Adipurush : An uninspired account of a classic heroic grand tale

The songs by Ajay-Atul and Sachet-Parampara, and the background score by Sanchit and Ankit Balhara, is expectedly loud and spoils the viewing even more with decibel levels that create noise pollution…reviewed by Arnab Banerjee

Duration: 179 minutes, Director: Om Raut Cast: Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Devdatta Nage and Sanjiv Singh, Cinematography: Karthik Palani Music: Sanchit Balhara, Ankit Balhara, Songs: Ajay-Atul, Sachet-Parampara (Rating: **)

When disclaimers go beyond the perfunctory three-liners and go on to justify the inclusion or absence of some vital facts, rest assured the filmmakers have a lot to hide and explain, or maybe fear a backlash that might result in a disaster.

The disclaimer also says that the original names of the characters have been changed. That said, what’s a film made on such a grand scale without a minor controversy?

In any case, any hullabaloo helps in adding the right buzz to a film. The nth adaptation of the Indian mythological epic Ramayana, ‘Adipurush’, written and directed by Om Raut, produced by T-Series and Retrophiles, and shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, is a modern take, but, thankfully, the epic, time-tested tale has not been tampered with. One minute short of three hours, the film is full of tacky computer-generated graphics that come in the way of storytelling, but that’s not its only flaw.

The narrative takes off with Prince Rama, called Raghava in the film, on a 14-year exile to the forest urged by his father, King Dasharatha, on the request of his stepmother Kaikeyi. It focuses on his travels across the forests in the Indian subcontinent with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana.

Soon, it is time for the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana, the king of Lanka, and what follows is the war between Rama and Ravana.

One has seen many versions of umpteen legendary tales told with a lot of passion, each one aiming at a fresh approach, and that alone is the reason why most of their novel treatment becomes a hit. The producers and director are aware that they have to have a faithful adaptation and don’t digress from the storyline (thank God for small mercies!).

In this version of the Ramayana, not much on paper can be blamed. Neither the mythical theme, nor are any of the characters unreal. Prabhas, who plays Rama, is closest to doing justice to his character. The rest playing the fabled roles perform with either hyper-sensitivity or deadpan expression.

Saif Ali Khan as Ravana wants to have fun, and roars “Ha … hahaha” the loudest, but looks most unconvincing in his anglicised Hindi. With the help of technology, he is made to look larger than his five-feet-something frame, helping him tower over all characters.

To woo North Indian Hindi speaking audiences, Rama’s voice has been dubbed by Sharad Kelkar, which is half the performance. Rama here is as affable as possible, but he can be fiercely determined as well, leaving no stone unturned to accomplish his mission.

Kriti Sanon is unsure of what she is supposed to be doing; her tall frame and inexpressive impassive face is a distraction. It is the same Krito who was so impressive in ‘Mimi’ last year. And like the other actors, she is not helped by the fact that she has to deliver unimaginative, almost prosaic, lines that sometimes are laughable.

Adipurush.

What is missing is the divinity one looks for in such films. There are many massive visual effects to enhance the effect of wonderment, but sadly, one is not overawed by any of this gimmicky flashiness.

Cinematographer Karthik Palani, though a competent technician, has to deal with too many colours, black and blue in particular, to make way for dazzle and amazement that the film demands.

The songs by Ajay-Atul and Sachet-Parampara, and the background score by Sanchit and Ankit Balhara, is expectedly loud and spoils the viewing even more with decibel levels that create noise pollution.

At the end of the drama, one minute short of three hours, as Rama returns to Ayodhya, it is

a real test of patience to even wait for the credits to roll. So bored one is of the deadpan and uninspired account of a classic heroic grand tale!

‘Adipurush’ sparks row in Nepal

The Nepal Film Union has urged all the cinema halls in Kathmandu to stop showing ‘Adipurush’…reports Asian Lite News

Cinema halls across Kathmandu on Friday stopped the screening of ‘Adipurush’, a day after Mayor Balen Shah warned that no Indian movie will be allowed in the Nepal capital if the film based on the Hindu epic Ramayana does not correct the “mistake” about the birthplace of Sita.

The Nepal Film Union has urged all the cinema halls in Kathmandu to stop showing ‘Adipurush’ and urged theatres outside the capital to release it only after assessing the security situation.

In a tweet on Thursday, the Mayor said that in ‘Adipurush’, it is mentioned that “Sita is the daughter of India”. He added that until this mistake will not be corrected in India and Nepal, no Indian movie will be allowed to be shown within the Kathmandu metropolitan city limit.

The film is written and directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages, the film has courted controversy in India as well.

In a statement, Nepal’s QFX Cinemas said: “Keeping the security of our viewers, QFX is not going to show ‘Adipurush’… We are waiting for the government’s decision. As soon as this issue is resolved, we will issue another notice and apologise for the inconvenience to our viewers.”

Nepal’s Censor Board also decided to hold back permission to the upcoming Indian epic mythological film, based on the Hindu epic “Ramayana”, for the same reason.

Sita was born in Nepal’s Janakpur and Lord Rama came and married her, as per the Ramayana.

Besides Mayor Balen Shah, some sister organisations of various political parties have also protested against the film and warned that they will not allow the screening until the filmmakers correct the mistakes regarding the birthplace of Sita.

