BJP’s Suresh Gopi Emerges as Front-Runner in Kerala’s Trissur

A popular actor, Gopi won hearts through his TV programme the Malayalam version of the KBC and then his stock got a boost when Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited him for his swearing in ceremony in 2009…reports Asian Lite News

As vote counting began in Kerala, it appears that the dark horse in Kerala might be former Rajya Sabha MP and BJP leader Suresh Gopi. Gopi is leading by over 10,000 votes after around 56,000 votes were counted at the Trissur Lok Sabha seat.

A popular actor, Gopi won hearts through his TV programme the Malayalam version of the KBC and then his stock got a boost when Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited him for his swearing in ceremony in 2009. What has been the biggest surprise at Trissur is that Congress MP, K Muraleedharan is trailing in third place, as CPI candidate and former state minister VS Sunilkumar is in second place. Muraleedharan was the Congress MP from Vadakara at the 2019 polls and he was shifted from there to Trissur.

He is the son of four-time Congress Chief Minister K Karunakaran. Muraleedharan’s sister a senior Congress leader Padmaja Venugopal ahead of the polls joined the BJP and had been campaigning against her brother.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi — both in 2014 and 2019 — is leading in five seats in the national capital.

The Opposition INDIA bloc is leading in two. Late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj’s daughter, Bansuri Swaraj is making her electoral debut in this general election. Swaraj, 40, is trailing AAP’s Somnath Bharti at the moment (9:37 am) in the New Delhi seat. The AAP, which rules the national capital, is in a 4:3 seat arrangement with the Congress as part of the Opposition INDIA bloc taking on the BJP. Sahi Ram of AAP is leading in South Delhi.

Kanhaiya Kumar, who lost the last Lok Sabha election from Bihar’s Begusarai in 2019, is this time pitted against BJP’s two-term MP and actor-turned-politician Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi. Besides Manoj Tiwari, the BJP has fielded six new candidates — Praveen Khandelwal (Chandni Chowk), Harsh Deep Malhotra (East Delhi), Yogender Chandolia (Northwest Delhi), Ramvir Singh Bhiduri (South Delhi), Kamaljeet Singh Sehrawat (West Delhi) and Bansuri Swaraj (New Delhi).

BJP sweeps Arunachal, Sikkim Assembly polls

The SKM was a constituent of the BJP-helmed National Democratic Alliance, but the two parties had ended their partnership ahead of the April 19 election…reports Asian Lite News

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) on June 2 recorded landslide victories to retain power for their third and second successive terms, in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim respectively.

The BJP bagged 46 of the 60 seats in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly. The party had approached the April 19 election with 10 seats won uncontested, as no other party fielded candidates against Chief Minister Pema Khandu in the Mukto constituency, his deputy Chowna Mein in Chowkham, as well as eight others.

In Sikkim, the SKM won an unprecedented 31 of the 32 seats in the State Assembly, with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang bagging two of them – Rhenock and Soreng-Chakung. The lone winner for the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, had switched over from the SKM ahead of the Assembly election after being denied a ticket.

The SKM was a constituent of the BJP-helmed National Democratic Alliance, but the two parties had ended their partnership ahead of the April 19 election.

“We are grateful to the people of Arunachal Pradesh, who voted for the developmental works under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Mr. Khandu said, after his party won five seats more than it had done in 2019.

Political observers said that Sunday’s outcome followed a pattern: the party that rules the State and at the Centre usually wins elections in Arunachal Pradesh. While the BJP did not face any anti-incumbency, it was also better organised at the grass-roots level, and faced hardly any opposition.

The Congress, which had ruled the State for more than 30 years, only managed to field candidates for 19 of the 34 seats it had intended to contest. The National People’s Party (NPP), otherwise an NDA constituent, contested 20 seats, the most after the 60 fielded by the BJP.

While the NPP won five seats –the same as in 2019 – it was only former Minister Kumar Waii who saved the Congress from a complete rout by winning the Bameng seat. The Congress had won four seats five years ago.

