What will it take for you to help save Balochs from genocide?

It has been more than 4,790 days since the Baloch missing person’s families have been protesting in Quetta at the hunger strike camp demanding information from the government about their loved ones who have gone missing….writes DR AMJAD AYUB MIRZA

I sit down to write this article with a very heavy heart. On October 14, a total of 500 dead and mutilated bodies were found on the roof top and in the morgue of Nishtar Teaching Hospital in Multan city in Pakistan.

The corpses had their chests surgically opened and internal organs removed. Some of the dead bodies seemed to be laying in the open for quite some time since they had been reduced to mere skeletons while other seemed fresh.

What was shacking was that some of the dead bodies had still got their clothes on, and guess what, the dresses were of Baloch pattern. It has been more than 4,790 days since the Baloch missing person’s families have been protesting in Quetta at the hunger strike camp demanding information from the government about their loved ones who have gonemissing. Now we might know where those sons and husbands and mothers and daughters might have ended up.

Over 14,000 persons missing in Balochistan and the count is rising each day

It is widely believed that the Baloch people hail from the Iranian plateau. In his research work Naseer Dashti informs us that “nearly 3,000 years ago, a multitude of tribes left their abodes in Central Asia and moved towards west, south, and southeast directions”.

These tribes were pastoralist nomads who later settled in the south and eastern fringes of Iranian plateau. Originally called the Balashchik they became Baloch. And the name of the region they finally settled in became known as Balochistan. Meaning the country of the Baloch.

Dashti’s research, based on extensive enquiry in classic manuscripts and references, concludes that the Baloch “created a nation state (Balochistan) that lasted for nearly 300 years as an independent state, (until it) vanished from the map of the world when it was occupied by Pakistan in 1948”.

The Baloch have been fighting to rid themselves of foreign occupation from the time of the Persian empire to that of the British and more recently Pakistan. During the British Raj in 1839 the British occupied the territory of Kalat and Balochistan was divided into several administrative regions. Dashti claims that “in the context of the ‘Great Game’, the British, under various boundary commissions, granted western and northwestern regions of Balochistan to Persia and Afghanistan”.

However, the Baloch people never accepted the division of their land and rose in revolt time and again. During the early decades of the twentieth century the Baloch resistance was crushed jointly by the British, Afghans and the Persians.

Since the early twentieth century the Baloch have formed several political organisations to fight against the illegaloccupation of their home land. From the formation of Anjuman-e-Itehad-Wa Balochistan in the early 1900s to the establishment of Kalat State National Party in 1937, to the growth of several armed struggles since 1948 such as the Baloch Liberation Army, Baloch Liberation Front, UnitedRepublican Guards to BRAS, a coalition the Baloch militant organisation, they have continued with their tradition to fight for the freedom of the native soil from usurpers and colonialist.

The India Independence Act of 1947 granted freedom to all the 560 plus princely states which had agreements with the British Indian government and the Crown. Balochistan became a self-governing state once again. However, on March 28, 1948 Pakistan sent its troops and forcefully annexed Balochistan.

Ever since the Baloch have risen at least five times to fight the Pakistani occupying army but this time the fight is proving to be the most determined and with gruesome consequences.

Dozens of desecrated bodies found on hospital’s roof in Multan

Pakistan continues to conduct military operations in Balochistan under the pretext of chasing terrorists while in actuality Pakistan army is targeting those who are against the occupation and are joining the resistance.

Over 15,000 Baloch have so far been reported missing. The government of Pakistan claims that they have escaped to Iran and Afghanistan to seek asylum. But now we know where these innocent Baloch people are actually ending up.

The current oppression conducted by the Pakistan army and the nation state is different from the previous ones. The state and army of Pakistan is conducting systematic genocide and the evidence that has surfaced on pervious occasionsregarding mass graves in TuTak, Panjgor and other parts of occupied Balochistan as well as the recent 500 dead Baloch bodies recovered from Nishtar Hospital are testimony to the ongoing genocide.

