Kashyap Critiques Hindi Cinema’s Trend-Chasing

Throughout his career, Anurag has made the films he wanted to make, steering clear of the conventional norms of the Hindi film industry. He stands as one of the most successful independent filmmakers in the country today…writes Akshay Acharya

One might envision the Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap as a heavily guarded and serious individual, who is immersed in books and his signature library of DVDs all day long, with no hint of a smile on his face. While his cinema might partly contribute to this perception, the truth is far from it.

The filmmaker has a knack for humour, boasting a repertoire of “dad jokes and sick jokes”.

Anurag, in a conversation with IANS, said that he finds humour in the mundane.

He said: “I have a stock full of dad jokes, sick jokes and inappropriate (laughs). Humour is something that you have to find out which genre works for you, you can be good at clean comedy, slapstick comedy, or dark jokes. It’s on you to identify what you are good at and then keep practising it with your timing, your delivery, and the pauses. I find humour in everyday things, and I use it the way I like in my films.”

Throughout his career, Anurag has made the films he wanted to make, steering clear of the conventional norms of the Hindi film industry. He stands as one of the most successful independent filmmakers in the country today.

However, such success comes at a cost. Not every creation resonates with the audience immediately. Sometimes, a film gains recognition long after its theatrical release, labelled as a cinematic masterpiece or ‘a film ahead of its time,’ a phrase that Anurag refuses to acknowledge.

Anurag told: “For me, every film has a different reason to be made. It’s very easy for someone to say that, ‘You made a film which was ahead of its time.’ But, I made that film when it came to my mind. I’m not running ahead of time; perhaps the audience could be trailing behind. When you see films from France, Germany, Siberia, and Iran, you realise how far behind we are compared to them in terms of quality content.”

The director feels that Hindi cinema is largely still stuck in formulas. “Bahar log kamaal ki picturein bana rahe hain (People outside India are creating exceptional cinema),” he added.

But then, he corrected himself and came up with an even stronger example, that of the Malayalam film industry.

Anurag told: “The problem of chasing trends is major with Hindi cinema, I feel. Look at the Kerala film industry, they are really doing some great work. Let me tell you an irony. I saw ‘Manjummel Boys’, and wrote on Letterboxd (an online social cataloguing service for films) that nobody would have put their money on ‘Manjummel Boys’ in the Hindi film industry, but, if it gets a good response, people will do its remake.”

And guess what? It happened exactly as he had prophesied.

“The film was released, and after two days, I got a message from a producer asking if I knew the guys behind ‘Manjummel Boys’ because he wanted to remake the film in Hindi,” he said.

Anurag told: “If S. S. Rajamouli was a Hindi director, he would have never been able to make the kind of films he is known for. Having said that, I will say that I’m the most privileged indie filmmaker in the country because I get to make the films that I want. Other filmmakers sadly don’t get that chance to put their voices out there.”

He also pointed to the market being dictated by trends because of the hugely disproportionate screen count in India to its 1.4 billion population (the biggest in the world).

His upcoming streaming series ‘Bad Cop’, which is set to premiere on June 21 on Disney+ Hotstar, sees him in the role of an antagonist.

When asked if the genre of crime intrigues him as an actor as well, he said: “My life started with Fyodor Dostoevsky’s ‘Crime and Punishment’ at an age which was my most impressionable age. I have forever been in this world.”

“I read a lot of noir and crime fiction. There’s a certain intrigue about crime stories in the sense of what makes a person criminal and what pushes them to commit a crime,” he added.

Gulshan Devaiah and Anurag Kashyap Star in ‘Bad Cop’

Gulshan said he had a lot of fun working on ‘Bad Cop’ because it’s an out-and-out entertainer…reports Asian Lite News

Actors Gulshan Devaiah and Anurag Kashyap are set to star in the upcoming police-villain chase drama titled ‘Bad Cop’, a fictional series directed by Aditya Datt.

Also starring Harleen Sethi, Saurabh Sachdeva, and Aishwarya Sushmita in pivotal roles, the show features Anurag as the quirky villain Kazbe and Gulshan as Karan, a daring cop.

Talking about his role, Anurag said: “I have created a lot of characters that are gory, quirky, dark, and many more things, but believe it or not, it was difficult for me to be one. Kazbe is someone who doesn’t think too much before doing anything; he just does it. He is dreadful, eccentric, nefarious, and a quintessential villain.

“I had to bite into the intricacies of this character and make it my own.”

Gulshan said he had a lot of fun working on ‘Bad Cop’ because it’s an out-and-out entertainer.

“I am excited because it’s a very different kind of role for me. I played a different cop in another show as Devilal, but here it’s more like a massy-entertaining kind of cop. I was familiar with Aditya Datt’s style since I had worked with him before, he is very straightforward and wants to make an entertaining, cool show that people will enjoy,” she said.

Gulshan agrees the action sequences were challenging, especially the running, as he is not used to doing action and “I’m not physically built for it.”

”Moreover, it was enjoyable to perform with Anurag, who had only directed and produced my films earlier, but it was fun to do scenes and action with him. It was a great moment for me because I never expected to be acting with him.”

“I’m curious to see how people will enjoy my version of a filmy cop.”

Director Aditya Datt said he is “happy to bring a story which is classic, quirky, thrilling, and full of action.”

“It’s a hardcore classic cop vs villain chase, but with a fun twist that will leave you intrigued till the end. The series has high-octane action, and eccentric characters, and is a complete entertainer. Each character of the series has been crafted with utmost depth and detailing, played by some fabulous actors.”

Aradhana Bhola, Managing Director, Fremantle India, said: “We are excited to begin a brand new chapter in Fremantle India’s journey of content creation with our very first drama web series, ‘Bad Cop’.”

Anurag Kashyap starts penning his new script

This film is about young people finding themselves, finding love and also it portrays a total lack of unwillingness among the older generation to understand…reports Asian Lite News

After ‘Ugly’, ‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’ is filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s next film that has been solely written by him. The director got candid about his project and shared that how after discussing with his daughter, the idea for writing a story based on the concept of modern relationships came to his mind.

He said: “I’ve had the story idea brewing in my mind for a long time. I have always liked to explore relationships in the context of big cities, big towns, small towns, and middle class relationships. I was in conversation with my daughter and by the end of our discussion it hit me that it was important to explore struggles, challenges that the GenZ generation undergoes.”

The director, who is known for his films like ‘Black Friday’, ‘Ugly’, ‘Bombay Velvet’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Dobaaraa’, among others, shared further about working on the story of the movie after a detailed conversation with his daughter.

He added: “With that in mind, I set out to write the stories, fun, musical love stories with the help of Shellee and Amit Trivedi. We also improvised as we went along with the gen Z actors Karan and Alaya. It’s after a long time I have gone back to pen and paper and wrote a script. Actually after ‘Ugly’, something that originated entirely from me.”

This film is about young people finding themselves, finding love and also it portrays a total lack of unwillingness among the older generation to understand.

‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’ features ‘Freddy’ actress Alaya F and actor Karan Mehta, who marks his debut. Presented by Zee Studios under the Good Bad Films production, it is slated to release on February 3.