The remaining seats were divided among the Nationalist Congress Party (three), the regional People’s Party of Arunachal (two) and Independents (three).

Among the major losers was 77-year-old Gegong Apang, who had been Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for more than 22 years. He had floated the Arunachal Democratic Front ahead of the election in a bid to revive his political career.

The Sikkim election was expected to be a close contest between the SKM and the SDF. Instead, it turned out to be an almost complete sweep in favour of the SKM.

Voters in the Himalayan State have been giving a second chance to regional parties since the 287-day President’s Rule in 1985. The trend began with Nar Bahadur Bhandari’s Sikkim Sangram Parishad, continued with the SDF, and now the SKM.

Apart from indicating that voters had little or no complaints against the SKM, the outcome underlined the individual-driven politics in Sikkim. “Mr. Tamang has been a popular leader, particularly because of several pro-poor schemes and government jobs given to some 25,000 youths – a big thing for a State with 4.6 lakh voters – ahead of the polls,” Amit Patro, the editor of Sikkim Express, told The Hindu.

The SDF had accused the SKM of large-scale corruption but the ruling party turned the tables after the glacial lake outburst disaster in October 2023, pointing out how the SDF’s Chamling government had put the people’s lives at risk with sub-standard hydropower projects.

Tamang is also believed to have struck a chord with the voters by denying a party ticket to his son Aditya Tamang from the Soreng-Chakung seat, although his wife contested and won the Namchi-Singhithang constituency.

“Our party worked very hard but this victory is because of the love and trust of the people we earned in the past five years. We have the next five years to give our 100 per cent for the people of Sikkim,” he said, at a gathering in Gangtok’s Paljor Stadium to celebrate the party’s victory.

Sikkim’s 2024 mandate could be the end of the road for the 73-year-old former Chief Minister and SDF’s founder-president Pawan Kumar Chamling, who lost comprehensively from two seats – Namcheybung and Poklok-Kamrang. Former ace footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, who merged his Hamro Sikkim Party with the SDF in 2023, lost the Barfung seat, his sixth electoral defeat since contesting on a Trinamool Congress ticket in 2014.

The BJP, which had 10 MLAs even without contesting the 2019 election, and the newly-floated and crowdfunded Citizen Action Party, both came a cropper too. The BJP was believed to have been done in by the fears that its victory would lead to the dilution of Article 371F that guarantees special status for Sikkim. The fear was triggered by the expansion of the definition of ‘Sikkimese’ beyond the indigenous Bhutia, Lepcha, and Nepali people, in the Finance Act, 2023.

Kharge accuses BJP, PM of divisive LS campaign

Kharge addressed a total of 100 public meetings, 20 press conferences and gave over 50 interviews as the campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections concluded on Thursday…reports Asian Lite News

Accusing the BJP of making efforts to mislead the people on religious and divisive issues in the Lok Sabha election campaign, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speeches over the past 15 days “did not speak a word” on unemployment and price rise even as he mentioned “Modi” 758 times, Congress 232 times and referred to INDIA alliance 573 times.

Addressing a press conference here, Kharge expressed confidence of the INDIA bloc forming the government after the Lok Sabha polls and said they will take everyone along.

He accused the Election Commission of not acting on “divisive” speeches by PM Modi

“In his election speeches, PM Modi spoke Mandir-Masjid 421 times and spoke divisive words. He spoke words like Muslim, minority 224 times but Election Commission did act against him” Kharge said.

The campaigning for the seventh and last phase of Lok Sabha polls ended on May 30.

Kharge said the election for the 18th Lok Sabha will be remembered for a long time because in this election, every citizen of the country has come together to save democracy and the Constitution, forgetting caste, creed, religion, region, gender, language.

“The PM and leaders of the BJP made countless efforts to mislead the people on religious and divisive issues. Despite this, the people chose issues and we asked for votes on issues,” he said.

“We are confident that on June 4, 2024, the people of this country will give a mandate to a new alternative government. INDIA alliance will form a government with full majority and all of us together will give this country an inclusive nationalistic developmental government and we will move forward taking everyone along,” he added.