The question is what has to happened to make it stop? Firstly, on a national level the Supreme Court of Pakistan should take a Suo Moto notice, DNA tests of all the dead should be conducted before they are buried, the Medical Superintendent of Nishtar Hospital should be arrested, an investigation into the role of the Multan Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Akhtar Nawaz Sati should be investigated and the Chief Minister of Punjab (current and previous ones) should be made accountable.

Secondly, internationally the International Court of Justiceshould take notice of such a heinous war crime and launch an enquiry and the UN Human Rights Council should form a committee to investigate the genocidal massacre of the Baloch people.

The Baloch people are rightfully asking why the world bodies are silent on the genocide of their people when they were swift in reacting to the genocide of Tutsi minority ethnic group in Rwanda in 1994 and the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Bosnia between 1992 and 1995.

Since Balochistan is the gateway for China’s Pakistan-China-Economic-Corridor, the role of China in the ongoing killing of the Baloch people cannot be ignored and must be looked into.

With tears rolling down my face I ask the world community this question: what will it take for you to help save the innocent Baloch people from the ongoing genocide?

Balochistan on alert over possible TTP attacks

Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Asif had expressed concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the northwest part of the country…reports Asian Lite News

Balochistan Police issued a security alert on Thursday warning possible attacks by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) across the province, media reports said.

The letter, issued by the Central Police Office Quetta, said that the banned outfit has threatened to launch attacks in different cities of Balochistan including Zhob, Qila Saifullah, Ziarat, and Loralai, Samaa TV reported

The targets, however, have not been identified by the TTP.

In a view of the threat, the police and other law enforcement agencies need to be vigilant and improve security arrangements to avoid any untoward incidents, it added.

On October 8, PPP Senator Raza Rabbani, on a point of public concern, asked Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani during the Senate meeting to direct the Interior Minister to take parliament and the public at large into confidence about the present status of peace talks with the TTP.

Rabbani pointed out that a call had been made to take parliament on board when the disclosure about dialogue with the TTP was made for the first time. He, however, regretted that the demand about a matter linked with the future of coming generations fell on deaf ears, Samaa TV reported.

He said nobody knew about the conditions of the ceasefire with the group and the status of talks.

Earlier, the Interior Ministry had recently issued an alert over the increasing threat of terrorist attacks by the group or its factions after talks with the TTP broke down.

Also, Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Asif had expressed concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the northwest part of the country.

Asif said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was responsible for maintaining a law and order situation that has witnessed a surge in attacks in the recent past. “Armed forces rendered countless sacrifices to establish peace in the country,” he was quoted as saying by ARY News on Monday.

Speaking on the floor of the house, the Pakistan defence minister recommended holding a debate in the house on the law and order situation of the KP province.

“Former prime minister had taken shelter in KP and he is using the resources of the KP government. The whole [provincial] government is just focusing on getting power for its leader. An individual is using religion card for his political gains,” he said.

Pakistan defence minister’s remarks came on the day as armed men opened fire on a school van in Khyber that killed a driver while injuring a child. This incident comes amid concerns over the growing presence of TTP in the northwest part of the country, following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August.

The firing took place in Swat’s Char Bagh area, a day after the 10th anniversary of the shooting of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai by the outlawed group TTP, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The police said the incident occurred on Monday outside the Knowledge City School in the Guli Bagh locality. After the news broke, scores of students and teachers of private schools in the Swat district demonstrated against terrorist activities in the region.

Hundreds of protesters, who chanted slogans demanding peace in the region, said the law and order situation in Swat had been deteriorating for the past three months. “We know who is behind the current drama. We know why the security forces are helpless against a few so-called terrorists,” a protester was quoted as saying by Dawn.

A Pakistan rights group condemned the “terrorist attack” on a school bus in Swat and said, “Swat’s residents are right to hold the security forces responsible for failing to enforce the writ of the state.”