This is not the first time that Mayor Shah ratcheted up the nationalist planks.

Mayor Shah on June 8 placed the map of Greater Nepal in his chamber to counter the Indian “Akhand Bharat” map placed in the new Parliament building.

The main opposition, CPN-UML has demanded to send a diplomatic note to India to protest the “Akhand” map.

‘Adipurush’ final trailer launched; hints at ‘epic battle’

The trailer is laced with long dialogues that suit its universe but might not hold the audience’s attention for too long…reports Asian Lite News

The new trailer of the upcoming film ‘Adipurush’ was unveiled recently at Tirupati.

The trailer is 2 minutes and 24 seconds in length and opens with Saif Ali Khan’s character of Ravan abducting Kriti Sanon’s character of Janaki as Prabhas’s Ram challenges Ravan saying: “Aa raha hoon nyaay ke 2 pairon se anyay ke 10 sir kuchalne (I’m coming for you to battle out the injustice with the justice).”

It then presents a full blown saga of a battle. Raghav and the Vanar Sena embark on an extraordinary journey to bring back Janaki. The VFX however, comes across as a bit disappointing as the animated characters look far from real. The rotoscopy seems amateure and so does the rendering.

What does stand out in the trailer and builds the anticipation is the terrific background score by the music director duo Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara, who have earlier delivered the background score of the Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff-starrer 2019 blockbuster ‘War’.

The trailer is laced with long dialogues that suit its universe but might not hold the audience’s attention for too long.

‘Adipurush’, directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar, Om Raut, Prasad Sutar, and Rajesh Nair of Retrophiles, Pramod and Vamsi of UV Creations, is scheduled to release worldwide on June 16, 2023.

Ram Siya Ram high on emotions

After ‘Jai Shri Ram’, the makers of ‘Adipurush’ have unveiled ‘Ram Siya Ram’, or The Soul of Adipurush, song featuring lead stars Prabhas and Kriti Sanon.

The T-Series official handle released the single on social media, and it said: “The soul of Adipurush, Ram Siya Ram #RamSiyaRam full song out now — #Adipurush in cinemas worldwide on 16th June.”

Adipurush.

Penned by Manoj Muntashir Shukla and composed and crooned by Sachet and Parampara Tandon. ‘Ram Siya Ram’ is a soulful track that celebrates the emotional bond between Lord Rama and Sita and also features a couple of intense and emotional dialogues. The song is accompanied by visually stunning footage.

‘Adipurush’ is an mythological film based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. The film is written and directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles. It also has Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh and Devdatta Nage in pivotal roles.

‘Adipurush’ anthem ‘Jai Shri Ram’

The first song of the Prabhas and Kriti Sanon-starrer Adipurush — ‘Jai Shri Ram’ — was firstly released by the award-winning music composer duo Ajay and Atul Gogavale, better known as Ajay-Atul, with a live orchestra.

At the launch, the duo mentioned how a magical power was with them while they composed this anthemic number. The launch of the song with a 30-member chorus along with Ajay-Atul was indeed an uplifting experience.

The duo, incidentally, have composed the music or written songs for an impressive array of films and TV serials in Hindi and Marathi, notably ‘Tumbbad’, ‘Zero’, ‘Super 30’, ‘Panipat’, ‘Tanhaji’ (helmed by ‘Adipurush’ director Om Raut) and most recently, Riteish Deshmukh’s ‘Ved’.

Speaking at length about the journey of the song, Ajay said: “The inspiration of this song is the name of the song itself. This was the first song we composed for the film.

“When the film was offered to us, we were told about its scale. As soon as we heard the name of Shri Ram, that power and devotion automatically came to us. This magical power was with us while we were composing the song.”

Sunny Singh excited to do’ mythological’

“‘Adipurush’ will mark my first Pan India Film. I can’t express in words how happy I was when I was offered this film,” he says…reports Asian Lite News.

Adipurush is one of the most awaited films in 2021. Actor Sunny Singh has been cast as Lakshman in “Adipurush”, the new Bollywood interpretation of the “Ramayan”. He says he is excited to play a mythological character for the first time.

The film stars Prabhas as Ram, Kriti Sanon as Sita and Saif Ali Khan as Raavan.

“To play the character of Laxman on the big screen is going to be a very different experience for me as in the past I haven’t done a role in the mythological/period film genre. My past films have been commercial films but this one is different from all my other films,” he says.

Sunny has been part of films such as “Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2”, “Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety” and “Ujda Chaman”.

“‘Adipurush’ will mark my first Pan India Film. I can’t express in words how happy I was when I was offered this film,” he says.

He adds: “The background and setting of the film is that of ‘Ramayan’. People across India would connect to this as we all have grown up learning about the tale, so the overall impact is going to be grand, huge!”

Shooting in Telugu is also a different experience for the actor.

“As the film is multilingual, rehearsing and shooting in Telugu is a new journey that I embark on with ‘Adipurush’. The adrenaline rush is super high and I am absolutely loving the whole process,” he says.

The film has been directed by Om Raut, who shot to fame directing the Ajay Devgn blockbuster “Tanhaji” last year.