The Congress chief said Mahatma Gandhi had faith on non-violence and never hated anyone. “But PM’s Modi’s words reflect hatred,” he alleged.

Kharge said Congress always works by keeping in mind the problems of people. “When Manmohan Singhji was the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi was (UPA) chairperson, we brought schemes that helped the poor,” he said.

The Congress chief accused PM Modi of misusing probe agencies against his opponents and not paying attention to issues such as unemployment, price rise and economic inequality

“We fought on these issues and got full support of the people. I congratulate all my colleagues who are standing fearlessly for the protection of democracy,” he said.

Kharge also cited Dr BR Ambedkar as saying that ‘bhakti’ can be a path to salvation in religion “but ‘bhakti’ or hero-worship in politics is a definite road to disaster which ends in dictatorship.”

Kharge addressed a total of 100 public meetings, 20 press conferences and gave over 50 interviews as the campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections concluded on Thursday.

The general elections are being held across seven phases. While the first six phases are over, the seventh and the last phase will be held on June 1. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.

Congress which registered victory on 52 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections is confident that INDIA bloc will form government at the Centre this time.

Earlier today, Kharge said the election for the 18th Lok Sabha will be remembered for a long time because, in this election, every citizen of the country has come together to save democracy and the Constitution, forgetting caste, creed, religion, region, gender, and language.

“The PM and leaders of the BJP made countless efforts to mislead the people on religious and divisive issues. Despite this, the people chose issues and we asked for votes on issues,” he said.”We are confident that on June 4, 2024, the people of this country will give a mandate to a new alternative government. Kharge also cited Dr BR Ambedkar as saying that ‘bhakti’ can be a path to salvation in religion “but ‘bhakti’ or hero-worship in politics is a definite road to disaster which ends in dictatorship.”

A total of 57 seats will go to the polls in the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha polls on Saturday. Votes will be counted on June 4. (ANI)

BJP, CPI(M) have understanding on Dum Dum: Mamata

Dum Dum constituency in North 24 Parganas District is one of the nine seats in West Bengal going for polls in the last and seventh phase of the General Elections on June 1….reports Asian Lite News

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday claimed that she had definite information about a covert understanding between the BJP and CPI(M) on the Dum Dum Lok Sabha seat.

Dum Dum constituency in North 24 Parganas District is one of the nine seats in West Bengal going for polls in the last and seventh phase of the General Elections on June 1.

According to her, the understanding is that while the BJP will transfer its dedicated votes in favour of the CPI(M) candidate from Dum Dum, Dr Sujan Chakraborty, the Left party will reciprocate in the 2026 Assembly elections by transferring its dedicated votes in favour of the saffron candidates in the seven Assembly constituencies under Dum Dum.

The Chief Minister made this explosive claim while addressing a rally at Baruipur under Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency in South 24 Parganas District in support of party candidate Saayoni Ghosh.

However, Sujan Chakraborty rubbished the claims of the Chief Minister and questioned why she did not make such assertions while campaigning at Dum Dum and instead chose Jadavpur for the same.

“The Chief Minister should remember that the BJP could not open its account in West Bengal during the previous Left Front regime in the state. The lotus flourished in the state only during the Trinamool Congress regime,” Chakraborty said.

The state BJP spokesman in West Bengal and the party’s Rajya Sabha MP, Samik Bhattacharya, too, ridiculed the claims.

“The Chief Minister is making such claims at the last moment, understanding that the party’s defeat at Dum Dum is inevitable this time,” said Bhattacharya.

Rai described Prime Minister Modi as one who has brought accolades for the country at the global front…reports Asian Lite News

Just days before the final phase of polling, senior Samajwadi Party leader Narad Rai is all set to join the BJP.

The SP leader, on Monday night, took to ‘X’ to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, making his intentions clear.

Rai, who was considered close to late SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, also posted a photograph of his meeting with Amit Shah on X.

Rai described Prime Minister Modi as one who has brought accolades for the country at the global front and used the phrase “Chanakya of Politics” for Amit Shah.

