‘Cong-Left will oppose each other in Kerala’

With the CPI declaring Annie Raja its candidate from Kerala’s Wayanad, the Congress Wednesday said it is in alliance with the Left in different states but they have always and will continue to oppose each other electorally in Kerala.

The Congress’s assertion came after Annie Raja, wife of CPI general secretary D Raja, was nominated to contest from the pivotal Wayanad constituency, a seat presently held by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Asked about Annie Raja’s candidature, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh told reporters, “The Left parties are very much part of the INDIA group. It has always been understood that this does not preclude group partners from contesting against each other in different states especially Kerala.”

“The Congress and the Left are allies in different states but in Kerala we have always and will continue to oppose each other electorally,” he asserted. Asked whether Rahul Gandhi would contest against her in Wayanad, Annie Raja had said the decision of each party is their prerogative and she cannot comment on anything based on speculation. The Congress party is yet to announce their candidate in the constituency.

On Monday, CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat said that the incumbent MP from Waynad Rahul Gandhi and the Congress should think about the Waynad seat.

“CPI has declared its candidate for the seat in Wayanad, Comrade Annie Raja, who has played a key role in ‘Mahila Andholan’. Now she will be the candidate from the side of the whole LDF. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress need to think, they say that their fight is against BJP. In Kerala, if you come and fight against Left, what message are you giving? So they need to think about their seat once again,” said CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat.

Earlier, Annie Raja said that in Kerala, the fight is between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), adding that the situation is the same and nothing has changed.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday announced candidates for four Kerala Lok Sabha seats, nominating senior party leader Annie Raja to contest from the Wayanad constituency, a seat presently held by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“For such a long time, CPI – under the LDF alliance – is contesting on the four seats…This time also, the party has announced its candidates for all these four constituencies. In Kerala, the fight is between LDF and UDF. So, there is nothing new in that…The situation is the same, nothing has changed,” Raja said.

“Earlier in 2019, the CPI contested against Rahul Gandhi. We have been contesting elections from there for a very long time,” she added.

DMK, CPI Seat-Sharing to be Finalised Early Next Week

The DMK will finalise its seat-sharing arrangement with its alliance partner CPI on March 3.

The CPI had contested and won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Tiruppur and Nagapattinam seats in alliance with the DMK. Both were part of the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in 2019 and now it is the I.N.D.I.A block in 2024.

The CPI Lok Sabha party leader and Member of Parliament from Tiruppur, K. Subbarayan told IANS on Tuesday that the party will finalise its seat-sharing with the DMK leadership on March 3.

He, however, refused to elaborate on whether the CPI will be getting the same seats that it had contested and won in 2019 or whether there is a change in constituencies.

The DMK has refused to allocate the sitting Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat to the CPI(M) and the seat-sharing discussions between the two parties have hit a roadblock due to this.

The DMK-led front had won 38 out of the 39 Lok Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu in 2019, and DMK President and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K. Stalin had directed the party cadres, district and state leaders to work hard for a total sweep in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

AIADMK undecided on alliances

The AIADMK leadership is uncertain on the political alliance it has to forge for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

After cutting ties with the BJP-led NDA in Tamil Nadu following differences of opinion with the state BJP President, K.Annamalai, the AIADMK is in political uncertainty on new combinations and permutations.

While the party leadership has travelled across Tamil Nadu and met people before its manifesto was finalised, the party is unable to stich in a credible alternative to DMK.

The AIADMK, which is the principal opposition party of Tamil Nadu, had more than 33% vote share in the 2021 assembly polls and is planning to win a few seats from the state in the Lok Sabha elections.

Party general secretary and Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu assembly, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), had recently met a senior leader of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and also Vijayakanth’s party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).

However, sources in AIADMK told IANS that the meeting with these political parties were not as expected and EPS said that more discussions will be conducted as expected.

It may be recalled that in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, AIADMK in alliance with NDA could garner only one seat — Theni which AIADMK leader P. Ravindhranath won defeating senior Congress leader and former Union Minister, EVKS Elangovan.

After breaking up the alliance with the BJP, the AIADMK is expecting secular votes in its kitty and is tryingn to align itself with the PMK at any cost as it is the political arm of the powerful Vanniyar community which can have a a major say in the Western region of Tamil Nadu.

Sources in AIADMK told IANS that hectic bargaining was taking place behind the scenes and major decisions will be taken soon.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday announced candidates for four Kerala Lok Sabha seats, nominating senior party leader Annie Raja to contest from the Wayanad constituency, a seat presently held by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Notably, Pannian Raveendran has been nominated from Thiruvananthapuram, VS Sunil Kumar from Thrissur, and Arun Kumar from Mavelikara.

Congress’ Rahul Gandhi is currently the MP from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) is part of the INDIA bloc, which came into existence to take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is led by PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and prevent it from winning a third straight term at the Centre in the Lok Sabha elections.

CPI General Secretary D Raja is also one of the member of Coordination Committee and Election Strategy Committee.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Binoy Viswam said that this is a political battle.

“This is a political battle. Personally, I regard Rahul Gandhi as a very good friend, a person with commitment, as a young committed leader of the Congress party, committed to Gandhian and Nehruvian policies, but the point is that while fielding Rahul Gandhi as the candidate from Wayanad, Congress has to answer three political questions,” he added.

