasizing AAP’s commitment to inclusive politics and stressed the need for Bhullar to issue an unconditional apology. Mann, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, had offered his own apology as the head of the party, reiterating AAP’s dedication to governance based on meritocracy and devoid of discrimination.

Both AAP and SAD have been directed to desist from further breaches of the mode code of conduct, and to conduct their campaigns in strict adherence to the guidelines set forth by the Election Commission of India. The warnings underscored the commitment of electoral authorities to uphold the integrity and fairness of the electoral process, ensuring that campaigns remain focused on issues rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric or unethical tactics.