“Will strengthen their resolve to strengthen the last man in the queue and their commitment towards nationalism,” his post read.

Narad Rai belongs to the Bhumihar community which has a significant presence in the Purvanchal region.

According to sources, Narad Rai was feeling sidelined in the party, especially after SP’s focus shifted to PDA — Pichda (Backwards) Dalit and Alpasankhyak (Minorities).

Rai was also apparently upset over his name not being mentioned by SP national president Akhilesh Yadav during his address at an election rally in Ballia recently.

Expressing his displeasure over the management of the event, he pointed fingers at ‘new’ SP leaders around the SP chief who “can’t even win a booth by themselves’.

In his message, he recalled the contribution of Mulayam Singh Yadav, senior leader Janeshwar Mishra and socialist ideologue Ram Manohar Lohia. In one of the messages, he said Mulayam Singh Yadav had once said that one should not hesitate to revolt if he or his people are disrespected.

Narad reportedly held a series of meetings with his supporters who turned up in large numbers during the last couple of days to gauge their mood.

BJP adopts ‘tough stand’ against growing farmers’ clamour in Punjab

Punjab has been the epicentre of protests since the beginning of the farmers’ agitation in November 2020….writes VISHAL GULATI

With clamour growing in Punjab against the BJP nominees in all the 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state over a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP), the party seems to have adopted a ‘tough stand’ on the issue.

Besides a BJP delegation led by its state unit chief Sunil Jakhar approaching the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab to express concerns over the safety of the party candidates during campaigning, BJP nominees like Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the former Indian Ambassador to the US who’s making his electoral debut from Amritsar, seem to have adopted a tough posture.

“Disheartening to see farmers’ groups silent on drug abuse by Punjab’s youth, especially in the rural belt, worsening law and order, and Amritsar’s sewerage issues while raising slogans against the BJP leaders,” Sandhu said on Monday.

The former diplomat faced the farmers’ ire when he visited the houses of two scheduled caste families to express sympathy and hear their concerns.

The farmers assembled there raised slogans against Sandhu, who in turn questioned the protesters if they had ever visited the families that have been impacted by the scourge of drugs.

“It is a shameful act on the part of the farmers,” added Sandhu, whose vision includes alternatives for agricultural development and sustainability.

Punjab has been the epicentre of protests since the beginning of the farmers’ agitation in November 2020. The BJP’s campaign in Punjab revolves around the overall development of the border state, jobs for the youth, ending the drug menace, a robust law and order system, and the betterment of farmers.

The Sikhs constitute 58 per cent of the total population in Punjab, out of which Jat Sikhs are 20-25 per cent, the largest landowners.

Addressing a public gathering in Patiala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said recently, “Punjab is blessed with five rivers. The farmers here have been turning soil into gold. But these INDI Alliance people lie even to the farmers.

“They haven’t fulfilled a single promise made to the farmers. It is the BJP that prioritises the welfare of farmers. In the past 10 years, there has been record procurement of wheat and rice from Punjab. We have increased the MSP by two-and-a-half times in these 10 years.”

Meanwhile, the ruling AAP and the Congress, despite being INDIA bloc partners, are fighting against each other in Punjab.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the BJP, one of the oldest constituents of the NDA which parted ways over the 2020-21 farm law protests, are contesting the elections solo on all seats.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), a Sikh hardliner outfit led by Simranjit Mann, have also fielded candidates on their own.

Responding to the ongoing farmers’ protests, a senior BJP leader told IANS that the agricultural states, especially Punjab, need more market-driven outcomes that require investments in infrastructure so that the farmers can expand their options to sell and operate in a level-playing field.

“The MSP system will remain an integral part of the agricultural economy that includes subsidised inputs meant to incentivise farmers to adopt new technologies and enhance farm productivity,” he said.

“Daily protests by the farmers have become a pain in the neck for the common man. We are fed up, it’s impacting our business,” Balraj Thukral, a trader in Barnala said.

This month, Barnala witnessed a clash between traders and farmers as the business community observed a day-long shutdown to protest against the frequent ‘diktats’ of farmer unions over ‘petty issues’.