“HRCP strongly condemns the terrorist attack on a school bus in Swat, in which the driver was killed and a young girl injured,” the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said in a statement posted on Twitter. (IANS/ANI)

Baloch insurgents claim responsibility for military chopper crash

Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that a helicopter had “crashed” in Balochistan, but did not say the chopper had been shot down. …reports Atul Aneja

Pakistan has lost its second military helicopter in Balochistan in two months, with the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claiming that it had shot down the chopper, killing six people on board.

In an emailed statement sent to India Narrative, the BLA said that it had first arrested two Pakistani military personnel near Zardaalo, an area in Harnai Balochistan, following which Pakistani helicopters arrived in the area. The BLA said it then shot down at least one chopper near Khost, Harnai. It added that the helicopter was downed in an area which was five kilometres from where the two Pakistanis had been detained.

Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that a helicopter had “crashed” in Balochistan, but did not say the chopper had been shot down. The ISPR statement said that two Majors, Muhammad Muneed Afzal and Khurram Shyahzad who were both pilots were among the six personnel who were killed.

This the second Pakistani military helicopter that has crashed in Balochistan in the last two months. The casualties in the first chopper crash were even bigger as it had killed Quetta corps commander Lt. Gen .Sarfraz Ali and five others, most of whom were senior military officers.

In case the BLA claim is confirmed, it would suggest a quantum jump in the group’s ability, which was not only capable of launching strikes on the ground, but also equipped to reliably defend against aerial attacks. The two strikes are expected to deter the Pakistanis from launching low-flying helicopter gunship attacks against Baloch insurgents on the ground.

The two helicopter downings add to the BLA’s heft on the ground. At the beginning of the year, BLA’s Majeed Brigade had claimed responsibility for deadly strikes against Pakistan’s Frontier Corps contingents camped in Panjgur and Noshki.

The BLA has also made it a point that it would target Chinese presence, including the Gwadar port, and other nodes inside Pakistan.

Unsurprisingly, the group had earlier claimed responsibility for the attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi in November 2018.

In June 2020, the BLA has also claimed responsibility for the strike on the Karachi stock exchange, in which the Chinese are believed to have made significant investments. Three security guards and a police sub-inspector were killed in the strike.

In April, Shari Baloch, said to belong to the BLA’s Majeed Brigade blew herself up and killed three Chinese nationals involved in running the Confucius institute in the Karachi university.

Analysts say that despite the potent strikes and impressive growth in capability, the Baloch insurgency has much work to do to acquire the critical mass to change the balance of power against Pakistan in Balochistan.

Millions affected as deadly floods batter Pakistan

Heavy downpour continued to pummel parts of Pakistan already battered by calamitous floods of epic proportions, unleashing a fresh wave of death and destruction in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Balochistan and Sindh provinces.

Scores of people died in KP, where heavy rains for the second consecutive day triggered devastating floods in rivers and streams that also swept away several homes near their banks, hotels in hilly resorts, while Balochistan remained cut off from the rest of the country due to fresh rains, The Express Tribune reported.

The KP government declared rain emergency in several districts as flash floods triggered by torrential rains wreaked havoc in most parts of the province, raising the province-wide death toll to at least 238 people, officials said.

They added that rain emergency, which came into effect immediately, would remain in place till August 30 as the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast another spell of monsoon downpour which might continue in the next week, The Express Tribune reported.

Fresh torrential rains pummelled different parts of the province on the second consecutive day.

Heavy downpour in Kaghan Valley triggered flash flood in the Munnawar Nullah that swept away 10 people, according to official data.

More than 10 shops, two hotels and eight vehicles were swept away in Mahandri due to severe flooding in the stream.

A mosque, two schools and a police post were also damaged.

The Kaghan highway was closed for traffic at many places, while people on the Kunhar river banks had moved away to safer places.

Floods leave Balochistan disconnected

Balochistan’s connection via roads, air and train has also been disconnected as relief activities become close to impossible to reach to the flood affected areas….reports Asian Lite News

The devastating monsoon rain, flash floods and cloud bursts have wrecked havoc across Pakistan with over 70 per cent of the country severely affected and Balochistan remains disconnected from the rest of the country due to the severe deluge.

