‘Taliban’s treatment of women is crime against humanity’

The Taliban swept back into power two years ago this month, as western forces and diplomats hastily withdrew…reports Asian Lite News

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has called on the International Criminal Court to prosecute the Taliban for crimes against humanity over the “systematic brutalisation of women and girls” in Afghanistan

Brown also urged the UK government and its allies to impose sanctions on regime officials responsible for the near-total exclusion of women and girls from education and the workplace.

The Taliban swept back into power two years ago this month, as western forces and diplomats hastily withdrew.

Their initial promises of a more moderate rule than that between 1996 and 2001, during which they were unrecognised by most of the outside world, has proved hollow.

The triumph of hardliners within the Taliban movement meant girls were excluded first from secondary school then from all education. Women were barred from working for aid organisations, prompting most to suspend operations there.

The Taliban had already insisted on segregated aid distributions, so without female workers Afghan women could no longer be helped. Last month there was a rare protest by Afghan women in Kabul after the Taliban decreed that beauty salons, one of the last public spaces open to women, be closed as “un-Islamic”.

Brown, the United Nations’ special envoy for global education, said the evidence of crimes against humanity being committed by the Taliban since their return to power was “overwhelming”.

“They’ve been excluded from education, excluded from employment, excluded from visiting public places,” he told the BBC. “It’s probably the most heinous, the most vicious, the most comprehensive abuse of human rights that’s taking place around the world today. And it is systematically being inflicted on millions of girls and women across Afghanistan. And that’s why the United Nations and others are calling it gender discrimination. Some call it gender apartheid. That’s why it’s seen as a crime against humanity — and it’s right, then, for the international criminal court, which has responsibility for dealing with crimes against humanity, to both investigate and to prosecute those people who have been responsible for this crime.”

Taliban fire shots, beat women protesters in Kabul.

Brown voiced support for sanctions against the Taliban as an entity, which have not been imposed since the takeover. “What we need is a prosecution,” he said. “But we also need sanctions. I’m urging the UK government to sanction the individuals responsible for this policy. The European Union has done it, but America and others can do it.”

Only financial sanctions relating to some Taliban leaders have remained in force since 1999. A 2021 resolution by the UN security council allowed for the provision of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan without breaking international law on sanctions.

Brown said he was shocked that there is “so little international pressure on the regime”, suggesting that the pressure of a potential prosecution could force the Taliban to rethink its approach. He also urged leaders and clerics from Muslim-majority countries to help persuade the Taliban that “Islam is a religion that values women and girls” and denounce the misuse of Islam as a means to deny them rights.

He said two of them were video recording the attack on their phones while four-five men were hitting him, adding that the goons were repeatedly raising the “Khalistan Zindabad” slogan the whole time.

“Everything happened within five minutes and they left saying this should be enough lesson for me for opposing the Khalistan issue, if not they are ready to give me more lessons like this,” the student said.

‘Kerala Crime Files’: Trailer hints at a high octane drama

Citing Paatal Lok and Delhi Crime as the main inspiration for coming up with this dark thriller, Ashiq Aimar is sure to stir up an exciting watching experience never ever seen on the Malayalam screen…reports Asian Lite News

Come June 23 2023 and the long wait for Kerala’s first thriller web series would be answered with the release of ‘Kerala Crime Files’ streaming on Disney+Hotstar.

Written by Ashiq Aimar and directed by Ahammed Khabeer, the trailer of the web series has been the talk of town and the buzz of excitement in the air has been on the surge.

With the modern Malayali audience who are well acquainted with binge watching web series and movies on platforms like Disney+Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime, the announcement of this project comes with high expectations.

In an interview with the New Indian express, Ashiq Aimar narrates the pressure to deliver a quality screen experience with an equally important script that would keep the audience hooked to their seats and be mind-blowing simultaneously.

When asked about the choice of casting for the project, he says that it was a deliberate attempt to drop the big names in order to ‘avoid the predictability factor’. “Normally, when a big star is playing the investigator, people immediately assume they’ll easily catch the killer. But when you cast someone who doesn’t have the burden of a superstar persona, you get to make them look like ordinary human beings”, The New Indian Express quoted Ashiq Aimar as saying.

“When you cast someone who doesn’t have the burden of a superstar persona, you get to make them look like ordinary human beings”– Ashiq Aimar

This was a prerequisite for roles of the police officers who would appear as ordinary human beings who were bound to err in their line of duty, without which they would not do justice to the expertly crafted characters. By choosing many people’s favourites, the casting is crucial as their performance would add layers to complexity of the series.

Speaking of the format of episodic narration, he finds it quite liberating, for the space of an episode could crafted with more detailing, leading to a sound building up of the escalating suspense and intensity of unpredictable twists.

With 6 episodes running 30 minutes each, the story follows the investigation carried out by Aju Varghese and Lal in the lead roles following the murder of a prostitute along with probing into ‘the lives of the cops, their struggles, and problems in the police system and bureaucracy’.