He further asked in this crucial battle of elections, who is the “main enemy of the Congress party, the RSS-led BJP or Left?”

“In the INDIA bloc, it is very clear that the main political enemy is the RSS-led BJP. Is the Congress clear about this?” he asked.

He further said that, as far as our party and LDF are concerned, our party doesn’t care who is the opponent.

“We will fight for the cause of secular India. We will fight for the Constitution and Gandhian Nehruvian values. We believe that Rahul Gandhi has the right to contest from any seat,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kerala has a total of 20 Lok Sabha seats.(ANI)

Canada’s annual CPI hit 40-year high in 2022

Prices for fuel oil and other fuels rose 59.6 per cent on an annual average basis, following a 24.4 per cent gain in 2021…reports Asian Lite News

Canada’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 6.8 per cent on an annual average basis in 2022, hitting a 40-year high, the national statistical agency said. Statistics Canada said the price increases were broad-based in 2022 and higher energy prices contributed the most to headline inflation.

Excluding energy, the annual average CPI rose 5.7 per cent in 2022.

Year-over-year price growth accelerated each month in the first half of the year, reaching a high of 8.1 per cent in June, and slowed in the second half of the year.

The CPI rose 6.3 per cent year on year in December, following a 6.8 per cent increase in November, Statistics Canada said.

According to Statistics Canada, consumers paid 28.5 per cent more for gasoline on an annual average basis.

Crude oil prices rose as a result of global supply uncertainty and higher demand in response to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, pushing prices at the pump higher.

Prices for fuel oil and other fuels rose 59.6 per cent on an annual average basis, following a 24.4 per cent gain in 2021.

Prices for food purchased from stores rose 9.8 per cent in 2022, the fastest pace since 1981, after increasing 2.2 per cent in 2021.

In the coming months, the relatively large month-over-month price movements that were observed from January 2022 to June 2022 will stop influencing the 12-month price movements in 2023.

The broad increase in prices, led by prices for energy products, in the first half of 2022 will have a downward impact on the year-over-year rate of consumer inflation through the first half of 2023 because higher prices from 2022 will be used as the basis for year-over-year comparisons, Statistics Canada said.

Yechury reelected CPI-M general secy

Sitaram Yechury has been re-elected as the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday in the 23rd Party Congress held in the Kannur district of Kerala.

He was chosen to lead the party by an 85-member new Central Committee that was elected at the Party Congress.

He was first elected to the post on April 9, 2015 in the 21st Party Congress held in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. In the 22nd Party Congress held in Hyderabad in 2018, Yechury bagged the second term for the highest post in the left party.

He succeeded Prakash Karat who had held the top post in the party for three consecutive terms from 2005 to 2015.

Yechury’s responsibility is to revive the party, at present CPI (M) has only been restricted to three states i.e. Kerala, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu.

During the ongoing event (Congress) he had declared party is giving priority to regional alliances with an aim to weaken Bharatiya Janata Party.

“CPI(M) was ready for electoral alliances with secular parties. He said the party was giving priority to regional alliances with the aim of weakening the BJP in all states,” Yechury.

The 85-member new Central Committee is consisted of 15 women and 17 new cadres, while the 17-member Politburo has three new entrants.

The 17 elected members of the politburo are Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat, Pinarayi Vijayan, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Brinda Karat, Manik Sarkar, Md Salim, Surjya Kanta Mishra, BV Raghavulu, Tapan Sen, Nilotpal Basu, M A Baby, G Ramakrishnan, Subhashini Ali, Ramchandra Dome, Dr Ashok Dhawale and A Vijayaraghavan.

CPI MP gives notice on EPFO interest rate in RS

CPI lawmaker Binoy Viswam on Monday gave a suspension of business notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha to discuss the decision of slashing EPFO interest rate to 8.1 per cent from 8.5 per cent, the lowest in the last 43 years.

On Saturday, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) decided to lower the interest on provident fund deposits for 2021-22 and provide an 8.1 per cent rate of interest. This slashing of rate of interest is the lowest since 1977-78 when the EPF interest rate was recorded at 8 per cent.

AAP Member Sanjay Singh has also given Zero Hour notice regarding not to change the original building of Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati ashram.

The second part of the Budget session resumed after a 30-day recess this morning and will conclude on April 8.

During this period, the House is likely to get over 64 hours to transact the legislative business besides taking up the issues of public importance during this part of the session.

CPI inflation jumps to 6.01% in Jan 2022

Higher food prices, as well as rising commodity costs, lifted India’s January 2022 retail inflation on a sequential as well as year-on-year basis, official data showed on Monday.

As per the data furnished by the National Statistical Office, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 6.01 per cent last month from 5.66 per cent in December 2021.

Similarly, on a YoY basis, the rise in last month’s retail inflation was faster than the 4.06 per cent increase in prices recorded for January 2021.

The trend assumes significance as retail inflation rate crossed the target range of the Reserve Bank of India.

The central bank has a CPI target range of 2-to-6 per cent. As per the NSO data, the rate of rise in the Consumer Food Price Index, which measure the changes in retail prices of food products, increased to 5.43 per cent last month from 4.05 per cent in December 2021.
