Amit Shah’s Challenges as Home Minister: A Closer Look

Facing an extensive array of responsibilities, Amit Shah’s foremost challenge lies in implementing the new criminal laws…reports Asian Lite News

The newly-formed Modi 3.0 government has unveiled its ministerial portfolios, ushering in a new era of governance.

With the Big 4 assuming their ministerial roles, a blend of continuity and change characterises the administration.

Amit Shah has assumed the pivotal role as the Union Minister of Home Affairs (MHA) for a second consecutive term, underscoring a commitment to continuity in addressing critical internal security matters.

Here’s an overview of the challenges awaiting Home Minister Amit Shah.

Facing an extensive array of responsibilities, Amit Shah’s foremost challenge lies in implementing the new criminal laws — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

These laws are set to replace the antiquated British-era statutes such as the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.

With the Centre’s notifications indicating their enforcement from July 1, Shah has less than three weeks to ensure their seamless execution.

Another significant challenge facing Amit Shah is terrorism.

As the Home Minister, he is tasked with crafting strategies to counter the persistent threat of terrorism, especially in regions like Jammu and Kashmir where it is resurfacing.

A stark reminder of this challenge emerged when terrorists targeted a bus in J&K’s Reasi district on Sunday, leading to the loss of 10 pilgrims’ lives.

Addressing the ethnic violence in Manipur is yet another pressing task for Amit Shah. The northeastern state has been embroiled in ethnic conflicts for over a year now.

MHA must also remain vigilant against the threats posed by the Khalistani outfits, particularly given the recent events such as Amritpal Singh’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib, despite being incarcerated.

Singh’s electoral success could pose challenges for the security agencies, as he has been accused of promoting separatist ideologies in the recent past.

Also, restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir will be a top priority for the Home Minister.

Under his leadership, the Home Ministry must also guarantee violence-free Assembly elections in the region.

Mitigating cybercrime is another challenging task that the MHA has to deal with promptly.

Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah Lead New Cabinet in Modi 3.0

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar are also set to begin new innings at the Centre, as ministers in Modi 3.0…reports Asian Lite News

The swearing-in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his Council of Ministers at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday marked the beginning of Modi 3.0, the third straight term for BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu, this evening. Rajnath Singh was the second after PM Modi to take the oath, indicating that he would be the second most important minister in Modi 3.0. Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari were next in line to be administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Droupadi Murmu. JP Nadda, the incumbent BJP President also took oath and is now set to don a new role in Team Modi.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar are also set to begin new innings at the Centre, as ministers in Modi 3.0. The portfolio allocation is yet to be announced but the BJP is likely to keep the top ministries with itself including Defence, Home, Finance, and the External Affairs. The swearing-in ceremony saw many notable and luminary figures from all fields including the corporate world, business fraternity, entertainment industry and others. The presence of top leaders from India’s neighbourhood including Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay made for a memorable moment.

Other world leaders who attended the colourful ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan included Bangladesh President Sheikh Hasina, Vice-President of Seychelles Ahmed Afif, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Earlier in the day, PM Modi met a battery of NDA MPs, many of whom are likely to become ministers for the first time in Modi 3.0. The difference between Modi 3.0 and the previous two terms of the Modi government is the shift in power dynamics. In the previous two terms, the Modi government enjoyed an absolute majority on its own but this time, it required the support of allies to cross the magic mark of 272.

Amit Shah takes a dig at Akhilesh Yadav

The Home Minister said that if things were under the SP chief’s control, he would have fielded his family members on all the seats in Uttar Pradesh….reports Asian Lite News

Launching a scathing attack on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that if things were under the SP chief’s control, he would have fielded his family members on all the seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing a public meeting in Etah (Uttar Pradesh), Shah said that after the completion of two phases of the Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA bloc is not able to mark victory on a single seat.

“Akhilesh himself is fighting from Kannauj, Dimple Yadav is fighting from Mainpuri, Akhilesh’s nephew Akshay Yadav is fighting from Firozabad, Aditya Yadav from Badaun, Dharmendra Yadav in Azamgarh. If things were under his control, he would have made his family fight on all the seats in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

Amit Shah also pointed out that in the Samajwadi Party government, goons used to harass people, but in Yogi’s government, the law and order situation has improved.