Citing Paatal Lok and Delhi Crime as the main inspiration for coming up with this dark thriller, he is sure to stir up an exciting watching experience never ever seen on the Malayalam screen.

The trailer of this venture oozes with a gripping, dark, gore plot and promises the audience nothing short of a classic, masterpiece in the genre of a crime investigation thriller.

Biden sides with GOP on new D.C. crime laws

For the first time in 30 years, the President’s signature would allow Congress to overturn a D.C. decision…reports T.N. Ashok

US President Joe Biden said he will sign off on a Republican-backed resolution that seeks to override Washington’s District of Columbia’s new controversial crime laws on sentencing.

Initially, the Biden administration had some reservations on the Republican resolution on grounds of Congressional intervention in the laws.

The District of Columbia has sought to rewrite the crime laws on the period of sentencing for crimes.

For the first time in 30 years, the President’s signature would allow Congress to overturn a D.C. decision.

“I support D.C. statehood and home-rule,” Biden said in a statement.

“But I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the mayor’s objections — such as lowering penalties for carjacking. If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did I’ll sign it,” the USA today quoted the President as saying.

What actually led to the D.C. rewriting the laws for reducing sentences for specific offences?

Late last year, the D.C. City Council approved a new local criminal code that includes the elimination of mandatory minimum sentences for many crimes and the reduction of maximum sentences for crimes such as robbery and burglary, media reports said.

The Council overrode a veto from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has expressed serious concerns over reduction of sentences for crimes.

The local ordinance’s passage has been in the works for almost two decades to redo D.C.’s crime laws. Republicans were quick to oppose it.

In recent years, they have been very critical of Democrats going soft on crime. Washington reportedly had its highest number of murders in 2022 in nearly 20 years, the reports said.

Some 31 Democrats crossed the floor joining republicans to vote against the new legislation which is expected to secure bipartisan support in the Senate that could happen as early as next week.

Under the US Constitution, Congress is vested with powers to overturn local D.C. legislation.

Biden’s rejection of the new law and some Democrats’ decision to override it is an about turn on the White House Office of Management statement on February 6 this year, that “Congress should respect the District of Columbia’s autonomy to govern its own local affairs”.

It was indeed a major political dilemma for President Biden to oppose his own partymen.

He was faced with a political question on whether to let the resolution become law or veto it and face criticism that he was going soft on crime during the 2024 presidential election. Obviously, it was a shrewd political decision to go against the latter option.

Biden, had been distancing himself from the “defund the police” campaign of the left.

If he had penned the D.C. legislation, he would have been the but end of Republican propaganda in an election year of 2024.

The question is whether Biden’s decision will please many activists who have been trying to influence him to introduce police and justice reforms in the country.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre did some tight rope walking with reporters on the issue when she said Biden believes every city “has the right to self-government” but also wants to keep communities safe.

“This is different,” Jean-Pierre said. “The D.C. Council put changes forward over the mayor’s objections, and the president doesn’t support changes like lowering penalties for carjacking.”

The Republican sponsor Senatir Bill Hagerty from Tennessee was quite happy with Biden’s decision.

“I hope these reports are true and that President Biden is no longer threatening to veto my common sense resolution to block the soft-on-crime DC Crime Bill. Reducing violent crime should not be controversial.”

Protests erupt in US after Tyre Nichols beating footage

Horrifying video footage was released of US police beating African-American Tyre Nichols in Memphis earlier this month, leading to injuries from which he later died.

Protests erupted across the US after the release of a footage which showed five former police officers in Memphis brutally beating an African-American man who died three days later after the gruesome incident.

The police officers, who are all Black and charged with murder, are seen taking turns to kick and punch the 29-year-old victim Tyre Nichols on January 7 as he screamed for his mother during the incident at a traffic stop, the BBC reported.

On Friday, the Memphis Police Department released four graphic videos, totalling more than an hour of footage.

The first video shows officers pulling Nichols out of his vehicle and shouting at him to get on the ground.

“I didn’t do anything!” he says. Officers demand that he lie down flat.

Within seconds, one of the officers fires a Taser at the victim, who leaps up and manages to run away.

A separate video, from a CCTV camera mounted on a utility pole, shows officers beating Nichols after catching up with him in a residential area.

Two officers are seen holding him down while others take turns kicking and punching him and striking him with an expandable baton.

They drag him across the ground and prop him sitting up against a squad car.

The third and fourth videos show police body camera footage of the beating, with Nichols being held down, pepper-sprayed and assaulted as he repeatedly shouts: “Mom!”

The five officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr, Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith — were fired last week and were taken into custody on Thursday, the BBC reported.

Each faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

Four of the five posted bail and were released from custody by Friday morning, according to jail records.

Shortly after the footage was released, protests erupted in New York and Memphis.