Balochistan has lost all means of connection, travel routes and access from the rest of the country as railway tracks, internet services and telecommunication services have been disrupted due to the extensive damage caused by the continued torrential rain and flash flood in several areas, including the provincial capital Quetta.

As per the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTI). the services have been impacted in Quetta, Ziarat, Khuzdar, Loralai, Pishin, Chaman, Panjgur, Zhob, Qila Saifullah and Qila Abdullah because of damage to optical fiber cables.

“Efforts are being made to resolve the unprecedented situation. PTA is monitoring the situation and further updates will be shared,” maintained PTA

Balochistan’s connection via roads, air and train has also been disconnected as relief activities become close to impossible to reach to the flood affected areas.

Disconnection of telecommunication and Internet services has added to the sufferings and severity of the situation as this is the third time in less than a week that cellular and internet services have been disrupted.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) stated that due to multiple cuts in the Ghotki, Khairpur and Sukkur districts, the telecommunication services have been disrupted.

One other reason for the cable cuts is because of the use of heavy machinery for the relief and rescue activities being done in Sukkur and its surrounding districts.

“Due to extensive flooding, most of the pathways of underground cables have been submerged, as relief workers or locals were trying to divert floodwater by digging trenches on roads and footpaths,” said Syed Aminul Haque, Federal Minister for IT and Telecom.

“The situation is serious and more such incidents could be expected in the near future,” he added.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), at least 937 people have been killed since mid-June due to the record rainfall and some 33 million others were displaced.

The government has officially declared a flood emergency in the country after it received at least 166.8 mm of rain in August, which is at least 241 per cent more than the average 48 mm every year.

Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces are among the worst hit areas with flood water inundating towns, cities and agricultural fields.

The devastation is the worst in the country’s history.

More rains were expected in the regions of Sindh and Balochistan.

Flood victims living in camps have returned to their dilapidated houses after they were not provided with any facilities….reports Asian Lite News

A fresh rain spell has intensified problems for the people in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, leaving them with less or no food as flash flooding has cut off traffic between Karachi and Quetta, the media reported on Wednesday.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has said flooding may further aggravate in northeastern and central areas of the province, reports Geo News.

Flood victims living in camps have returned to their dilapidated houses after they were not provided with any facilities.

A highway linking Balochistan to Punjab has been re-opened for traffic.

Over 2,000 trucks loaded with edibles and small vehicles remained stuck in Fort Munro for a whole week, leaving vegetables and fruits spoiled.

The situation has caused a food crisis in Balochistan, Geo News reported.

Traffic between Balochistan and Punjab is suspended for the eighth consecutive day in Fort Munro. Efforts are underway to clear the road with the help of heavy machinery, said the PDMA.

Meanwhile, inter-provincial traffic between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also suspended for the eighth day at Dhana Sar.

Hundreds of people have so far lost their lives in the ongoing floods across Pakistan.

Due to the catastrophic impact of rainfall in Balochistan, the death toll in the province has reached 230, with at least five lives lost on Tuesday, according to the PDMA, Geo News reported.

The death tally includes 110 men, 55 women, and 65 children.

In Sindh’s Larkana district, more than 200 houses have been ravaged and flooding has claimed the lives of 22 people in the span of three days.

Educational institutions across the province have been closed till August 27.

At least 549 people have died in Pakistan in the past month as a result of flash floods brought on by unusually strong monsoon rains, with rural areas in the province of Balochistan among the worst affected.

According to the NDMA, the past month saw 133 per cent more rain than the 30-year average, making it the wettest in three decades. (ANI)

‘Che Guevara’ of South Asia seeks intervention of India in Balochistan

Our enemy is coward and scared of our scholars in the universities from their fame and their enlightened minds and is trying to silence them through assassinations”…Dr Allah Nazar Baloch interacts with Mark Kinra

Before India’s independence and Pakistan’s creation, on 11 August 1947, Balochistan got independence. But it lasted only nine months as Pakistan occupied Balochistan on 27 March 1948. Since then, Balochistan has been fighting for its independence and for more than two decades one person-Dr Allah Nazar Baloch has been fighting tooth and nail against the Pakistani Army.

