Selfiee: Heartening for film buffs to enjoy an outing

Duration: 142 minutes, Cast: Akshay Kumar, Diana Penty, Emraan Hashmi and Nushrratt Bharuccha, Director: Raj Mehta. Cinematography: Rajeev Ravi. (Rating: **1/2)

An enraged Kumar blames Agarwal for stooping so low just for his 15 minutes of fame at Kumar’s expense. The misunderstanding between the two escalates into a feud played out in front of the entire country…reports Arnab Banerjee

Celebrities, particularly film stars, and their brush with the law are not uncommon. Famous people do have run-ins with the law, and some of them have even spent time behind bars. Some superstars rue the fact that the law is very often much tougher on them, but law enforcement agencies believe that celebs are not immune to the law and that all citizens must abide by it.

This week’s only release, ‘Selfiee’, attempts to raise the issue of well-known people riding roughshod over the law and getting away with lesser penalties.

Superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) enjoys the status of a demigod in the country. His cramped schedule doesn’t allow even a single day off, much to the annoyance of his doting wife (Diana Penty).

The couple had planned a month-long holiday in the US, where she wished to deliver her first child conceived through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Kumar is all set to finish the last leg of a film shoot in Bhopal before flying off, but the producer (Akashdeep) requests him to shoot the climax for which the star needs to drive a vehicle in a sensitive area maintained by the Army.

Now that isn’t much of an issue, but Kumar’s driving licence has expired, and therefore, he cannot be allowed to drive without one ASAP. He needs to obtain a new driving licence from the RTO, Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi), who happens to be Kumar’s diehard fan.

Not paying much attention first to something which looks like a cakewalk, Kumar refuses to come down from his privileged high horse and comply with the rules that require him to visit the RTO and do the needful. The inspector, who is delighted at the thought of meeting his idol, decides to take his young son to get a selfie clicked on the historic occasion.

To complicate matters, Vijay’s rival actor (Abhimanyu Singh), supposedly his childhood friend who’s had several flops in a row, and is desperately trying to make a comeback, tries hard to get Vijay into trouble so that his film career nosedives too.

Meanwhile at the RTO, Kumar is upset to see mediapersons thronging the office even before he reaches there to fulfil the formalities required for the licence. Some of the scribes begin to ask uncomfortable questions as to how Kumar was driving his car without a valid licence and canvassing for Safe Driving campaigns too.

An enraged Kumar blames Agarwal for stooping so low just for his 15 minutes of fame at Kumar’s expense. The misunderstanding between the two escalates into a feud played out in front of the entire country.

The premise of this 143-minute film is believable. A worshipped film hero cannot be above the law and must face the consequences of his actions. Agarwal is a commoner who not just adores but reveres his hero, but at the same time is a committed and law-abiding officer. Though the face-off between them seems exaggerated and too staged, it works as per the film’s theme.

‘Selfiee’ trailer

What doesn’t work is the script trying hard to highlight Akshay Kumar and his stardom. Even when his character is shown to be weak and losing his popularity, he is unnecessarily allowed to behave arrogantly.

Maybe, it justifies the superstar status of the character he plays, but on the other hand, it serves as a ploy to make him look both supreme and heroic. Hashmi, who has earned a respectable position as an actor over the past decade, having done away with his stereotypical romantic image that also won him the tag of the ‘serialkisser’, is consistently good as the simple, family-loving conscientious officer.

Director Raj Mehta, who is known to handle serious themes in a typical filmi manner (‘Good News’ and ‘Jug Jugg Jiyo’), cramming his narratives with masala and entertainment, lets you down by reducing all other supporting actors into buffoons.

Some of the situations, too, could have been far more convincing had they been dealt with some sensitivity. Instead, every serious tone is diluted with comic dialogues and characters who are imperfect, derailing the weightiness of some important developments. It had a good premise that could have been either hilariously written, or by adding thrilling moments between entitlement and the principles of the law.

Cinematographer Rajeev Ravi doesn’t have much at hand to improve the strongly marked laugh lines that Kumar tries hard to hide.