Besides Sandhu, other BJP candidates, including sitting MP Preneet Kaur from Patiala, former IAS officer Parampal Kaur from Bathinda, sitting MP Ravneet Singh Bittu from Ludhiana, Hans Raj Hans from Faridkot, and Manjeet Singh Manna from Khadoor Sahib are been facing protests, mainly in the rural areas.

Hans Raj Hans was encircled by the farmers when he was enroute Prime Minister Modi’s rally in Patiala on May 23. Hans later claimed the farmers told him to speak against PM Modi.

“I said I could die for him, but won’t speak against the Prime Minister. Even if you take my life, I will not speak ill of my friend,” he said.

Stating that the BJP is not anti-farmer, state BJP chief Jakhar told IANS that under the Centre’s Kisan Credit Card scheme, nearly 22.5 lakh farmers in Punjab received a whopping Rs 56,754 crore in the past 10 years.

And under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, Rs 4,758 crore was provided and 24.50 soil health cards were made in Punjab, he said.

Hitting out at the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government, he said Punjab is reeling under a collapse in leadership that is responsible for the state’s ignominy with kangaroo courts taking roots here.

To recall, in the 2019 general elections, the BJP’s vote share in Punjab was just 9.63 per cent.

Riding on the Ram Temple wave, the BJP this time aims to notably add to its vote share by banking largely on the urban Hindu vote bank, which constitutes 38.49 per cent of the state’s population with a sizeable influence in 34 Assembly segments.

The 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state will go to the polls in the seventh and final phase on June 1. The results will be out on June 4.

BJP has been wiped out in Bihar, says Tejashwi Yadav

Under the INDIA alliance agreement in Bihar, the RJD is vying for 26 seats, Congress for nine, and the Left parties for the remaining five out of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha constituencies…reports Asian Lite News

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday, declared that the BJP has been eliminated in Bihar and that the INDIA alliance is securing a significant victory in the elections. He asserted that the INDIA alliance government will be established this time, backed by strong public support.

“BJP has been wiped out in Bihar and we are winning the elections in Bihar with a good margin. This time the INDIA alliance government is going to be formed. We have full public support”.

Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi along with RJD Leader Tejashwi Yadav participated in a public rally in Bihar’s Bakhtiyarpur on Monday.

Speaking at the rally Tejashwi Yadav alleged that investigative agencies like the CBI and the ED were toys in the hands of the PM.

“Prime Minister Modi is threatening to send me to jail by giving a date. The Prime Minister’s threat to send opposition leaders to jail has made it clear that investigative agencies like:- CBI and ED are Modi ji’s toys. Narendra Modi takes action against opposition leaders due to political malice and resistance,” he said.

In response to Bihar Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary’s remark calling Rahul Gandhi a “Bhrashtachariyo ke Raja,” Tejaswi stated, “Elections should be contested properly, and such statements should not be made. They are making these comments because they are losing the elections.”

On Rahul Gandhi’s Patna visit, Bihar Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary had said, “The manner in which the family of Lalu Prasad Yadav is making noise, it clearly shows that all these people are corrupt. “Bhrashtachariyo Ka Raja” (leader of the corrupt) is coming from Delhi, under whose leadership corruption is happening in the entire nation…In the past 55 years, the Congress party has looted the nation”.

Under the INDIA alliance agreement in Bihar, the RJD is vying for 26 seats, Congress for nine, and the Left parties for the remaining five out of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha constituencies.

While, in the NDA, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest on 17 seats, Janata Dal-United (JDU) on 16 seats, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) (Ram Vilas) on 5 seats, Hindustani Awam Morcha and Rashtriya Lok Morcha on one seat each in 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Elections in Bihar are contested in all seven phases. With 40 Lok Sabha constituencies, the fourth highest among all States and Union Territories, Bihar holds a crucial position in shaping Indian politics. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA, consisting of BJP, JDU ( (Janata Dal-United), and LJP (Lok Janshakti Party), secured victory by taking the lead on 39 out of 40 seats. Meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan, led by RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal), INC (Indian National Congress), and RLSP (Rashtriya Lok Samta Party), only managed to secure one seat. (ANI)

    RJD’s Manoj Jha attacks Modi

Targeting Prime Minister Modi over his remark that the INDIA bloc is receiving support from Pakistan, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha on Monday said that the world has never seen such a person who crosses all limits of foul language.