“After two phases of election, Modi ji has done the work of winning more than a century of seats. The account of the ‘Ghamandiya’ alliance has not even been opened,” he added.

Further, lashing out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks that the BJP will end the reservation system, the Home Minister said that the latter is spreading lies in the name of backward classes.

“Rahul Baba is spreading lies in the name of backward classes. He says that if BJP wins 400 seats, BJP will remove reservations in the country. He doesn’t understand, that we had two full terms with an absolute majority to remove reservation, but Narendra Modi is a supporter of reservation. Today I will give you a Modi Guarantee that the SC, ST, and OBC reservation will neither be removed by the BJP nor will we let anyone else do that,” Amit Shah said.

Shah also recalled that it was Babu ji (Kalyan Singh) who took up the cause of the welfare of the backward classes and the poor but his government collapsed because of Mulayam Singh.

“But when Narendra Modi became PM, he left no stone unturned in the progress of the backward classes and the poor. Congress has always attacked the reservation of SC, ST and OBCs, but Modi ji has always worked for their upliftment,” the Home Minister said.

“80 crore people are coming out of the poverty line, three crore people have been given houses and gas connections are being provided to every house. Congress has opened a factory of lies,” he added. (ANI)

Amit Shah slams Chidambaram over his remarks on CAA

Amit Shah said that Congress wants to scrap the CAA just to appease their vote bank…reports Asian Lite News

Coming down hard on Congress leader P Chidambaram over his remarks on the Citizenship Amendment Act, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday that they have been fighting against Congress’ appeasement politics for years and the Congress should rise out of it and try to perform on the agenda of development.

Amit Shah said that Congress wants to scrap the CAA just to appease their vote bank.

“Since the 1960s, Congress has made appeasement politics its weapon to win elections. We had been fighting against this for years. Since 2014, PM Modi has set the development agenda among people and elections began in the country based on that. Congress is facing difficulty in contesting elections based on development; they have continuously lost elections. They want to go ahead once again based on appeasement politics. Chidambaram doesn’t say what the shortcomings of CAA are; he just says that they will scrap it. Why? Because they have to strengthen their minority vote bank,” he said.

He added further that Chidambaram’s intentions will never be fulfilled as the people have understood the Congress party well.

“BJP stands firm on its principles. We will not do injustice to anyone. We will do justice. But we will not do appeasement either. I don’t understand what objection Congress has to CAA. The CAA will not take away anyone’s citizenship; they are misleading people. They want to win elections by indulging in appeasement politics. I would like to tell Chidambaram that his intentions will never come to fruition. People have understood the Congress party well,” Shah added.

He emphasised further that CAA will remain and the three criminal laws will be implemented.

“Congress is neither going to come to power nor going to make decisions. I assure the people of the country that CAA will remain and three (criminal) laws will be implemented. Every citizen will get justice within three years; such a justice system will be ensured. Every refugee will get citizenship. There is no doubt about it. I would like to suggest that Congress leaders, who have lost elections several times, rise out of appeasement politics and try to perform on the agenda of development,” the Union Home Minister said.

Responding to the question on three new criminal laws, the Union Home Minister said that Chidambaram was a part of the committee and had given suggestions and even appreciated them.

“As far as three laws (criminal laws) are concerned, Chidambaram himself was a part of the committee. He had given positive suggestions several times and even appreciated them. The three laws will make the country’s criminal justice system the most modern in the world. Congress doesn’t want results in corruption cases. It wants justice to remain pending. But the BJP’s and Narendra Modi’s policies are clear: every citizen has the constitutional right to get justice in the least amount of time. We are dedicated to doing that,” Amit Shah said.

Earlier at a news conference in Thiruvananthipuram on April 21, P Chidambaram had said that if the INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre, it will repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the three criminal laws brought in by the by the BJP government. (ANI)

‘People of Delhi will respond to Kejriwal’s arrest with their votes’

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi minister Atishi emphasized the people’s support for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal following his arrest. According to Atishi, the citizens of Delhi see the charges against Kejriwal as unfounded and are prepared to express their dissatisfaction at the ballot box.