Writer Rishabh Sharma, too, must have had a tough time adding heft to the story credited to Sachy, though we all know that it is based on the 2019 Malayalam film ‘Driving Licence’ by Jean Paul Lal.

There isn’t much scope for songs in between what seems like a face-off between a hero and a villain, but there are a few that appear out of the blue — one of them being a a rehash of Anu Malik’s ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anadi’.

The film has been released in theatres and should be heartening for film buffs to enjoy an outing. If only it was worth the effort and the ticket prices!

Akshay’s ‘Cuttputlli’ a gripping adaptation of the real-life cases

Akshay plays Arjan Sethi, a dutiful sub-inspector who took an oath to keep the people of Kasauli safe…reports Asian Lite News

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar’s room in the upcoming film ‘Cuttputli’ had a wall, which had over 500 real newspaper clippings of real stories and faces of the criminals.

‘Cuttputli’ is based in a small town where a cop is in pursuit of the person behind serial killings plaguing a quaint town.

The film marks a scene where Akshay researches all the psychotic serial killers, sitting in his room trying to understand the mentality and the ideology behind the mind of the criminal. Akshay’s room had a wall that had around over 500 real newspaper clippings.

Speaking about the clippings and the scene, director Ranjit M Tewari added: “Akshay sir’s character – Arjan Sethi is obsessed with the crime world and the world of serial killing. He starts the journey as a character of a filmmaker in the Punjabi film industry, who is obsessed and has done research over seven to ten years to make a film on the crime world.”

The director added that when they were creating his character’s world – the house and the setting, was very important for the maker to give Akshay Kumar a space in which he feels part of character Arjan Sethi rather than anyone else.

“So therefore, we just dressed up the entire wall with newspaper cuttings and photographers of real people, so that he gets a feel to it while shooting, that he has lived this life, that he has been part of this life.”

Tiwari shared that the art department, production designers and ADs, all came together and decided to find the real images, and real newspaper articles written on them, so that they could setup the space to make him feel a part of Arjan Sethi as much as he could.

“So we decided to have them from archive, research and websites, find the real images of those times, whether it is Ted Bundy, or Seema Gavit, or Cyanide Mohan, all these people from India as well as from people abroad who are serial killers and real articles and put it up on the wall and when Akshay sir saw it for the first time before shooting, he was so so happy with the kind of detailing that went into building the foundation from where he could start shooting the film.”

Akshay plays Arjan Sethi, a dutiful sub-inspector who took an oath to keep the people of Kasauli safe.

Produced by Vashu Bhagnani and Jackky Bhagnani, Deepshikha Deshmukh and Pooja Entertainment and directed by Ranjit M Tewari, ‘Cuttputli’ unmasks the killer and decodes the mystery using Arjan’s skills to understand the psyche of the murderer.

Akshay loves experimenting with different roles

‘Bachchhan Paandey’ is action-comedy film directed by Farhad Samji. It also stars Kriti Sanon and Jacqueline Fernandez. It is a remake of the 2014 Tamil film ‘Jigarthanda’…reports Asian Lite News

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar says even though comedy is his favourite genre, he loves experimenting with characters and is in a constant chase for new things.

“Though comedy is my favourite genre, I love experimenting with different roles. I have a hunger for this, I constantly chase the new. So one could say I am a very greedy kind of a person when it comes to work,” Akshay said.

The actor’s film ‘Bachchhan Paandey’ is set to have its world television premiere on Zee Cinema on July 31. He says the movie is a “mass entertainer”.

Akshay added: “I’ve taken up a film like this after a long time. Not only does it sketch out the hero to be an unconventional villain but also, the whole film outlines a fresh narrative for the audience to just sit back and enjoy.”

Akshay’s co-star Arshad Warsi added that ‘Bachchhan Paandey’ is the kind of film he would definitely watch.

Arshad Warsi added: “It is light-hearted, with thrill, drama, and greatly written characters. Comedy is one of the most difficult genres there is; one has to have impeccable timing with the punchlines and sense of humour to make it look effortless. But my aim, always, is to get into the character so much that I make you forget who I am. I make you forget what my previous one was, and that works for me. It’s always a breeze collaborating with Akshay Kumar.