In an exclusive interview, Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) leader Dr Allah Nazar Baloch speaks with Mark Kinra about his journey in the field of politics, torture in Pakistani dungeons, the newly created BRAS group, the Iran connection, Barrick Gold, Baloch expectations from India and much more.

Excerpts from the interview:

Please tell me something about your background and how did you start your political journey?

I was born in a common Baloch family in Mashkay, Awaran district. My family’s occupation was similar to that of a common Baloch-living a nomad’s way and working as seasonal farmers. As far as my political life is concerned, it started in 1985 through the Baloch Students Organization (BSO).

What were the turning points in your life that made you put down your stethoscope, shun your medical practice, pick up the gun and become a freedom fighter?

I will not term it as a turning point because we had been hearing the stories of terror from our elders which were perpetrated by Gen. Ayub Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and others, which has affected our living conditions on a day-to-day basis. Later, BSO gave us an understanding of how the Baloch are subjugated and our rights denied.

As far as shunning medical practice is concerned, this was a great opportunity for me as I can indulge myself in understanding my people, my land and my nation I which couldn’t do during five years of medical education. Not that I was waiting for such an opportunity but as soon as I got that opportunity and the BLF came into being; our real political struggle i.e the freedom struggle started. But I never really left the practice completely and tried to continue it alongside the freedom struggle. But surely in some sense, Pakistan’s barbarity towards the Baloch, poverty and stories from our elders was a turning point which led us to pick a weapon and initiate the freedom struggle for Balochistan.

You were a member of the Baloch Student Organization (BSO), what was the reason to form your own student organization BSO (Azad)?

Gen. Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law was still in place when I became a member of BSO. Soon after his plane crashed in August 1988, elections were announced. A section of BSO to which I was attached, had relations with the Baloch National Youth Movement (BNYM) and the latter contested the elections on the condition that they will use this platform to highlight the freedom struggle. But later they got entangled in Pakistani politics and it became a challenge for us.

Until that time, I held several top positions in BSO. I was the Senior Vice-Chairman of BSO when BSO (Azad) was created. Our thought was to create a platform which would be free from the influence of Pakistani politics and to create leadership for the community. We were eventually successful and as of today, the Baloch freedom struggle movement takes its credit that most leaders were part of BSO (Azad).

Please tell us in detail about BLF. Does it relate to Jumma Khan’s BLF of the 1960s or is it a completely different organization?

Jumma Khan’s BLF has nothing to do with our BLF. Mir Jumma Khan was a seasoned politician who used to fight in Iran-occupied Balochistan. Yes, we have taken our name from the old organization but our organization is very different in its ideology.

You have been arrested many times by Pakistani forces and detained for years. You faced uncountable physical and mental torture. How did you maintain your will and sanity in such extreme situations?

During the political protests, I was arrested many times-sometimes for hours, sometimes for days but the cruellest mental and physical torture which I had to bear was in 2005. I still carry trauma from the torture which was inflicted on me 17 years ago.

It isn’t just me. Numerous Baloch have undergone torture in the torture dungeons of Pakistan and they have the same story to share. This includes several of my colleagues who are fighting for independence today and have survived these torture cells like – Mir Wahid Qambar, Mir Abdul Nabi Bagulzai, Dr Naseem Baloch (BNM Chairman), Kamal Baloch (Senior Joint Secretary), Akhtar Nadeem and my brother Ali Nawaz Gohar who was later martyred and many more friends.

Our longing for freedom kept us strong during these horrific times. I remember once when I was in jail, a professor visited me to ask about my well-being and told me that I have to sustain this torture because I am living for a bigger purpose. All those struggling in Pakistan’s death dungeons today are alive because of their willpower and bigger purpose for the Baloch nation.

In 2018, BRAS was formed, which is an umbrella organization of Baloch armed groups. What was the reasoning behind BRAS, when BLF is already functioning separately?

