AstaGuru’s upcoming ‘Dimensions Defined’ Auction will feature a meticulously curated catalogue of Modern Indian Art, presenting significant works by iconic Indian modernists. Each piece in the auction reflects the diverse and ever-changing artistic landscape in India over the past decades.

The curation offers an eclectic selection of works by eminent artists, including Jamini Roy, Amrita Sher-Gil, Rabindranath Tagore, M. F. Husain, S. H. Raza, K. H. Ara, F. N. Souza, Krishen Khanna, Ram Kumar, Jogen Chowdhury, G.R. Santosh, J. Swaminathan, K. Laxma Goud, Thota Vaikuntam, K. K. Hebbar, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Sakti Burman, Akbar Padamsee, B. Vithal, H. A. Gade, Satish Gujral and Manu Parekh amongst others. The selection also includes sculptural masterpieces by eminent artists such as Himmat Shah, Amarnath Sehgal, Dhanraj Bhagat, and Prodosh Dasgupta. The auction is scheduled for February 22-23, 2024.

Talking about the upcoming auction, Sunny Chandiramani, Vice President of Client Relations, at AstaGuru Auction House says, “We take great care to curate a collection that traverses decades, presenting the unfolding tapestry of Indian art through the masterpieces of renowned modernists. This auction offers a distinctive opportunity for art enthusiasts and collectors to procure extraordinary pieces, each narrating a captivating story of creativity and inspiration. The thoughtfully chosen artworks, including those by luminaries of the PAG generation, mirror the diverse and dynamic artistic panorama that has significantly influenced our cultural narrative.”

Adorning the cover of the catalogue is a beautiful work by S H Raza, estimated to be acquired for INR 1,50,00,000 – 2,00,00,000. Executed by S H Raza in 1977, this landscape is a fine example of the artist’s preoccupation with utilising colours as symbols. While his early landscapes, executed during the 1 950s, depicted several figurative elements, as time progressed, they appeared less and were substituted by expressionism. These vibrant bursts of colour were further enhanced by the palette and brushstrokes.

The auction will also offer a rare gem for collectors, a handwritten notebook by legendary artist and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The presented lot is a historically significant manuscript that details writings on Poush Sankranti, penned by Rabindranath Tagore in February 1930 at Shantiniketan. It is estimated to be acquired at INR 60,00,000 – 80,00,000.

Another unique inclusion is lot no 115, a large-scale copper plate triptych by M F Husain, estimated to sell at INR 2,00,00,000 – 3,00,00,0000. Since not many such sculptures are known to have been created by Husain, this unique work engraved with intricate design offers a great insight into Husain’s multifaceted artistic approach. Four wood-cut works painted by the artist are also a part of the upcoming auction.

Lot number 28 is a magnificent work by Akbar Padamsee, which he executed during an extremely vital transitional phase of his career. Executed in 1963, the presented work is among the abstracted landscapes that became a formative ground of Padamsee’s famous metascapes work. This lot will be offered with an estimate of INR  3,00,00,000 – 4,00,00,000.

Lot no. 70 is an important creation by artist Jagdish Swaminathan. Through this work, he incorporates a dimension of reality within the realm of his invented abstract world. This lot will be offered with an estimate of INR 2,00,00,000 – 3,00,00,000.

Lot no. 178 is a majestic creation by artist Thota Vaikuntam and captures the scene of a little Krishna gorging on butter in the artist’s signature style motifs and colours. A large-scale creation spanning ten feet, it is estimated to be acquired at INR 80,00,000 – 1,20,00,000.

A work by one of India’s most revered modernists V S Gaintonde will also feature in the upcoming auction. VS Gaitonde’s eventual arrival upon the visual portrayal of the conscience was an elaborate evolutionary journey substantiated by his internal findings. This work, lot no. 83, is estimated to sell at INR 60,00,000 – 80,00,000.