At the ‘Jail ka Jawaab Vote Se’ Sankalp Sabha held at Kondli constituency of East Delhi on Monday, Delhi Atishi said, “Hundreds of people from nearby areas came and, with one voice, they all said that the false allegations leading to Arvind Kejriwal’s imprisonment would be answered with their votes, by voting for the Aam Aadmi Party.”

Atishi highlighted the bond between the people of Delhi and Arvind Kejriwal, describing him as more than just a political leader.

“The people of Delhi are deeply saddened by Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest. For the people of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal is not just a Chief Minister, he is like a son, a brother, someone who has given the children of Delhi a good education, provided free bus travel for women, enabled senior citizens to undertake pilgrimages, and ensured 24-hour electricity.

“Today, the people of Delhi are standing with Arvind Kejriwal and will respond to his arrest with their votes,” he added.

Atishi’s speech was delivered as part of the election campaign in East Delhi, focusing on supporting Kuldeep Kumar’s candidacy in the Kondli constituency. The rally drew hundreds of attendees from nearby areas, who echoed Atishi’s sentiments about Kejriwal’s imprisonment and pledged to respond with their votes.

Meanwhile, on April 22 the Rouse Avenue Court declined a plea moved by Kejriwal, who Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Directorate of Enforcement in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, seeking direction to jail authorities to administer insulin and allow him to consult through video conferencing daily for 15 minutes concerning his acute diabetes and fluctuating blood sugar level.

However, the court directed the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) to constitute a medical board to examine Kejriwal’s health.

The Special Judge Kaveri Baweja while passing the order stated that directions are hereby passed qua the prayer of the applicant for the administration of insulin and also to ensure that the applicant is provided all the requisite medical treatment.

“Though it shall continue to be the primary duty of Tihar Jail authorities, who are stated to be fully equipped to take care of the health of the applicant, to ensure that all requisite medical treatment is provided to him in jail, however, in the event of any requirement for specialized consultation, the jail Authorities shall consult the Medical Board to be constituted by Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), comprising of a senior endocrinologist, diabetologist, as per the request made on April 20, already sent by DG Prisons,” said the Court.

‘Centre plans to pull back troops, revoke AFSPA in J&K’

Shah says the government has banned 12 organisations for their involvement in terror activities, designated 36 individuals as terrorists…reports Asian Lite News

Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the central government is considering pulling back some troops from Jammu and Kashmir and leaving law and order to the police.

In an interview with Jammu and Kashmir-based Gulistan News, Shah said the government will leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

“We have plans to pull back troops and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone. We are strengthening the police, who are at the forefront during the encounter,” Home Minister Amit Shah said.

“The troops will slowly and slowly go to the barracks. Such a design has already been formed. We have made a blue print of seven years,” he added.

The Home Minister also indicated that the government is considering revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in parts of Kashmir.

“We will definitely consider this proposal (revoke the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. The situation is being normalised. We are speedily considering this proposal,” he said.

The AFSPA gives armed forces personnel, operating in disturbed areas. An area or district is notified as disturbed under the AFSPA to facilitate the operations of the armed forces.

Reacting to the announcement, PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti, in a message on social media platform X said, “PDP has consistently demanded the revocation of draconian AFSPA along with a gradual removal of troops. It also formulated an important part of our agenda of alliance, which was wholeheartedly agreed upon by BJP. Der aayee durust aaye”.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also said that under the garb of Article 370, the youth were “pushed down the path of terrorism” in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is marching ahead with “peace” since its abrogation nearly five years ago.

“In Jammu and Kashmir, under the garb of Article 370, which was a catalyst for separatist ideology, the youth were pushed down the path of terrorism and were misused by Pakistan,” he said.

On the issues that have emerged around the reservation of SCs, STs and OBCs, Shah said for the first time, the OBCs of J&K have been given reservation by the Modi government and women have been given one-third reservation.