As far as BRAS is concerned, we needed Etihaad (togetherness) and we were planning this for long. BLF is a successful organization but we believe whichever organization is fighting this independence war should be on a common platform. Groups like BLA, BRG and BRA are all part of BRAS. There are several other groups, which I believe should also become part of BRAS and I intend that this alliance should culminate towards a strong unified organization in future, my firm belief along with other leaders is that this organization will lead the Baloch struggle further.

Over 14,000 persons missing in Balochistan and the count is rising each day

Do you think that the leadership of common Baloch like yourself has replaced the Sardari system?

The Sardari system hasn’t benefited the Balochistan independence war from the beginning. Moreover, we feel there are a lot of pitfalls in the tribal system as they cannot fulfil the desires of the independence struggle. That is why the Baloch nation has decided to fight a war which leads the whole nation together. I don’t want to name myself, but there are a lot of Baloch under whose leadership the Baloch nation is fighting a commendable independence war and they have no linkages to the family of any Sardar but they are fighting like a common Baloch. Sardars and their families should realize that the tribal system will not fulfil the desires of the national movement and they should fight this war as Baloch.

In a recent interview, Mehran Marri said that the genesis of Balochistan’s struggle was laid by Marri and Bugti families, how do you see this statement considering that the fight for Balochistan has gone beyond these families and common people have joined in?

I disagree with Mehran Marri sahib that the struggle for independence of Balochistan was started by either family. The freedom struggle was started by the people of Balochistan. Though both Nawab Khair Bax Marri and Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti were stalwarts of the Baloch nation and we highly regard them for their sacrifices which are inspiring to the Baloch nation today and in times to come. I believe, the trust which the Baloch nation had towards the two stalwarts is lesser towards the current family members. If they can fight this independence war being a Baloch and not a Sardar then the Baloch nation wholeheartedly will support our friends.

Pakistani intellectuals and authorities have stated that Iran is supporting and backing you while Mehran Marri, without naming the BLF, has stated that many new activists are being monetarily supported by Iran, Saudi Arabia and ISI. How much truth is there in this statement?

I don’t know on what basis, the concerned person is saying that I am getting support from Iran and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia doesn’t even share a border with Balochistan. We are fighting independently, we want support from the EU, UK, US, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Gulf states and all those countries who consider the Baloch as a victim. They should support our cause for independence and we would welcome them. Neither Iran nor Saudi Arabia has supported us till and I don’t see any plan in the foreseeable future. However, hope God-willing these countries support us.

There have been some major attacks on Pakistan since the start of this year. After the Lahore blast at the Anarkali market, you stated that each independence war is unique and depends upon the war strategy of the oppressed. Are you favouring the killing of civilians in this independence war?

I will never favour attacking the civilian population as a human being but the fact of the matter is the psychology of our enemy, the realities of our land and region are very different than in other parts of the world. Our enemy doesn’t even spare our mothers and children.

Men and women, old or young are treated in the same manner, they are being dragged out of their homes and put in jail or killed and their mutilated bodies are dumped. Our enemy is coward and scared of our scholars in the universities from their fame and their enlightened minds and is trying to silence them through assassinations. And in this context, I have stated that our struggle is different from anywhere else in the world, especially in regards to the enemy and geography as we are fighting a complicated war, therefore our strategy also needs to be different. Our enemy doesn’t have any ethics nor cultural values or redlines in war, so we need to act accordingly at times.

BRAS has warned Canadian company Barrick Gold to stay from the Reko Diq deal. The new deal will give 25% to Balochistan and will give employment to Baloch. Why do you oppose the deal, even the Balochistan Assembly has given its assent to the deal?