The auction will also showcase several creations in both mediums of paintings and sculptures by artists Krishen Khanna, Himmat Shah, and Manu Parekh.

Lot no 109, a large-scale acrylic on charcoal painting by Krishen Khanna is estimated to sell at INR 25,00,000 – 30,00,000. A sculptural rendition of his preoccupation with the motif of tiger and elephant is showcased in a magnificent piece of lot no 133. This work is estimated to sell at INR 15,00,000 – 20,00,000.

Lot no. 54 is a sculpture by artist Himmat Shah, offered with an estimate of INR 20,00,000 – 25,00,000.

Among several creations by Manu Parekh offered in the upcoming auction, lot no. 131 is a beautiful composition titled ‘Temple Festival at Moonlight.’ A rich and exquisite example of his consistent exploration of the holy city of Benares, this work is offered with an estimate of INR 20,00,000 – 30,00,000.

Lot no. 104, a work by K H Ara is a rare work, an oil on canvas creation from the circa 1940s, and showcases a distinct departure from Ara’s preferred styles of nudes and still life. This lot is estimated to sell at INR 30,00,000 – 40,00,000.

Princess Diana’s Iconic Evening Dress Sells for Record $1.14 Million

A blue and black evening dress worn by the late Princess Diana in the 1980s has fetched a record amount with 11 times its estimate at a California-based auction house.

Julien’s Auctions, based in Beverly Hills, announced late Monday that the dress, designed by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury, was sold for $1,143,000, smashing the previous record of $604,800.

The late British royal wore the dress, which features a black velvet bodice embroidered with stars, in Italy’s Florence in April 1985, and in Vancouver, Canada in May 1986.

The dress was sold along with a matching illustration as part of Julien’s “Hollywood Legends” auction, which ended on Sunday, CNN reported.

The sale also featured a blush-pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana in her engagement portrait in 1981.

It sold for $381,000, almost four times its estimate.

In September, a red sweater featuring a black sheep among rows of white ones worn by the late Princess had fetched more than $1.1 million at an auction in Sotheby’s, New York.

According to Sotheby’s, Diana wore the Warm and Wonderful — a British luxury knitwear brand — sweater in 1981 to a polo match of Prince Charles.

A BBC report said the sweater, which was unearthed in an attic in March, commanded a higher price than many other objects tied to the “People’s Princess” that were sold at auctions in recent years.

The sweater’s design is often described as symbolic of Diana’s place within the royal family.

Mahatma Gandhi’s personal belongings, including his wooden sandals and what is believed to be the last photo of him taken alive, are expected to raise more than half a million pounds at an online auction in the UK, according to a report in Express. In total, 70 items belonging to the iconic figure are expected to raise £500,000, the report further said. The most important items on the list are one of his own hand-made loincloths, letters he wrote whilst imprisoned and two pairs of his sandals.

Mr Stowe added that the collection is “important to the history of the world” as well. “It will truly blow people away,” he added.

Further, as per the media outlet, a standout in the collection is what is believed to be the last photograph taken of Mahatma Gandhi while he was still alive. Exactly 20 years after the groundbreaking The ABC Series, which introduced and established a credible financial market and respectability for Indian film publicity material and memorabilia, this collection of rare first-release original film posters from India’s vast cinematic history, includes many designs that are still not available on the global internet.

Various live events and exhibitions will be held in Mumbai and Delhi in the coming months to pay tribute to many Indian film legends and superstars, including Satyajit Ray, Dilip Kumar, Bimal Roy, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, SuaraBanu, and PamartStudio.