“OBC reservations have been made in the panchayat and the urban local bodies. We have made space for the SCs and the STs. Without reducing the share of the Gujjar and Bakarwals, the Pahadis have been given 10 per cent reservation. And special provisions have been made to accommodate the displaced people from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir,” he said.

The Centre is determined to ensure that these benefits percolate to the grassroots level, he said.

Shah claimed that National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti tried their best to create acrimony on these reservations but the people have understood their intentions now.

He asked why the NC did not give reservations to these people in the last over 75 years.

The home minister claimed Abdullah had left for England when terrorism was at its peak. Both Abdullah and Mehbooba have no right to speak about the issue, he added.

“The number of fake encounters that took place during their time has never been matched by any other regime,” he said.

Shah said in the last five years, not a single fake encounter has taken place. Rather, FIRs have been lodged against the people involved in fake encounters, he added.

“We will have a dialogue with the youths of Kashmir and not with the organisations that have roots in Pakistan. They are responsible for the deaths of 40,000 youths,” he said.

He said the Modi government has banned 12 organisations for their involvement in terror activities, designated 36 individuals as terrorists, registered more than 22 cases to stop terror financing and seized properties worth Rs 150 crore.

As many as 90 properties were also attached and 134 bank accounts have been frozen, he said.

“We have enshrined peace, and peace cannot be bought. Whoever wants to have a dialogue has to do so within the ambit of the Constitution,” he said.

Shah said the Hurriyat Conference has no place in the process of dialogue. He also made it clear that the BJP and the entire Parliament believe that the POK is an integral part of India.

“The Muslim brothers are also Indians and the Hindu brothers living in POK are also Indians and the land which has been illegally occupied by Pakistan also belongs to India. It is the goal of every Indian, every Kashmiri to get it back,” he said.

The home minister said in 2010, there were 2564 incidents of stone-pelting, which now is zero. From 2004 to 2014, there were 7217 terror incidents. That has reduced to 2227 from 2014 to 2023, and this is almost a 70 per cent reduction, he said.

Shah said the total number of deaths from 2004 to 2014 was 2829 and it has come down to 915 during 2014-23, which is a 68 per cent decrease.

The deaths of civilians were 1770 and has decreased to 341, which is an 81 per cent drop. The deaths of security forces decreased from 1060 to 574, which is a 46 per cent decrease, he said.

Amit Shah Aims to Quell Naxalism by 2025

He mentioned that the MHA should be flexible both in the allotment of funds as also its usage in the highly LWE-affected districts in Chhattisgarh…reports Asian Lite News

Observing that Left Wing Extremism (LWE) or Naxalism problem has been essentially confined to some pockets within Chhattisgarh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday stressed to eliminate the menace within the next three years.

Shah’s direction came while chairing a review meeting of the LWE situation in Chhattisgarh at Raipur. The meeting was attended by Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers as well as senior officials including Union Home Secretary, Director Intelligence Bureau, Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh, Director General of Central Reserve Police Force, and DGP of Chhattisgarh.

“He (Amit Shah) observed that on account of the combined efforts of the security forces and all the Central and State agencies, the LWE problem has been essentially confined to some pockets within Chhattisgarh. In this context, the Minister mentioned that these areas need to be freed from the Maoist menace within the next three years,” Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement.

In this context, Shah emphasised the need for a detailed roadmap to be drawn up by all the concerned stakeholders, particularly relating to the targeting of the entire ecosystem-sustaining LWE.

Further, the Union Home Minister directed the state police to fill up the remnant security gaps, ensure comprehensive investigations, closely monitor prosecution, choke finance streams and continue intelligence-led operations. He also stressed the need to review all inputs shared through the multi-agency center and operationalize verified inputs.

The Minister stressed the need for saturation coverage of Central and State Govt. schemes in LWE-affected districts and utilization of security force camps to ensure the benefits of these schemes in villages in proximate areas.

He mentioned that the MHA should be flexible both in the allotment of funds as also its usage in the highly LWE-affected districts in Chhattisgarh.

He also highlighted the need for a proactive and sensitive handling of all local grievances about bonafide entitlements. Subsequently, on the directions of the Union Home Minister, a detailed interaction was held by the Union Home Secretary with the Collectors and SSPs of the highly LWE- affected districts.