Speaking to ANI Jha alleged that nothing comes out of the mouth of the Prime Minister regarding China.

“Prime Minister was talking about “Mangalsutra”, “Mujra”, now Pakistan has also arrived. What type of person are you? You contest elections here. You should speak on jobs and economic and social justice. What can I say about someone whose tongue utters a word like Mujra? What language are you using? Democracy is a thing of collectivity. Nothing comes out of your mouth regarding China,” he said.

“The world has never seen such a person who crosses all limits of foul language,” Jha added.

Further, the RJD MP mentioned that the INDIA bloc will hold a meeting on June 1, before the announcement of the results of the Lok Sabha polls.

“We will discuss every point related to the counting of votes. There will be a discussion on different issues,” Manoj Jha said.

Earlier, accusing the INDIA bloc of receiving support from Pakistan and jihadis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday claimed that prayers are being read in Pakistan for the Samajwadi Party and the Congress who are appealing for “vote jihad” here.

“In Pakistan, ‘duas’ (prayers) are being made for the INDI alliance of Samajwadi Party and Congress. Jihadis from across borders supporting SP and Congress; these parties are appealing for ‘vote jihad’ here,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister gathered wide criticism from the opposition leaders over his ‘Mujra’ remark on the INDIA bloc.

“For Modi, Constitution is supreme, for Modi, Babasaheb Ambedkar’s sentiments are supreme… if the INDI alliance wants to accept the servitude of their vote bank, they are free to do so…if they want to perform ‘Mujra’ (dance), they are free to do… I will still stand with the SC, ST, and OBC reservation staunchly,” PM Modi said. The Home Minister is scheduled to hold public meetings in Lok Sabha constituencies Kushinagar at 12:15 p.m., Salempur at 1:45 p.m. and Chandauli at 3:30 p.m. while the BJP chief will attend various programmes in Varanasi.

JP Nadda arrived in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi on Sunday. He is scheduled to visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Kaal Bhairava Temple for ‘darshan’. In addition to these visits, Nadda will be participating in several programs today.

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, where Nadda will be paying his respects, is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The Kaal Bhairava Temple, another place that Nadda will visit, is a revered place of worship dedicated to Kaal Bhairava, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva.

Later, he will address conventions of intellectuals, weavers and artisans at 5:00 p.m., and influential voters at 6:10 p.m.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday exuded confidence in BJP’s victory in Varanasi, saying that much election campaigning was not required here and that the people here were proud of India’s global stature under the leadership of PM Modi.

Jaishankar expressed his observation that the people of the city have exhibited a strong desire to delve into India’s foreign policy, indicating their pride in the country’s trajectory under PM Modi’s governance.

“I have experienced this in this election campaign that people wish to know more about the country’s foreign policy. They feel proud of where PM Modi has taken this country,” Jaishankar said.

He highlighted the Modi government’s tradition of seeking feedback from citizens, reflecting a commitment to participatory governance. “It’s the Modi government’s tradition to ask for feedback from people… We don’t need to do much election campaign here in Varanasi,” he added.

“We celebrated G20 like a festival in about 60 cities across the country… I think tourism will definitely increase here in the coming days… We want to promote Kashi. We want to create its international image,” he also said.

Jaishankar’s schedule in Varanasi included interactions with educators and intellectuals, where he emphasised the pivotal role of education in shaping India’s future.

    Modi eyes hat-trick win

Considered a stronghold of Modi since 2014, Varanasi is set for a fierce battle between PM and Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections on June 1.

Varanasi is a closely watched constituency in the last phase of the Lok Sabha election, is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, with five assembly segments Rohaniya, Varanasi North, Varanasi South, Varanasi Cantt, and Sevapuri.

