Cisco Plans Layoffs

The company employs about 85,000 people, meaning that the latest job cuts are expected to affect more than 4,000 employees…reports Asian Lite News

Global networking giant Cisco has announced that it plans to lay off 5 per cent of its global workforce, amounting to thousands of employees, as part of a restructuring exercise.

According to Cisco’s most recent annual report, the company employs about 85,000 people, meaning that the latest job cuts are expected to affect more than 4,000 employees, reports CNN.

In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company announced a restructuring plan in order to “realign the organisation and enable further investment in key priority areas”.

The networking giant mentioned that the layoffs would begin this year and continue till next year, with severance and other termination benefits costing the company approximately $800 million.

“We continue to align our investments to future growth opportunities. Our innovation sits at the centre of an increasingly connected ecosystem and will play a critical role as our customers adopt AI and secure their organisations,” Chuck Robbins, chair and CEO of Cisco, said in the company’s second-quarter earnings release.

The purge follows Cisco’s late 2022 cutbacks, which resulted in 5,000 layoffs, and comes ahead of the $28 billion acquisition of Splunk, which management is expecting to close by April 30.

The company also announced that its revenue dropped 6 per cent (year-over-year) in its fiscal second quarter and its earnings-per-share dipped 3 per cent over the same period.

In September last year, Cisco laid off 350 employees in the Silicon Valley in the US in its latest job cut round.

Cisco Set to Cut Thousands of Jobs

Cisco did not comment on the potential job cuts….reports Asian Lite News

Global networking giant Cisco is reportedly geared up to lay off “thousands” of employees next week, as the company pivots to focus on “high-growth areas”.

Cisco is expected to report its Q2 2024 earnings on February 14 and the layoff announcement is likely to be made during the earnings, reports Reuters.

Cisco did not comment on the potential job cuts.

Cisco last year issued layoff notices to nearly 4,000 employees, as the company rolled out efforts to “rebalance” and cut costs.

The networking company had a total employee count of 84,900 as of its fiscal 2023, according to reports.

In September last year, Cisco laid off 350 employees in the Silicon Valley in the US in its latest job cut round.

The company in November 2022 announced to slash about 5 per cent of its workforce, around 4,000 jobs.

The company had said in a statement that these “recent notifications are part of the rebalancing effort we began in November 2022, which included a limited restructuring impacting our real estate portfolio and approximately 5 per cent of our workforce”.

The layoffs in November were part of a $600 million restructuring plan.

“This rebalancing is about prioritising investments in our transformation, to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations in the changing technology landscape,” the company had said.

For its full fiscal 2023 year, Cisco generated sales of $57 billion.

Cisco begins fresh layoffs

Dozens of former and current Cisco employees flooded social media with claims of internal layoffs announced this week…reports Asian Lite News

Global networking giant Cisco has begun a round of layoffs affecting employees across business units, which are part of an earlier “rebalancing effort”.

According to verified Cisco employees on anonymous professional community forum Blind, some business units allegedly affected are Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), Cisco Collaboration, Cisco Data Center Services & Solutions, Cisco Experience Centers (CxC), Cisco Security Business Group (SBG) Cisco Servers and Webex.

It was, however, unclear the number of jobs cut at Cisco. Dozens of former and current Cisco employees flooded social media with claims of internal layoffs announced this week.

“Got to know that my name is in the layoff list through a known Senior Manager who was in a meeting with my Director and frankly speaking, it’s such a toxic and controlling environment and I personally don’t want to work in that team. Little stressed as the job market is very dull,” a sacked employee wrote.

Another user said software engineers are being impacted at the company.

According to a comment, “many US-based directors are gone. DC is a growth market (ask Arista) yet Cisco is cutting knowledge loose”, another commented: “No, I think Collab China engineering is impacted the most this time (over 400 people).”

The company said in a statement to Fierce Telecom that these “recent notifications are part of the rebalancing effort we began in November 2022, which included a limited restructuring impacting our real estate portfolio and approximately 5 per cent of our workforce”.

Cisco’s last major round of layoffs impacted more than 4,000 employees in late 2022.

The layoffs in November were part of a $600 million restructuring plan.

The company said in a statement that “this rebalancing is about prioritising investments in our transformation, to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations in the changing technology landscape”.

6G dominates PM Modi-Cisco COO talks

Cisco Chief Operating Officer (COO) Maria Martinez said that PM Modi asked them to engage on 6G as after 5G, the prime minister is already laying out the blueprint for it…reports Nishant Arora

As 5G roll-out picks up pace in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is already laying out the blueprint for 6G and has asked global networking giant Cisco to begin research and development (R&D) around the next-gen telecommunication technology to further empower millions, according to the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Maria Martinez.

In an interaction with IANS, Martinez revealed the conversation she, along with other top Cisco leadership, had with PM Modi last week around the emerging technologies and how they can help the country innovate and build for the world.

“It was very exciting to meet the prime minister and other top leaders to witness the great commitment they have to make India a global manufacturing and export hub for various technologies. 5G is a great opportunity for us to do more, not only for the private sector but also for enterprises of all sizes at massive scale,” Martinez said.

She said that PM Modi asked them to engage on 6G as after 5G, the prime minister is already laying out the blueprint for it.

“We talked about building some kind of joint R&D around 6G as well. We are very excited after seeing the 5G roll-out globally, including in India. We’re very excited about 6G too,” Martinez told IANS.

PM Modi has already emphasised that the 6G initiative will create new opportunities for innovators, industries and startups. In March, he released a vision document that details India’s plans to develop and launch 6G telecom services in a few years.

Cisco is also working with telecom operators in India for the monetisation of private 5G use cases as a service model.