The Home Minister pointed out that the three internal security situations in J&K, North East and LWE have witnessed a significant improvement with a nearly 75 per cent reduction in violence and geographical constriction by nearly 80 per cent.

He also mentioned that the Armed Forces Special Power Act has now been withdrawn from close to 80 per cent of the areas in the North East. While appreciating the progress achieved in the fight against LWE, the Union Home Minister stated that there has been a significant reduction both in LWE-affected geographies and violence. (ANI)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to move the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in Rajya Sabha for its consideration and passage on Monday.

The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2023 seeks to reserve 33 per cent of seats in the Jammu and Kashmir, and Puducherry Assemblies for women. The legislation has already been passed in Lok Sabha last week.

According to the agenda released, the Home Minister will also move the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2023, which seeks to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The Bill was cleared in the Lower House on December 12.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is to move the Appropriation Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha today to authorise payment and appropriation of certain further sums from and out of the Consolidated Fund of India for the services of the financial year 2023-24. The Bill will be moved in the Upper House for consideration and return. It was earlier passed by the Lok Sabha.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala will also move the Appropriation (No.4) Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha today to provide for the authorisation of appropriation of moneys out of the Consolidated Fund of India to meet the amounts spent on certain services during the financial year ended on the 31st day of March, 2021, in excess of the amounts granted for those services and for that year. Meanwhile, several opposition MPs have given notices in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, seeking a discussion on the recent breach in Parliament security today.

Since two persons with gas canisters jumped into the Lok Sabha from the visitors’ gallery, triggering panic inside the House, the opposition lawmakers are demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue.

A total of 14 opposition MPs– 13 in Lok Sabha and 1 in Rajya Sabha– are currently suspended for the remainder of the Winter Session for creating a ruckus inside their respective Houses while demanding Shah’s statement.

‘World needs common strategy to fight security challenges’

Union Home Minister, in G-20 Conference, emphasised the need to devise common strategy to deal security challenges, from ‘Dynamite, Metaverse’ to ‘Hawala to Crypto currency…reports Asian Lite News

Addressing a G20 conference in Haryana, the Union Home Minister also stressed the urgent need for cooperation, both at the national and international levels, to build cyber resilience in an increasingly connected world while speaking at the G20 Conference on Crime and Security in the age of the Non-Fungible Token (NFT), Artificial Intelligence (Al) and Metaverse’. Apart from G20 members, nine guest countries, and two major international organisations, INTERPOL and UNODC, as well as various international speakers are participating in this Conference.

Shah also focussed on the requirement of adequate attention on cyber security in the wake of its economic and geo-political implications in this digital age. He said it is essential to strengthen the capabilities of nations and international organizations to deal with new and emerging, traditional and non-traditional challenges, including terrorism, terror financing, radicalization, narco, narco-terror links, and misinformation in a better way.

“The transformation of our security challenges from ‘Dynamite to Metaverse’ and ‘Hawala to Crypto currency’ is a matter of concern for the countries of the world. And all of us, together, have to devise a common strategy against it,” Shah added.

He said further that terrorists are finding new ways to perpetrate violence, radicalise youth and raise financial resources, and that new methods in the form of virtual assets are being used by terrorists for financial transactions.

Noting that the theme of India’s G20 presidency is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, Shah said it reflects the country’s cultural heritage. The theme is perhaps the most relevant in today’s ‘Digital World’, he noted.

He said the technology has transcended all conventional geographical, political and economic boundaries, adding, “Today we live in a big global digital village.”

“Although, technology is a positive development in bringing human beings, communities, and countries closer, there are also some anti-social elements and global forces, that are using technology to cause economic and social harm to citizens and governments. Therefore, this conference becomes all the more important as it can be an important global initiative towards coordinated action to make the digital world safer for all,” Shah added.

He said initiatives for ‘digital delivery of services’ have transformed India into a ‘Digital Nation’ within a decade. But at the same time, Shah pointed out, the possibilities of cyber threats have also increased.