Balochistan Assembly doesn’t represent Baloch, all those people who are sitting in the Assembly are brought in by ISI. Baloch doesn’t even know the names of these representatives. They are all selected people. The alleged CM of Balochistan belongs to my place, what kind of popular support does he have? He couldn’t even bag 8% support among the registered voters but now he has become the CM. I firmly believe Baloch has never trusted this Assembly for its legality or its freedom struggle. I request the media to take note of this that this Assembly is created by ISI and from time to time people sit here like in musical chairs. I completely support the warning which BRAS has given to Barrick Gold officials for Reko Diq or Chinese for CPEC that foreign companies should not trade with illegitimate people who have colonized us and these projects are displacing people, exploiting them and they do not have approval or sanctity of the Baloch nation.

Pakistan has alleged that BLF has for a long time received funding and support from India. Is this true? If No, do you wish that the Indian people and Indian Govt. should support the cause of Balochistan?

Pakistan has always alleged from the start that we receive funding and support from India, which is ridiculous. These Pakistani Punjabis are perpetual liars, they even blame their politicians/political parties as Indian agents. This is part of their culture and political narrative. We are fighting for our independence, so Pakistan will use this propaganda. We want to clarify that we want India to intervene in Balochistan as an immediate neighbour but unfortunately India is not openly supporting Balochistan’s independence nor providing any kind of support to Baloch. We appeal and welcome India being the biggest democracy to intervene in Balochistan as India knows how Pakistan is committing genocide upon us, it is also your responsibility from our shared history.

Row over Pak army’s revenge killings in Balochistan refuses to die

The revenge killings by the Pakistani army has united the broad spectrum of Baloch society…writes Rahul Kumar

The Balochistan provincial government has written a letter to the Balochistan High Court (BHC) seeking a judicial inquiry into the ‘encounter killings’ in which nine people were killed by the Pakistani army in Ziarat. The inquiry will find out the status of the slain people – whether they were missing people or not.

The Friday Times quoted the provincial government as saying: “Government of Balochistan intends to conduct a ‘judicial inquiry’ by a honourable judge of High Court of Balochistan into the killing of persons in Ziarat operation under ‘The Balochistan Tribunal of Inquiry Ordinance 1969’… It is, therefore, requested that nomination of a judge… may kindly be conveyed to this department for the subject purpose”.

On July 16, the Pakistani army had claimed to have killed nine ‘terrorists’ while searching for the kidnappers of Lt. Col. Laiq Baig Mirza — an army officer who had been kidnapped with his cousin while travelling from Ziarat to Quetta. He was found dead while his cousin’s body was discovered later in a different place.

Rebels from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of the senior Pakistani Army officer — an unprecedented act by Baloch rebels that demonstrated how the Baloch insurgency has only grown bigger despite Pakistan’s heavy-handed tactics in curbing the nationalist movement.

In response to the kidnapping and killing of a serving Pakistani army officer, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the public relations wing of the army, claimed to have killed nine “terrorists” in an encounter with the BLA.

The revenge killings by the Pakistani army has united the broad spectrum of Baloch society.

Baloch groups — rebels as well as political parties — have categorically said that five of the nine men were “forcibly disappeared persons” — the Pakistani parlance for people kidnapped by the army and intelligence agencies taken to torture cells without being produced before courts.

Even Baloch political parties, which are supposedly close to the Pakistani government, came forward to denounce the ‘encounter’.

Sardar Akhtar Mengal of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-Mengal) told the media that he had even requested Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to order an inquiry into the Ziarat encounter, adding: “We have evidence of who was picked up where and when”.

The Baloch National Movement (BNM) said that five of the assassinated persons “had been whisked away by Pakistan Army at different times. All of them were in torture cells of Pakistan. The State took them out of the torture cells and killed them in the fake encounter”.

The information secretary of the BNM, Qazi Rehman told India Narrative: “Shams Satakzai was abducted five years ago, Shahzad son of Khudabakhsh Dehwar resident of Kalat was whisked away on 4 June this year, Engineer Zaheer Ahmed was abducted on October 7, 2021, Salim son of Karim Baksh residents Balgatar on April 18, 2022 and Dr. Mukhtiar Ahmed son of Abdul Hai, resident of Naal Khuzdar, was forcibly disappeared by the Pakistani Army from the Polytechnic College in Quetta Sariab Road on June 11.”