Rallies and demonstrations were also planned to be held in Washington, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta and Portland.

President Joe Biden, who has called for demonstrations to remain peaceful, said in a statement: “Like so many, I was outraged and deeply pained to see the horrific video of the beating that resulted in Tyre Nichols’ death.”

Texas woman held for hate crime against Indians

Police said the woman, Esmeralda Upton, was arrested on one charge of “assault bodily injury” and one charge of “terroristic threats.” She was held on a total bond amount of $10,000…reports Asian Lite News

Police in Texas arrested a woman who they said shouted racial abuse at four Indian women in a viral video, telling them to “Go back to India,” in an incident brought to the attention of federal authorities.

“This incident is a hate crime in accordance with Texas laws,” police in Plano, Texas, where the incident occurred, said in a statement on Saturday.

“This incident may also be a hate crime based on federal law, and we are working closely with the FBI and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division on this case.”

In a video of the incident, which was shared on social media and got millions of views, the woman was seen shouting racist comments in a parking lot at a group of four women of Indian origin.

“Go back to India, we don’t want you here,” she said in the video. “I hate you f***ing Indians,” the woman, who identified herself as Mexican-American in the video, added.

The arrest of the woman took place on Thursday. The video of the incident from Wednesday went viral on social media, particularly in India and the United States.

Police said the woman, Esmeralda Upton, was arrested on one charge of “assault bodily injury” and one charge of “terroristic threats.” She was held on a total bond amount of $10,000.

One of the Indian women, Rani Banerjee, said she and three of her friends had just finished dinner at a restaurant when the woman confronted them in the parking lot.

“Suddenly, we heard this woman yelling at us and started coming toward us. We were shocked by the racial slurs that she used and combative attitude,” Banerjee told an ABC News affiliate. Banerjee started recording the incident with her phone.

The video also appears to show Upton hitting the women.

“What was so very scary is she came very close and not only verbally assaulted us but started physically assaulting us. She started hitting me,” Banerjee said.

A representative of Upton could not immediately be reached for comment.

Escaped prisoner calls local paper to say jail was a crazy place

Grey did not reveal his current location, however, he said that he would return in time for a parole hearing on June 14…reports Asian Lite News

A man who escaped from a UK jail earlier this month rang up his local newspaper to say that the prison was driving him “insane”.

According to BBC, Greggor Grey absconded from HM Prison Sudbury, in Derbyshire, on May 15, with police subsequently launching a hunt for the escapee. The cops had informed that Grey had links to the Leicester and Birmingham areas and described him as black, 5 feet 11 inches and of stocky build. The officials warned the public not to approach the fugitive.

Since then, Grey has got in touch with his local newspaper to tell them why he escapade before promising to return. The 42-year-old called up BirminghamLive and revealed his struggle to an unsuspecting reporter. He told the media outlet that he has been in prison for the last 17 years. “It is driving me insane,” he stated.

“I thought about just giving them the raw, uncut emotion that I deal with on a daily basis,” the 42-year-old fugitive told the media outlet on an emotional phone call.

Grey did not reveal his current location, however, he said that he would return in time for a parole hearing on June 14.

It is understood that Mr Grey has served 17 years for armed robbery, even though his initial sentence was just a minimum of three years. But BirminghamLive reported that Grey remains, or is meant, behind bars due to an Imprisonment for Public Protection Sentence (IPPs). This controversial sentencing means that prisoners must serve a minimum term before they can apply to the Parole Board for release.

IPPs were scrapped in 2012 after intense backlash. However, the ban wasn’t retrospective and does not affect those already subject to an IPP before 2012, meaning those jailed on IPP sentences prior to 2012 are still subject to their terms and still have to apply to the parole board after serving their minimum term.

Teva Pharma found liable in Opioid crisis

The drug maker argued at trial that it complied with federal and state regulations and denied engaging in deceptive marketing….reports Asian Lite News

A New York jury has found that drug maker Teva Pharmaceuticals and its affiliates helped fuel an opioid epidemic in the US state, the BBC reported.

A lawsuit filed by the state’s attorney general in 2019 accused Teva and other firms of aggressively marketing painkillers across the state, while doing nothing to minimise addiction.

Damages the company will have to pay will be determined later. Teva said on Thursday it will appeal the verdict, the report said.

The drug maker argued at trial that it complied with federal and state regulations and denied engaging in deceptive marketing.

pharma industry

In a statement, New York State Attorney General Laetitia James said that the jury found the firm and its affiliates liable for “death and destruction” across the US.

“Teva Pharmaceuticals USA and others misled the American people about the true dangers of opioids,” she said, the report added.

The 2019 lawsuit targeted six drug makers, members of the Sackler family – which founded Purdue Pharma – and opioid distributors. Many reached settlements with the state.

Supporters of the lawsuit hope that the damages that Teva will have to pay will be used to improve treatment and support services for those affected by opioid addiction.
