Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday toured the 16th edition of Art Dubai, a leading global platform for art and artists from the Middle East and the Global South being held at Madinat Jumeirah from 1-5 March.

Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the UAE’s commitment to creating an environment that fosters creativity and supports artistic talent from all over the world to thrive. The country’s world-class infrastructure has enabled it to become a preferred destination of choice for creatives from around the world to showcase their artistic innovation at leading events that draw visitors from across the world, His Highness said.

The art fair is one of the key events of the Dubai Art Season, a comprehensive annual artistic celebration organised by Dubai Culture in February and March to celebrate the emirate’s growing creative and cultural landscape.

During the tour, His Highness was briefed about the exhibition’s key role in cementing Dubai’s position as a leading cultural and artistic hub and fostering collaboration with regional and international art institutions and global talent.

The VP was also briefed about this year’s extensive programme, which features a number of workshops, over 50 talks, and a diverse educational programme.

Highlights this year include the 16th edition of Art Dubai’s flagship Global Art Forum, the first Middle East edition of Christie’s Art+Tech summit, a series of Modern and Collector talks developed in partnership with Dubai Collection, and a new event in partnership with the Art Business Conference.

The VP was accompanied during the tour by Essa Kazim, Governor of Dubai International Financial Centre, organisers of Art Dubai, and Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, along with a number of senior officials.

Art Dubai 2023 is marked by a significant surge in the number of participating galleries.

This year, the event features more than 130 contemporary, modern and digital gallery presentations curated from six continents.

Art Dubai features galleries from more than 40 countries across four main sections: Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba (meaning gateway in Arabic), and Art Dubai Digital, including 24 Dubai-based galleries, the largest number to date, reflecting Dubai’s thriving artistic ecosystem. The event contributes to Dubai’s vision of consolidating its status as a global hub for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.

Art Dubai: A catalyst for creative economy

Art Dubai  has launched with over 130 galleries from more than 40 countries….reports Asian Lite News

Art Dubai has launched its most ambitious edition ever. The leading global platform for art and artists from the Middle East and Global South is being held at Madinat Jumeirah Dubai from 3rd to 5th March, with VIP previews on 1st and 2nd March.

Art Dubai’s 16th edition features over 130 galleries from more than 40 countries, across four main sections: Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba, and Art Dubai Digital.

The platform’s partner and non-profit programme, which includes newly commissioned works by renowned artists, is equally ambitious. Moreover, an expanded education and thought leadership programme makes this the largest and most comprehensive edition of the fair yet.

“Art Dubai has always tried to reframe what an art fair can be, and this year’s expanded programme fully reflects our role as a meeting point for the region’s creative industries, across the commercial and not-for-profit sectors,” Art Dubai’s Executive Director Benedetta Ghione said.

“As an independent organisation, we pride ourselves on being more than an art fair – we are an incubator of talent, a catalyst for Dubai’s creative economy, a convener of great minds, and an entry point to this vibrant ecosystem for the wider cultural sector.”

Art Dubai’s Artistic Director Pablo del Val added, “For nearly two decades, Art Dubai has been a place to discover and celebrate new trends, creating and facilitating conversations, and celebrating the strength of creative output across the Global South.”

“It is a truly global art fair, and this is reflected in both the quality and geographic spread of the galleries participating this year. That so much of the programme is once again drawn from the Global South highlights the increased interest in and appetite for collecting non-Western art, the strengthening of the gallery scene beyond the traditional centres of the art world, and the role Art Dubai plays as a platform for regions that are under-represented in international collections.”

The 2023 fair includes over 30 first-time participants and more than 60 percent of the gallery programme is drawn from the Global South, reaffirming Art Dubai’s position as the leading marketplace for art from this rapidly developing region.

Art Dubai Contemporary showcases the very best in cutting-edge contemporary art from 76 galleries in 34 countries, with an emphasis on art and artists from the Global South.

The 16th edition welcomes 14 debut exhibitors and 12 galleries returning to Art Dubai after a hiatus. Additionally, the fair will feature 24 Dubai-based galleries, the largest number to date, reflecting Dubai’s thriving artistic ecosystem and its growing significance as a global hub for creativity and culture.