Pakistan has literally handed over the province to the army besides imposing a total media blackout in the province. It has been using helicopter gunships in operations against the civilian population in a bid to intimidate the community.

This year, Balochistan has witnessed high profile attacks including the Shari Baloch suicide bombing on China’s Confucius institute in Karachi leading to the deaths of three Chinese including the director of the institute. In other attacks the Baloch rebels occupied the Panjgur camp of Pakistani forces for three days resulting in scores of deaths of Pakistani security personnel.

‘A military project’: Baloch activist slams CPEC

The Canada-based Baloch activist said that China is the new colonial power while Pakistan is bankrupt, adding that the day Balochistan gets independence, Pakistan will be on its knees…reports Rahul Kumar

Hitting out at the mega billion dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) that seeks to link China with the Arabian Sea through the length of Pakistan, Baloch activist Naela Quadri said that the CPEC is a military project because China wants a military port in Gwadar.

Quadri is visiting Delhi as part of an India tour to raise support for the independence of war-torn Balochistan from Pakistan.

Quadri said: “No country has the right to sell Balochistan’s ports as this is disputed land since 1948. Not only China and Pakistan but even Barrick Gold should refrain from mining in Balochistan till it is independent”. She was referring to the Canada-based company that had signed an agreement with the Imran Khan government to dig up minerals in Balochistan.

The Canada-based Baloch activist said that China is the new colonial power while Pakistan is bankrupt, adding that the day Balochistan gets independence, Pakistan will be on its knees. “Pakistan has sold our resources to China. The day China entered Balochistan, Pakistan’s human rights violations turned into a genocide,” she alleged.

China’s CPEC, a massive infrastructure project, seeks to connect Pakistan’s Gwadar Port with north-west China’s Xinjiang region through a network of road, rail and port projects. Baloch rebels have carried out a number of attacks against Chinese nationals and also against the CPEC infrastructure.

‘US, India make attempts to manoeuvre Pak out of CPEC’

Quadri said that to source international loans, Pakistan even shows Balochistan resources to its future lenders.

About her India visit, she said that she is here to raise support for the government-in-exile. Quadri said that many Western countries have lent support to the Baloch government-in-exile and more will follow soon.

She added that the Baloch want India to raise their issue at the United Nations. Referring to India as a power, she said: “In India, I have been meeting civil society organisations which is empowering. I got a lot of courage from these meetings. We have a lot of expectations of support from India.”

Congratulating President-elect Droupadi Murmu, Qadri said said that she appeals to the new President to show solidarity with Baloch women who are being tortured and shamed by the Pakistani security forces. “Pakistan is doing to our women what it had done to the women in the Bangladesh war”.

Highlighting the killings by the Pakistani armed forces, Qadri said that kidnapped Baloch people are dropped from helicopters on hilltops. “Nearly 55,000 Baloch people are in the torture cells of the Pakistan army which is doing fake encounters of doctors, engineers, writers and students. These are people who have not seen sunlight and are regularly tortured.”

Many activists joined her on stage from different faiths and groups. Prominent among them was Acharya Yeshi, former speaker of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Yeshi said that many activists for freedom struggle from different regions have been visiting Delhi for support and they succeeded in their cause. He said: “India has played an important role in the Tibetan struggle against China. All governments since Jawaharlal Nehru’s time have supported us.”

Taking a dig at China he said that China brought about the downfall of Sri Lanka. “It is not in China’s nature to help the neighbouring countries of India. They will all collapse under China’s debt”.

Highlighting the role that India has played in bringing peace to the region, Yeshi said: “India has given shelter to a lot of communities from outside the country. They have come to India and live here in peace”. Making a case for solidarity with the Baloch, Yeshi said that the different faiths and communities have to unite to support each other for a peaceful and independent Balochistan.”

Baloch people living in India thronged the venue to meet Qadri. Many Baloch, particularly from the Hindu community, have become Indian citizens and vowed to continue the battle for an indpendent Baloch nation.