“He is a great person at heart. I think that is one of the reasons he just goes on and on and on. Everybody wants to cast him because he is absolutely trouble-free. Apart from that, Bachchhan Paandey also gave me the opportunity to work with beautiful Kriti Sanon. She is a joy to work with, so hardworking and extremely sincere.”

‘Bachchhan Paandey’ is action comedy film directed by Farhad Samji. It also stars Kriti Sanon and Jacqueline Fernandez. It is a remake of the 2014 Tamil film ‘Jigarthanda’.

MODHERA TEMPLE ROW: Rajputs Turn Heat on Gujarat Govt

Earlier, the Gujjars had declared erstwhile emperor Prithviraj Chauhan as the hero from their lineage and had even warned that the film’s release will be stalled if he is referred to as Rajput in the movie…reports Archana Sharma

The controversy that started surrounding the upcoming Bollywood movie ‘Prithviraj’ starring Akshay Kumar refuses to die in Rajasthan.

Taking forward the row over the lineage and caste of Prithviraj Chauhan, Rajput leaders have now targeted the Gujarat government for giving credit to Gujjar leaders for building the Modhera Sun Temple, which as per them, was built by Rajput royals.

Earlier, the Gujjars had declared erstwhile emperor Prithviraj Chauhan as the hero from their lineage and had even warned that the film’s release will be stalled if he is referred to as Rajput in the movie.

Meanwhile, the Rajputs rejected the claims and declared that Gujjars are trying to twist history.

At a press conference organised in Jaipur on Sunday, Mahavir Singh Sarwadi, the convener of Shri Pratap Foundation and the patron of Shri Kshatra Purusharth Foundation, said that a conspiracy is going on to declare national heroes like Mihirbhoj, Prithviraj Chauhan, Maharaja Anangpal etc. as Gujjars by connecting the Gurjar region with the Gujjar caste.

“The Gujarat government’s tourism department, which earlier said that the Modhera Temple was built by Solanki Rajputs two years ago, today tweets saying it was built by Gujjars and then deletes it.

“In Gujarat, the state government on its website has declared the state as the land of Gujjars and termed Kshatriya clans like Parmar, Pratihar, Solanki, Chauhan etc as Gujjars, whereas the fact is that even today the population of Gujjars in Gujarat is negligible and the Gujjar caste is not even mentioned among the notified castes. We have written a letter to the Chief Minister of Gujarat in this regard,” he added.

“Before Independence, the British tried to distort our history to prove their superiority and after Independence, the then political leadership also tried to distort our history. Myths were fabricated and they were proved and propagated with the help of power.

“The entire society has been suffering for decades. Over the years, this communal appeasement has turned into caste appeasement and our history is being targeted by the present political leadership to nurture it. Rajputs have made inconceivable sacrifices for this nation and since time immemorial, they have fought with the terrorists. History is our most valuable asset and every Rajput is susceptible to it. Those who encourage attempts to dispute the identities of our ancestors for their petty political ambitions, society considers this act as not only unfortunate, but a conspiracy against our society as a whole. We oppose every such conspiracy,” Sarwadi said.

Meanwhile, Mihir Army chief Himmat Singh Gurjar, replying to Sarwadi’s claims, said, “Whenever the society has been educated, it has seen its history getting rectified wherever it has gone wrong. This is also a reformation. Mihir Bhoj and Prithviraj Chauhan belonged to the Gujjar community. Rana Poonja was and will remain Bhil. People who came into existence after 13th century should not give history information.

The term Rajput, according to him, gained credence after the 13th century. Earlier, they were called as Kshatriyas, he said.

Akshay wants to do films with simplicity

I don’t have any burden… I don’t think about it. There is no pressure. I don’t want think about it also… I just want to think about what kind of films I am doing in the future…says Akshay Kumar

In his over a three-decade-long journey in Hindi cinema, superstar Akshay Kumar has been a part of many blockbusters and has given several iconic characters.

However, the National-Award winning actor does not think about burdening himself with the thought of competing with himself and says that he wants to do films with simplicity and not in complications.