Little will change unless the Indian film community takes a greater responsibility for preserving and reviving our paper-based cinematic heritage. Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Dia Mirza, and a few others have previously purchased Osian’s auctions, but an irreversible change requires a much larger and collected interest. “We hope you will take this delicate art form to the next financial level,” Ambassador (Retd.) UK to auction Tipu’s throne finial worth £1.5 Mn

The decision on the export licencing application for the finial has been postponed until February 11, 2022, and can be extended up to June 11, 2022…reports Asian Lite News.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport of the United Kingdom is auctioning off a throne finial stolen from India for £1.5 million, or Rs 14,98,64,994. Known as the “Throne finial”, the throne has also imposed an export embargo. The gold tiger head, which initially belonged to Mysuru monarch Tipu Sultan’s throne in 18th century India, was placed under a temporary export ban to find a buyer in the United Kingdom. The finial is one of eight gold tiger heads that decorated the ruler’s throne, also known as “Tiger of Mysore.”

The UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport took to the micro-blogging site to announce the auction and stated that a £1.5 million throne finial is at risk of leaving the UK. The gold finial, studded with rubies, diamonds, and emeralds, is characterised as a rare example of thoroughly documented 18th century South Indian goldsmiths’ work, with its existence unknown until 2009.

The decision on the export licencing application for the finial has been postponed until February 11, 2022, and can be extended up to June 11, 2022. The decision was taken in response to the opinion of the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA), which decided that it is an important symbolic object in late-eighteenth-century Anglo-Indian history.

Lord Stephen Parkinson, UK Arts Minister, stated that “this interesting finial recounts the tale of Tipu Sultan’s rule and urges us to evaluate our imperial history.” He said that he hopes a buyer from the United Kingdom comes forward so that we can all learn more about this pivotal moment in our shared history with India.

Until his defeat and death in 1799, Tipu Sultan was regarded as the biggest menace to the British East India Company. As king of Mysuru, Tipu Sultan associated himself and his personal treasures with tiger iconography, and experts feel that this finial provides historians with the chance to portray the rich culture of Tipu Sultan’s court while also closely examining British colonial history.

But Channel 4 news correspondent Fatima Manji wrote on twitter: “But how did it [the finial] arrive in the UK? In 1799, after defeating Tipu Sultan in south India, East India Company soldiers began to seize loot. Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) wrote: ‘scarcely a house in the town was left unplundered’. Another report speaks of “carnage’.”

She adds: “The most senior Britons were alarmed at the wild behaviour of the troops. They decided to organise a process of handing out war booty, and as part of this Tipu Sultan’s octagonal throne was broken up and pieces handed out as prizes to soldiers. There were eight of these tigers.”

According to the Antiques Trade Gazette, the artefact was purchased at Bonhams for £389,600 in April 2009 and offered at auction again at Christie’s in New York in June 2019 in a Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence sale estimated at £350,000-£500,000. However, the finial was withdrawn before the auction. According to Christie’s provenance details, the piece came from the historic collection of Baron Wallace of Knarsdale and was later consigned to the Bonhams sale.

As Indian celebrities latching onto the craze of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s NFT collections reached highest ever bidding in India at $5,20,000 on Day 1 of the auction.

Madhushala is his father’s collection of poems recorded in the superstar’s own voice.

“In a world of metaverses and digitization, NFTs have opened the doors to a new realm of connectivity and an opportunity to engage with my fans in a new way,” Bachchan said.

“The NFTs will offer the audience a chance to own an original piece of rare and cherished moments of my life including stories from my films, recitation from Madhushala, some back stories and moments from my films and these moments remain with them forever,” he added.

In addition to this, the auction also has seven autographed posters from his iconic movies and half a dozen collectibles of “punks and NFTs art and Poster collection” which have received bids worth over $1,00,000 on Day 1.

Meanwhile, following in the footsteps of megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, actress Sunny Leone has also ventured into the NFT space.

Sunny has gone on to mint her NFTs. Minting is a process through which digital art becomes a part of the Ethereum blockchain – a public ledger that is unchangeable and tamper-proof.

The actress took the lead among Indian actors to secure their digital assets when she broke the news about her association with NFT, two months back. This made her the first Indian actress to roll out her own NFTs.