Ajay Rai from the Congress and Athar Jamal Lari from the Bahujan Samaj Party have filed their nominations against Modi.

Modi filed his nomination papers from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh on May 14. On the nomination day, PM Modi also performed Ganga Aarti, offering prayers to the River Ganga on the auspicious occasion of Ganga Saptami.

After filing the nomination, PM Modi urged the BJP workers to ensure a good voter turnout in his Lok Sabha constituency, Varanasi, which goes to the polls on June 1.

“What truly matters is the voter turnout; it reflects our representation in Kashi. Thus, our resolution should be directed towards booth victory. How do we achieve this? By transforming voting into a celebration of democracy. With 14 days left, let’s turn each polling booth into a festivity. Engage all local societies and neighbourhoods, adorn the booths with Rangoli and other festivities,” PM Modi said while addressing BJP workers at a conference in Varanasi.

Ajay Rai is the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee and is facing a huge challenge against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is a two-time MP from Varanasi.

Ajai Rai began his political career as a member of the Hindu nationalist outfit Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Rai’s political trajectory saw him win the Kolasla seat in 1996 and secure a ministerial berth in the BSP-BJP alliance government.

However, he parted ways with the BJP in 2007 and joined the Samajwadi Party before eventually aligning with the Congress in 2012.

The UP Congress chief, Rai, was also fielded by the Congress against the PM in Varanasi in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls, but he finished third both times.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has fielded Athar Jamal Lari from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. Lari has contested a total of 5 elections in his career, including two Lok Sabha and three Vidhan Sabha elections, but has not registered a single win.

Tejashwi: People want freedom from lies and illusions of BJP

Tejashwi Yadav targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to talk on real issues like unemployment, inflation and poverty…reports Asian Lite News

Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to talk on real issues like inflation and poverty and asserted that the people now want freedom from the “lies and illusions of Bhartiya Janata Party” (BJP).

Speaking to reporters, Tejashwi Yadav targeted the BJP and said, “They (BJP) don’t talk about any work. These people should talk about work, should talk about issues like unemployment, inflation and poverty. They should talk about how investment can come to Bihar, how factories can be opened up, and how migration can be stopped. The public wants freedom from their lies and illusions.”

The RJD leader also criticised PM Modi for making statements regarding sending him to jail. He said, “The Prime Minister, fearing defeat, is now announcing the date of sending me to jail in election rallies. He is talking about sending that youth to jail who talks about providing employment. This is a public confession by the Prime Minister that he considers the investigation agencies his toys. He means to say that ED and CBI are his puppets.”

Yadav added further, “He (PM Modi) can send any opposition leader to jail in a fabricated and imaginary case whenever he wants, wherever he wants and however he wants.”

Tejashwi Yadav also claimed that Narendra Modi wants to destroy the Constitution. “Does the Prime Minister want to destroy the Constitution and democracy so that anyone who does not obey him, who opposes his lies, who exposes his failures will be sent straight to jail? Is this not a direct confession by the Prime Minister to destroy the Constitution,” Tejashwi said.

Earlier in the day, Tejashwi Yadav wrote a letter to the PM, saying that Narendra Modi has said many baseless, factless and false things to the people.

Further coming down heavily on PM, Tejashwi in his letter said, “Should the language of the Prime Minister of this big-hearted country be like this?”

“Today, you came to Bihar and after coming here, you said as many baseless, factless and false things as you could. Now it is not expected from you that you will keep the discussion high while keeping in mind the dignity of your post. But today you have come to the terminology of “Mujra” and “Mangalsutra”. Frankly speaking, we are worried about you. Should the language of the Prime Minister of this big-hearted country be like this? You think and decide,” wrote Tejashwi to PM Modi.

The development came after PM Modi at a rally in Bihar on Saturday said that he is giving the guarantee to Bihar, SC, ST, and OBC communities that till Modi is alive, he will not let them snatch away their rights.

Eight parliamentary constituencies in Bihar will go to the polls in the last phase of Lok Sabha elections on June 1. The results will be announced on June 4. (ANI)