The company is witnessing the 5G rollout at a very rapid pace with both service providers Reliance Jio Infocomm and Bharti Airtel connecting cities and towns, as the country aims to connect every nook and corner of the country with 5G access this year.

Cisco’s Chair and CEO Chuck Robbins also discussed with PM Modi how the company has doubled down on manufacturing to boost exports from the country.

The global networking giant has announced it will start manufacturing in India, with an aim to drive more than $1 billion in combined domestic production and exports in the coming years via offering a robust and secure device ecosystem.

Dave West, President, Cisco Asia Pacific, Japan, and Greater China (APJC), told IANS that India is moving very rapidly on 5G rollout and the energy around the whole piece of digitisation in the country is super impressive.

“We’re incredibly excited about the Indian market and are well aligned to see India on the digitisation and the growth journey. The manufacturing announcement is a testament to our belief in this growth market. We are going to be manufacturing routers and switches to begin with, and then move from there,” West elaborated.

Enterprises of all sizes are digitising very rapidly in the country and as they digitise, technology comes at the forefront of their strategy.

“It is fundamental to their success, not only internally on how they manage their own businesses and provide capabilities to their employees but also how they do business with others. Also, cybersecurity and sustainability are two key topics of discussions as enterprises want us to make resilient, high quality, agile infrastructure,” West told IANS.

India is a key market for Cisco and its second largest R&D centre outside the US.

Cisco outlines 7 technology trends for 2023

“Whilst we realize that achieving sustainability is complex and multifaceted, what’s certain is that technology continues to play a pivotal role in driving ESG agendas for governments and enterprises,” says Reem Asaad, Vice President, Cisco Middle East and Africa.

In 2023, the economic climate will continue to be shaped by reducing costs and increasing efficiency. Many companies are therefore looking to the future for innovative technologies that can help here. Today, Cisco outlines the seven technology trends for 2023 in the areas of security, increasing network efficiency, sustainability, and AI.

Reem Asaad, Vice President, Cisco Middle East and Africa said that the dominant theme throughout these trends is the pace of technological evolution that is continuing to accelerate.

“These technology trends are on the rise in our region and are shaping the future of every business across all industries, driven by ambitious national visions that are putting technology at the heart of governments’ initiatives in the Middle East and Africa. Today we are at the intersection of a vast potential such technologies hold, and the challenges that should be mitigated through robust security measures,” she added.

“One of the key highlights we’re witnessing today more than ever is that businesses need to consider the social context of their actions. Increasingly, we see a focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) in the region. Whilst we realize that achieving sustainability is complex and multifaceted, what’s certain is that technology continues to play a pivotal role in driving ESG agendas for governments and enterprises,” she added.

Sustainability and AI

 Sustainability

Net Zero will drive common standards to meet sustainability goals with advancements in Power Over Ethernet (PoE) design and hardware to transform data centers for a more sustainable future. Networking and APIs will become more advanced within data center platform management to monitor, track, and change the use of energy. IT vendors and equipment partners will be more transparent in their reuse of hardware (circularity) to move the needle with the sustainability processes.

 Responsible AI

In 2023, we will see multiple, highly publicized instances of artificial intelligence used by some individuals and organizations to achieve unethical and socially destructive objectives. Industry, governments, academia, and NGOs will come together to begin hammering out a framework for governing AI in an ethical and responsible manner to mitigate potential harm. This framework will be based on principles such as Transparency, Fairness, Accountability, Privacy, Security, and Reliability and will ultimately be applied to model creation and the selection of training data as defining principles of AI systems.

IT Security Trends

Quantum Cryptography

Transmitting keys is a fundamental risk to security, as they can be harvested and decrypted later. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is poised to be particularly impactful because it avoids any distribution of the keys over an insecure channel. In 2023, in preparation for a post-quantum world, we will see a macrotrend emerge with adoption of QKD in datacenters, IoT, autonomous systems, and 6G.

 Application and API Security

As modern cloud-native applications are becoming drivers of business, protecting the underlying application environment is critical. In 2023, developers will get more and more support from various development tools that speed up development cycles and allow them to manage and secure distributed application architectures with an emphasis on delivering exceptional, secure digital experiences. We will also see continued movement toward tools that allow security experts to collaborate seamlessly on these outcomes.

Business Efficiency and Resilience

  Optimizing Multi-cloud Architectures

As deglobalization and issues around data sovereignty accelerate, in the year ahead we will see a noticeable shift in how companies leverage multi-cloud architectures. While 89% of enterprises are adopting a multi-cloud strategy for a variety of reasons (geopolitical, technical, provider diversification), the benefits come additional complexity in connecting, securing, and observing a multi-cloud environment. We will see a big move toward new multi-cloud frameworks such as Sovereign Clouds, Local Zone Clouds, Zero-Carbon Clouds, and other novel cloud offerings. This will create a path toward more private and edge cloud applications and services ushering in a new multi-cloud operating model.

Full-Stack Observability tied to Business Outcomes

The problem with monitoring has always been too much data with too little context and business correlation. The evolution of application monitoring toward full stack observability will increasingly provide a view relative to business context. When applied systematically, this will drastically speed up response and optimize business operations in real time. In 2023, business context will become widely recognized as an integral part of monitoring and visibility outcomes.

Internet of Things (IoT) makes supply chains more resilient

Enterprises and logistics providers will increasingly utilize IoT to bring full visibility into their supply chains in 2023. IoT and other technologies will not only play a larger role in bringing resiliency and efficiency into supply chains but will also improve cybersecurity and IT/OT network management. As a result, enterprises and logistics providers will reconfigure supply chains around predictive and prescriptive models including smart contracts and distributed ledgers. This is a major transition toward more sustainable business practices and circular supply chains.