“According to Interpol’s ‘Global Trend Summary Report’ for the year 2022, some of the cybercrime trends such as ransomware, phishing, online scams, online child sexual abuse, and hacking are posing serious threats across the globe. There is a possibility that these cyber crimes will increase manifold in the future,” he added.

In this context, Shah said, this summit is a new and unique initiative of the G20 Presidency. “This is the first conference on cyber security in the G-20. The G-20 has so far focused on digital transformation and data flow from an economic perspective, but now iit is very important to understand the aspects of crime and security and find a solution. It is our endeavor to stay ahead in the era of NFT, Al, Metaverse, and other emerging technologies by responding in a timely manner to new and emerging threats in a coordinated and cooperative approach,” the Union Home Minister said.

Greater focus on cyber security at the G20 forum can make a positive contribution to ensuring the security and integrity of critical ‘information infrastructure’ and ‘digital public platforms’, he added.

“Discussion on cyber space security and cyber crime on the platform of G-20 will help in the development of the ‘Intelligence and Information Sharing Network’ and will give a boost to ‘Global Cooperation’ in this field,” he added.

Shah further said the objective of this conference is to promote a secure and efficient international framework for empowering and securing ‘digital public goods’ and digital ‘ public infrastructure’ as well as optimally harnessing the power of technology. (ANI)

Amit Shah claims success in India’s war against drugs

The effect of our comprehensive and coordinated fight against drugs is that where drugs worth Rs 768 crore only were seized in 2006-13, it has increased almost 30 times to Rs 768 crore in 2014-22…reports Asian Lite News

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday applauded the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other organisations for their relentless efforts in the fight against drugs on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Shah said that in the last few years, the MHA has revamped the entire strategy to realise the PM’s vision of a ‘Drug-Free India’, and that the registration of cases against drug peddlers in the country rose by 181 per cent during the nine years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the policy of zero tolerance against narcotics adopted by the Ministry of Home Affairs is showing successful results today. One of the main pillars of this policy is the “Whole of Government Approach” of the Modi government, in which the coordination of different departments makes the policy more effective, he said.

In a video message, Amit Shah said, “On the occasion of the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’, I congratulate all the organisations and people fighting against drugs. It is a matter of great pleasure that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is organizing ‘Nasha Mukt Pakhwada’ at the all-India level this time.”

The Union Home Minister further said, “It is our resolve that we will not allow the narcotics trade in India, nor will we allow drugs to be routed to the world through India. In this campaign against drugs, all the major agencies of the country, especially the ‘NCB,’ are continuously fighting their war.”

To strengthen this campaign, the Ministry of Home Affairs established NCORD in 2019, and the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) was formed in the police departments of every state; the first national conference of ANTF was held in April 2023 in Delhi, he said.

Amit Shah said that the campaign against drug misuse and side effects is being carried out on a war footing at the national level through appropriate forums.

The effect of our comprehensive and coordinated fight against drugs is that where drugs worth Rs 768 crore only were seized in 2006-13, it has increased almost 30 times to Rs 768 crore in 2014-22.

“181 per cent more cases have been registered against drug peddlers in comparison to the earlier period. This shows the commitment of the Modi government towards a drug-free India,” said Shah, while adding that they also launched a destruction campaign to prevent the re-use of seized drugs in June 2022; under this campaign, around 6 lakh kg of seized narcotics have been destroyed nationwide.

The Union Home Minister also said that whether it is about destroying drug cultivation or spreading public awareness, the Ministry of Home Affairs, in coordination with all institutions and states, is making every possible effort for a “drug-free India”, but this battle cannot be won without people’s participation.

“On this occasion, I appeal to all my countrymen to keep themselves and their families away from drugs. Drugs not only make the young generation and society hollow but the money earned from their smuggling is used against the security of the country. I appeal to the people to take an active part in this war against its misuse and inform the security agencies about the drug-trade taking place around them,” he said.

Amit Shah also said that I am sure that with collective efforts, we all will be able to root out the problem of drugs and achieve our goal of a ‘drugs-free India’. I congratulate the NCB again and other institutions for their contribution in working towards the resolution of the Modi government, and I hope that we will not rest unless we win this fight against drugs.