Akshay has given some unforgettable characters to cinema such as Raju from ‘Hera Pheri’, Raj Malhotra in ‘Aitraaz’, Makrand “Mac” Godbhole from ‘Garam Masala’, Happy Singh from ‘Singh is Kinng’, DCP Veer Sooryavanshi from ‘Sooryavanshi’ and Sajjad Ali Khan from his latest release ‘Atrangi Re’ to name a few from a bag full of blockbuster hits.

Does it get pressurising to taking up the game higher every time he comes on screen?

Akshay in a chat said: “No, I don’t have any kind of thing which… For me, I don’t have any burden… I don’t think about it. There is no pressure. I don’t want think about it also… I just want to think about what kind of films I am doing in the future, tomorrow what shooting I have to go for, what role am I doing. I just want to think that. I want to do films with simplicity and not in complications.”

Akshay has his diaries full or next year. The 54-year-old star has several back-to-back releases such as ‘Prithviraj’, ‘Bachchan Pandey’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’, ‘Ram Setu’ and ‘OMG 2: Oh My God! 2’.

Akshay’s hard core drama in cop avatar

The scene where he is chasing Sikander Kher and lifts him onto a flying helicopter from a speeding motorboat is superbly choreographed…reports Troy Ribeiro.

Film: ‘Sooryavanshi’ (Running in Theatres) Duration: 145 minutes Director: Rohit Shetty

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Jaaved Jaaferi, Gulshan Grover, Abhimanyu Singh, Jackie Shroff, Sikandar Kher, Nikitin Dheer, Vivan Bhatena and Kumud Mishra (Rating: ***1/2)

With the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai as the starting point, Rohit Shetty’s ‘Sooryavanshi’ traces the terrorist activities of a militant group whose chief, Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff), remote-controls their actions from Pakistan.

How DCP Veer Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar), chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad, along with his team, prevent Hafeez’s sons and the sleeper cells based across India, who are galvanized into action to destroy India, particularly Mumbai, forms the crux of this film that extends to two hours and a half.

While the narrative is strongly reminiscent of Rohit Shetty’s earlier films in terms of flavour and feel, this one is unadulterated entertainment with action, drama, and even a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. There are trite moments when the unity of India and its secular fabric are forced down one’s throat, courtesy of DCP Sooryavanshi’s sermons.

The film, expectedly, belongs to Akshay Kumar, who with his commanding screen presence, credible action, and charisma, hooks the viewers as Sooryavanshi. He may not be offering anything new by way of histrionics, but there is comfort in his familiar style and his action scenes are a treat to watch.

The scene where he is chasing Sikander Kher and lifts him onto a flying helicopter from a speeding motorboat is superbly choreographed.

Akshay Kumar is ably supported by an ensemble cast of actors which includes Kumud Mishra as Bilal Ahmed, Vivan Bhatena as Vivan and Gulshan Grover as Kadar Usmani, all of whom perform well, enhancing the quality of the film. Abhimanyu Singh as Riaaz Hafeez, the key leader of the mission and Jackie Shroff’s son, delivers a strong performance. Katrina Kaif as Sooryanshi’s wife, Dr Ria, merely adds to the glamour quotient.

Sleek action and daring acts with cars overturning and structures being blown off characterize the film, in Rohit Shetty’s inimitable style. Of course, one must not stop to analyse or seek rationale, else disappointment sets in.

The dialogues are powerful, hard-hitting, and seem real in the given context, and at times even succeed in arousing a patriotic fervour.

The background score, with ‘Sooryavanshi’ pounding your eardrums when Akshay Kumar is on screen, is a bit overdone, but the rest of the music, especially ‘Tip tip barsa paani’ from ‘Mohra’, is a mellifluous experience.

Other policemen from Shetty’s cinematic universe — Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) and Sangram Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh) — also make an appearance. The duo is actively involved in the action, albeit a bit mindless and overextended, in the last 15 minutes of the film. Ajay Devgn is his usual self, although Ranveer Singh’s forced goofiness is a tad annoying.

In its entirety, ‘Sooryavanshi’ is a thorough entertainer and Rohit Shetty’s indelible stamp is etched in every scene. If you love hardcore action drama, this one is for you.