The fair will once again feature Art Dubai Digital, which debuted to critical and commercial acclaim at the 2022 edition. This physical section of the fair offers an annual 360-degree snapshot of the digital art landscape, bridging the gap between the worlds of art and technology, and exploring how artists are utilising immersive technologies to push the boundaries of traditional art.

The selection is curated from six continents, reinforcing Art Dubai’s commitment to presenting global perspectives and diversity, inviting audiences to look beyond traditional art centres, and mapping out the key agents and platforms leading the way.

The expanded 2023 edition, curated by Singapore-based educator and arts writer Clara Che Wei Peh, will highlight the artists, galleries and institutions driving this fast-developing field.

Held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Art Dubai has announced details of the programme and partnerships for its 16th edition.

The expanded 2023 programme features an ambitious and multi-strand conference, talks and education programme, reinforcing Dubai’s emergence as a hub for art and culture and a significant contributor to global conversations about contemporary art.

The 2023 edition of Art Dubai will be held at Madinat Jumeirah from 3rd to 5th March 2023, with previews on 1 and 2 March 2023.

Art Dubai’s expanded 2023 programme, developed in collaboration with local and international cultural partners, reaffirms the premier art fair’s role as the meeting point for the Global South’s creative industries and communities.

“Art Dubai has always tried to reframe what an art fair can be,” said Benedetta Ghione, Art Dubai’s Executive Director. “This year’s expanded programme fully reflects our role as a meeting point for the region’s commercial and not-for-profit creative industries.”

“As an innovative public-private partnership, we have been an incubator of talent, a catalyst for the creative economy here in Dubai, a convener of great minds, and an entry point to this vibrant ecosystem for the wider cultural sector.”

“We are thrilled that our long-term partnership with Julius Baer will continue into a second decade. Their continued support allows us to provide the next generation of the region’s artists and arts professionals with incredible opportunities.”

Highlights of the 2023 programme include site-specific commissions and premieres by renowned international artists, presented in partnership with the region’s leading institutions.

The expanded programme continues Art Dubai’s long-standing commitment to thought leadership and supporting the development of Dubai’s cultural infrastructure.

The Artist Commissions for 2023 are themed around food, community, celebration and hope, with artists selected from participating Art Dubai galleries and South Asia’s leading institutions.

Julius Baer has renewed its association with Art Dubai as its lead partner for another five years until 2027. The Swiss wealth management group will premiere a newly commissioned artwork by Refik Anadol, the new media artist and pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence.

The commission will debut in Dubai as a part of Julius Baer’s new initiative, NEXT, which will encourage the interdisciplinary exploration of megatrends across the arts, science and technology.

Also debuting at the fair will be UAE First Immersion, a presentation of new artworks produced following the November 2022 visit to the UAE by some leading names in digital art.

The exhibit will be part of the expanded second edition of Art Dubai Digital, which will feature collaborations with various organisations pioneering new institutional models, including Lian Foundation and 6529’s Open Metaverse project.

Celebrating its 10th edition, Campus Art Dubai, Art Dubai’s flagship professional development initiative, will expand to incorporate placements with local partners, including Alserkal Avenue and Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai and 421, an Abu Dhabi-based emerging artists platform. With 421, the fair will present a new group exhibition curated by UAE-based artist and researcher Dania Al Tamimi.

The 16th edition of Art Dubai’s celebrated transdisciplinary conference Global Art Forum, commissioned by Shumon Basar, will explore the theme “Predicting the Present” and consider the central question: if it’s the end of history and the end of the future, what happens next?

The fair’s 2023 conference programme will expand to include the first Dubai edition of Christie’s Art+Tech summit.

The summit brings together regional and global leaders, innovators, artists, and visionaries to foster meaningful dialogues on the intersection of Art and Technology.

The sixth iteration of the summit—and the first in the region—will survey tech trends, hear from artists incorporating tech in their practices, and explore current and future challenges and opportunities.

Highlighting the role played by collectors and philanthropists in developing the region’s cultural infrastructure, Art Dubai 2023 will include a series of high-level Collector and Modern Talks, presented in partnership with Dubai Collection, the first institutional art collection in the city and for the city.
